Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its 2008 Community Engagement Classification.

During the 2009-2010 academic year, Defiance College studentathletes contributed more than 2,400 hours of service in their community and around the country.

The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2009-10 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization; and study abroad programs.

Many student-athletes at DC have taken active roles in leadership and service initiatives campus-wide. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change.

Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, the student newspaper, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity.

The volleyball team’s most recent project was to assist with Special Olympics Softball competition in nearby Archbold, Ohio. In past years, the team has assisted the City of Defiance with painting and clean-up at Kids’ Creation community playground and worked with a number of agencies and organizations including the Family Justice Center and the Defiance City Schools.

Volleyball team members Heather Bradshaw, Lindsay McDaniel, Stacey Truskowski and Chelsea Ludeman are DC Service Leaders. Julie Brunsman is a McMaster Scholar to Cambodia. Defiance College is featured for excellence in blending academics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance is included in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.

KWAN

Head Coach • Eighth Season • York University, 1999 419-783-2326• DKWAN@DEFIANCE.EDU The 2010 campaign will be the eighth for David Kwan at the helm of the Defiance College volleyball program. During his tenure with the Yellow Jackets, Kwan has piled up a career record of 122-97 and has guided Defiance to a 35-20 mark in league play. Kwan has coached 19 All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference student-athletes during his stint with DC, en route to piling up four 20-win seasons. Kwan was named the 2003 HCAC Coach of the Year, after leading the Jackets to a school-record 26 victories during his first season with the program. The Jackets posted their fifth winning season of Kwan’s tenure in 2009 with a 22-11 campaign. The 22 victories marked a seven-win improvement from 2008 and gave DC two-straight winning seasons and its highest win total since 2003. Defiance’s 4-4 record in HCAC action gave the program is fifth finish among the top four teams in the HCAC standings in the past seven seasons. The 2009 season was equally as successful off the court, as the Jackets placed second among all conference volleyball teams by having four student-athletes earn a spot on the HCAC All-Academic Team, after leading the league with five awards in 2008. Kwan came to Defiance from Toronto, Ontario, where he served as assistant men’s volleyball coach at Humber College. During the 20022003 season, Kwan helped lead the Hawks to the school’s first undefeated regular season and a top-four finish in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Championship. Prior to Humber College, Kwan was an assistant women’s volleyball coach at York University, where he also instructed physical education courses and helped develop some of the top volleyball athletes in the province of Ontario, placing four athletes on the All-Canadian All-Stars. Kwan began his coaching career by volunteering as the head coach of the boys’ volleyball team of Toronto West Volleyball Club from 19972002 and as head coach of the Elite Summer Regional Team of Ontario from 1998-2001, earning bronze in 2000 and gold in 2001. He was also a personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach at the Sports Clubs of Canada-Plaza Club. Kwan has also coached both the 15 and 16-year-old national travel teams for Premier Volleyball for the last five years, having recently qualified the 16-1 team for the Junior Olympics National Tournament in Atlanta. He has worked camps for the University of Michigan, Bowling Green State University, Premier Elite and numerous local high schools in and around the region. Kwan earned an honors bachelor of arts degree in kinesiology and health sciences from York University in 1999 and a master of kinesiology in coaching degree from York in 2001.

Assistant Coach • Second Season • Cornell College, 2002 419-576-2097 • LMESNER@DEFIANCE.EDU Lindsey Mesner is in her second season as the assistant coach for the Defiance College volleyball program. She came to DC from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after serving as the assistant volleyball coach for Kirkwood Community College. Prior to her experience at KCC, Mesner was an assistant volleyball coach at Waldorf College, where she also taught wellness courses. Mesner has also gained valuable coaching experience at the high school and club levels, most recently acting as the head coach for the Prairie Volleyball Club’s 17 and under squad. Mesner is a 2002 graduate of Cornell College, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education. During her time at Cornell, Mesner was a four-year letterwinner in both volleyball and basketball, earning captain’s honors for both and being named as the volleyball team’s most valuable player in 2002. Along with serving on the Yellow Jacket coaching staff, Mesner is working towards a master’s degree from Defiance College.

SEASON OUTLOOK

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College volleyball program re-established itself as a top threat in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 22-11 overall record in 2009 and a trip to the HCAC Tournament Semifinals. The 22 victories were DC’s highest win total since 2003 and marked its second-straight winning season. It was also the fourth 20-win season for head coach David Kwan during his seven years with Defiance. With the program on the right track, the next step is to lean on an experience-laded roster in 2010 to contend for the HCAC Championship. The Jackets will look to their four seniors to lead a group of 10 returning letterwinners and eight new faces. While the focused and driven group of veteran upperclassmen will fill the majority of the positions in the lineup, an exciting incoming class flush with powerful offensive hitters should give the Jackets a major boost. With those weapons in place, the 2010 Yellow Jackets will have all of the tools they need to make another run at the coveted HCAC Championship. SETTERS Julie Brunsman and Kelsey Ferguson will return for their senior seasons to serve as the pillars of the Yellow Jacket offensive attack throughout the 2010 campaign. The unselfish duo

split time in DC’s two-setter offensive system in 2009 and combined to toss up 8.7 assists per set, while accounting for 92.5 percent of the team’s assists. Along with setting up the big hitters for the Jackets, Brunsman and Ferguson can provide some firepower of their own, with Brunsman leading the squad with 30 service aces and Ferguson following up with 29 aces and a team-best .417 hitting percentage last season.

MIDDLE BLOCKERS A pair of juniors will bolster DC’s presence at the net, as Marlea Rolander and Jessica Tietje will each play vital roles for the Jackets in 2010. Rolander earned All-HCAC honors one year ago by piling up 240 kills and 122 blocks, while Tietje added 137 kills and 79 blocks. The newcomers could also see time, with Christa Seidenstricker, Tina Olinger and Chandler Castle looking to crack the lineup.

LIBEROS / DEF. SPECIALISTS Heather Bradshaw will add to the veteran presence of the back row for the Purple and Gold, as the senior libero enters her final collegiate campaign with 1,168 career digs to lead all active DC players. Bradshaw could be joined by another senior, as Sara Porter could also be leaned on to solidify the defense for Defiance during the 2010 campaign. Porter has been a very capable defensive performer during her time at DC, with three-straight seasons of at least 330 digs.

OUTSIDE HITTERS The Jackets should have plenty of options on the outside, as AllHCAC hitter, Sara Porter, joins Ashlyn Howell as DC’s top two returning options. Porter nailed 213 kills one year ago, while Howell scored 138 in her first collegiate campaign. A talented recruiting class could push Porter and Howell for time however, as Meghan Hinds, Chelsea Ludeman, Kali George and Gretel Briand will all get plenty of chances in the preseason to prove themselves.
