THIS IS DEFIANCE AND PRESIDENT’S WELCOME THIS IS DEFIANCE COLLEGE Defiance College is a private liberal arts-based college providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of more than 1,000 students. Defiance College offers students the best of both worlds. In a small campus environment, students can have hands-on experiences in their field of study through quality internships, domestic and international travel, diverse cultural encounters, and distinctive service and research opportunities for personal and professional growth. The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance College has been named for six-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past three years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classification. Defiance College offers students a world of opportunities to enhance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement. The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to provide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2011-2012 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; and Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization. Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better – in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defiance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

SERRICK CAMPUS CENTER

WELCOME TO DEFIANCE Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan, The entire Defiance College family joins me in welcoming you to our campus and to today’s game. We hope that while you are with us today, you will have the opportunity to explore as many parts of Defiance College as possible and that you will share in the excitement about DC continuing to grow around the nation. This year’s entering freshman class is the largest in recent memory. During the past year, we have seen significant increases in applications, with particular increases in applications from outside Ohio, as we become more and more a college with national reach and scope. In fact, this past year, more than half of the students applying to DC came from outside Ohio, representing 48 states and territories. Why are students traveling from all around the United States (and other countries as well) to attend DC? I think it is because Defiance College offers students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered, small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain. As a small college, DC works to help students grow as people, providing individualized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each student. DC provides this in a rural, caring, and supportive setting, thereby enabling students to challenge themselves in new ways and grow as individuals, leaders, and citizens committed to service. At the same time, however, through a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportunities, helping students to develop a distinctive Defiance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. From a broad-based liberal arts education; innovative programs that link what goes on in the classroom with the realities of the outside world and give students distinctive hands-on experience in their relevant fields; international and domestic travel opportunities; exposure to diverse cultural experiences; the use of technologies to bring the world into the classroom in Defiance; and unique service and research opportunities, DC aims to give students the tools they need to become life-long learners and to make distinctive contributions to a changing world. While you are enjoying today’s events on campus, I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know some of our students individually. They are a wonderful group, with incredible potential. I very much enjoy being part of the Defiance College family with them, as they bring excitement, energy, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service – to name just a few of their many attributes. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D” all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host. Go Jackets! Sincerely, Mark C. Gordon, President

DC ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defiance College mission statement ‌ to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

JACKETS IN THE COMMUNITY Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary, to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience. Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement. During the 2011-2012 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed 2,028 hours of service in their community and around the country. Members of the men’s and women’s soccer teams contributed over 100 hours of service. During the past year, the teams volunteered their time and talents by serving as referees for the Paulding youth soccer league and painting dugouts at the DC soccer field. Many student-athletes at DC have taken active roles in leadership and service initiatives campus-wide. Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change. Men’s soccer team members Ian Fasnacht, Bobby Ordonio, Evan Allen and Jaren Prater are DC Service Leaders. Evan Allen is a McMaster Scholar to Belize and Ian Fasnacht is also a McMaster Scholar to Ghana. Defiance College is featured for excellence in blending academics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. Defiance is included in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.

In his first two years at DC, Van der Sluijs has been able to coach up a few Yellow Jacket student-athletes to great success. For the men, there have been four players to earn SecondTeam All Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honors along with a First-Team All-HCAC member. Prior to his career at Defiance, Van der Sluijs attended Wilmington College, where he was a three-year starter on the men’s soccer team. Men’s Soccer 2012

2012 SEASON PREVIEW Coach Alex Van der Sluijs is entering his third year at DC and is looking to improve on last year’s 5-10-3 mark (3-4-2 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference). After a slow start to the 2011 campaign, the squad made great strides in the second half of the season by finishing out with a 4-3-2 record over its last nine games. The Jackets hope to use that momentum to their advantage as they kick-off the 2012 season. With eight players returning to the club having 11-or-more starts last season, including the Second-Team All-HCAC goalie, the team is looking to make some noise in the conference. Heading the youthful Yellow Jackets group will be a quartet of players in junior goalkeeper Sean Roberts, junior midfielder Evan Allen, junior defender Luke Freels and sophomore forward Kevin Arriola. Leading the trio of Jackets is junior goalkeeper Sean Roberts. After getting the nod to guard the net in 17-of-18 matches and posting a solid 1.52 goals allowed average last season, he earned marks in the conference by making Second-Team All-HCAC. His veteran presence and calls from the goal will be used to get the defense set in the right spots. Junior midfielder Evan Allen has started 34-of-35 matches in his career with DC and has five scores. His ball skills in the middle of the pitch will be used to set up the Jacket attack. The South Euclid, Ohio native will be looked at to be a leader on the field, as one of the few upperclassmen in his third campaign with the club. Next up is junior defender Luke Freels. He has been a stalwart for the Defiance defense in his first two seasons, while starting 35-of-36 games. His strong kicks and throw-ins will be a huge asset to the squad, as his skills put the ball in better position for the offense to take advantage. Lastly, sophomore forward Kevin Arriola returns as the leading scorer on the team from 2011 with three scores. The New Lebanon, Ohio native saw ample time as a freshman by starting 12-of-15 matches and with him being one of only three returners to score a goal last season, a heavy load will be put on his shoulders to guide the DC offense.
