The steel structures that defined the Modern era were characterized by fairly standard “framed” connection details. Standardized ways of connecting beams to columns were possible due to the orthogonal nature of the structure. Even the engineering of many structures was able to be simplified into a two-dimensional system of forces. The advent of complex structures introduced a high level of difficulty both in the calculation of force systems as well as the means to resolve their transfer through connections points. This was due to the more three-dimensional nature of the overall form as well as the absence of right angles of intersection. Complex geometries require a more responsive approach, and nodal connections have been developed to satisfy this role. Nodes play a critical role in the design of spaceframes, diagrid structures and lattice/gridshell systems.

The incorporation of cast steel nodes at the intersection of the 8 concrete filled steel tubes that form the delta frame supports at the Queen Richmond Centre in Toronto, ON, Canada, 2015 by Sweeny&Co Architects was a critical aesthetically driven choice that has resulted in the numerous design awards that this project has received. The project required a high level of fabrication coordination between the casting designers CastConnex and the steel fabricator/ erector Walters Group.

node /n d/ Noun. A point at which lines or pathways intersect or branch; a central or connecting point.7 Although in a looser sense the terms “joint” or “connection” might be considered synonymous, the term “node” conjures a very different visual idea of the aesthetics and functional requirements of a three-dimensional connection. Nodes as structural and functional terms first appeared in conjunction with geodesic domes and spaceframe technology. Nodes were critical in the creation of a heavily prefabricated system that could permit easy assembly on site. The members were fairly light and the geometries, though relatively regular, required the resolution of a high number of angled components at a point. The size of the node was directly related to the number of connecting members and the ability to nimbly accept their summative cross-sectional areas. Traditional steel fabrication methods using standard bolted or welding methods were incapable of addressing this type of connection. They were too bulky. Spaceframes were designed as prefabricated systems subjected to fairly consistent loading that encouraged significant uniformity in their design. Although some pre assembly of larger spaceframe assemblies can be done prior to lifting, many of the connections are done on site. Spaceframe nodes were quite unlike the angled connections in 2D or 3D trusses which were normally shop-fabricated and could afford some structural continuity of the chord members through the joint, providing stiffness. In theory, moment resistance at panel points is not required, as truss members are typically designed only for axial loading. Nodes, on the other hand, tend (although not exclusively) to be fabricated as discrete elements to which other members connect, so there is a level of discontinuity at this point, shifting certain responsibility to the physical connection between the node and the incoming members.

The basic issues and solution strategies for connecting steel, including lap joints, butt joints and methods of bolting and welding, are covered in detail in “Chapter 3: Connections and Framing Techniques” of Understanding Steel Design: An Architectural Design Manual. The intention of this chapter is to provide a coherent sampling of connection details that can provide the basis of and inspiration for project design and act as visual references. Contemporary connection design has borrowed significantly from the type of detailing characteristic of the High Tech movement. For some more unusual AESS applications, the node and the elements have been combined into one piece to create a more complete system. This path is chosen in many cases to create larger sub-assemblies that can be welded together in the fabrication shop. These also minimize site assembly and speed up erection.

The sculptural ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower, designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond with Arup for the London Olympics in 2012, uses a diagrid–like structure where the node and diagonal member are conceived as a modular unit system. Although most of the angles are inconsistent from element to element, the simple bolted-plate on– site connections allowed for sub-assembly prior to lifting and a speedier erection. The welding of the AESS structure was all done in the shop and the elements arrived to the site prepainted – for a more spectacular to view erection.

Element references the larger agglomerated pieces of a building. This includes trusses, beams and columns as they extend from one external connection point to the other. A small or uncomplicated element may be constituted simply by one steel member. In many AESS projects the additional complexity will require the assemblage of larger elements from a number of members.

