“I reaffirm the necessity to give tourism a priority in the future development programme. This sector has great potential for growth and for making an effective contribution to economic diversification, since our dear country possesses such splendid tourist assets such as its historic heritage, natural beauty, perfect environment, folklore and traditional industries. In addition, there is the security, stability and the spirit of tolerance of the Omani citizens, thanks to God. The tourism industry is well qualified to offer career opportunities to Omanis. It is well capable of serving the aims of regional development, since its benefits will cover all regions. On this basis we should prepare a newstrategy to develop this sector so it can stand on its own feet in a severely competitive, flexible and diversified international market.” Excerpted from the speech of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said on the occasion of the 29th National Day

Dear Reader, Welcome to the 2019 annual issue of DestinationOman print edition, which marks the publication’s fourteenth anniversary too. We have come a long way since we released the first issue of this printed version in 2004. Thank you all for making it possible.

In this issue, we are privileged to have an exclusive interview with Her Excellency Maitha bint Saif Al Mahrouqi, Undersecretary at the Oman Ministry of Tourism, who has been proactively involved promoting and developing the immense potential of Oman tourism. She has stressed on the need for developing qualified local human resources while expanding the visibility of the Sultanate on the world tourism scene, and simultaneously also developing the local infrastructure and facilities, with the involvement of a multitude of small and medium enterprises. We have covered most important places of tourist interest in Oman, like the stunning Musandam peninsula, a land of dramatic scenery that is peppered with many small islands and inlets, all teeming with bird and marine life. The ancient sea faring and dhow making wilayat of Sur is another interesting place with a lot of history that has been featured, along with Raz Al Jinz, the green turtle habitat, that is protected by law and is a testimony of Oman’s commitment to protect nature.

“We want to continue to promote Oman as a special destination”

Her Excellency Maitha bint Saif Al Mahrouqi the Undersecretary of the Sultanate of Oman’s Ministry of Tourism, since September 2011, is a graduate of Oxford Brookes University. An experienced travel and tourism executive and leader she is a Board Member of Oman Air, Al Mouj Muscat, and chairs Oman Sail. She is also the driving force behind many of the Ministry’s initiatives to boost the tourism sector’s performance. These include Oman’s highly successful “Beauty has an Address” global branding campaign, Muscat Arab Tourism Capital campaign, and development of several tactical campaigns with Oman Air and industry stakeholders. Prior to joining the Ministry, she was the Country Manager for Oman Air. DestinationOman conducted an interview with her.

H

ow in your opinion has the tourism sector evolved over the past few years in Oman? Tourism has multiple stakeholders: The Ministry of Tourism, the travel agents, tour operators, hotels, suppliers and service providers etc. The sector has progressed rapidly in the past few years, at all levels. At the Ministry, we have put together a full and comprehensive long-term strategy for the development of the industry as a whole. This is now our guiding foundation on which the multiplicity of tourism projects is based. Simultaneously, the National Program for Enhancing Economic Diversification (Tanfeedh) has identified tourism as one of the main sectors to be rapidly developed over the next period. As such, several tourism projects are being conducted under the Program. What have you prioritized on your agenda for the promotion of tourism in the Sultanate of Oman? There are many priorities. First and foremost, the sector can’t be developed without qualified human resources. Thus, specific efforts are being targeted at recruiting nationals for employment in the sector. A multitude of small and medium enterprises are also needed for the industry. Additionally, tour guides are an essential component of the tourism product and much efforts are being done on expanding and development this

important segment. Finally, expanding the visibility and exposure of the Sultanate on the world tourism scene accompanies the development of local tourism infrastructure and facilities. What do you feel is the need of the hour to improve the tourism experience in Oman? What is required is a coalition of tourism partners, including the public and private sector, to jointly define the way forward in the implementation of the Oman Tourism Strategy, with solid planning and several execution strategies, involving all parties, with clear role allocation and well defined KPIs. As the Undersecretary of Tourism, what ae the main challenges that you face when promoting tourism in the country? The world of Tourism is ever changing and evolving. More than one billion people travel yearly to tourism destinations around the world and competition is strong. We need to remain vigilant in promoting Oman as a distinct destination with a unique tourism product and characteristics. At the same time, the development of the local touristic infrastructure has to catch up with this expansion pace What is a common notion of the region amongst tourists that you would like to change? We want to continue to promote Oman as a special

