This annual report marks Integral Group’s fifth annual publication since we started our CSER journey. The past five years have been a continuous process of improvement and re-imagination, driven by the personal and collective leadership within the firm. We aim to transform the industry, as it will take every player in it to achieve success. Looking back on 2021, the second year of an ongoing pandemic, paired with intense social issues, and natural disasters brought on by the climate crisis, I continued to focus on building trust and transparency to best serve our people, clients, and communities.

There has never been a more important time to stand behind our CSER strategy. This was a year that I am proud to say we forged forward as a firm, continuing to grow our social impact approach and strategically refocusing on services that would future-proof our business and make sustainable futures a reality. I am committed to ensuring Integral Group remains a driving force for change, putting pressure on the market to transform through the intersections of sustainability, technology, and social impact. We were a founding signatory of the World Green Building Council’s Net Zero Buildings Commitment and achieved netzero for Scope 1+2 operational emissions 10 years ahead of schedule. Our commitment to Net Zero will be expanding to include every project work we work on as part of the 2040 MEP Challenge we signed in 2021. Since 2013, Integral has made a long-term commitment to employ socially just employment practices by enrolling in ILFI’s Just.(SM) Label program. Peak Mural
Inspired by our work to combat the environmental and social impacts of climate change, our Vancouver employees came together to paint Peak, a mural brought to life from the imagination of Creative Services Marketing Manager, Cathy Chan. The mural depicts a mountainous landscape, with the landscape's lines generated from graphs of global climate records for carbon dioxide emissions, temperature, sea-level change, and arctic sea ice extent from 1880–2020. This art piece came together with the collective effort of staff who helped paint the mural over five days. This installation serves as inspiration for why we do the work we do to address climate change. Together, we can move mountains.

In 2021, we took the Commitment one step further and included our fleet vehicle Scope 1 emissions to net-zero through the purchase of Good Quality Carbon offsets that are consistent with the Oxford Principles for Net Zero Aligned Carbon Offsetting.

We continually track our performance in this category in alignment with the World Resource Institute’s (WRI) greenhouse gas (GHG) emission protocols and actively seek ways to improve our environmental performance in alignment with the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC)’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment (Commitment). Zero Carbon Commitment | We take our commitment to a deep green future seriously. As a founding signatory of the WorldGBC Commitment, we ensure we are leading the way by reducing our emissions where we can. New CIBSE Guide on Embodied Carbon in Residential Heating Systems
Research shows that embodied carbon in heating and hot-water systems account for up to 25% of a dwelling’s total embodied carbon. Building on the work of TM65, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and Elementa Consulting present their most recent research study, TM65.1: Embodied carbon in building services: residential heating. The guide will enable building service engineers to understand the impact of the systems they design and the products they specify.
Passive House Offers Refuge in a Heating Planet
Clayton Community Centre is Canada’s largest Passive House building, establishing a new standard for sustainable, climate resilient design. During a recent extreme heat wave, the centre was used as a community cooling centre, providing refuge to vulnerable community members.

Net Zero Impact | Committed to making a net zero future a reality, through our operations, our work and our influence.
Beyond Buildings, a report issued by the World Green Building Council, with direction and authorship from Integral Group’s Global Lead of Life Cycle Research Louise Hamot and Director, Global Sustainability Richard Palmer, identifies opportunities for how an integrated approach to the whole built environment is essential to deliver change commensurate with the commitments of the Paris Agreement.
Integral Group proudly supports the Carbon Leadership Forum as a signatory member of the MEP 2040 Challenge. To address the impact of the built environment on climate change, systems engineers have a critical role to play in both operational and embodied carbon and need to embrace a whole life carbon approach to MEP design. While low operational carbon and passive design measures have been a target for some time, setting low embodied carbon targets for systems is quite new.
Integral Group became a founding signatory of the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) Net Zero Carbon Buildings (NZCB) Commitment. The Commitment requires businesses, cities, and regions to take advanced climate action by setting targets to eliminate operational carbon emissions from their building portfolios by 2030, starting with Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions). In 2020, we successfully achieved net-zero carbon emissions for Scopes 1 and 2, ten years ahead of the requirement, and in 2021 released our Zero Carbon Operations (ZCO) Implementation Plan to remain accountable to the Commitment’s goals.

