building services design

Building services engineers play a crucial role in designing and maintaining sustainable schools.

The need for resilient, healthy, low carbon education facilities requires solutions that reduce emissions while improving building user comfort. our approach is to create healthy buildings that lead in sustainable design, construction and operations.

We understand the impact that educational facilities have on the quality of the teaching, learning environment, and student outcomes, while also contributing to improved environmental quality.

our role is to understand the unique needs of the building and its occupants, and incorporate energy-efficient systems and renewable technologies that not only reduce the school’s environmental impact, but also improve the indoor air

quality, thermal comfort and overall wellbeing of the students and staff.

By investing in healthy education facilities, we provide a healthy and productive learning environment for students, while educating them about sustainable practices and preparing them for the workforce of the future.

Building a Positive Impact

We combine leading-edge technical knowledge with a sensitivity to architecture, heritage and interior design.

We’re experienced in the commercial realities with regard to effective use of space and repetition to the benefit of design efficiencies, where we bring learnings and innovations from previous projects.

Adaptive Learning Spaces

Learning spaces are the very core of academic life. While these spaces must meet the latest standards in educational design, they should also remain flexible enough to accommodate emerging thought on teaching techniques and classroom configurations.

The educational needs and practices of facilities are constantly evolving and this requires learning spaces to be adaptable.

Innovation

our design and solutions are characterised by creative responses to functional and operational issues.

Innovations to consider include biophilic design, integrated technology, the use of sustainable materials and green roofs and walls, all of which we have experience of designing into schemes.

Integration

Introba understand the importance of designing schools that are integrated into the surrounding community, with shared spaces and resources such as libraries and recreational areas.

There are many other considerations such as the integration of science labs and art studios to support hands-on learning. We ensure that the building services design includes the most appropriate liighting controls, acoustic design, indoor air quality and renewable energy solutions.

Resilience For The Future

Buildings play a key role in preventing the adverse effects of climate change by employing design strategies to both reduce GHG emissions and adapt to current and projected impacts.

At Introba, we have the knowledge and experience to create healthy, highperformance learning environments that enable estates to combine the needs of students and staff with the need for energy conservation and carbon reduction, all while keeping costs down.

Leaders In Sustainability

Carrying net positive, low carbon and carbon positive design to an estate requires identifying synergies between buildings and across systems at estates, starting with the premise of net zero energy or net positive energy and net zero water at the building scale.

Institutions need to construct buildings that are built to last far into the future, creating healthy spaces that enhance the health and comfort of people using the estate’s facilities. At the same time, there is a need to respect and protect the local ecosystem and take climate action to deliver on carbon neutrality commitments.

Hackbridge Primary School London, UK

Hackbridge is a new build primary school for 420 pupils aged 5-11 built next to the pioneering BedZED One Planet Living development. It is the UK’s first true net zero carbon school (regulated and unregulated), and the first to be ‘PassivHaus plus’ certified.

Careful consideration has been taken to select materials that are healthy, have low embodied energy and be easy to construct and maintain.

To achieve Net Zero Carbon the design applies rigorous PassivHaus building envelope insulation and air tightness requirements, with triple glazed windows that enhance thermal comfort and provide excellent daylighting.

A highly efficient ground source heat pump system with inter-seasonal heat storage meets space heating demands. To meet summer peaks and provide resiliency against climate change the system can operate in reverse cycle to provide free cooling.

A rooftop PV array provides renewable electricity to offset 100% annual energy demands, solar thermal panels meeting 80% of hot water needs.

Kisharon School London, UK

Kisharon School for children with learning disabilities, has undergone a large expansion and refurbishment programme. The new additions include six new classrooms, a hydrotherapy pool as well as kitchen and dining facilities.

The clients brief stressed the importance of making the school more user friendly for both staff and pupils, as it was previously split into multiple sites across the area. The most demanding buildings were consolidated into one larger site, and this allowed Introba to ensure stability and consistency of services such as ventilation and temperature control throughout the facility, guaranteeing maximum comfort levels and minimal distractions for students.

Due to working with a listed building, we worked closely with the architect and conservation officer to ensure the interventions to upgrade the building services were respectful of the listed status and associated features.

This refurbishment has dramatically improved the school. The expanded and updated facilities will not only benefit the staff and pupils, but also the local community as well.

Marjorie McClure School London, UK

Marjorie McClure is an all-age school catering for a diverse range of SEND students aged 4-19 years. The children have a range of complex needs, which include physical, medical and / or moderate and profound learning difficulties, and a range of sensory needs. The design seeks to align with the school’s educational vision that learning is an adventure, filled with inspirational and creative opportunities.

The new design is a single storey level access building as it was important to the school that the students can move around the building independently. The layout forms a horseshoe shape with out-of-hours larger communal spaces located to the front of the school. The plan is punctuated by two courtyards, which allow daylight and air to penetrate the School.

The project is part of the DfE’s Sustainability Pilot Scheme, which has been developed in response to the UK Government target to achieve net-zero ‘greenhouse gas’ emissions by 2050. In response we set energy use intensity targets aligned to the LETI guidance and combined with a highly optimised façade performance have developed the services strategy to minimise energy consumption. The building is naturally ventilated in summer with a central heat recovery mechanical solution for winter which coupled with an air source heat pump system to provide heating via the ventilation air.

Berkhamsted School Deans Hall

Berkhamsted, UK

This project consists of the refurbishment of Deans Hall, the Secondary School’s main assembly hall within a listed Victorian building. The existing hall suffered from overheating in summer limiting its practical usefulness. To provide the school with a more multifunctional space this space was value engineered to remove the need to construct a new build lecture theatre and in the process significantly enhancing the utilisation of this beautiful space. The Hall has 3 settings to cater for a 550 person assembly, 250 person raked seating lecture theatre arrangement (using movable bleacher seating) and a general exam/function space arrangement (used commercially for weddings etc).

Introba surveyed the original ventilation strategy and innovatively retrofitted a new concealed ventilation and cooling heat rejection system using the existing cupola and external louvres as air paths which as a result the project did not require Planning Consent – a key project driver.

Variable air volumes are supplied for the different function settings with enhanced ventilation provided in the exam setting in line with academic research showing enhanced cognitive performance. The comfort controls and new audio-visual system are automatically controlled by staff based on the use setting required through touch screen panel (and for FM staff via BMS).