destination, which features total safety and security, and also has a great landscape diversity, offering tourists a variety of authentic experiences, highlighted by uniquely friendly and hospitable Omanis. Every country has its own approach to tourism. How is Oman different from the other GCC countries? Oman as a country has been blessed with all what is needed to create a specific tourism destination for a great array of tourist preferences: leisure, adventure tourism, fauna and flora, culture and heritage, special interests, as well as business tourism. What are the prominent changes you hope to see by 2020? 2020 represents both the end of the ninth 5-year development plan for the country and the end of the first phase of the Tanfeedh program. By that date, we would be well on our way to have implemented a sizeable portion of the Oman Tourism Strategy as well as the specific Tanfeedh projects. Thus, new tourism clusters would have been developed across the countries, uniquely Omani experiences would have been created and we would be in full swing to fulfill the strategy mission: become a top-of-mind destination for discerning tourists

 2018-19 2017 - 18

How has the development of the tourism sector helped SMEs? Tourism is a sector which requires the development of hundreds and hundreds of small and medium enterprises. Whether at the level of the accommodation component, and also the upcoming development of clusters, SMEs in large numbers would be required to rapidly set up operations and fill the gap needed to service and supply tourism projects Is there a region in particular that has seen a rise in inflow of tourists apart of the capital city? All regions have seen an increase of tourism arrivals, whether tourists came from far, from the GCC or from within the Sultanate. More tourists have visited forts and castles, wadis and mountains, and experienced sports and adventure across Oman. It is worth noting the continuously increasing number of Omanis, GCC nationals and residents flocking into Salalah during the Khareef season. The current creation of tourism development masters plans for South Al Sharqiah, Ad Dakhiliyah and Musandam will also boost visitor numbers to those areas as well. Which is your favorite destination in Oman? It is indeed diďŹƒcult to define a favourite place when there is such a wide variety of interesting places to visit and experience.

Taimur Mosque 2018-19 2017 - 18

The Taimur one of the most breathtaking architectural landmarks in Oman and one of the most significant mosques built in Oman in recent times. This mosque was constructed through the private financing of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said in memory of his late father Sultan Said bin Taimur and it was first opened in the year 1999. It is located at Al Khuwair near the Radisson Blu Hotel and the Higher College of Technology. The mosque ivs built in the style of Ottoman mosques which are found in Turkey.

A major feature of the main prayer hall is the mehrab (prayer niche) which was built using eight different pieces of coloured marble to form intricate floral designs on it. This Mehrab is framed by a border of Quranic verses and a border of cermaic surround. The interior of the mosque is colorful, intricate and makes delicate use of natural lighting during daytime. The interior is unique among other modern Omani mosques in its usage of bright colors such as pink, turquoise, and cream in the symmetrical radial patterns in its ceiling and the inner columns. The main hall also features many small tinted glass windows, rows of chandeliers on the side columns of the main prayer hall, and a grand central chandelier. Unlike the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and other more recent Royal Mosques, Said bin Taimur Mosque is not open to non-Muslims. However, it is still possible for anyone to walk around the yard and garden outside the mosque to enjoy the view of the mosque. Visitors are expected to dress modestly even if they are not going to enter the actual mosque.

Covering an area of 4300 square metres the Taimur mosque is constructed on a raised podium keeping with the traditon of Omani mosques that were built elevated from ground level. The main prayer area can hold upto 1500 worshippers whereas the women’s area can accommdate 600 worshippers. In addition the courtyard can accommodate upto 2000 worshippers. There is also additional space avaialble making it possible tovv accommodate a total of 4500 worshippers in the mosque. The mosque’s distictive minaret lends its individual style and is 50 metres in height. The mosque consists of a main prayer hall, ladies prayer hall, meeting hall, library, clasrooom for books and covered passageways.

