Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its 2008 Community Engagement Classification. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2009-10 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization; and study abroad programs. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, the student newspaper, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan: On behalf of our wonderful Defiance College family, I am honored to welcome you to our campus and to today’s game. Defiance College is very much a college on the move. This year we welcomed the largest number of incoming freshmen in recent memory, up significantly from last year. In fact, 44 percent of our applicants this past year came from outside Ohio, representing 42 states and two territories. They came to Defiance College for many reasons. We are a small college with a real family feel. We offer a wide range of academic majors and intercollegiate and intramural athletic activities. We provide individual attention through our innovative Personal Success Plan (PSP) process in which students work with a team of people at the College to develop their own personalized strategic plans for success in college and beyond. Our wonderful faculty provide a stimulating academic environment as well as serving as personal mentors for students. Our coaches train student-athletes to excel in their sports while also giving them the guidance and support necessary to help them become committed students and community leaders. In fact, we are especially proud of the ways in which our student-athletes continue and further DC’s commitment to community service. Student-athletes serve in many different capacities, from volunteering to assist senior citizens and children, to helping to run, manage, and operate our path-breaking new student-run non-profit, Project 701. This non-profit gives students an opportunity not just to engage in voluntarism, but also to create, develop, run, and supervise a wide range of community-service projects. If you are reading this while you are on campus, you are probably close by the site for construction of our new field house. We are very pleased that all members of our DC community will soon be enjoying this field house, which will include extensive practice and workout facilities for athletes and non-athletes alike. We are particularly pleased that by building this field house, Defiance can help stimulate economic development in our community while providing a premier athletic facility in northwest Ohio. I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know our student-athletes both as members of a team and as individuals. They are an impressive bunch, who bring a wonderful level of excitement and energy to everything they undertake. And they also have tremendous potential. It has been my pleasure to get to know and interact with them on a regular basis. I encourage you to seek opportunities to meet them as well. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. IN THE COMMUNITY Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary, to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. Members of all Defiance men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports teams participate in service projects. Many student-athletes at DC have taken leadership roles in service initiatives campus- and community-wide, and several have also received scholarships for international projects. During the 2009-10 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed nearly 2,400 hours of service in their community. Earlier this year, the women’s basketball team volunteered at the first Pancreatic Cancer Research 5k Walk to raise funds and awareness for pancreatic cancer research. The event, coordinated by DC’s Chelsea Sites, raised more than $4,000 and attracted approximately 50 participants from the community. The Lady Jackets did their part by placing themselves in various locations around the course, and offering assistance and encouragement to the participants. “It was great to see all the people that participated for such a great cause, and we look forward to helping out in the future.” - Senior Guard, Molly Bateman Erica King and Emma Starks are members of the women’s basketball team who are Service Leaders for the current academic year. The Service Leader program rewards previous community service and develop students’ leadership skills. Lady Jackets, Brooke Zachrich and Jenna Deskins, will serve as McMaster Scholars for the 2010-11 academic school year. Zachrich with travel to Cambodia, where she will help implement a project that will train staff members of the Cambodia Women’s Crisis Center on non-violent parenting techniques, while Deskins will travel to New Orleans to analyze and work with the Family Justice Center. The team has also spent time volunteering at the local YMCA, where they led a free youth basketball clinic to kick-start the YMCA’s basketball season. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change.

Below are just a few of the projects supported by AVD in the last ten years. - Raised $10,000 for new lighting in the gym - Purchased weight room equipment totaling $18,000 - Allocated $8,000 for the women’s softball diamond - Appropriated $5,500 for the baseball press box - Allocated $3,000 for new ticket booths at the football stadium - Allocated $4,000 for a new 40-pound washer for the field house - Raised $7,500 for new locker rooms for men’s and women’s soccer - Appropriated $10,000 for the new softball field press box - Raised $10,000 to refinish and paint the floors in the Weaner Center - Raised $10,000 to purchase new seating for soccer field - Allocated $10,000 to refurbish the Hohenberger Lounge - Raised $15,000 to go towards the new field house

DIC DOUMANIAN

The 2010-11 season will be the fourth for Dic Doumanian as the head coach of the Lady Jacket basketball program. During the 2009-10 campaign, Doumanian led the squad to its best season in terms of wins (17) and winning percentage (.630) since 2003-04, and saw his team advance to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals for the first time since 2004. In his first three seasons at Defiance, Doumanian has seen his student-athletes garner eight All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference selections, four HCAC Player-of- the-Week awards, several all-tournament awards, and one D3hoops.com National Team of the Week selection. The Lady Jackets have also led the HCAC in team scoring in two out of three seasons since Doumanian’s arrival, while posting a conference-best 72.5 points per game during that span. Doumanian came to Defiance with 16 years of collegiate basketball coaching experience under his belt, including seven as the head coach at Kellogg Community College, where he posted a 120-82 overall record, and guided the Lady Bruins to two Michigan Community College Athletic Association Championships. Doumanian was also selected twice as the MCCAA Coach of the Year, once after guiding the Bruins to their first-ever national tournament appearance. Prior to taking over the reins of the program at Kellogg Community College, Doumanian spent time as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne from 1991-1997, and had brief stints on the coaching staffs at Mercyhurst College and Clarion University. Along with a lengthy coaching background, Doumanian has also worked as an athletics director, sports information director and a college professor.

