2013 YELLOW JACKETS FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE
Welcome From the President
G
Dear Fellow DC Fan:
40
I hope you notice some of the recent improvements to our athletic facilities. Our George M. Smart Athletic Center (“the George”) began operation in February 2012, and we are thrilled with the opportunities our students have to use this 84,000 square foot facility, with its 200-meter indoor track, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, batting cages, fitness center, weight room, and much more. The new turf on our football/lacrosse field was installed in December, 2012, and we also recently renovated our outdoor E. Stevens Dix Tennis Courts. The new bleachers and improved flooring in our Weaner Center has also enhanced the experience for our fans, and more improvements are underway across campus this year as well.
DC students also get unique opportunities to travel both domestically and internationally. Under our DC Global Program, we actually guarantee an international opportunity in the junior or senior year to students in good standing who successfully complete our full four-year program. Over the past two years, DC students have traveled to Cambodia, Belize, Tanzania, Ghana, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, London, Paris, Vienna, Prague, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. Similarly, on a domestic level, DC students have traveled to New York City, Washington, D.C., Portland (OR), Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Kansas City, Des Moines, Denver, Selma, Memphis, Chicago, Nashville, Florida, South Carolina, New Mexico, and elsewhere. We are very proud of the opportunities we give our students to open their eyes, raise their sights, open their minds, and, in many cases, open their hearts as well.
30
We are all particularly proud of the great work that our students have done in running Project 701, a unique student-run, separately-legally-incorporated non-profit, in which DC students create, develop, run and manage service projects. From working with the two hospitals in town to run a free primary-care clinic to micro-finance lending; from providing computer repair services to packing backpacks full of food for needy elementary school students to take home on weekends, our DC students are gaining the tools to become entrepreneurial life-long learners, while also helping to address important local, regional, national, and international issues. In fact, Defiance College was recently named one of the top 20 schools in the country in terms of community service and engagement.
DC students also participate in a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities that give students distinctive hands-on experiences in their relevant fields. Just to name a few examples, we are proud of the work that our Criminal Justice students do in investigating cold cases for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit; our Education students get hands-on experience working in classrooms as early as their freshman year; Science students run and manage a 200+ acre wildlife preserve; through our Business Advantage Program, business, marketing, finance, sales, accounting and other students get hands-on experiences creating and running actual businesses. I could go on and on in terms of the different opportunities for our Communications, Sport Management, Pre-Med, Social Work, Graphic Design, and students in many other areas.
What does this mean? It means that our students start working with us before they even start their classes to put together distinctive Personal Success Plans, so that we can work with them to tailor their DC education and experiences to their own individual interests and goals. Throughout their four years at Defiance, our students benefit from a broad range of activities and experiences that are structured both to help them achieve their individual dreams and also to enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. As part of that approach, we work with our students to help them develop their own Defiance College Resume.
10
Students at DC receive a wide range of distinctive experiences as we strive to offer our students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond.
20
We at Defiance College are extremely proud of our wonderful athletic program and of the many other activities taking place at DC. The students whom you are watching today are an important part of our larger DC family, and they are among the approximately 1000 DC students who benefit from the dedication and assistance provided by our wonderful faculty, alumni, staff, administrators, and friends.
It is a real pleasure to welcome you to our campus and to today’s game.
I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers, and staff for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go above and beyond on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host.

Defiance Athletics Philosophy
The Defiance College intercollegiate athletic program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person.
|4 0
The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship.
Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders.
|5 0
The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletic program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletic program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values.
The Defiance College intercollegiate athletic program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement‌to know-to lead-to serve and to understand.

The Purple and Gold Club Inc. was founded in the early 1970's by Defiance community members who wanted to do something extra for all the student-athletes at Defiance College. Since its inception, the club has continually grown and has exceeded 225 members. The club serves to provide both financial assistance and personal support for the entire athletics department. For over 35 years, the supporters of the Purple and Gold Club have made Defiance College a better experience for all of the student-athletes.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY
The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person.
|5 0
Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal
16
growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid, or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

