WELCOME TO DEFIANCE Defiance College is a private liberal arts-based college providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of more than 1,000 students. Defiance College offers students the best of both worlds. In a small campus environment, students can have hands-on experiences in their field of study through quality internships, domestic and international travel, diverse cultural encounters, and distinctive service and research opportunities for personal and professional growth. The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for six-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past three years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College was also selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification. Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2011-2012 year in Belize, Cambodia and Ghana. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness, with the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum and Project 701, a studentrun nonprofit organization. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better in their communities, in distant villages and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defiance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan,
The entire Defiance College family joins me in welcoming you to our campus and to today’s game. We hope that while you are with us today, you will have the opportunity to explore as many parts of Defiance College as possible and that you will share in the excitement about DC continuing to grow around the nation. This year’s entering freshman class is the largest in recent memory. During the past year, we have seen significant increases in applications, with particular increases in applications from outside Ohio, as we become more and more a college with national reach and scope. In fact, this past year, more than half of the students applying to DC came from outside Ohio, representing 48 states and territories. Why are students traveling from all around the United States (and other countries as well) to attend DC? I think it is because Defiance College offers students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered, small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain. As a small college, DC works to help students grow as people, providing individualized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each student. DC provides this in a rural, caring, and supportive setting, thereby enabling students to challenge themselves in new ways and grow as individuals, leaders, and citizens committed to service. At the same time, however, through a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportunities, helping students to develop a distinctive Defiance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. From a broad-based liberal arts education; innovative programs that link what goes on in the classroom with the realities of the outside world and give students distinctive hands-on experience in their relevant fields; international and domestic travel opportunities; exposure to diverse cultural experiences; the use of technologies to bring the world into the classroom in Defiance; and unique service and research opportunities, DC aims to give students the tools they need to become life-long learners and to make distinctive contributions to a changing world. While you are enjoying today’s events on campus, I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know some of our students individually. They are a wonderful group, with incredible potential. I very much enjoy being part of the Defiance College family with them, as they bring excitement, energy, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service – to name just a few of their many attributes. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D” all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host. Go Jackets! Sincerely, Mark C. Gordon, President

IN THE COMMUNITY Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary by exploring academic boundaries, taking on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and becoming engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. During the 2011-12 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed more than 2,028 hours of service in their community and around the country. Many student-athletes at DC have taken active roles in leadership and service initiatives campus-wide. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change. Women’s basketball team members Emma Starks, Erica King and Amber Moomey are DC Service Leaders. The Lady Yellow Jackets have aided the community in a number of ways this year. Each week members of the team participate in an on campus charity called Backpack Buddies, where backpacks are filled with food and given to underpriveleged childeren in the community. The women’s team is also heavily involved in the DC Dance Marathon, a popular event held once a year that raises money for charity. Defiance College is featured for excellence in blending academics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance is included in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.

ATHLETICS FACILITIES
SMART ATHLETIC CENTER
Yellow Jacket basketball utilizes several facilities on the Defiance College campus. Whether the team is competing against an HCAC rival at the newly refurbished Karl H. Weaner Community Center, or eating a pregame meal at the Serrick Campus Center, Defiance College coaches, administration and staff are devoted to providing the squad with the best facilities possible. During the past year the Weaner Center was updated with new bleachers, a new paint scheme on the court and new banners, which all helped to improve on what was already a classic atmosphere for college basketball. DC also opened an 84,000 square-foot field house in February of 2012. The multipurpose floor provides additional year-round training areas for all 22 varsity athletic programs at Defiance College. The George also boasts a full athletic training room, expanded fitness and free-weight areas and two full-length batting cages. All of these facilities are available for use by Defiance College Yellow Jacket student-athletes.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY
The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person.
The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the
impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid, or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement…to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

Jessica Morris was hired as the head women’s basketball coach of Defiance College in April. Morris became the 12th head coach in the 40-year history of the Yellow Jacket women’s basketball program. Morris brings seven years of coaching experience with her to Defiance College. The Galena, Illinois native most recently served as the assistant coach at NCAA Division III Whitman College. The Missionaries went 31-21 during the past two years with Morris on the staff, including a 21-11 mark within the Northwest Conference. Morris saw Whitman improve its record in each of her two years with the squad, while overseeing the strength and conditioning and recruiting efforts of the program. Prior to moving to Walla Walla, Washington to join the WC coaching staff, Morris went 32-15 as the head coach at Waterford Mott High in Michigan. SEASON PREVIEW
Jessica ‘Cox’ Morris takes over the reins of the Defiance women’s basketball team as the 12th head coach in the program’s history. Morris will direct a squad that returns nearly every player from the 2011-2012 team that finished fifth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Jackets bring back four of their five starters from last year and 87 percent of their scoring.
The Purple and Gold ranked high in a number of team statistical categories in the HCAC duing the 2011-2012 season. Defiance finished with the second highest free throw percentage in the conference with a mark of .723. The squad also did a good job on the glass, as the Jackets ranked second in offensive rebounding percentage at .342 and third in rebounding margin. DC utilized its length and quickness on the defensive end to consistently cause problems for the opposition, as the team finished fourth in blocked shots with an average of 2.6 per game and fourth in steals at 8.5 per contest. In the upcoming season, Defiance will rely heavily upon its experience and the familiarity of playing with each other as an advantage over its opponents. The Yellow Jackets boast three seniors and three juniors who received significant playing time a season ago, including Kim Comden, Erica King and Hannah Harshman who were named HCAC Preseason Players to Watch by the conference coaches. DC received solid play from its guards during last season’s campaign. King, a former HCAC Freshman-of-theYear recipient, led the Purple and Gold in scoring last year, pouring in 12.6 points per game. The junior led the squad in three-pointers made with an average of 2.4 per game. King was the only player in the Heartland to average over two per contest. Rachel Ciminillo joins King in the Defiance backcourt. The senior was second on the team in steals with 30 and chipped in with 3.9 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. Ciminillo started the last 21 games for the Jackets as a junior. Megan Zachrich enters her sophomore season after a successful freshman year. Zachrich averaged 19.8 minutes per game, while leading the team in steals with 33 and averaging 4.1 points per game. Rounding out the 2012-2013 backcourt is junior Maggie Neanen and four freshmen in Catey Fix, Kasey Geraghty, Sierra Stevens and Amber Moomey. Defiance will look to Comden, the team’s lone center, to anchor the frontcourt this season. Comden led the team in rebounds, blocks and free throw percentage last season, while averaging 10.6 points per game. The senior was first in the HCAC in free throw shooting with a percentage of .817 from the charity stripe. Another integral piece to the Jackets’ season will be Harshman. The junior was the most efficient scorer for DC, as Harshman recorded a .468 field goal percentage, placing her third in the conference. Harshman averaged 9.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Joining Comden and Harshman in the frontcourt is Kim Bingley, who broke into the starting lineup for the final 12 games last year. Bingley brings athleticism to the Jackets and averaged over three points and three rebounds. Coming off the bench for the Purple and Gold last season was Emma Starks, who set career highs in points and rebounds. Other forwards that will look to make an impact on the upcoming season are junor Ashley Birchmeier, sophomore Megan Fields and freshman Marissa Kath. The Yellow Jackets will look to use a balanced scoring attack and a deep bench to be successful in the upcoming season and improve on its 9-9 HCAC record from a season ago.