International Women’s Day + Women in Engineering Day
Integral Group takes the opportunity each year on International Women’s Day to take stock of our progress towards our 2030 target of gender parity, refocus our strategy and celebrate our progress. We are proud of the wealth of female talent we have attracted and continue to nurture. Women of Integral continue to represent our firm as thought leaders, shape our most important policies, and accelerate the deep green work we are doing across the globe.
Global Just 2.0 Label
Diversity Council + Employee Resource Groups
Our internal Diversity Council is a team made up of global representatives from each of our operating regions who worked alongside Integral Group’s Wellness Council and CSER team to launch the Employee Resource Group (ERG) Program in early 2021. The ERGs are voluntary, team member-led groups focused on fostering diversity, inclusion and belonging. These groups help team members build strong connections; offer social, educational, and outreach activities; create development opportunities for future leaders, and work towards elevating and prioritizing the unique needs of each group. UC JEDI-Centered Climate Resilience Planning
The Integral Group consultant team was solicited to design and facilitate climate resilience planning workshops for all 15 University of California campuses and medical centers. This planning centers the need for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) in order to address existing inequalities that make some communities more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The team developed and 8-step framework to guide each campus and medical center in understanding the key concepts and steps involved in JEDIcentered climate resilience planning.
Our unique backgrounds, experiences, value systems and many other differences are things to be proud of, and acknowledging them is a great start toward promoting a well-rounded workplace. Enabling employees and empowering them to leverage the diversity in their thought process and decision-making tends to promote organizational resilience and growth.
We celebrate the transparency and external benchmarking obtained from our renewal of the JUSTSM 2.0 Label in 2021. We observe that our scores support the message our annual metrics have been displaying in that we must continue to push for greater representation of underrepresented groups, mainly women and underrepresented minority groups, especially in positions of leadership.

Marjorie McClure School (UK) is entirely for Special Needs Education (SNE) children and is part for the Department for Education Sustainability Pilot scheme. Integral Group was appointed to undertake the MEP design and Sustainability Consultancy for this Net Zero targeting project which has also become a testament to what can be achieved virtually as it has been designed nearly entirely remotely.

In February 2021, our Anti-Racism Task Force (ARTF), a grassroots group of 48 self-selected employees, released its Anti-Racism Action Plan. The Action Plan spans a timeline of now, next, and future leading up to 2030 and was developed through open dialogue sessions and workshops. We aim to create pathways of mobility and access for marginalized, under-resourced, and underrepresented groups.

We continue to stand in solidarity against all forms of racism, keep the internal and external anti-racist dialogue going, and embed meaningful actions into operational programs. These commitments to action have become a driving force within our Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion efforts as a firm.

Reconciliation | In late 2021, Reconciliation Working Groups were formed in two of our regions, Australia and Canada. These groups will guide our reconciliation strategy and action planning which will take place throughout 2022 and beyond. European Offices Celebrate Company Day
Our UK + Serbia teams celebrated their first in-person Company Day since the Covid-19 lockdown. Company Day is an annual event where employees come together to celebrate past successes and understand the future focus for the business. This year’s gathering was especially poignant as we celebrate 35 years of operation in the UK. Featuring external presenters such as Lamington Group and Mates in Mind, there were many insightful talks throughout the day, followed by time to connect for some team-building and fun bonding activities.