The Canton Tower in Guangzhou, China, designed by Mark Hemel/Barbara Kuit/IBA Architects with Arup, creates sculptural interest in the diagrid structure by refraining from using the nodal elements that typically keep the intersecting steel elements in line, but instead allowing the members to overlap as a way to create depth in the view of the structure. The tubular elements and their connecting pieces were shop-fabricated so that they could be shipped as larger pieces. Note the scale of the workers on the bamboo scaffolding to gain an appreciation of the extreme size of these members. The tubes with the largest diameters were fabricated with all of the attachment elements and connected end-to-end without intermediate connecting pieces. Pieces with smaller diameters were attached on site.

Connections are of three basic types by virtue of their location and purpose: Internal connections are those by which the members are joined to create a larger element. These are most normally the result of shop fabrication. 117

We tried to establish a work method by splitting each time our research topics into five subthemes; each component of the group then develops a part of it personally, collecting them in digital research catalogues we call Quadernetti. Es überträgt sich auf die Wohnwünsche, die auf viel Service abzielen, Pragmatismus und Selbstverständlichkeit. Niemand will nach Stromanschlüssen suchen. Zukunftsforscher Stephan Jung prognostiziert, dass die Generation Y rund 17 Mal den Job wechseln und 15 Mal umziehen werde. Da müsse „Umziehen und Wohnen nach dem „Plugand-play-Prinzip“58 funktionieren. Was damit gemeint ist, kann jeder Vielreisende nachvollziehen. Dazu muss sich niemand als Digitalnomade ausgeben. Etwas Anderes kommt hinzu, etwas Fundamentales: Dichte ist kein abstrakter soziologischer Begriff mehr, wir spüren die Nachbarinnen und Nachbarn, hören sie, auch wenn die Tür geschlossen ist. Ein neues soziales Miteinander ist aber deswegen noch nicht in Sicht. Es wird eng in den Metropolen, und die Preise für Immobilien gehen durch die Decke. Selbst München, Hamburg und Mailand, ja sogar Regensburg und Linz muss man sich leisten können. Längst herrscht Wohnraumnot, während abgeschnittene Dörfer und abgehängte Landstriche verwaisen. Das könnte man natürlich als Luxusproblem abtun, denn generell nehmen wir mehr Raum, mehr Ressourcen in Anspruch als jede Generation vor uns.59 So nah wir uns auch digital geben, leben wir in gebauter Distanz. Heute sind 47 Quadratmeter das Maß aller Dinge.60 Die „Single-Republik“ fordert mehr baulichen Aufwand und Abstand bei – und das ist kein Widerspruch – großer digitaler Offenheit. In Großstädten legt daher eine Wohnform zu, die an Studentenzeiten erinnert: die flächenoptimierte Mikrowohnung mit anderthalb- oder zwei Zimmern, Küche und Bad.61 Nutzer und Nutzerinnen verzichten auf Quadratmeter, um doch in der Stadt leben zu können, am liebsten dort, wo etwas los ist.

Mindestabstände zu aufgehenden Bauteilen und Randabschlüssen

4 Typologien

Kleingärten oder Schrebergärten dienen in erster Linie der nicht erwerbsmäßigen gärtnerischen Nutzung sowie der Erholung. Entsprechend wird auch in vielen Kleingartengesetzen und -ordnungen eine Begrenzung anderer Nutzungen sowie des Versiegelungsgrades o. ä. vorgeschrieben. Kleingärten gehören immer zu einer Kleingartenanlage mit gemeinsamer Erschließung sowie Gemeinschaftsfreiräumen und ggf. einem Vereinsheim. Eine öffentliche Durchwegung ist nicht immer vorhanden, sollte aber vorgesehen werden. Insbesondere bei größeren Anlagen können dadurch Barrierewirkungen vermieden und die Kleingärten besser in den städtischen Raum integriert werden. Kleingärten erfüllen wichtige soziale, aber auch klimatische und ökologische Funktionen. In innerstädtischen Lagen dienen sie in besonderem Maße der Verbesserung

