WELCOME TO DEFIANCE Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan:
On behalf of the entire Defiance College community, I am honored to welcome you to our campus and to today’s game. The student-athletes representing Defiance on the softball field are an integral part of a wonderful tradition of scholar athletes going back many decades. In their work on the field, in the classroom, and in the larger community, they embody our focus to know, to understand, to lead, and to serve. We are particularly proud of the ways in which our student-athletes engage in service to the community. From assisting senior citizens to mentoring children, from cleaning up public sites to building and repairing facilities at local campgrounds, our athletic teams have made a real difference both on and off the field. The tremendous potential of all our student-athletes is not just a matter of conjecture. Just look at how successful our athletic alumni have been over the past decades. They have made important contributions in many areas, from education and non-profits to business, government, and much more. We are all proud to walk in their footsteps. We are blessed as well with a real spirit of community and teamwork throughout the College. Not only do our student-athletes learn to practice teamwork on the field, they also witness it on a daily basis, as our coaches, faculty, administrators and staff all work together as a team to help each student-athlete achieve his or her potential. We are dedicated to helping all our students achieve success in the classroom, on the playing field, and in life. I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know on a personal level the student-athletes you are watching today. They are an impressive and diverse group with tremendous energy, a great passion for service, and even greater potential. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers, and staff, for the wonderful work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple & Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well both as individuals and through their organizations. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today and hope that you will return to campus frequently for other sporting events as well as for the numerous cultural and academic events, such as the Schomburg Series of concerts, dramatic productions by DC Players, lecture series, and the pioneering McMaster School Symposium. We hope you enjoy the game. Go Jackets! Sincerely,
Mark C. Gordon, President

THIS IS DEFIANCE COLLEGE
Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, serving approximately 1,100 students. Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement. Defiance’s spirit of service through leadership sets us apart.
The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for five-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years, DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its 2008 Community Engagement Classification. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2009-10 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum, and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Defiance College offers students countless opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips around the globe, all of which open the mind to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, the student newspaper, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers.

ATHLETICS FACILITIES
SAL HENCH FIELD
DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETIC CENTER The Yellow Jackets softball team utilizes several facilities on the Defiance College campus. Whether the team is competing against a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival at Sal Hench Field, or eating a pre-game meal at the Serrick Center, Defiance College coaches, administration and staff are devoted to providing the studentathletes with the best facilities possible. DC recently broke ground on an 84,000 square-foot field house that will open in the fall of 2011. The multi-purpose floor will provide additional training areas for all 21 varsity athletic programs at Defiance, while the McMaster Center weight room and Smart Fitness Center will also be moved to the new facility to provide the campus with a comprehensive fitness and recreational hub.

DC ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY
The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience extracurricular educational and physical activities that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement; to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

JACKETS IN THE COMMUNITY
Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary, to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. Members of all Defiance men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports teams participate in service projects. During the 2009-10 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed more than 2,400 hours of service in their community and around the country. The softball team alone put in more than 400 hours of service during the fall of 2010. Many student-athletes at DC have taken leadership roles in service initiatives campus and community-wide, and several have received scholarships for international projects. Katelyn Samples, Kari Baumgartner, Katie Miller, Aubrie Ridinger, Nicole Diers, Mollee Galloway, and Kaycee Butt are members of the DC softball team who are Service Leaders for the current academic year. The Service Leader program rewards previous community service and develops students’ leadership skills. The DC softball team was recently recognized for its consistent contributions and support for the Special Olympics State Softball Tournament when it received a plaque while volunteering at the tournament on Sept. 18. The team helped out at the tournament by leading participants in various skills stations that focused on hitting, fielding, base running and throwing. In addition, the DC players helped out by escorting groups of participants from station to station, and awarding medals to the athletes to honor their achievements. The team contributed 112 hours of service during the event, adding to the already strong tradition of outstanding community service and involvement from Defiance College student-athletes. In November, the team teamed up with the Northwest Ohio Chapter of the Make-AWish Foundation to plan and host its annual Holiday Party at Springfield High School in Toledo. More than 100 local Wish Kids and their families were in attendance. The team was responsible for providing games at the party, and met for an evening in the Weaner Community Center prior to the event to make, decorate and create games with a Defiance College theme for the participants. On the day of the event, the team showed up early to help setup and decorate, ran the games and craft stations during the party, and helped tear down and cleanup after the event. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change.

