THIS IS DEFIANCE AND PRESIDENT’S WELCOME this is defiance college

welcome to defiance

Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of nearly 1,100 students.

Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan,

Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement.

We hope that while you are with us today, you will have the opportunity to explore as many parts of Defiance College as possible and that you will share in the excitement about DC continuing to grow around the nation. This year’s entering freshman class is the largest in recent memory. During the past year, we have seen significant increases in applications, with particular increases in applications from outside Ohio, as we become more and more a college with national reach and scope. In fact, this past year, more than half of the students applying to DC came from outside Ohio, representing 48 states and territories.

The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for five-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2010-2011 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization. Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better – in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defiance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

The entire Defiance College family joins me in welcoming you to our campus and to today’s game.

Why are students traveling from all around the United States (and other countries as well) to attend DC? I think it is because Defiance College offers students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered, small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain. As a small college, DC works to help students grow as people, providing individualized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each student. DC provides this in a rural, caring, and supportive setting, thereby enabling students to challenge themselves in new ways and grow as individuals, leaders, and citizens committed to service. At the same time, however, through a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportunities, helping students to develop a distinctive Defiance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. From a broad-based liberal arts education; innovative programs that link what goes on in the classroom with the realities of the outside world and give students distinctive hands-on experience in their relevant fields; international and domestic travel opportunities; exposure to diverse cultural experiences; the use of technologies to bring the world into the classroom in Defiance; and unique service and research opportunities, DC aims to give students the tools they need to become life-long learners and to make distinctive contributions to a changing world. While you are enjoying today’s events on campus, I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know some of our students individually. They are a wonderful group, with incredible potential. I very much enjoy being part of the Defiance College family with them, as they bring excitement, energy, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service – to name just a few of their many attributes. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D” all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host. Go Jackets!

Sincerely, Mark C. Gordon, President

DC ATHLETIC PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement‌to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

JACKETS IN THE COMMUNITY Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary – to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. During the 2010-11 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed more than 2,948 hours of service in their community and around the country. Members of the men’s and women’s soccer teams contributed 590 hours of service. During the past year, the teams volunteered their time and talents by serving as referees for the Paulding youth soccer league and painting dugouts at the DC soccer field. Many student-athletes at DC have taken active roles in leadership and service initiatives campus-wide. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change. Men’s soccer team members Ian Fasnacht, Jack Krienen, Evan Allen, Alec Pribulsky and Gene Snyder are DC Service Leaders. Pribulsky is also a McMaster Scholar to Belize. Defiance College is featured for excellence in blending academics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance is included in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.

COACHING STAFF ASSISTANT COACH Greg Vogt Second Season Defiance College

(419) 783-2445 gvogt@defiance.edu

Greg Vogt begins his second and final year as the primary assistant coach for the men’s soccer program. The Defiance College alum accepted the graduate assistant position, after earning a bachelor’s degree in sport management in the spring of 2010. Vogt displayed his leadership skills on the pitch throughout the 2009 season, as the fourth-year starter and team captain led the Yellow Jackets to their best record since 2006 from his midfield position. The Willowick, Ohio, native was honored as the DC Classic Team MVP after leading the Jackets to a tournament title to start his senior campaign. Vogt went on to finish the season ranked second in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference with six assists, before being tabbed as an All-HCAC performer. Vogt recorded 14 assists in four seasons at Defiance and built a reputation for being a skilled distributor with quick decision making and field awareness. In addition to his responsibilities as a member of the coaching staff, Vogt will spend his final year at DC finishing a master’s degree in education with a concentration in coaching.

2011 SEASON PREVIEW The Yellow Jackets enter year two of Alex Van der Sluijs’ head coaching career with a nice mix of talented freshmen and experienced veterans, after posting a disappointing 5-11-2 record last year. With the attacking system already implemented, Defiance looks to to take a step forward in this upcoming season. Leading the way for the Jackets is a trio of returning players who made a big impact on the pitch last season. These three players are Kevin Elson, Joseph Loftis, and Jaiden Henderson, all of whom were placed on the Preseason Players-to-Watch List by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Association soccer coaches. Elson, a senior and returning starting defender, will be counted on heavily to anchor the Yellow Jackets’ backline. Elson has been a consistent starter dating back to his freshman year, recording 48 career starts for the Jackets. Being one of four seniors on this year’s squad, Elson’s experience and leadership should have a major impact on the young team. Loftis is one of the other four returning seniors and controls the center of the pitch for DC from the midfield position. Last season Loftis was recognized by the conference coaches as a SecondTeam All-HCAC selection. Loftis scored four goals for the Jackets last year and will be looked upon to produce even more during this campaign. Defiance’s leading point and goal scorer is back from an impressive freshman season. Henderson started every game and totaled a team high 14 points. Henderson’s six goals placed him in sixth place for goals in the HCAC. Like Loftis, Henderson was also selected as Second-Team All-HCAC. With a year under his belt, Henderson will be expected to be the offensive catalyst for this season. Another difference maker will be sophomore goalkeeper Sean Roberts, who started 17 games last season and logged over 1,500 minutes. Roberts made 117 saves and recorded two shutouts. The year of experience could prove vital for the young Yellow Jacket squad. Other notable returning starters are sophomore midfielder Evan Allen and sophomore forward Mike Kern. With the Jackets adding 17 newcomers to this year’s team, the returning players will be counted on for leadership and guidance.
