CONVERGENCE ON 2ND Des Moines, Iowa M.Arch III, Spring 2018 Inter-disciplinary Studio Team: Deep Chaniara (M.Arch) Nate McKewon (M.Arch) Van Ly (B.Arch)
This project pursued to converge a new Federal Courthouse typology on a site where the City of Des Moines had favored to be commercially developed. The proposal explored a solution where a federal court could maintain its monumental characters while being closely-integrated with apartments, restaurants, coffee shops, and bars; all of which would further cultivate the city’s social scenes. The architectural framework outlined the prismatic urban form with two distinguished structures that celebrated the public vibrancy along the Des Moines River. My roles in this project were design leader and team spokesman.

HOWE SENIOR LIVING Ogden, Iowa M.Arch II, Fall 2016 Net-Zero Design Studio Team: Deep Chaniara (M.Arch) Noel Gonzalez (M.Arch) This senior living complex explored the idea of repurposing the existing Howe Elementary School into a new architecture driven by net zero design. The design was consciously articulated by preserving the existing structure and deriving the proposed programs - nursing home, assisted living, and recreational spaces for the residents - around it. Additionally, it integrated indooroutdoor community spaces to encourage interaction between the residents and the community. My roles in this project were to develop the conceptual design, digital model, as well as graphic representations.

BASE DE NIĂ‘OS Lima, Peru M.Arch II, Spring 2017 Design-Build Studio Team: Studio Andino 2017 The motive of this design-build studio was to further understand architecture as a tool to protect and inspire the imagination of a community aiming for a better future. Base de Ninos is a pavilion that sits on the challenging terrain of the informal neighborhood of Lima, Peru near Chorrilos; this location was conscientiously chosen as it would offer a remarkable view of the South Pacific Ocean. The pavilion was designed to perform as a multifunctional space that could be used as a study or play room for the kids of the community. Also, the space could be used as a meeting room for the housewives on their free time, or a social spot for the local festivals. The chosen materials were also carefully decided upon in order to keep the interior of the shelter cool in such hot climatic conditions. My roles in this project were to lead the research about local materials, their costs, and coordination with the Alto Peru (local NGO involved in this design-build).

TECH - CART Lima, Peru M.Arch II | Spring 2017 Urban Design Studio Team: Deep Chaniara (M.Arch) Mark Moeckl (M.Arch) Nate McKewon (M.Arch) Noel Gonzalez (M.Arch) TECH-CART (Tactically Empowering Community Hubs via Collective Application Requested Trailers) presented a solution to combat some of the problems that have materialized as a result of dramatic population growth and unplanned urban policies. This project proposed the development of a temporary Urbanism in the city of Lima, Peru by delivering real solutions as a response to real needs through the creation of a responsive and adaptive urban environment that could integrate different functions into a coherent system. TECHCART emphasized an unbounded landscape rather than an over-coded, delimited environment, essentially revolutionizing how the city of Lima can be served. This idea was a temporary urban construct that afforded a progressive platform for participation, and a physical intervention in the spaces of the everyday life. My contributions to this project were to design the urban responsive system and create coherent graphic representations.

DRAWING ON THE PAST Maheshwar, India B.Arch II | 2012 Regional Study Program Team: B.Arch II and B.Arch III studio (2012) The goal of this program was to experience the culture of rural India and document its rich heritage. Maheshwar, often referred as a temple town, opt its name from one of the grand lord in the Hindu religion- Lord Shiva. This documentation was focused on understanding the formation of temples, bathing ghats, mighty fort complexes which stand for its quiet beauty and intricate details. The study incorporated all the temples spreaded along the holy Narmada river bank. These temples and massive fort complex, built around 1600, offered an unusual charm of architectural grandeur. The layered spaces inside these complexes suggested unique spatial relationship to the Hindu rituals. Both- macro and micro scale were equally considered to understand the genesis of this unique heritage.

REJUVENATING SHANIVARI Surat, India B.Arch IV, 2014 La-Journal Competition Team: Deep Chaniara (B.Arch) Harshita Borah (B.Arch) The task for the Shanivari Bazar, Surat, India was to establish a well-organized market space that would not disturb the community’s accustomed activities. To do so, a raised level for the bazar transitions with two lanes for the customers along a higher central platform for the vendors was introduced. This design process went through an abstraction of the literal concept of City-Surat’s timeline as being rooted to the history of its waters. Furthermore, the proposal attempted portrayed the virtual past with the help of Urban translations using various landscape elements. The objective of the entire development was to consider and achieve a moral outlook rather than a design solution.
