Defiance Athletics Philosophy The Defiance College intercollegiate athletic program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletic program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletic program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletic program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement‌to know-to lead-to serve and to understand.

Defiance College Yellow Jackets

Season Outlook

Defiance College is coming off of their first winning season since 2004 and their first conference winning season since 2005. The Yellow Jackets are looking for their first back-to-back winning seasons, overall or conference, since joining the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. They are coming off their best season since 2004 where they went 8-5-5. Defiance looks like they are in good shape to have another strong season as they return nine players that saw at least eight starts. Of those nine players, four started in all 19 games. Senior forward Karly Smith will be looking to have another big season for the Yellow Jackets. The Par-ma, Ohio native is coming off a season where she scored seven goals and was named to All-HCAC first team. So far in her career, Smith has put in 11 goals and dished out 6 assists for a total of 28 points. Another senior looking to have a big year is midfielder Bibiana Parra. Parra, out of Indianapolis, Ind., started in all 19 games last year for the Yellow Jackets. Parra, for her defensive efforts, was named onto the All-HCAC Second Team. She played a very important role on the defense last year and looks to be a big con-tributor again this season. Kim Bingley rounds out the senior class. From Ottawa, Ohio, Bingley will be another important piece of the defense. She played in 16 games last season, missing three games due to a knee injury. Bingley is a natural athlete who also participates on the basketball and track and field teams. Junior Chelsie Moyer will be another important part of the defense this year. Out of Tipp City, Ohio, Moyer played and started in all 19 games. She saw 1,814 minutes of playing time last year, only behind departing player Katie Heitkamp. Lindsay Bubnick, another junior, looks to again contribute on the offensive side of the field. Second only to Smith, the Vandalia, Ohio native scored five goals last season. She also had three assists. Bubnick likes to try and score for the Yellow Jackets, firing 24 shots on goal last year. She was named to the All-HCAC Second Team. Finally, goalkeeper sophomore Claire Turner, out of Medina, Ohio, returns to the goal box this year for Defiance College. Turner started all 19 games last year as a freshman. With 108 saves and seven shutout victo-ries, she looks to again come up big in her sophomore campaign. The coaches in the HCAC have picked the Yellow Jackets to finish fifth, which is the same spot they ended last season. The top four teams with the best conference record play in the HCAC tournament at the end of the season. The Yellow Jackets look to surpass the conference coaches’ expectations and finish inside the top four to qualify for the postseason tournament.