T

he ancient seafaring town of Sur and its port located

strategically at the easternmost point of vvArabian Peninsula with its boat (dhow) building centres and forts retains many of its old charms even now. Situated around 330 km from Muscat, Sur had been a point of attention of the world from ancient times. The harbour of Sur is one of the oldest in the world. It is said that Sun rises here first in the Arab world. For centuries Sur had been famous as a ship buildingespecially of trans-ocean vessels-and trading centre. Sur had trade relations with the African coast and Indian sub continent almost from sixth century. Due to the strategic location of Sur it is able to monitor the Indian Ocean and the Oman Sea from the place. Many of the ships which were constructed in Sur went to India, China, Iraq and various other countries. The old quarter of Sur is very fascinating and has several ancient Arabesque buildings with carved wooden doors. The winding roads add to its charms. Though its fortunes declined to a certain extent with the advent of modern ship building and establishment of new trade routes to the East

after the opening of Suez canal, presently it is on the path of revival. Dhow building The reputation of Sur as the major traditional boat (dhow) building town in Oman stands intact even now. The same wooden vessels that were in use two centuries before are being made here even now without much change. Its antiquity and craftsmanship still lures tourists. The skilled craftsmen of Sur are still unmatched in building dhows. Boat building is still an important industry in the town. A visit to the boatyards will be a wonderful experience to tourists as it would take them centuries back. You will see how the expert artisans work without modern technical drawings or tools and still manage to make some of the most wonderful seaworthy vessels. If you venture out of the town and go along the coast, you will find dhows along the coast. Sur was often described as the pearl of the east coast of the Sultanate. It was the main source for sailors for Oman’s navy, which played an illustrious role in maritime history. It formed the gateway of the east of Oman and was a historical meeting place for sea routes. Malik Bin Faham Al Azdi Al Umani adopted it as the capital of his kingdom in 2500

n the furthest reaches of the Sultanate, isolated

from the rest of Oman by the arm of the United Arab Emirate’s east coast, arises a land of dramatic beauty. Musandam took shape 1850 million years ago during the Cretaceous and Miocene ages. Here, awe-inspiring mountain faces overlook pristine blue expanses. These mountains, originally from the Zagros Mountain range, separated under earthquake and volconic violence to form the Hajar Mountain range. A starkly beautiful region of fjords, mountain-draped roads and bustling

unfathomable depth of the sea and the sky, totally dominated by nature. The Musandam peninsula in the extreme north of Oman offers some of the most breathtaking and spectacular scenery in the country. In the last glacial period, the sea level rose by almost one hundred meters and submerged a large number of wadis, thus creating a landscape of fjords, which earned Musandam the title, ‘Norway of the Gulf’.

“Oman is a Magical Destination” V

ictor Visser, Cluster General Manager, Atana Musandam & Atana Khasab is a South African national, who has been working in the hospitality sector for the past 26 years of which the last 10 years has been spent in the Middle East, including the last 3 years being based in Oman. In an exclusive interview with DestinationOman, he feels the next 5 years bring many opportunities and Oman is positioned to offer a unique experience to discerning travellers looking for something immersive and real. How, in your opinion, has the hotel industry evolved over the past few years in Oman? Oman is a magical destination full of rich history, natural Omani hospitality and culture that is being showcased to the world. The hospitality industry has grown significantly over the past few years and new hospitality projects are being developed at a good pace. The hotel industry has developed from providing accommodation and services to clients to offering experiences and cultural engagement to the ever growing number of travelers looking for unique memories. What changes have you initiated since the time you assumed your role as the General Manager? After fully evaluating the two Atana properties, I have focussed on three areas; promoting true Omani hospitality and culture to our broader international source markets, identifying and growing revenue generating opportunities within the hotels and improving operational efficiencies. Lastly, I have worked with the team to make additions and upgrades to the services, team development and facilities at the hotels to improve guest experiences. We are opening a world-class Dive Centre, developing adventure tourism activities in the area and increasing our partnerships with the local community. Are you satisfied with the occupancy levels at your hotel? Our hotel occupancies have grown over the past year and 2019 looks like a challenging, yet promising year. The positive changes to the visa system and continued focus from all sectors and stakeholders on developing Musandam as a destination will have a positive impact on occupancies. We have made significant investment in developing offers and attractions for our local, regional and international guests. In saying this, there is still room for good augmentation and more effort from all stakeholders is required to increase the attractions, services, facilities and improve year round tourism to the area.