LEED Zero Energy Certified Medical Office Building
Retrofit, Wellness and Smart Features
The office building refurbishment and fit-out project at 15 Bonhill Street, London, provides a new contemporary office space which incorporates multiple health and wellness features and targets Fitwel Certification. With features like greywater harvesting, seasonal vegetation produced on site for consumption, integration of nature, natural daylight optimization, on-site bicycle storage, dedicated wellness spaces, exercise rooms, and a winter garden space, this is a true exemplification of a healthy building.
This all-electric medical office building is measured and verified Zero Net Energy and Zero Net Carbon…all at a first cost savings of over $1M! The concept includes pragmatic design solutions that meet or exceed the LEED Gold sustainability requirement. The project has received a LEED Zero Energy Certification, the first for a medical facility in North America. It is LEED Platinum Certified, earning every available energy credit, and received the 2021 USGBC Leadership Award.
Living Building Challenge Zero Carbon & Petal Certified
The Sonoma Academy Janet Durgin Guild + Commons project has received the first-ever Living Building Challenge (LBC) Zero Carbon Certification in California and is the first project to be both Zero Carbon and Petal Certified (Energy, Materials, Equity, Beauty) by International Living Future Institute. The project is also LEED Platinum certified and is currently targeting WELL v2. This is yet another testament to the project’s revolutionary sustainable design and operation that puts wellness, sustainability, and occupant comfort at the forefront.
Health and well-being is about providing a safe environment for everyone to do their best work and feel that they can thrive. Employees should talk to their friends and colleagues about the good times as well as the not-so-good in their life. As an engineering firm we solve both simple and complex engineering problems everyday by working together. We must create that same environment for our people to solve life problems while supporting their unique and personal needs.

Combustion Free in Vermont
Burr and Burton Academy expanded their campus with Founders Hall, a new 25,000 ft2, three-story center for integrated studies. The net-zero ready designed building surrounds a new mass timber library, designed to promote psychological health and wellness among its occupants.

Earth Day Volunteering Event for the Austin, Texas Office
Our Austin, Texas office has an annual tradition of volunteering together to celebrate Earth Day. This year, they were able to utilize their Integral Gives hours to volunteer with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, where they were able to reconnect with nature, devoting the day to getting their hands dirty, weeding the gardens, and enjoying time together while giving back to their community.

In 2021 Integral Group and its employees supported over 20 charitable organizations, including:
The category of Education + Impact covers our commitment to internal professional training, development, and employee engagement, as well as external involvement and contributions to our local communities. Through our youth outreach, internship program, and internal education, we look to build a future pipeline of engineers and environmental activists. Integral Gives | Launched in 2021, the Integral Gives program was a passion project stemming from the Impact Fund. Integral Gives helped create our global framework which formalizes the commitment and approach we use to giving back to our local communities. Aligning with the goals in our Anti-Racism Task Force Action Plan and Just 2.0 Label, Integral Gives focuses on supporting our communities by utilizing our technical expertise, time, and funds. The program focuses on giving back, offering each employee flexible paid volunteer hours to use throughout the year through volunteering, youth outreach, and pro bono work. Integral Gives also manages the firm-wide charitable giving. In 2021, Integral Group donated >1% of net profit, supporting ten charitable organizations globally. There were also several grassroots fundraisers brought forward by employees supported by the firm at the office level.