SOFTBALL COACHING STAFF HEAD COACH
Sixth Season University of Mount Union (‘01)
HC
JODIE HOLAVA
After just five seasons as the head coach of the Defiance College softball program, Jodie Holava is nearing the most wins in school history with a 124-86 overall record. Holava’s .590 winning percentage is the best by any coach in program history, and the team has been even more impressive under her guidance against conference opponents, boasting a .675 winning percentage. The Yellow Jackets have won three conference championships in five years during Holava’s tenure, and finished among the top-three in the final standings in four out of five seasons. Even during a relatively disappointing 2010 campaign, when the Jackets finished at .500, marking Holava’s only season without a winning record, the team managed to tally five National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Scholar-Athletes, five Academic All-HCAC selections, three HCAC Players of the Week, three All-HCAC performers and one NFCA Second Team All-Region selection. The 2009 season marked the third time in coach Holava’s tenure that the Yellow Jackets qualified for the NCAA Tournament, and the secondstraight season they advanced to the Regional Final Four. Defiance hadn’t made a Final Four appearance in the 25 years prior to her arrival. Holava joined the DC family in 2006, after spending the 2004-2005 season at Notre Dame College of Ohio as an assistant softball coach. With her help, the Falcons finished the season 23-17, marking the best record in school history. They finished 10-4 in the American Mideast Conference and reached the Region IX Tournament for the first time in school history. Prior to her stint at Notre Dame College of Ohio, Holava coached the North Coast Spirit, a traveling softball team sanctioned by the National Softball Association. The Spirit went to the NSA World Series each year with Holava as their coach. Holava earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Mount Union in athletic training, with a minor in health and secondary education. A four-year starter for the Raiders, Holava was a two-time First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference slection and twice named to the All-Central Region First Team.