2018-19 2017 - 18

Victor Visser

What do you think needs to be done to further promote tourism to Oman and ensure the hotels have higher occupancy figures? Oman has a unique offering in the region with a very rich and diverse culture, heritage and natural splendour. Oman offers traditional Omani hospitality and natural beauty that needs to be promoted on every level. Tourist facilities and experiences need to be further developed and showcased to be able to deal with the increased number of travellers and to be able to cater to their needs in all areas across the country.

According to you, what is the first thing that would catch a guest’s interest in your properties? Inimitable, true Omani hospitality and the natural magnificence of the area. What is the best compliment your property has received from a guest? We receive multitudes of guest comments and feedback, so without singling out a particular comment; the most common recurring points is the Omani hospitality, the hotel teams, the escape from the hustle and bustle of city life - “The Ultimate Getaway” How tough is the competition in this sector? Competition is growing in the vvhospitality sector and whilst this provides challenges, it gives us the opportunity to develop and raise our services to cater for the ever discerning guests and be the first choice for tourists What do you predict the hotel industry will be like in the next 5 years? The hotel and tourism industry in the Sultanate of Oman continues to grow and develop and new initiatives evolve each day. Hotels are shifting from providing the basic services to offering experiences, showcasing a unique product and catering to the ever emergent needs of our customers. The next 5 years bring many opportunities and Oman is positioned to offer a unique experience to discerning travellers looking for something immersive and real.

he fort of Barka and its old bull fighting arena where the bloodless bull fight still takes place is not be missed during a trip to Oman where

Brahmin bulls of a similar size are pitted against each other in a boisterous battle. The fight is fairly short, but enthusiastically received by the audience, and the bulls suffer little or no injury, unlike in Spanish bull fighting. Winning increases the value of the Bull. Bullfights are the main spectator event in Barka, these take place on Friday afternoons throughout the winter, and fairly large crowds come to the event, which is, by the way, free of charge. To find them, ask at either the Shell or Oman oil filling station on the edge of town as you drive in. It is difficult to pin point when bullfights will occur as they can be quite spontaneous affairs. On the whole, they are held on holidays and celebration days, either early in the morning, or late afternoon, when it is cooler. Bulls were traditionally brought into the Middle East for heavy labour, such as for pulling ploughs and tur ing waterwheels. With tractors and machine-driven water pumps, the traditional role of the bull has diminished, while the popularity of the bull-fighting sport has increased amongst expatriates and locals alike.

SHOPPING TIPS Whether you go to Muttrah Souk for shopping or just to wander around and soak up the atmosphere, here are a few markers that could make your trip even more enjoyable. * If you want to keep away from the crowds, visit the souk in the mornings or late afternoons. The souk is busiest in the evening hours, after 6.00 p.m. * If you have a certain item in mind, look around in more than one shop, and then choose the best piece, at the best price. Stores here tend to group together according to similarity of wares on sale. Here, you will find all the textiles in one area, the gold shops in another, which makes it very convenient for shoppers who want to compare similar items.

were used in building the trail. For lovers of mountain hiking, there is a mountainous trail that connects the village to Al Jebel Al Akhdar (Green Mountain). You can make out a stark difference in the air – there’s no dust, pollution and grime, giving it a crisp, clean and fresh feeling. There are plenty of rest points and benches along the way as the climb can be tiring for most. The stairs lead to the vantage point – the ultimate destination for most. However, if you love trekking, another 7 km onwards would lead you to the beautiful village of Jebel Akhdar. Unless you intend on camping, it’s a good idea to head back before sundown. You’ll have to take the same road back. The road does not have streetlights and can get incredibly dangerous after sunset. Though it’s very easy to lose track of time at this beautiful place, make sure you are making your way back before sunset. If you’re heading there and it starts raining (even if it’s a light drizzle), be cautious of mountain rocks that can come slipping down. At a significant height low clouds can also pose visibility issues. It is advisable to not drive when weather conditions are not on your side. Despite the task of getting to Wakan Village, the views, the people and the journey is worth every bit. A Perfect Three Day Salalah Itinerary for Khareef Season By Upasana Venaik Malhotra