One of the main questions for the team coming into the season will be depth behind the returners. The 2013 signing class consisted of 68 freshman new comers that fill out 60 percent of the 115-man roster. The Purple and Gold return 16 seniors and 12 juniors, most of which will occupy starting or key backup positions. Despite the 2-8 season in 2012, the Yellow Jackets return a lot of positives from last season, including the second best total defense in the conference. The Defiance defense gave up 325.6 yards per game, only 14.4 yards behind conference leader and champion Franklin. The Yellow Jackets finished second in both pass and rush defense for the season. The Purple and Gold also return the second leading rush offense in the conference after averaging 184.1 yards per game on the ground. QUARTERBACK One of the top returning areas for the Yellow Jackets in 2013 will be the quarterback position. Defiance returns a 450-yard rushing and nearly 1,500-yard passing senior in Garrett Teague. The Webberville, Mich. native started all 10 games for the Yellow Jackets last season for coach Sheehan’s Pistol Option style offensive system.
The running back position will also return junior Todd Roberts. The Miami, Fla. native played in six games for the Yellow Jackets last season. Like many positions for the Yellow Jackets, the running backs slot will also feature several freshmen that will compete for time.
Teague Teague’s 1,467 yards passing last season was the most for the Yellow Jackets since 2007. His passing completions (119) and touchdown passes (12) are also the second most since 2007.
SLOT BACKS Sheehan’s offense also features the slot back position, which complements the power and size of the running backs with agility and speed.
Burrell
WIDE RECEIVERS In contrast to the youth at the tight end slots, the Jackets will feature seniors Brian Mircovich, Bryan Weaver, and Mo Garces at the wide receiver position. Mircovich and Weaver have each proven to be performers in the DC offense, but will need to replace the six touchdown receptions and 552 yards reeled in last season by Jon Carrabino.
Behind Teague will be sophomore Sean Washington, as well as several freshmen, including Alex Larson and Mark Boggs. RUNNING BACKS Defiance will bring back its leading rusher in 2013 as well. Trevon Burrell, who rushed for a team leading 516 yards and three touchdowns in 2012, will look to be a feature back for Sheehan coming into his junior season. The Auburn Hills, Mich. native averaged 5.3 yards per carry on 97 attempts during the season.
Smith
Chester Senior Joey Chester, who returns as the third leading rusher for the Yellow Jackets behind Burrell and Teague, has played in 27 games for the Purple and Gold. Chester averaged 4.3 yards per carry for 268 yards last season. Behind Chester in the slot will be a host of freshmen that will compete for playing time. TIGHT ENDS A young Defiance lineup will be the least experienced at the tight end position, where junior Calab Wagner and freshman Tom Woehnker will be asked to step in a play for Sheehan’s offensive unit. Wagner, a native of LaGrange, Ohio, moves over from the defensive side of the ball in 2012 and Woehnker comes in from East Noble high school out of Indiana.
DEFIANCE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKETS FOOTBALL
Mircovich Mircovich, led the team last season in receptions with 33, and reeled in 357 yards and three touchdowns. Weaver brought in seven receptions in 2012, totaling 83 yards and one touchdown.

Sierra will be joined by several Yellow Jackets who have experience from last season. Sophomores Leroy Cheatham and Jorry Matherson both played in all 10 games last season as freshmen and combined for 32.5 tackles and 12 breakups. Matherson had an interception
Sierra, a Warren, Mich. native, played in all 30 games in his career going into last season and totaled 123 tackles, with 11 coming for a loss and two forced fumbles. He has nine interceptions for his career, including two returned for touchdowns.
DEFENSIVE LINE The defensive line for the Yellow Jackets returns senior defensive end Andrew Leverenz, who was a first team All-HCAC selection and third team All-Ohio selection last year. Leverenz led the team in tackles for a loss (21) and sacks (10.5) in 2012 and will be relied upon heavily with a younger group lining up alongside him on the defensive front.
Sierra
Spence averaged 37.3 yards per punt over 54 attempts last season. Spence has a career long punt of 67 yards and has punted for 2600 yards in 72 attempts. Spence also has 62 rushing attempts for 287 yards over three seasons while also bringing in two receptions. The senior has also completed 25 of 49 passing attempts for 253 yards.
Seniors Mitch Smith and Adam Hall, Junior Tanner Engle, and Sophomores Lance Vetter and Joe Niehaus will be on the offensive line for Defiance, combining for 39 starts last season. Cameron McCalla will lead several freshmen who will be expected to back up and fill playing time roles for Sheehan.

LINEBACKERS The linebacker group for the Yellow Jackets may be the most inexperienced group on the defensive side of the ball coming into the 2013 season. However, the group does return senior Blaine McGowan, who started all 10 games in 2013 and was second on the team with 47 tackles and nine tackles for a loss. He also had three sacks and a fumble recovery. For his career, McGowan has 107.5 tackles, with 15 coming for a loss. The South Haven, Mich. native has 3.5 career sacks, along with two fumble recoveries and an interception.
SPECIAL TEAMS A pair of familiar names will anchor the kicking game, with senior Aaron Spence handling the punting duties and junior Spencer Saunders repeating his role by handling kickoffs, pointafter attempts and field goal tries. Saunders connected on 21-of-23 point-after tries in 2012 and split the uprights in four of his seven field goal attempts. For his career, Saunders is 40-of45 on point-after tries and has seven field goals.
20
Kyle Wilson, Seth Evans, and Rayon Calloway also had some playing time in 2012 and return for the Yellow Jackets. The trio combined for 18.5 tackles in 26 games played last season.
Junior Josh Slayton returns for his third season with the Purple and Gold. The Fort Wayne, Ind. native has played in 17 games, totaling 73 tackles with two for a loss and 10 pass deflections.
30
Leverenz
DEFENSIVE BACKS Three-time First-Team AllHCAC selection, Tony Sierra, will highlight an experienced secondary for Defiance in 2013. Sierra returns after missing last season due to an injury. He was granted a medical hardship waiver to come back this season.
and both had a fumble recovery. Andrew Feldhaus also played in seven games as a freshman last year and had 11.5 tackles with a sack and an interception.
40
In the group with McGowan is only one returning player with playing time in Isaac Jeffers. The senior has appeared in six games over the last two seasons with two assisted tackles. Freshmen Devin Thomas (Toledo, Ohio), Keandre Gilmer (Toledo, Ohio), and Matt DeVore (Van Buren, Ohio) should compete for a lot of playing time.
50
OFFENSIVE LINE In order for Defiance’s offense to perform more efficiently in 2013, it will need steady production from the offensive line throughout the season. Defiance will return five offensive linemen with starts and playing time, who should contribute to one of the more experienced areas on the field for the Yellow Jackets.

