WATERSHED DELINEATION

The goals of this project were to assess water basins leading to the Dzaleka refugee camp in Lilongwe, Malawi. A digital elevation model was used to assess the watershed delineation on various rivers. Once this was analysed, basins in the study area was located.

A detailed 3D illustration of the study area, with its stream segments and basins are displayed in figure 1.

Figure 2 shows the segments that were acquired from the DEM of Lilongwe. Once these segments were acquired, basins could be analysed by calculating where the stream segments starts, in conjuction with various QGIS tools

The results of this study are displayed in figure 3. It shows the stream segments and basins leading to the Dzaleka refugee camp.

It was found that all basins in the study area lead to the camp. This essentially causes flooding during the Lilongwe wet seasons.

LANDCOVER TRACING

LOCATION / USA -

COORDINATES / 47.802109, -123.604355

For this study, geographic coordinates of the owl nest locations were given and displayed in figures 4 and 5. Along with owl nest geographic coordinates, Figure 5 also displays these locations relative to vegetations cover types

The displayed data shows that owls are nesting within four vegetation cover types: Aspen, Northern Hardwood, Oak, and Upland mixed locations. Aspen vegetation cover has 11 nests, reporting for 23 percent. Northern Hardwood has 3 nests, which is 6 percent of the total nest cover. Oak has 23 nests, which holds 68 percent of the total nests, and Upland mixed vegetation cover has 1 nest, which is 2 percent.

The amount of forested area that is unavailable for timber harvesting due to presence of owl nests. As governmental stipulation for protecting nesting sites, a 10-ha buffer around nesting sites need to be computed. From the output land cover bufclip, the attributed forested areas area selected and are essentially areas that are unavailable for timber harvesting.

The following map displays the areas of Greenville with children aged 0-4 based on the U.S Census 2010, and childcare centre locations. This map is located in South Carolina, Greenville County which is in the north-western region of the state. Census data was used as values to compile this map in ArcGIS Online.

Most children ages 0-4 and childcare locations are near the central CBD area of Greenville.

CONSERVATION GIS SUITABILITY MAPPING

This assignment looked at suitability mapping as part of the Department of Nature conservation’s management objectives for the Kruger National Park located in the north eastern region of South Africa (figure 8).

The highly suitable distance to water supply(boreholes and rivers) are less than 500 meters and ecozone classes have weight values depending on the type of ecozone, with certain ecozones being more suitable than others.

RIVER & BOREHOLE LOCATION

Figure 9 A display the stream segments of the study area that was calculated from a digital elevation model. Figure 10 B are the locations of the boreholes found in the same study area. Areas located closer to water sources at a euclidean distance of 500 meters are more suitable than areas that are located further. Figures 10 and 11 show the euclidean distances from rivers and boreholes.

The weight classes of the ecozones are also two times more important than the water distances which means that the habitat locations should be more important than distances to water sources in the Kruger National Park.

Combining the river and borehole euclidean distances with the ecozone habitat class weights, a suitability map as created and displayed as figure 7.

From the suitability map of the Kruger National Park (figure 7) one could get a visual description of areas that are not suitable, less suitable, suitable, moderately suitable, and highly suitable. From this analysis, the total areas of each class was calculated.

FIRE

On April 18th of 2021, the Rhodes Memorial site fell victim to a wildfire, causing great damage to its infrastructure and surrounding biodiversity, and also destroying, not only the site’s well known restaurant, but “six educational buildings on the Rondebosch campus of the University of Cape Town, two heritage buildings, the Mostert’s Mill, UCT’s Jagger Reading Room and the Rhodes Memorial tea room.

FIRE DAMAGE ANALYSIS

LOCATION / SOUTH AFRICA - CAPE TOWN COORDINATES / -33.918861, 18.423300

Figure 13 and 14 display maps of the spread of fire from the Rhodes memorial, along the Table mountain National Park to the University of Cape Town’s upper campus where it destroyed the Special Collections Library. These are areas with high vegetation, hence experts posit that the fire with assistance by the debris generated wind spread through pine trees in the National Park. The burnt area, which is over 600 hectares, is featured on the classified map of figure 12. Sentinel 2 satellite imagery was used to extract information from the land and display it into maps.

CLASSIFYING GRASSLAND BIOMASS

This project was conducted in the Vulindlela District Municipality to help them understand the productivity of their rangeland/grasslands using geospatial techniques and remote sensing.

Landsat 8 OLI satellite data was downloaded and used to generate sampling points then was classified into 6 landuse classes namely, plantations, grasslands, woodlands, built-up, bare lands, and water. displayed in figure 18

The following map was an interpolation exercise looking at ozone levels in California using sample points captured throughout the city. Figure 20 looks at a map displaying the sample point locations and predicted ozone levels interpolated using the kriging method.

East of Los Angeles have displayed the highest levels of ozone levels, with the highest predicted levels of ozone and the highest probability of exceeding the critical average threshold of 0.12 ppm in at least one eight-hour period.

DIGITIZING M.U.S.T

LOCATION / MALAWI - LILONGWE

COORDINATES / -13.96692, 33.78725

The digitized map of the Malawian University of Science and Technology is represented in roads, walkways, gardens, and buildings. The map only displays basic digitizing of satellite imagery and creation of shapefiles to represent features based on real data. Georeferencing at a specific scale is important when creating most maps of focused areas that display the types and locations of features.

HONOURS DISSERTATION

THESIS RESEARCH

The following research was based on two comparative study areas in the City of Cape Town. Study area 1 included the Cape Flats and Northen Suburbs and study area 2 is inclusive of the Southen Suburbs.

The objectives of this study were to effectively explore the effects of land uses on the land surface temperature in the City of Cape Town. This study essentially looks at the effects the urban heat island and how it is mitigated in different areas of the city.

COORDINATES / -33.918861, 18.423300

Figure 26 display the City of Cape Town Municipality within its political borders. It also show where the two study areas in the city are located. Because of the abundace of integrated vegetation in built-up areas, study area 2 was hybpothesized to experience cooler surface temperatures than study area 1, which has rather little integrated greenspace.

Remotely sensed Landsat 9 data captured on 18 February 2022 was used to analyse LULC in two study areas and compare the differences between surface temperatures.

NDVI/NDBI CALCULATIONS

Vegetation indices such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) with R²=0.08 have shown a strong negative relationship with the surface temperatures increased, there was a reduction in healthy vegetation.

The Normalised Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) with R²=0.46 displayed a positive relationship with LST values, explaining that temperature values increased as built-up areas increased. The LST vs NDVI/NDBI values are displayed in figure 29.

LAND SURFACE TEMPERATURE ANAYLSIS

Areas with more urban greenspaces have shown to produce lower land surface temperature values compared to areas with less urban greenspace.

In the City of Cape Town it is common to find higher surface temperatures in areas such as the Cape Flats and Northern Suburbs in comparison to the Southern Suburbs, which experienced lower surface temperatures due to the differences in land use land cover.