Building Forward – Educating the Next Generation
We also extend congratulations to Andrew Mather, Regional Director, and Ken Loh, Senior Principal who have been selected again to mentor the 2021-2022 cohort. Ken, now in his fifth year as a mentor said “Investing in our future leaders is a way to give back to the industry that has provided me with so many opportunities. Plus, there is so much to learn from our mentees”.
The Chesapeake Bay – Mason and Joan Brock Classroom addition is a project that struck us near and dear to the heart, with a compelling mission to create a facility that will educate future generations and hopefully guide them towards sustainably focused careers. The project demonstrated unwavering commitment to educate the community on the importance and fragility of the bay, we designed a classroom expansion to meet Net Zero energy, Net Zero Water, and ILFI Material Rd List requirements in the heart of this environmentally-sensitive ecosystem.
Organic Mentorship Program. Mentorship is a key piece of the puzzle when it comes to nurturing and growing talent within the firm. Focused on developing, supporting, building confidence, and guiding employees in their career path’s, the Tell Us More mentorship program offers organic avenues to mentorship. With a diverse group of mentors available across the globe, employees may select the right fit for them to build and leverage the mentorship relationship to best suit their unique needs.
Since 2012, we have taken the opportunity to celebrate the most impactful projects through the annual Integral Awards initiative, created by our founder, Kevin Hydes. The awards celebrate technical excellence on projects, as well as innovation through internal initiatives. The awards are externally adjudicated by recognized experts from their respective fields within the industry. University of Victoria Student Residences
Integral Group is providing mechanical engineering consulting and energy modelling services to the new student residence of University of Victoria in addition to a new commercial kitchen, server and dining facility serving the entire campus. New conference spaces and classrooms are also included as part of the development. The new student housing will consist of 780 bedrooms with associated lounge and study spaces split across two buildings with phased construction.
We are supporting the building design team and client by providing information on mechanical system options, infrastructure requirements, space planning, thermal comfort concepts, overheating analysis, Passive House mechanical design guidance, energy reduction and energy targets. The project is targeting Passive House and LEED Gold Certification with the first phase slated for completion in 2022.

The Safety + Resilience category represents our internal governance structure as well as the project and planning work we undertake and lead in the realm of resilience. We embrace the traditional approach to Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) which guides us to ensure our offices remain a safe place for employees to work. IT Disaster Recovery Plans
As part of the Information Technology Business Continuity Plan, a global disaster recovery approach has been determined and documented to ensure an Emergency Notification Team and Support teams are now in place to guarantee a swift and efficient recovery no matter what the disaster circumstance requires. The plan includes a revised data backup policy, emergency management procedures, and damage assessment protocols.
Never has the importance of Safety & Resilience been so critical to our business, our colleagues and our clients. The past two years have required us to look at how we operate and maintain our business, how we work remotely, and how we continue to deliver great work for our clients. We have refocussed our approach to building design in light of the global virus that has impacted us all to reinforce the importance of safety within buildings and systems.

The Legal, Compliance, and Risk team (LCR) hosted “Summer Series” of informal 30–60-minute risk management presentations on various topics, including design-build, residential related services, hiring former government employees, cross border considerations, large developer infrastructure projects, and scope as mitigation.
Bays West Sustainability Strategy
The environmental sustainability priorities facing governments and communities globally are brought into focus for the strategic renewal of Sydney Harbor. The sustainability focus for the strategic renewal of Sydney Harbor required a framework built on governance, assurance, and built environment certification. Stakeholders gained clarity of authority across the project life cycle and into the future. The sustainability concepts are framed by an overarching commitment to Connection with Country – the recognition and responsibility that this place was, is, and will continue to be a place of cultural significance for Aboriginal Peoples of Australia.

Navigating Complex Rate Structures + PPAs
The goal of the Campus at Horton Plaza Redevelopment study was to assist the client in designing a solar and storage system, selecting an applicable rate structure, and negotiating an appropriate Power Performance Agreement (PPA) that would allow for maximum cost savings in the face of design and operational uncertainty brought on by COVID-19. By using stochastic analysis over financial analysis, Integral Group enabled the client to consider key factors such as drastic utility rate swings, weather variations, and building demand shifts which lead to maximized savings.
Climate change is already affecting our communities today, with heatwaves, flooding and other climate-related impacts becoming more severe into the future. By integrating a climate resilience lens, our design and planning teams are playing a key role in designing buildings that are safer, more comfortable and that will better stand up to future conditions.

Sonoma Academy Janet Durgin Guild + Commons, California The Janet Durgin Guild and Commons has been awarded the first Living Building Challenge Zero Carbon Certification in California, and was the first to be both Zero Carbon and Petals (Energy, Materials, Equity, Beauty) Certified by ILFI. The Guild is a large maker space that opens onto a patio and outdoor teaching spaces, providing hands-on learning experiences related to industrial design, engineering, electronics, and animation and film.
