In many ways, the promise of Deerfield —our ideals and aspirations—and our mission are embodied in the buildings in which we live and learn. — Dr. John P.N. Austin, Head of School

THE D.S. CHEN HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTER IS SYMBOLIC OF OUR CORE COMMITMENT TO THE HEALTH, WELL-BEING, AND THE FLOURISHING OF ALL OF OUR STUDENTS. IN THIS WAY, IT IS A PROFOUND EXPRESSION OF OUR DEEPEST COMMITMENTS AND TRADITIONS. IT IS ALSO A STRONG SHOW OF SUPPORT FOR THE WORK THAT OUR COUNSELORS, NURSES, DOCTORS, AND STAFF DO TO CARE FOR, GUIDE, AND MENTOR STUDENTS. IN THE ACADEMIC REALM, WE STRIVE TO TEACH STUDENTS TO BE LIFE-LONG LEARNERS, TO ALWAYS BE CURIOUS, AND ENGAGED IN THEIR ENDEAVORS. THE CHEN CENTER WILL HELP STUDENTS LEAD LIVES OF BALANCE—NOT JUST WHILE THEY ARE AT DEERFIELD BUT IN COLLEGE AND BEYOND.

AT THE DEDICATION IN OCTOBER 2019, I SAW ALUMNI, PARENTS, TRUSTEES, AND 3

EMPLOYEES COMING TOGETHER, BRINGING THEIR GENEROSITY, EXPERTISE, TIME, AND EFFORT TO BEAR IN SERVICE OF THIS SCHOOL. THERE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT BEING AT THE BEGINNING OF A BUILDING’S JOURNEY. THIS IS A DAY WE WILL REMEMBER AND BE PROUD OF AS WE CONTINUE TO COME TOGETHER AND STRENGTHEN DEERFIELD IN THE MONTHS AND YEARS AHEAD.

I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE MY FRIEND AND PREDECESSOR DR. MARGARITA CURTIS, WHO WAS AT THE HELM WHEN THIS PROJECT GOT UNDERWAY. IT SAYS A LOT ABOUT MARGARITA THAT THREE OF THE ROOMS IN THE CHEN CENTER ARE NAMED IN HER HONOR.

DR. JOHN P.N. AUSTIN / HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dedication Ceremony October 25, 2019

“ Our new health and wellness center proudly bears the name of the Chen family – Chairman Chen, father of Jack Chen ’08. We are deeply grateful for your continued generosity. Jack exemplifies Deerfield’s values of loyalty and service, and you uphold Deerfield’s tradition of giving back. Through your generosity and devotion, you join the school’s great benefactors in transforming the Academy and we are honored that the Chen name takes its place alongside others such as Boyden, Hess, Koch, and Greer. Their names and yours are forever part of the Deerfield story and will help link one generation to the next. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the entire Deerfield community, thank you.” — Dedication Ceremony remarks by Brian Simmons P’12,’14, President of the Board

Even prior to naming this Center, the Chen family has had a tremendous impact on Deerfield. Since 2011, approximately 60 faculty members have travelled to China over the summer break, thanks to generous support from the Chens, who believe in the importance of experiential learning. Every traveler returned with renewed perspective and energy as well as a commitment to bring their experiences back to campus to benefit their students.

“ The integration of biophilic design elements can be seen throughout the building. Nature-inspired, custom-designed furniture and materials— including hand-felted wall coverings that mirror the trees outside and geometric wood-inlay artwork created by Deerfield’s own John Downie—reflect the fractal forms found in nature and provide a personalized character to the interior spaces.” — Peter Reiss, Principal / Architectural Resources Cambridge (ARC)
