Defiance College Softball - TEAM33
Welcome from the president Dear Fellow DC Fan: It is a real pleasure to welcome you to our campus and to today’s event. We at Defiance College are extremely proud of our wonderful athletic program and of the many other activities taking place at DC. The students whom you are watching today are an important part of our larger DC family, and they are among the approximately 1000 DC students who benefit from the dedication and assistance provided by our wonderful faculty, alumni, staff, administrators, and friends. Students at DC receive a wide range of distinctive experiences as we strive to offer our students the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefits of a student-centered small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. What does this mean? It means that our students start working with us before they even start their classes to put together distinctive Personal Success Plans, so that we can work with them to tailor their DC education and experiences to their own individual interests and goals. Throughout their four years at Defiance, our students benefit from a broad range of activities and experiences that are structured both to help them achieve their individual dreams and also to enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. As part of that approach, we work with our students to help them develop their own Defiance College Resume. DC students also participate in a broad array of curricular and extra-curricular activities that give students distinctive hands-on experiences in their relevant fields. Just to name a few examples, we are proud of the work that our Criminal Justice students do in investigating cold cases for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit; our Education students get hands-on experience working in classrooms as early as their freshman year; Science students run and manage a 200+ acre wildlife preserve; through our Business Advantage Program, business, marketing, finance, sales, accounting and other students get hands-on experiences creating and running actual businesses. I could go on and on in terms of the different opportunities for our Communications, Sport Management, Pre-Med, Social Work, Graphic Design, and students in many other areas. We are all particularly proud of the great work that our students have done in running Project 701, a unique student-run, separately-legally-incorporated non-profit, in which DC students create, develop, run and manage service projects. From working with the two hospitals in town to run a free primarycare clinic to micro-finance lending; from providing computer repair services to packing backpacks full of food for needy elementary school students to take home on weekends, our DC students are gaining the tools to become entrepreneurial life-long learners, while also helping to address important local, regional, national, and international issues. In fact, Defiance College was recently named one of the top 20 schools in the country in terms of community service and engagement. DC students also get unique opportunities to travel both domestically and internationally. Under our DC Global Program, we actually guarantee an international opportunity in the junior or senior year to students in good standing who successfully complete our full four-year program. Over the past two years, DC students have traveled to Cambodia, Belize, Tanzania, Ghana, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, London, Paris, Vienna, Prague, Hungary, Slovakia, and more. Similarly, on a domestic level, DC students have traveled to New York City, Washington, D.C., Portland (OR), Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Kansas City, Des Moines, Denver, Selma, Memphis, Chicago, Nashville, Florida, South Carolina, New Mexico, and elsewhere. We are very proud of the opportunities we give our students to open their eyes, raise their sights, open their minds, and, in many cases, open their hearts as well. I hope you notice some of the recent improvements to our athletic facilities. Our George M. Smart Athletic Center (“the George”) began operation in February 2012, and we are thrilled with the opportunities our students have to use this 84,000 square foot facility, with its 200-meter indoor track, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, batting cages, fitness center, weight room, and much more. The new turf on our football/lacrosse field was installed in December, 2012, and we also recently renovated our outdoor E. Stevens Dix Tennis Courts. The new bleachers and improved flooring in our Weaner Center has also enhanced the experience for our fans, and more improvements are underway across campus this year as well. I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers, and staff for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go above and beyond on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated administrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is. We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host. Go Jackets! Sincerely, Mark C. Gordon, President

Defiance Athletics Philosophy The Defiance College intercollegiate athletic program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extracurricular educational and physical activity that fits within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person. The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the field and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentuate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college campus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders. The student-athletes of Defiance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletic program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related financial aid or the promise of financial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletic program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfillment of countless intrinsic values. The Defiance College intercollegiate athletic program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to coexist with the Defiance College mission statement‌to knowto lead-to serve and to understand.

Smart Athletic Center, getting preventative or recovery care in an athletic training facility on campus or eating a pre-game meal at the Serrick Center, Defiance College coaches, administration and staff are devoted to providing the student-athletes with the best facilities possible. Defiance College provides an 84,000 square foot field house, often referred to as “The George , that opened in February of 2012. Head Coach Ninth Season (170-159) Mount Union, 2001 Jodie Holava enters her ninth season in 2014 as the head coach of the Defiance College Yellow Jackets softball program. Holava is the all-time wins leader in the history of the program and sits at 170 wins entering the season. Holava became the all-time winningest coach in Defiance College softball history with the program’s sixth win of the 2013 season over Sage College in Kissimmee, Florida. That victory marked Holava’s 160 career win. The Yellow Jackets have won three conference championships in eight years during Holava’s tenure, and finished among the top-three in the final standings in NCAA regionals four of those years. Under Holava, the Yellow Jackets softball program has 24 All-HCAC first and second team selections, 10 HCAC All-Tournament team recipients, 18 HCAC Hitter/Pitcher of the Week awards, and four HCAC All-Sportsmanship team recipients. The softball program also has three NCAA Regional All-Tournament selections, three All-Region selections, and two Ohio Senior Collegiate All-Star Team selections. Under Holava, Marah Robinson was named HCAC Freshman of the year in 2007-08 and Justine Johnston was named HCAC Woman of the Year in 2008-09. The Yellow Jacket softball program has also excelled academically under Holava, boasting 23 HCAC Academic All-Conference award winners, 13 NFCA All-Academic Scholars, and nine NFCA Academic All-Americans. The program also has four ESPN The Magazine Academic awards, including a First-Team All-America selection to Renee Steffen in 2006-07. Holava joined the DC family in 2006, after spending the 2004-2005 softball season at Notre Dame College of Ohio as an assistant softball coach. With her help, the Falcons finished the season 23-17, marking the best record in school history. They finished 10-4 in the American Mideast Conference and reached the Region IX Tournament for the first time in school history. Prior to her stint at Notre Dame College of Ohio, Holava coached the Northcoast Spirit, a traveling softball team sanctioned by the National Softball Association. The Spirit went to the NSA World Series each year with Holava as their coach. Holava earned her bachelor’s degree from Mount Union College in athletic training, with a minor in health and secondary education. A four-year starter for the Raiders, she was a two-time First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference honoree and twice named to the All-Central Region First Team.

