The Arbour Our goal was to inspire our industry to think that lowcarbon and high sustainability targets were not only for the bespoke icons, but for every building, and in so doing propel the green building and the nascent mass timber industry forward. Carol Phillips, Moriyama & Teshima Architects

The Arbour, anticipated to become Toronto’s first tall wood, low carbon institutional building, will bring a unique deep green element to the George Brown College waterfront campus. The 10-storey state-of-the-art structure will revolutionize Toronto’s building landscape and advance Canada’s sustainability agenda by becoming the first tall wood research institute in the country, with materials sourced nationally. A net zero carbon target has been set by George Brown College in their commitment to sustainability as well as LEED Gold (minimum) and Toronto Green Standard (TGS) V3 Tier 4. The building will serve as an educational hub—housing research, teaching, and learning—as well as a childcare facility to accommodate the rapidly growing local community.

The proposed design pays homage to Canada’s signature wood-framed single-family housing, with mass wood and pitched roof components. Occupant wellness and comfort was a priority in design, as the facility features radiant ceilings, under floor air delivery and breathing rooms with solar chimney systems for sustainable, natural light and ventilation. Expandable and contractible walls will allow for flexibility of learning spaces when required. In addition, a smart building system will equip the building with integrated, intelligent and adaptable technology throughout.

At the forefront of sustainability, the Stack is one of the only two high-rise towers in Canada to be a part of the Net Zero Carbon pilot program, in addition to its LEED Platinum target. We’re future-proofing the building for the adoption of smart building technology with cutting edge mechanical and electrical systems. Jubin Jalili, Integral Group © James KM Cheng | Architects Inc

The Stack is destined to be a symbolic, revolutionary development in the heart of downtown Vancouver. The 550 foot tall tower is targeting LEED Platinum certification, challenging industry norms and raising the bar for future projects. With a total floor area of 670,000ft², the tower will sit at 36 stories tall with 6 levels of underground parking. Integral Group are providing mechanical, electrical, fire protection, sustainability and energy modeling, technology and integration consulting services for this icon of commercial green engineering. The Stack is strategically designed to incorporate amenities and roof terraces offering panoramic views over Vancouver. Its artistic and unique architecture will offer a one-of-a-kind residency option for buyers and prime real estate for commercial and retail. The lower floors of the building are well-suited for tech companies, with corporate and executive suites on the mid and upper floors. Integral Group are utilizing an integrated design process (IDP) to ensure multidisciplinary coordination and project success. The Stack showcases Integral’s high-performance building experience and sustainable, green engineering innovation. Technology

A mixed-use scheme provided with infrastructure and plant to create an integrated smart building which transforms how a building and the occupants interact, and how the building reacts to occupant demand and external influences.

150 Holborn is a new build commercial development, the majority of which is office space as well as a small number of retail and residential units. The development has areas which are overshadowed by surrounding buildings, and areas which have high solar exposure. Simulations were carried out to calculate the appropriate external shading fin density for every façade orientation and at every floor level. This ensures that the lower levels receive a good quality of daylight and the upper levels are protected from solar gains. The ‘planning scheme’ shading strategy was regular and linear, and resulted in solar exposure that varied across the building. The resultant shading solution varies with height and orientation and sits seamlessly within the architectural vision. A key element of the building will be a central atrium running from the ground floor to the roof. A feature stair linking the floors is designed to maximise interaction and collaboration between floors. The top floor will be comprised of an executive and client suite and the intermediate floors, office space. The ground floor will include a reception, café, retail space and meeting areas for staff collaboration.