um die auswahl geeigneter straßenbaumarten zu optimieren, werden oftmals empfehlungs- oder negativlisten auf städtischer oder kommunaler ebene erstellt. in deutschland wird – basierend auf den erfahrungen der kommunalen grünflächenämter – eine straßenbaumliste durch den arbeitskreis der grünflächenamtsleiterkonferenz (gaLk) herausgegeben. > tab. 1.2.1 dieser arbeitskreis steht auch im austausch mit fachleuten aus den europäischen nach237 barländern. straßenbäume sind balliert mit einer stammhöhe von 220 bis 250 cm zu liefern. der durchgehende Leittrieb soll gleichmäßig mit mittelstarken ästen verzweigt sein, so der kleinklimatischen Verhältnisse, wirken positiv auf den der baum in den nächsten Jahrenund aufgeastet werden Wasserhaushalt, dass sind Lebensraum für Flora und Fauna kann. an hauptverkehrsstraßen istvon meist eine stammhöhe tragen zum Luftaustausch sowie zur Vernetzung Lebensräumen bei.bzw. ein Lichtraumprofil von 4,5 m notwendig, an nebenauch niedriger. die Merkmale der labilen bauweise bestehen im kern aus der beschränkung auf ein unaufwendiges, einfaches fundament, das keine statischen funktionen erfüllt, und dem weitgehenden Verzicht auf bindemittel. die fundamente werden meist als kies- oder schottertragschichten in geringer Mächtigkeit (je nach kornverteilung zwischen 10 und 20 cm, bei trockenmauern auch bis 40 cm) ausgebildet

men und ihren eigenschaften. > Kap. 1.5 Naturwerksteine die hohlräume im gestein müssen so klein wie möglich sein. Passgenaue zwickel verspannen dabei die steine untereinander und ersetzen damit die bindewirkung des Mörtels. trockenmauern können nur als freistehende Mauern oder als einfache schwergewichtsmauern ausgeführt werden, die durch beimischung von erde in den fugen eine begrünung mit stauden für steinanlagen erlauben. die ausführung mit unregelmäßigen steinen, die ohne Mörtel aufgesetzt werden, entspricht nicht der din 1053 – Mauerwerk. derartige traditionelle trockenbauweisen kommen jedoch nach wie vor zum einsatz und beruhen auf überlieferten regeln und erfahrungswerten. sie lassen sich aber ingenieurmäßig nicht berechnen, da sie nicht aus genormten steinen bestehen, die als grundlage für entsprechende berechnungen unentbehrlich sind. > Abb. 3.5.15 und 3.5.16

und können lediglich aufsteigendes bodenwasser verhindern (frostfreie gründung). druckkräfte müssen direkt vom baugrund aufgenommen werden können. daher sind labile bauweisen nur auf gewachsenen böden möglich. in geringem umfang ist die labile ausführung – der stabilen gegenüber – elastischer, wodurch sie nachträglichen setzungen folgen kann, ohne ihre konstruktiven eigenschaften zu verlieren. zu dieser bauweise zählen neben trockenmauern auch Winkelstützmauern aus fertigteilen bis zu einer geringen höhe sowie Palisaden (> Abschnitt Stützwände). zusätzlich gibt es auf dem Markt spezielle hangsysteme wie raumgitterwände aus fertigteil-kübeln und Pflanzschalen. Verfüllte stützkörper wie erd- oder steingabionen können in abhängigkeit von der gewünschten höhe sowohl labil als auch stabil ausgeführt werden.

Ein allgemeiner Konsens hinsichtlich des ansteigenden Meeresspiegels wird sich wohl erst durchsetzen, wenn die Reichsten das Interesse am Ozean verloren und sich von seinen Küsten und Gefahren zurückgezogen haben. Einige der in unmittelbarer Küstennähe ansässigen Eigentümer fühlen sich nicht nur physischen Gefahren ausgesetzt, sondern auch einer wachsenden Angst vor der schleichenden Zerstörung ihrer Anwesen durch die Küstenerosion. Ihre Familien-Cottages liegen gefährlich nah am Wasser und haben die Wellen vor der Haustür. Und die höher gelegenen Gebäude in vermeintlich sicherer Lage sind ebenso der Verwitterung ausgesetzt. Konfrontiert man die Hauseigentümer mit der Zerbrechlichkeit ihrer Häuser, ganz gleich, wo sie liegen, spürt man ihr Unbehagen angesichts des Unvermeidlichen und fragt sich, wie lange sie ihren vergeblichen Kampf noch führen und einer Bedrohung standhalten werden, die ihnen mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit bald ins Haus steht.

