20.09.21 I am very pleased to write a letter of reference for Defne Ogunc, who I had the pleasure of teaching in a design build course as well as a design studio course at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture in 2019. Defne is a delightful and resourceful student, who brings an enthusiastic can-do attitude to all tasks she engages with. She works hard, is a self-starter, as well as an excellent motivator for her peers, bringing humour and a positive attitude to every challenge. Her abilities in team work are excellent, finding ways to adapt to complex challenges, while helping team members to find their effective role to meet the given challenge. Of the two courses I taught, that Defne was enrolled in, I had more direct contact with her in a specialized design build course, involving a cohort of 18 students, with hands on fabrication and on-site building work, for the construction of a pow wow arbor for a First Nations community in Southern Ontario. Defne’s abilities to assist in defining the tasks and helping to ensure a productive work flow for the entire crew were impressive. She also lit up the work place with her sunny attitude and charming ability to get along with everyone, and to help members of the crew work through the sometimes daunting challenges of the building assembly, which involved an intricate interweave of laminated timber spanning members for a 33’ diameter dome structure. I observed the same tenacious and positive attitude in the design studio, where despite being set difficult design challenges, she always maintained a committed work ethic, doing the necessary background research and working through substantial drawing requirements, to produce effective and innovative design solutions. I believe that with her open minded, and diligent work ethic, Defne would be an asset in any team work environment, augmented by her ability to bring the team together, help problem solve and find the best solutions to given challenges. I am very happy to recommend Defne Ogunc, and believe she would be an asset to any given architectural practice environment. Sincerely,
John McMinn Professor, University of Waterloo School of Architecture

CRESCENDO 3B Studio- Individual Project Supervisor: Marie-Paule MacDonald Location: Los Angeles, California
Crescendo is “the loudest point reached in a gradually increasing sound.” Similar to a crescendo, decibels of sound gradually increase as we travel down in the building. The underground club is the loudest part of the building, and Music Therapy Pavilions on the rooftop is the most quiet. Situated in the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, the underground nightclub aims to make 300 people feel like they are in another world, providing an escape from their ordinary lives through loud sounds, synth-pop and psychedelic music, lighting, projections, and various visually appealing spaces. By building the stage resembling a portal and using different projections that move to the beat of the music, along with the acoustic tetrahedrons in the dance floor, the club makes its patrons feel like they have transported into different world.

LOGEMENT SOCIAL EN BRIQUE Brick Social Housing 3A Studio- Individual Project Supervisor: Adrian Blackwell Location: Toronto, Canada
For this site, I am proposing a 12 storey brick building for families, especially single moms and their kids with chronic homelessness. This building provides a shelter and brings joy to those moms who struggle the most. The underlying idea of the project is to incorporate plant life into residences’ homes and bring people together with common outdoor spaces like terraces with 2.5 m cantilevers. Thus, plants will improve the air quality and humidity levels while reducing stress, and the residences can sit and enjoy a cup of tea together and help one another when in need. By making terraces & winter gardens, I aim to create something similar to the European style of living.

VENUS 2A Studio- Individual Project Supervisor: Dereck Revington Location: Toronto, Canada
The Roman Goddess Venus functions encompassed love, beauty, desire, elegance, and prosperity. The key aspiration of the project is to bring everyone’s femininity and create a sense of community. The spaces of Venus is divided into three parts. The entrance is a condense, small space that leads you to a high open space that is used for seminars about equality, love and, sexuality. When you go upstairs, there is a gallery space where you see sculptures out of rose petals.

WEST BAY NORTH BEACH Done with Tabanlıoglu Architects Vision Beach Development Competition Top Two Finalist
Beach Deveopment Competition situated in Diplomatic street, Doha, Quatar. Generated an organic shaped promenade ,which creates continuity with Al Corniche Street. To show Doha’s three main axes we designed three piers which are Open-Air Bazaar , Sports &Leisure, Culture & Arts Pier. I had done some research about the enviroment, scale comperisons with other beaches, but my main job was photoshoping, editing and doing the postproduction of the final renders in this project.

DILATE 1B Studio- Group Project Supervisor: Donald McKay In collaboration with: Sigi Buzi, Nadya Closa, Hiba Zubairi
Residence for two people located in Cambridge,ON. The main idea of our project is the concept of a continuous concrete wall, that starts as a garden wall, turns into the sidewall of the building that wraps the structure, forming its envelope, then continues into the back garden wall. The interior of the building is designed in order to maintain an open concept, where the dining and kitchen is situated underneath the mezzanine in the single height space, while the living area is at the back in the double height space looking into the backyard.

A Wave of K now le d g e Situated in Osler and Dupont Streets, the roof of the building-a single curving surface- rises, undulates, and wraps inward at its highest point to completely envelop the building’s varios volumes. The curved roof allows a freedom of form that can simultaneously differentiate, and unite library’s two distinct programmatic elements which are performance space and the library itself.

POW WOW ARBOR 2B Design Build- Elective Supervisor: John McMinn Location: New Credit First Nations Reserve Mississauga, Canada
As an elective course in the summer term, I took part in the Design Build Program where we completed the Pow Wow Arbor for the Mississauga of the New Credit First Nations Reserve. We spent every Saturday steam bending wood lathes into formwork. In total we bend over 102 lathes, 96 of which we used for the final structure. At the end of the term we spent 8 days assembling the lathes on the site.
