THIS IS DEFIANCE
DC VOLLEYBALL 2011 This is Defiance College
Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of nearly 1,100 students. Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement. The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for five-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2010-2011 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization. Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement.
Jackets in the Community
Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary – to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. During the 2010-11 academic year, Defiance College studentathletes contributed more than 2,948 hours of service in their community and around the country. The Yellow Jacket volleyball team contributed 120 service hours during the past year. The volleyball team’s most recent project was to assist with a Special Olympics Softball Skills Evaluation event in Bryan, Ohio. Team members led the softball skills testing session of 25 Special Olympic athletes. They helped by encouraging the athletes as they were tested in batting, throwing, and base running skills. The team also assisted with handing out awards at the end of the event. Many student-athletes at DC have taken active roles in leadership and service initiatives campus-wide. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change. Volleyball team members Lindsay McDaniel, Caroline Hesterman, Chelsea Ludeman, Logan Manders, Gretel Briand and Alicia Kalik are DC Service Leaders. Defiance College is featured for excellence in blending academics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance is included in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.
Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better – in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defiance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

Head Coach • Ninth Season • York University, 1999 419-783-2326 • DKWAN@DEFIANCE.EDU
The 2011 campaign will be the ninth for David Kwan at the helm of the Defiance College volleyball program. During his tenure with the Yellow Jackets, Kwan has piled up a career record of 136-114 and has guided Defiance to a 38-26 mark in league play. Kwan has coached 21 All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference student-athletes during his stint with DC, en route to piling up four 20-win seasons. Kwan was named the 2003 HCAC Coach of the Year, after leading the Jackets to a school-record 26 victories during his first season with the program. The Jackets finished the 2010 season with a 14-17 record including a 3-6 mark in league action. The program featured two All-HCAC performers, Marlea Rolander and HCAC Freshman of the Year, Chelsea Ludeman. Ludeman was the second Yellow Jacket in three years to be honored with the distinction. The team enjoyed success off the court, as four Yellow Jackets were named to the All-HCAC Academic Team. The volleyball squad earned the highest spring grade-point-average of all Defiance sports with a combined 3.64 GPA. The list included 10 boasting grade-point averages of at least 3.70 and four with a perfect 4.00. It was the highest team total in Kwan’s tenure as coach. Kwan came to Defiance from Toronto, Ontario, where he served as assistant men’s volleyball coach at Humber College. During the 2002-2003 season, Kwan helped lead the Hawks to the school’s first undefeated regular season and a top-four finish in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Championship. Prior to Humber College, Kwan was an assistant women’s volleyball coach at York University, where he also instructed physical education courses and helped develop some of the top volleyball athletes in the province of Ontario, placing four athletes on the All-Canadian All-Stars. Kwan began his coaching career by volunteering as the head coach of the boys’ volleyball team of Toronto West Volleyball Club from 1997-2002 and as head coach of the Elite Summer Regional Team of Ontario from 1998-2001, earning bronze in 2000 and gold in 2001. He has worked camps for the University of Michigan, Bowling Green State University, Premier Elite and numerous local high schools in and around the region. SEASON OUTLOOK
DC VOLLEYBALL 2011 DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College volleyball team heads into the 2011 season looking to reassert itself as an upper-tier team in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets are coming off of a 14-17 season that included a 3-6 mark in the HCAC. A talented core of returning players will lead the Yellow Jackets into the new campaign. Head Coach David Kwan will once again lead Defiance in the upcoming season. Kwan is entering his ninth season and has guided the squad to a 136114 overall record and a 38-26 clip in league play. The 2011 squad brings back two All-HCAC selections in senior Marlea Rolander and sophomore Chelsea Ludeman, who was the second DC player in three years to be named HCAC Freshman of the Year. A strong contingent of returning players will be expected to lead the Yellow Jackets in the upcoming season. Rolander and Ludeman, along with seniors Jessica Tietje and Meghan Hinds will be called upon to carry the load, after being named to the HCAC Watch List. Rolander, a middle blocker, has established herself as one of the most dominant players in the conference. The prod-

uct of Napoleon High led the league in total blocks (127) a season ago. She also ranked among the best in the conference with 270 kills and a .310 hitting percentage. Ludeman enters her second season after a stellar freshman campaign. In 2010, Ludeman, a right side hitter, ranked sixth in the HCAC with 323 kills. A threat on the defensive end as well, she posted 86 total blocks. Also a product of Napoleon High, Ludeman combined with Rolander to account for nearly half of the team’s kills and blocks. Tietje returns to the squad after an injury-shortened 2010 season. The senior middle blocker from Patrick Henry High will play an important part in returning DC to the upper echelon of the conference. Despite only playing in 13 matches, Tietje posted a total of 73 kills at a .227 hitting percentage. She also totaled 43 blocks at a rate of .88 per set, which ranked second on the DC team. Hinds, an outside hitter from Portland High (MI), returns after a solid debut season for the Yellow Jackets. In 2010, she set marks of 87 kills, 41 aces and 27 total blocks. Also coming back to aid the attack is sophomore outside hitter Christa Seidenstricker, senior middle blocker Mi-

chelle Sikora and sophomore outside hitter Gretel Briand. Seidenstricker tied for third on the squad in 2010 with 87 kills. She is also a threat defensively, as she chalked up 59 total blocks a year ago. Sikora returns after not playing in 2010. In 2009, she had 125 kills in 115 sets for the Yellow Jackets. Briand played in five matches and provided one kill and two digs. Junior liberos and defensive specialists Lindsay McDaniel and Kate Borer return to bolster the Yellow Jacket back line. McDaniel played in 35 sets last season and tallied 31 digs, while Borer saw action in 11 sets and chipped in seven digs. Sophomore Alexis Pierce joins the team after playing basketball for DC last season. A talented freshman class also joins the fray and will be expected to give the Jackets a boost. New additions to the program include Ashley Czuk, Jillian Forbear-Turner, Caroline Hesterman, Alicia Kalik, Heather Kame, Logan Manders, Alyssa Turton and Stephanie Wilson. The veteran core of players, bolstered by the new recruiting class, looks set to return to the HCAC Tournament and make a run at the coveted conference title.

Defiance College Intercollegiate Athletic Philosophy The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extracurricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement‌to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.