Vielen von uns ist ein Leben am Ozean ein elementares Bedürfnis, eine tiefe Sehnsucht nach dem Ursprung unseres Daseins. Wir finden zu uns selbst, wenn wir den ursprünglichen Klängen eines Strandes lauschen, dem Rauschen sich brechender Wellen, wenn wir die salzige Meeresluft einatmen und den Blick am fernen Horizont schweifen lassen. Der Ozean vereint uns mit der Zeit und verbindet uns mit den Ufern der weiten Welt. Seine Anziehungskraft wirkt sanft und doch entschieden, er ist Teil unseres Unbewussten. Diese Gefühle verspüre ich noch immer, wenn ich beim Fliegen Spaziergänger am Strand erblicke, Urlauber, die sich im Sand ausstrecken und in der Sonne rekeln, oder wenn ich in den Sommermonaten zwischen den Barriereinseln und dem Festland über die Buchten gleite. Dann möchte ich am liebsten meinem einsamen Cockpit entfliehen und in einer Strandbude einkehren. Es entbehrt nicht einer gewissen Ironie, dass jene, die von den Vorzügen der Küste schwärmen, doch so wenig geneigt scheinen, sich die Folgen der Klimakrise vor Augen zu halten. Die gesamte Küste entlang, an all diesen Schauplätzen der amerikanischen Freizeitkultur, setzen Menschen die Zukunft unseres Klimas aufs Spiel, ohne einen Zusammenhang zwischen ihrem Lebensstil und dessen drastischen Folgen erkennen zu wollen. Vom Himmel aus betrachtet deutet wenig darauf hin, dass die Küstenbewohner bereit wären, ihren Konsum einzuschränken oder gar Abgasemissionen zu verringern. Solaranlagen oder Windkrafträder sind nach wie vor eine Seltenheit. Die Strandpromenade ist eine Bühne für exorbitante Reichtümer und materielle Exzesse: riesige Strandvillen mit Meerblick und privatem Swimmingpool, üppige Yachten, die mit kraftstrotzenden Motoren prahlen, Batterien von Luxusreisebussen, die sich hinter den Stränden aufreihen. Das Leben an der amerikanischen Ostküste erinnert an eine Klimaanlage, die bei aufgerissenen Fenstern auf Hochtouren läuft. Der anhaltende Andrang auf die besten Plätze an der Küste und die gleichzeitige Missachtung klimatischer Belange ist schockierend angesichts des Wachstums in den Küstenstädten und der zunehmenden Bevölkerungsdichte. Diese Strandkultur beruht auf der Anziehungskraft zahlreicher Barriereinseln, dieser natürlichen Sanddünen, die sich entlang der Ostküste und in Teilen des Golfs von Mexiko nahezu ununterbrochen aneinanderreihen. Hier wurden Küstenstädte errichtet, die sich dicht an dicht kilometerlang an die Strände pressen – ein Anblick, der das Gefühl eines bevorstehenden Desasters aufkommen lässt. Die städtebaulichen Bebauungspläne dieser Küstenregionen bieten viel Abwechslung und entspringen einem amerikanischen Immobilienwahn, der nicht erst seit gestern wütet. Zahlreiche Bauprojekte inmitten der Lagunen wurden in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren realisiert, in einer Zeit, als man die Bedeutung natürlicher Ökosysteme noch nicht in dem Maße erkannt hat, wie es heute der Fall ist. Das vielfache Trockenlegen von Sümpfen hat verheerende Spuren hinterlassen. Diese Art der Bebauung wird jedoch nach wie vor toleriert, neue