Amber Jack is in her second season as a member of the softball coaching staff at Defiance College, where she serves as a graduate assistant for the Yellow Jackets while pursuing a master’s degree in education. Jack came to DC after graduating from Barry University, where she attained a bachelor’s degree in english literature and was an outstanding pitcher and first baseman for the Buccaneers. Jack was a three-time All-Sunshine State Conference selection, a three-time all-regional selection and a two-time All-American. She was also voted as the 2008 SSC Pitcher of the Year and the 2008 Barry University Athlete of the Year. AC AARIKA DAVIS ASSISTANT COACH First Season Defiance College (‘10)
After an impressive career on the diamond for DC, Aarika Davis makes the transition from player to coach for the 2011 season. Davis recorded 166-consecutive starts as she established herself as one of the premier players in the HCAC from 2007 through 2010. The Canton, Ohio native is scattered throughout the DC softball record book, ranking first all-time in walks and second all-time in both assists and at bats, while ranking among the top-ten in hits, runs, doubles, triples and homeruns. Davis graduated with a degree in business administration in spring, 2010.
AC KELLY COBLE STUDENT ASSISTANT Third Season Defiance College (‘11)
Kelly Coble is in her third season as an assistant coach for the Yellow Jackets’ softball coaching staff. 2011 SEASON OUTLOOK Defiance brings plenty of experience to the table in 2011, and motivation to boot after finishing outside the top-three in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings last year for the first time since Coach Holava took control of the program in 2006.
PITCHERS: Kelly Schnipke will serve as the pitching staff’s veteran leader in 2011, after posting a team-best seven wins and 3.52 earned run average through 93.2 innings of work last season. The senior slinger is scattered throughout DC’s record books, ranking among the top-seven in career innings pitched (277), wins (22), strikeouts (126) and earned-run average (2.86), and will have plenty of opportunities to supplement those numbers in 2011. Shauna Bowers was impressive in her pitching debut for Defiance last season, holding opposing batters to a teambest .298 batting average. Her breakout sophomore campaign included 81.2 innings and six wins, and concluded with a nine-inning complete-game victory in DC’s season-ending victory over Manchester. Junior pitcher, Lisa Brophy, gives the Jackets another
BOWERS 10
veteran pitcher with collegiate experience under her belt, while freshmen pitchers, Kailea Holbrook, Mollee Galloway and Tiffany Rathwell will get a chance to show what they can do in their first season with the Jackets. CATHERS: Mallory Faling gives the Jackets a seasoned veteran behind the plate, having racked up 124-consecutive starts since her freshman campaign in 2008. She will offer DC’s pitching staff a sense of security, while doing just the opposite for opposing pitchers with her exceptional eye and feel for the strike zone. Faling drew a conference-high 29 walks last season, and will need just eight more this year to become DC’s all-time leader for walks in a career. When her patient approach tempts an opposing pitcher into throwing one down the middle, Faling will not hesitate to swing away. The senior slugger currently sits sixth in program history with 70 RBI, and ranks second in the record books with 12 homeruns in her career. Should Faling miss a game for the first time in her career, veteran catcher, Nicole Diers, will be ready to fill in, while freshman catcher, Hallie Sullivan, will look to chip in as well.
FALING
WWW.DEFIANCEATHLETICS.COM
2011 SEASON OUTLOOK FIRST BASE: Kaycee Butt took over at first base last season, and gave the Jackets another run-producing bat in the middle of the lineup. She ended with a .250 batting average and 23 hits, while placing fourth on the team with 22 runs batted in. She handled her defensive duties effectively as well, picking up a team-high 226 putouts to go along with 12 assists and a .979 fielding percentage. Becky Petrie gives the Jackets another experienced option at first base, having racked up 29 games and 11 starts in her career. MIDDLE INFIELD: Tasha Stucke and Katie Miller will be in their second season defending the middle infield together. Stucke has been a stalwart at shortstop since earnining the starting job as a sophomore, and claimed her first-career appearance on the First-Team All-HCAC squad last season, after recording 43 hits, 29 runs and a .358 batting average along with 89 putouts, 80 assists. Katie Miller was the only freshman to claim a starting gig with the Jackets last season, and proved her worth by placing third on the team in both hits (26) and runs batted in (23). The Archbold High School product showed a flare for the dramatic, posting a .714 batting average with the bases
STUCKE
loaded, as she connected on fiveof-seven opportunities. Freshmen, Maggie Neanen and Macy Ferrall, will serve as the primary backups at both positions, with Mallory Faling serving as the emergency backup at second. THIRD BASE: Third base is the biggest question mark for Defiance entering the 2011 season, after losing Aarika Davis to graduation last spring. Defiance High School product and Most Valuable Defensive Player, Stephanie Equibel, will get the first crack at securing the position, while classmate, Anna Vasquez, will push her for playing time. Coach Holava can also call on the services of veterans Elizabeth Petrie and Ashley Switzer. OUTFIELD: 2010 First Team-All HCAC and NFCA Second Team All-Regional outfielder, Marah Robinson, will roam center field for DC, while a platoon consisting of Katelyn Samples, Aubrie Ridinger and Elizabeth Huffman will rotate in the corners. Robinson is a potential HCAC Player of the Year candidate, after placing second in the HCAC in both batting average (.418) and on-base percentage (.515) last season, while leading the Jackets with 52 hits and 28 RBI. Freshmen outfielders, Kari Baumgartner and Tisha Parrish, will also look to get in the mix for Defiance.
