THIS IS DEFIANCE
DC BASEBALL 2011 This is Defiance College Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, serving approximately 1,100 students. Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement. Defiance’s spirit of service through leadership sets us apart. The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for five consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its 2008 Community Engagement Classification. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2009-10 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Defiance College offers students countless opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips around the globe, all of which open the mind to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, the student newspaper, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better – in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers.
Welcome To Defiance Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan: On behalf of our wonderful Defiance College family, I am honored to welcome you to our campus and to today’s game. Defiance College is very much a college on the move. This year we welcomed the largest number of incoming freshmen in recent memory, up significantly from last year. In fact, 44 percent of our applicants this past year came from outside Ohio, representing 42 states and two territories. They came to Defiance College for many reasons. We are a small college with a real family feel. We offer a wide range of academic majors and intercollegiate and intramural athletic activities. We provide individual attention through our innovative Personal Success Plan (PSP) process in which students work with a team of people at the College to develop their own personalized strategic plans for success in college and beyond. Our wonderful faculty provide a stimulating academic environment as well as serving as personal mentors for students. Our coaches train student-athletes to excel in their sports while also giving them the guidance and support necessary to help them become committed students and community leaders. In fact, we are especially proud of the ways in which our student-athletes continue and further DC’s commitment to community service. Student-athletes serve in many different capacities, from volunteering to assist senior citizens and children, to helping to run, manage, and operate our path-breaking new student-run non-profit, Project 701. This non-profit gives students an opportunity not just to engage in voluntarism, but also to create, develop, run, and supervise a wide range of community-service projects. If you are reading this while you are on campus, you are probably close by the site for construction of our new field house. We are very pleased that all members of our DC community will soon be enjoying this field house, which will include extensive practice and workout facilities for athletes and nonathletes alike. We are particularly pleased that by building this field house, Defiance can help stimulate economic development in our community while providing a premier athletic facility in northwest Ohio. I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know our student-athletes both as members of a team and as individuals. They are an impressive bunch, who bring a wonderful level of excitement and energy to everything they undertake. And they also have tremendous potential. It has been my pleasure to get to know and interact with them on a regular basis. I encourage you to seek opportunities to meet them as well. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today and hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events which we are so proud to host. We hope you enjoy the game. Go Jackets!

IN THE COMMUNITY
DC BASEBALL 2011 Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary, to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement.
Members of all Defiance men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports teams participate in service projects. Many student-athletes at DC have taken leadership roles in service initiatives on campus and in the community, and several have also received scholarships for international projects. Nate White, Ryan McLaughlin, Dan Samuels, Dylan James and Brent James are members of the DC baseball team who are Service Leaders for the current academic year. The Service Leader program rewards previous community service and develops students’ leadership skills. For the fourth-straight year, members of the Yellow Jackets baseball team helped to provide Defiance area residents a safe and convenient way to dispose of household hazardous waste. In the fall, team members and coaches volunteered to join forces with Johns Manville, LaFarge Corporation, Phillips Services Corporation and the Defiance County Environmental Services Office to help dispose of thousands of pounds of hazardous waste materials. Members of the DC baseball team helped to collect and properly dispose of items as they were dropped off, helping to keep potentially harmful materials from doing damage to the environment. This is not out of the ordinary for Defiance College where student-athletes logged more than 2,400 hours of service in their community and around the country during the 2009-10 academic year. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change.

ATHLETICS FACILITIES
Dc ATHLETICs CENTER
CORESSEL STADIUM
DC BASEBALL 2011 Yellow Jacket Baseball utilizes several facilities on the Defiance College campus. Whether the team is competing against an HCAC rival at Craig A. Rutter Field, or eating a pre-game meal at the Serrick Campus Center, Defiance College coaches, administration and staff are devoted to providing the squad with the best facilities possible. Rutter Field sits in the center of the DC athletics complex. The recently constructed press box was finished in 2004 and is equipped with full sound capabilities, which provide the Yellow Jackets and their fans with an energetic pre-game atmosphere. A unique crushed brick infield with all grass baselines and a compacted limestone warning track accent a Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Rye field. All this is complimented by visiting and home dugouts, bullpens and the ‘Green Monster’ in center field. DC recently broke ground on an 84,000 square-foot field house that will open in the fall of 2011. The multi-purpose floor will provide additional training areas for all 21 varsity athletic programs at Defiance, while the McMaster Center weight room and Smart Fitness Center will also be moved to the new facility to provide the campus with a fitness and recreational hub.