S

alalah is a climatic wonderland located in Arabian peninsula. Wonderland because when rest of the middle east reaches soaring temperatures, the temperature in Salalah barely reaches 24 degree celsius. This amazing pleasant season in Salalah is well known all over the gulf as Khareef season. The Khareef season starts from the month of June and stays till the end of August. During this season the barren dry mountains turns into lush green. The valley from the mountains looks refreshing, covered with thick fog and rain. Khareef season attracts tourist from not only gulf countries but also from European and Asian countries. Salalah is a perfect escape from the hot summer of gulf. For the people travelling to Salalah, a lot of confusion prevails regarding where to travel, where to stay and where to find good food.

It is recommended to either drive a 4*4 vehicle or travel in a traveller, as the roads can be little slippery during the monsoon season.

East of Salalah has some of the must see places. So let’s begin the journey. I will suggest you to leave early from your breakfast, may be around 10 am and start you journey to east of Salalah. Our first stop would be: Ayn Athum & Ayn Tabrook Waterfalls These waterfalls are located 35 minutes away from the main city of Salalah. You can either follow google maps or take the road to route 47 and then to route 49 (road to Nashib). The signboards displayed will clearly indicate the direction to drive. Ayn Athum and Ayn Tabrook waterfalls are located on the same route, a bifurcation of the roads will indicate the direction to drive for Ayn Athum and Ayn Tabrook. Ayn Athum waterfalls are one of the most beautiful waterfalls during Khareef season and is quite famous among tourists. The drive to these waterfalls is in itself mesmerizing. Lush greenery covers both the sides of the road and the view only gets better with every turn. You find yourself waking through a forest to reach the main area of the waterfalls. Day 2 “WEST OF SALALAH Places to see Ayn Khor Waterfalls Mughsail Fazaya Haffa Souk Ayn Khor waterfalls is situated 20 kms away from the main city of Salalah in west direction near Raysut cement factory. The drive to Ayn Khor waterfall area ahead of Raysut cement factory is quite adventurous. So if you are looking for an adventurous drive during khareef season then Ayn Khor is the place you should be heading to. These are the natural waterfalls which you get to see only during monsoon season in this part of middle east. Once you reach Ayn Khor waterfalls you will be pleased with the beauty around. The place looks so refreshing, the sound of waterfall and toads playing around is itself a treat. The main source of this waterfall is believed to be from the highest mountain wadi Jurdum. The view of the valley is enchanting. You can just sit next to the waterfall area or next to the stream. Be careful of dipping into the pool below the

waterfall as it could be really deep. The turquoise color of the pool and the sound of strong waterfall is attracts a lot of tourists. You can also enjoy tangy mangoes else you can carry your own food if you are interested to have a picnic day here. You can leave from here for Mughsail, the most stunning place in Salalah. It will take another 30 to 40 minutes to reach. Post cyclone Mekunu a new diverted route has been made, the drive has become even more mesmerizing. During Khareef you can witness trio color of the ocean i.e. grey, blue and emerald. Mughsail is undoubtedly the most famous place to visit in Salalah, not only for tourists but also for the locals. The view of ocean from Marneef cave is so rewarding. Due to high tides during the Khareef season, you can witness jet streams gushing out through the mesh covering the opening in the rocks, famously called as blow holes. Mughsail is the one of the most spectacular place and you will soak yourself in the beauty of nature. You can also sit across the ocean near the Mughsail bay beach area. If you are seeking more adventure you can drive ahead from mughsail to Fazaya beach located 40 minutes away. Fazaya beach is an isolated beach with beauty of its own. The white

