Jersey City-Historical Timeline A complex 400-year history with lots of ups and downs Initially started as an agglomeration of Dutch colonial settlements in the early 17th century Gradually developed into an important port, transportation hub and industrial centre in the 19th century Severely affected by political corruption, economic downturn, civil unrest, etc in the first half of the 20th century Large scale development in the past few decades Stands today as the second largest city in New Jersey (both in terms of area and population) having one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the United States.

•A business district, residential area, and transportation hub in Jersey City, New Jersey, taking its name from the Jersey Journal newspaper, whose headquarters were located there
•Located at the intersection of Kennedy Boulevard and Bergen Avenues and includes Bergen Square, McGinley Square, India Square, the Five Corners and parts of the Marion Section • The Square is one of the most ethnically diverse urban neighborhoods in the United States.

•Largest age group in Journal Square area is the young workforce (25-34 years old) growing from 19% in 2000 to 24% in 2010, next is the age group 35-44 years, so 77% of the population is workforce population, many of whom require the transit to commute to New York City and different parts of New Jersey
•Only 4 out of Jersey City’s 31 affordable housing in the Journal Square Redevelopment Area, need for more
•Being part of the Journal Square Special Improvement District (JSSID) and with more than 64% of the commercial area coming under Urban Enterprise Zone, goal of making Journal Square “a flourishing central business and shopping destination” can easily be materialized
•Mixed-use transit oriented development is the way forward