Jeff Judge enters his second season as the Defensive Coordinator for the Yellow Jackets in 2013. Judge came to Defiance after spending the previous nine seasons as the head coach at fellow Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe, Anderson University, and boasts 30 years of experience on the sidelines at the collegiate level. Prior to his head coaching stint with AU, Judge held coordinator positions for each of the previous 13 seasons during stops at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Simpson College and Morehead State University. Judge held both the offensive and defensive coordinator tags during his three years at UW-Stevens Point, after leading the defensive unit for six years at Simpson. Judge’s first coordinator opportunity came with Morehead State, where he ran the offense and was the recruiting coordinator over a four-year span. The Gilbert, Iowa, native got his start in the coaching ranks during five years as a student assistant at Iowa State University, where he completed a degree in physical education in 1987 with endorsements in coaching and secondary teaching. Judge then worked as a graduate assistant coach for two seasons at Purdue University, while earning a master’s degree in sports administration in 1989. Craig McCord is in his tenth season at Defiance and will handle the tags of the offensive line and head JV coach. McCord came to Ayersville High in 1974 and started the football program from scratch. In 30 years he turned the Pilots into 12-time league champions, notched five undefeated regular seasons, made eight appearances in the state playoffs and earned a runner-up finish in the state in 1986. During his 35-year career as a high school coach, McCord tutored 231 all-conference players, 39 All-Ohio players and two Ohio Offensive Backs of the Year. He also saw 18 of his prep standouts move on to play in the collegiate ranks. McCord was inducted into the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in April of 2006 and added another prestigious accolade in the fall of 2011, when Ayersville High dedicated its football field in honor of its inaugural coach. The list of accomplishments does not stop there however, as McCord was also honored as a Jennings Foundation Scholar three times and received the 200-Victory Award from the OHSFCA. McCord was named The Crescent-News Coach of the Year three times, coached the Defiance Seven County All-Star Game and co-coached the Northwest Ohio Regional All-Star Game. Dan Cornely enters his fourth season for the Purple and Gold in 2013 and second year as a full-time member of the Yellow Jackets coaching staff. In 2012, Cornely moved to full-time duties, coaching the defensive line. This season, Cornely adds special teams coordinator duties as well as the strength and conditioning program to his list. Cornely is no stranger to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, as he was a three-year starter and three-time All-HCAC selection on the gridiron for Hanover College. During his time with the Panthers, Cornely earned the Coaches’ Appreciation Award and was a two-year captain from his linebacker position. Cornely began his coaching career at Florida International University, where he assisted the defensive coordinator during summer camps. The 2013 campaign is the second for Bryan Driskell with the Purple and Gold as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. Driskell has been a key part of the recruiting efforts in Coach Sheehan’s 70+ signees this past offseason. Driskell brought five years of coaching experience with him to DC, after holding similar positions at NCAA Division III programs for four of those seasons. In that time, Driskell was on staff with four conference champions and one national championship team. Driskell’s last coaching stop before joining the DC was a two-year tenure at Christopher Newport University as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. While at CNU, Driskell designed and implemented the pass offense scheme for each game and saw the Captains set program records in wins, scoring offense, passing offense, total offense, passing touchdowns and completions, en route to winning the USA South Conference Championship. Driskell held the same position at Duquesne University before CNU. In his single season with DU, the Dukes claimed the NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major National Championship, while setting school records in passing yards and completions. He also has stops at Muhlenberg College and Wittenberg University, winning conference crowns at each institution. At Muhlenberg, Driskell saw the Mules set program records for wins and points in a single season and advance into the NCAA Division III Playoffs for the first time in school history. The Lima, Ohio, native spent time at the quarterback and wide receiver positions during his collegiate playing career, starting at Methodist University, before playing his final three seasons at Salisbury University. Driskell went on to earn a degree in history from Salisbury in 2002 and has continued working towards a master’s degree in Christian studies at Denver Seminary since 2008. Driskell and his wife, Angela, reside in Defiance.