FRANKINCENSE The Scent of Oman

Boswellia sacra comes from the Dhofar region of southern

Boswellia sacra. It is used in incense and perfumes. In Oman

region borders Yemen to the west and Saudi Arabia to the

rankincense, also called Luban in Arabic, is an aromatic

resin obtained from trees of the genus Boswellia, particularly where the finest Frankincense in the world comes from, it is considered a gift of God. Oman enjoys the privilege of being the olfactory hub with its much celebrated frankincense reserves in Dhofar. Frankincense has been traded on the Arabian Peninsula and in North Africa for more than 5000 years. A mural depicting sacks of frankincense traded from the Land of Punt adorns the walls of the temple of ancient Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut, who died in 1458 BCE. The lost city of Ubar, what is now the town of Shisr in Oman, is believed to have been a centre of the frankincense trade along the recently rediscovered “Incense Road”. Ubar was rediscovered in the early 1990s and is now under archaeological

excavation.

Oman Frankincense, Boswellia Sacra is one of Earth’s greatest treasures. A precious substance revered through the ages. In the ancient world frankincense was valued more than gold and in our time it is a rare and unique gift. The scent is historically connected with healing and spirituality in almost every culture and religion.

Oman Covering about 100,000 square kilometers, the Dhofar north. The trees do not like moisture and thrive in barren areas cooled by sea winds. The ancient twisted trees with crinkly leaves spring unexpectedly to life every September with an explosion of white star flowers. An incision is made into the silvery bark, from which drips the fragrant “pearls”, white globules of resin called luban. Left to dry, this will turn transparent after about two weeks. There are numerous species and varieties of frankincense trees, each producing a slightlyv different type of resin. Differences in soil and climate create even more diversity of the resin, even within the same species. Frankincense trees are also considered unusual for their ability to grow in environments so unforgiving that they sometimes grow directly out of solid rock. The means of initial attachment to the stone is not known but is accomplished by a bulbous disk-like swelling of the trunk. This disk-like growth at the base of the tree prevents it from being torn away from the rock during the violent storms that frequent the region they grow in. This feature is slight or absent in trees grown in rocky soil or gravel. The tears from these hardy survivors are considered superior due to their more fragrant aroma.

including

Silver. Resin value is determined not only by

fragrance but also by color and clump size, with lighter color and larger clumps being more highly prized.

Uses Frankincense is used in perfumery and aromatherapy. Olibanum essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the dry resin. Some of the smell of the olibanum smoke is due to the products of pyrolysis. Traditional medicine Frankincense resin is edible and often used in various traditional medicines in Asia for digestion and healthy skin. Edible frankincense must be pure for internal consumption, meaning it should be translucent, with no black or brown impurities. It is often light yellow with a very slight greenish tint. It is often chewed like gum, but it is stickier because it is a resin. Burning frankincense is believed to repel mosquitos and thus helps protect people and animals from mosquito-borne illnesses, such as malaria, West Nile Virus, and Dengue Fever. At the height of the Roman Empire, Dhofar was exporting immense quantities of frankincense, by ship to Yemen and up the Red Sea, and by camel caravan overland to Petra and the Mediterranean. Photo Š Bait Al Zubair Foundation

Flowers and branches of the Boswellia sacra tree, the species from which most frankincense is derived. The trees start producing resin when they are about 8 to 10 years old. Tapping is done 2 to 3 times a year with the final taps producing the best tears due to their higher aromatic terpene, sesquiterpene and diterpene content. Generally speaking, the more opaque resins are the best quality. Dhofari frankincense obtained from Boswellia sacra is said to be the best in the world.

Quality Frankincense comes in many types, and its quality is based on colour, purity, aroma, and age, and shape. Silver and Hojari are generally considered the highest grades of frankincense. The Omanis themselves generally consider Silver to be a better grade than Hojari, though most Western connoisseurs think that it should be the other way round. This may be due to climatic conditions with the Hojari smelling best in the relatively cold, damp climate of Europe and North America, whereas Silver may well be more suited to the hot dry conditions of Arabia. Local market information in Oman suggests that the term Hojari encompasses a broad range of high-end frankincense