Along with the improved win total in 2010, Woodley also led the Jackets to new all-time single-season records for the program in at bats, hits, doubles, innings pitched, putouts, assists and fielding percentage. Woodley has worked hard to lay the foundation for a successful baseball program at Defiance College and has used his avid recruiting skills to consistently add depth and athleticism to the roster, while nearly doubling the squad size since coming to DC. Along with bolstering the roster and making numerous upgrades to DC’s baseball facilities, Woodley has also implemented an active camp schedule for local youth and high school prospects during the summer and winter months. Woodley has 17 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level and most recently served as the assistant coach at Manchester College prior to accepting his current position at DC. SEASON OUTLOOK
DC BASEBALL 2011 DEFIANCE, Ohio - After two years of rebuilding, the Defiance College baseball program took a major step forward in 2010 by logging its highest win total since 1999. The Jackets notched 16 victories one year ago to surpass the combined win total of the previous two seasons. The success came with several new records, as DC set new all-time marks for the program with 1,357 at bats, 400 hits, 76 doubles, 321 innings pitched, 963 putouts, 420 assists and a .958 fielding percentage. The goal entering 2011 for this Defiance squad is to sustain that momentum and see the win total climb for the fourthstraight year under head coach Derek Woodley. With a roster stockpiled with three of Woodley’s recruiting classes, the Yellow Jackets boast plenty of athleticism and depth. DC also now features the personnel needed to thrive with Woodley’s aggressive uptempo offensive approach and fundamental defensive system. ROTATION Despite returning 22 starts to the rotation from one year
kaighin 16
ago, the Yellow Jacket rotation will have a very young feel to it entering the 2011 campaign, with Matt Kaighin being the lone senior in the group. Kaighin will enter his senior season as the staff ace, after taking the hill for a team-leading nine starts last season. The righty also tied for the team lead with three victories on the bump and will look for more consistency in his final collegiate campaign, after posting a 3.38 earned-run average over his first five starts last season. Kaighin will likely be joined in the rotation by a trio of sophomore arms in Jake Taylor, Stephen Leskow and Andy Habecker, after the three proved themselves in various roles at the collegiate ranks during their rookie seasons. Taylor racked up eight starts and was voted as DC’s Rookie of the Year after taking the ball for 40 innings during a promising freshman season. Leskow earned two starts and excelled in the bullpen in 2010, posting a 3.00 ERA in five relief outings. The hard-throwing righty will look to carry that success over into a starting role during his second season with the Purple and Gold. Habecker could also transition into the
taylor
rotation after seeing time in 12 games out of the bullpen as one of DC’s most active hurlers last season. While those four will get the first crack at making the Defiance rotation, several other faces will garner serious consideration, as rising sophomores Ryan McLaughlin and Alex Schomaeker could have an impact, along with a pair of promising freshmen arms in Darin Waterman and Ryan Valentine. One other veteran could work himself into the mix, as Brett Belew carries the highest active innings pitched total on the staff entering his junior season. Belew led the staff with 50 innings pitched and 41 strikeouts as a sophomore and will either anchor the bullpen in a long-relief role, or slide into the rotation where he toed the rubber for three starts one year ago. BULLPEN The aforementioned Belew and Schomaeker will likely open the year as key arms in the Yellow Jacket bullpen, with Belew giving Woodley a proven arm in relief and Schomaeker providing the lone lefty pitcher on the 2011 roster.