Kaycee Butt enters her first year as a full-time assistant coach for the Defiance College softball program and third year overall, after concluding her playing career with the Yellow Jackets in 2011. In her first two years, Butt served as a graduate assistant under Holava. In 2011, Butt finished her playing career with the Purple and Gold. During her playing time with the Jackets, Butt helped the team to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championships in 2008 and 2009 and earned All-HCAC accolades during her senior campaign. Butt also served on the Defiance College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for three years, was a four-time recipient of the DC Achievement Scholarship Award and spent four years with the school’s Citizen Leader Scholarship Program, logging over 200 hours of community service per year. The outstanding work on the field, in the classroom and in the community does not overshadow Butt’s coaching background. The Hilliard, Ohio native gained valuable experience while assisting with a variety of softball camps and fall leagues hosted by Defiance College over the past five years. Butt graduated from Defiance in May 2011 with a degree in sport management. While serving as a graduate assistant over the last two years, Butt completed a master’s degree in education.

McCartney also served on the Ohio Dominican University Sport Management Society as the groups Vice President and was a key member in the selection process for scholarships awarded to high school students. Along with her coaching duties, McCartney will work towards a master’s degree in education with a coaching concentration from Defiance College.

2014 Season Outlook
The Defiance College softball team will embark on its ninth season under head coach Jodie Holava with high hopes ahead for the 2014 season. The Yellow Jackets bring back a core group of the squad from 2013, returning eight of 12 starters from last season. Defiance will look to beat the preseason ranking of seventh and return to the HCAC tournament behind a strong group of upperclassmen and three All-HCAC returnees. One of those All-HCAC returnees is pitcher Alli Rowland (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville North) who was named to Second Team All-HCAC last season as a freshman. The sophomore brings back an impressive 2.22 Earned Run Average, which was third in the HCAC just a season ago. She also pitched the fourth most innings with 133.1 while only giving up seven walks. Rowland threw a no-hitter to close out her 2013 campaign. Joining Rowland for a powerful 1-2 pitching punch will be junior Lauren Dicke (Lima, Ohio / Lima Shawnee). Dicke pitched three complete games, including a shutout and had 32 strikeouts to 19 walks. Kailea Holbrook (Defiance, Ohio / Defiance) and Ashley Gordon (Carleton, Mich. / Allen Park Cabrini) will also contribute to the pitching duties for the Yellow Jackets. Behind the plate, DC looks to freshman Kali Campbell (Dundee, Mich. / Dundee) to make an immediate impact for the squad. She will be called on to control the game behind the plate as well as produce quality at-bats. Marisa Guyton (Powell, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) will also add some depth to the catching position, and will look to contribute with a great arm. Sandra Hubler (Berea, Ohio / Berea) and Megan Warren (Mason, Ohio / Mason) will split time at first base. The
14
Defiance College Softball - TEAM33
2014 Season Outlook Yellow Jackets will need the duo to be consistent at the first base bag. Hubler, as a freshman, made 14 appearances with one start and hit .214 on the year. Senior second baseman Maggie Neanen (Eaton, Ohio / Eaton) will look to repeat an impressive junior campaign. She was eighth in batting average last year in the HCAC with a .369. Neanen, an Honorable Mention All-HCAC recipient last season, has the fifth highest average retuning in 2014. The shortstop position will be controlled by Tori Plummer (Perrysburg, Ohio / Perrysburg) and Erica Truitt (Greenfield, Ind. / Eastern Hancock). Plummer brings back 65 starts over two seasons to the shortstop position and Truitt will be adding depth to the middle infield as a freshman. The hot corner will be controlled by Macy Davis-Ferrall (St. Marys, Ohio / Memorial), who is a returning Second Team All-HCAC selection from 2013. Ferrall has a knack for getting on base and finding ways to score as she led the HCAC in runs scored last season. She also brings a strong glove to the left side of the infield. Freshman Jill Schneider (Botkins, Ohio / Botkins) will add depth to the third base position this season in backing up Ferrall. Megan Pleskovic (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville), Brittany Shough (DeGraff, Ohio / Riverside), and Katie Haydett (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) will be called upon to protect the outfield this season. The three outfielders will look to bring consistent gloves and bats to the line-up for the Yellow Jackets starting the 2014 campaign with 92 games worth of experience between the three. Makayla McAvoy (Mt. Gilead, Ohio / Mt. Gilead), Gordon, Kirsten Gjertsen (Whitehall, Ohio / Montague), and Holbrook will look to provide big bats for DC in the offensive designated player spot and key pinch hitting moments. McAvoy and Holbrook played in all 38 games in 2013 and hit .260 and .231, respectively. The duo combined for 25 walks and 31 RBIs to go along with eight extra base hits. The Yellow Jackets will also look to the Freshman trio of Emily Denhard (Troy, Mich. / Kolbe Academy), Kayla Clute (Onsted, Mich. / Onsted), and Meagan Pace (Brownstown, Mich. / Carleton) to provide speed on the base paths in key pitch-running situations.