ASSISTANT COACHES Nikki Oakland is in her second season with the Lady Jackets, after joining the coaching staff as a graduate assistant in early December, 2009. Following her arrival at DC, Oakland saw her Lady Jackets post a 14-6 record to finish out the season, and advance to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Semifinals for the first time since 2004. Oakland graduated from the University of Dayton, where she was a standout on the women’s basketball team and graduated with a degree in sport management. The former Flyer was a team captain and led the squad in scoring and rebounding from 2007 to 2009 as she became one of the most productive players in Dayton basketball history, ranking second all-time in blocks, eighth all-time in rebounds and 16th all-time in scoring. After graduating from UD, Oakland played basketball professionally in Leon, Spain, for CB Bembibre where she was the team’s third leading scorer and second leading rebounder.

NIKKI OAKLAND The 2010-11 season is the 20th for Dave Etchison as an assistant coach on the Lady Jacket basketball staff, where he assists in all facets of the program while specializing in student-athlete recruitment. Etchison has been responsible for bringing two All-American performers to Defiance during his tenure with the Lady Jackets. Prior to his time at Defiance, Etchison spent several seasons as a basketball coach for Tinora High School. He also has seven years of experience as a basketball official. The Defiance, Ohio native graduated from Morehead State University in 1971 with a degree in agriculture, and is currently employed as a highway technician for the Ohio Department of Transportation. An avid farmer, Etchison resides in Defiance with his wife, Bonnie. The couple has three children; Jason, Brian, and Kelli Ann, and one grandson.

DAVE ETCHISON Steve Oberlin is serving as an assistant coach for the Lady Jackets for a second season after joining the staff prior to their 2009-10 campaign. He has also been the head coach for the Defiance College men’s and women’s tennis programs for the past four seasons. Oberlin has coached basketball for eight years at Living Word Christian School, bringing the school two conference titles and one regional finalist appearance in the Associated Christian School International State Tournament, while posting a win-loss record of 107-52. Oberlin has also spent five years coaching basketball for men’s and women’s Amateur Athletic Union teams. The Stryker High product came to DC after earning a degree in business management from Northwest State, and is also currently involved with coaching at the Wauseon Health and Raquet Club.

STEVE OBERLIN Steve VanDemark joins the Lady Jacket coaching staff for the 2010-11 season, continuing a long affiliation with Defiance College. VanDemark graduated with an English degree from Defiance College in 1976, and has served at the school as a college trustee and trustee fellow for more than 20 years. During that time, his assignments have included chairing the school’s Marketing and Enrolment Management and Student Affairs Committees. VanDemark is a 39-year employee of the Defiance Publishing Company, and has been the general manager there since 1985. This summer, VanDemark retired from Rurban Financial Corporation after chairing that board of directors for 15 years. VanDemark and his wife Patty reside in Defiance and have two grown children.

SEASON PREVIEW The fourth season for any collegiate head coach is a big one, and the same is true for head women’s basketball coach, Dic Doumanian, as he enters the 2010-11 campaign. Doumanian finally has a squad comprised entirely of players that have been coached exclusively by himself and his staff to execute his up-tempo style of play for the first time in his tenure at DC. Six seniors, including four fourth-year players, give Coach Doumanian a bevy of leadership and proven performers to work with as the Jackets fight to remain atop the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings despite losing the production of their top-two scorers and rebounders from last season. Finding players to carry the scoring load should not be a problem for the Lady Jackets, who have led the HCAC in scoring twice in Doumanian’s first three seasons at Defiance, and boast the conference’s best scoring average with 72.5 points per game over the last three seasons. Defense and rebounding will be the keys to the Jackets’ success in 2010-11, and that means some new faces on the Lady Jackets’ roster will be counted on to step in and contribute right away to help the Jackets reach their goal of winning an HCAC Championship. What to Watch For: Second-year center, Kim Comden, has the potential to go a long way towards filling the Jackets’ need for a reliable rebounder and defender in the paint. Comden showed steady improvement last season, while earning the confidence of her coaching staff and teammates. She ranked third on the team in both rebounds (86) and blocks (10) last season, despite playing just over 12 minutes per game behind DC’s all-conference center, Mandie White, and many are excited to see what she can do in an expanded role this season. Senior shooting guard, Courtney Schmersal, has always had a gift for lighting up the scoreboard, but she has also always had the luxury of playing with some prolific scorers, who have occupied the defenders’ attention and allowed her to find some open looks. This season, defenses will likely key on the reigning HCAC three-point shooting champ, and force other players to make shots for the Jackets. Tasha Stucke and Molly Bateman are both coming off career-high seasons with 9.3 and 5.7 points per game respectively, but DC will definitely need some of its younger players to establish themselves as reliable scorers, and it will be interesting to see who will rise to that challenge. Coach Doumanian’s three-point heavy offense will require many of the newcomers to expand their offensive range, and their ability to adjust to a new system against some tough competition and play with confidence will be a critical factor in determining the Jackets level of success this season. HCAC Players-to-Watch, Tasha Stucke and Courtney Schmersal, are both closing in on some significant career milestones. Stucke has averaged 99 assists per season in her career at Defiance, and needs 95 dimes this season to rank fourth on DC’s all-time assists list. Courtney Schmersal is currently fourth on DC’s all-time three-point field goals list, and needs to hit 21 more long balls this season to become Defiance’s all-time leader. After hitting 2.5 three-pointers per game last season, Schmersal is on pace to be the DC’s all-time three-point field goal leader before mid-season.

The Jackets advanced to the HCAC Semifinals with an 83-70 win over the Manchester Spartans in the quarterfinals last season.

2009-10 SEASON REVIEW With a 17-10 overall record, the 2009-10 campaign was the Lady Jacketsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; winningest season since 2003-04, and marked their first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament appearance since 2005-06. Defiance advanced to the HCAC Tournament Semifinals, before losing the lead in the waning minutes of the game to the hosting Franklin College Grizzlies to end the season.