That duo should help Defiance bridge the gap between its starters and the back end of the bullpen, where sophomore Aaron Patterson joins juniors Todd Odell and Clint Hoskins for the late-inning assignments. A healthy Odell should build on his three saves from last season as the team’s closer, while Patterson and Hoskins will look to thrive in the setup role, after ranking first and second on the team one year ago by holding opponents to a .273 and .250 batting average respectively. The bullpen will be further bolstered by the arms that do not make the cut for the rotation spots, as well as with rookies Kevin McCann and Justin Mathias. Nate White will also return for his third collegiate campaign, after missing the 2010 season due to injury. CATCHER Competition for playing time will be a theme early in the season for DC and that will also be the case behind the plate, as junior David Riley looks to lead a group of four hoping to replace the departed All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference performer Casey Kahsen. Riley will return for his junior season after miss-

kremer ing 2010 with injury, and is poised to claim the starting job as the squad’s most experienced performer at the position. Sophomore Jonathan Murphy could also see time when not roaming the outfield and newcomers Patrick Masopust and Dylan James will also receive the chance to earn ample playing time. FIRST BASE One of the few positions that appears to be set heading into the 2011 season is first base, where senior Alex Timofeev returns after being selected as an All-HCAC player one year ago. Timofeev started 29 games for Defiance, batting .336 and ranking among the team leaders with 27 runs batted in. Timofeev was named to the HCAC Watch List during the 2011 preseason and will need to build on his breakout 2010 performance in order to fuel the Defiance lineup this season. Timofeev could be spelled by freshman Brooks Strausser, or the versatile Nick Welling. SECOND BASE A new face will likely debut at second base, as newcomer Brad Kremer enters his freshman season as the favorite to replace the graduated four-time
stallkamp All-HCAC Tim Pitro. Kremer will have a pair of returning veterans vying for playing time as well, with senior Dan Samuels and junior Levi Pauli giving the Jackets three capable options to handle the position. SHORTSTOP Junior Bryn Lehman will return to his starting role at shortstop for the Yellow Jackets, after becoming entrenched in the lineup during his first season with DC in 2010. Lehman started 37-of-39 games as a transfer sophomore and led all HCAC defenders, while setting a new Defiance College single-season record with 119 assists in the field. Pauli will back up Lehman at the position, while Waterman will add further depth for DC. THIRD BASE The most wide-open spot on the diamond for Defiance entering 2011 could be at the hot corner, where Welling, Samuels and Pauli will all get a look. Welling appears to be the front runner for the early starts, after being named as an HCAC Player-to-Watch. The rising junior could be poised for a breakout effort after batting .359 in league contests one year ago. A trio of newcomers will also
DC BASEBALL 2011
timofeev see time, with Waterman, Mathias and Sulier creating a loaded crop of third base options for the Jackets. OUTFIELD Despite losing First-Team AllHCAC standout Kirk Jesse, the Jackets will once again feature an outfield loaded with speed and athleticism at all three positions. Zach Stallkamp will headline the group, after pacing DC with a .384 average and earning All-HCAC honors in 2010. Fellow returning starter Brent Kremer will look to build on his .325 average in HCAC action, a healthy Brent James hopes to return to his 2008 form and Murphy will look for an increased role as well. Aaron Helland and Bobby Pardun are both expected to have an impact in their first collegiate seasons, while Zach Lee and Trey Trumpower will add depth. DESIGNATED HITTER The designated hitter slot in the lineup will see many faces this season, as Woodley hopes to use the spot to keep as many hot bats in the lineup as possible. Early candidates for the job include Stallkamp, Welling, Pardun, Mathias and the lefthanded swinging Masopust.

DUGOUT CLUB
DC BASEBALL 2011
In an effort to increase community support and corporate involvement, we have created the Dugout Club. This program provides a viable avenue for our players to interact with members of the community and corporate world. Sponsors receive various incentives depending upon the level of their commitment. Sponsorship could include a mesh outfield fence sign, a full-page or business card sized ad in the Yellow Jacket media guide or a gameday program advertisement. The sponsorship money goes directly toward the cost of the spring training trip in March. A great deal of thanks goes out to our many sponsors!

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY
The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person.
The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship.
32
Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on
the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.
