THIS IS DEFIANCE AND PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of nearly 1,100 students. Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educating citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement. The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for five-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2010-2011 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization. Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in worldclass cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better – in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defiance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan, The entire Defiance College family joins me in welcoming you to our campus and to today’s game. We hope that while you are with us today, you will have the opportunity to explore as many parts of Defiance College as possible and that you will share in the excitement about DC continuing to grow around the nation. This year’s entering freshman class is the largest in recent memory. During the past year, we have seen significant increases in applications, with particular increases in applications from outside Ohio, as we become more and more a college with national reach and scope. In fact, this past year, more than half of the students applying to DC came from outside Ohio, representing 48 states and territories. Why are students traveling from all around the United States (and other countries as well) to attend DC? I think it is because Defiance College offers students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered, small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain. As a small college, DC works to help students grow as people, providing individualized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each student. DC provides this in a rural, caring, and supportive setting, thereby enabling students to challenge themselves in new ways and grow as individuals, leaders, and citizens committed to service. At the same time, however, through a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportunities, helping students to develop a distinctive Defiance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. From a broad-based liberal arts education; innovative programs that link what goes on in the classroom with the realities of the outside world and give students distinctive hands-on experience in their relevant fields; international and domestic travel opportunities; exposure to diverse cultural experiences; the use of technologies to bring the world into the classroom in Defiance; and unique service and research opportunities, DC aims to give students the tools they need to become life-long learners and to make distinctive contributions to a changing world. While you are enjoying today’s events on campus, I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know some of our students individually. They are a wonderful group, with incredible potential. I very much enjoy being part of the Defiance College family with them, as they bring excitement, energy, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service – to name just a few of their many attributes. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D” all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host. Go Jackets!

DC ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement‌to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

JACKETS IN THE COMMUNITY Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary – to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. During the 2010-11 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed more than 2,948 hours of service in their community and around the country. Members of the men’s and women’s soccer teams contributed 590 hours of service. During the past year, the teams volunteered their time and talents by serving as referees for the Paulding youth soccer league and painting dugouts at the DC soccer field. Many student-athletes at DC have taken active roles in leadership and service initiatives campus-wide. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change. Women’s soccer players Genelle Castro, Alicia Ledford and Abby Taylor are DC Service Leaders. Defiance College is featured for excellence in blending academics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance is included in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.

2011 PREVIEW The Lady Jackets are entering year two under the guidance of head coach Alex Van der Sluijs, who is in the process of constructing a squad and program that fits his attacking mindset. The Yellow Jackets finished the 2010 campaign with a disappointing 4-9-4 record but look to improve on that mark this season. An influx of talented freshmen coupled with a number of key experienced returning players should produce better results on the pitch this year. Goalkeepers: After spending last season under the tutelage of senior goalkeeper Kelly Coble, sophomore Aileen Clouse looks to takeover as the starter in 2011. Coble left big shoes to fill as she played every minute in goal for the Yellow Jackets last season and received Second-Team All Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honors. Clouse looks to use the knowledge she gained last year and take it to the pitch for a successful season. Defenders: 2011 HCAC Players-to-Watch, Jordanne Buehrer and Katie Heitkamp, headline a group of veteran defenders that will anchor the DC backline. Returning defenders joining Buehrer and Heitkamp are veterans Alexandra Johnson and Kim Bingley, both of whom started the majority of last season. Incoming freshmen looking to make an impact on defense are Samantha Klauss, Chelsie Moyer and Jourdan Niemiec. With all of the experience returning, the defense will be the backbone of Van der Sluijs’s attacking system. Midfielders: The young group of midfielders will be led by sophomore Bibiana Parra, who played in twelve games as a freshman and started four. Parra will look to have an expanded role this season with all of the new faces at the midfielder position. The year of experience she brings to the table could play a vital role in getting all the freshmen up to speed. The players joining Parra will be Staci Simpson, Morgan Redick, Maegan Redick, Stephanie Coble, Abby Taylor, Katie Stephens and Lindsay Bubnick. Forwards: Following a breakout freshman campaign, Karly Smith looks to lead the Jackets attack again this year. Smith started all 17 games in 2010 and is the leading returning goal and point scorer from last season with four and 10 respectively. Other returning starters at the forward position are Dani Chadwick, Katie Myers, and Hailey Trubey. Chadwick will be a key, as she can play multiple positions all over the pitch giving Van der Sluijs many different options. The incoming freshmen forwards are Melina Alexander, Genelle Castro, Alicia Ledford, Kenzie Chalfant and Cayla Inkrott.
