Principles Of Design

Cardboard Cathedral,New Zealand

Repetition

Repetition of triangle shapes can be seen in the facade of the building and so does the tinted glass panels which are also shaped in triangle form

Unity and Hierarchy

A sense of combineness can be seen in the front elevation and rear elevation of the building thus giving a sense of unity because of both being shaped like triangles. Even the small triangles show a sense of hierarchy.

Movement

Since the building is a cathedral there is an aisle leading to the other end.

Colour

Use of Tinted glass panels

Texture Use of Cardboard For enclosure material construction

Corners Light Light can be seen entering through the tinted glass panels and the top of the cathedral where the 2 planes meet.

The plan of the corners are articulated and are not kept straight so as to focus on the aisle ending in the end.

Configuration of Path Since the structure is a cathedral thus it has axial plan and so is its path configuration.

Approach The approach to the cathedral is direct and straight

Plan Line

Entrance

The entry to the building is simple sliding door but in the sides there are glass panels for the outsiders to interest inside.

Path Space Relationship

As the cathedral is approached from the entrance the size of the plan gets shorter and concentrates in the end.

The volume of the space reduces as we approach to the end of the structure.

Space to Space Relation

Space Within Space The presence of different spaces inside the main structure can be seen thus it has configuration of space within space.
