Founded in 2008, the French-Lebanese firm of Youssef Tohme Architects and Associates has a delicate signature that takes the regional context as its starting point in developing an individual architectural language. By using a wide variety of materials that interact with the built environment, they create buildings that evolve over time alongside their inhabitants. The book documents twelve of the firm’s projects – from a single-family home to a museum, including urban interventions in Beirut, Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille, and Bucharest. The book

4

also includes an essay that takes a comprehensive look at the working methods of this firm, focusing in particular on the dimension of time and the changes that occur as the buildings are used. Modernism is the most defining architectural expression of the 20th century – a movement that transformed built environments around the world in an unprecedented way. Many of these buildings are in need of repair now or their original function is no longer needed. This publication in cooperation with Docomomo explores strategies of rehabilitating works of this era. Architects and art historians discuss challenges in the preservation of Modernist buildings. 24 best-practice examples are highlighted, illustrating various

7

approaches to restoration. Among them, there are unknown gems such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon or the stunning house that Juan O’Gorman built for his father in Mexico – interventions guided by respect for the authenticity of the architecture and based on substantial research. Architecture and freehand drawing are inextricably linked. Even in the Gothic period, the principle applied: what you can’t build, you at least draw. The same applies to the sketches of Wolf dPrix, co-founder and CEO of Coop Himmelb(l)au. Over the 53 years of their creation, Prix’s sketches formed the first stage of every design – despite rapid developments in digital architecture. Whereas his freehand drawings were proxies for completed projects in the 1960s and 1970s, today they serve as

strategic guides to the firm’s complex buildings. From 2,800 archival drawings, 1,300 examples were selected for publication to represent developmental dynamics in an archive-like format. As invaluable documents of architectural history, they illustrate some 320 selected projects.

The largely unknown oeuvre of the Philippine architect Leandro V. Locsin embodies the search for identity in the built environment. Locsin opened his practice in 1953 in the capital Manila which, after the aerial attacks by the Allied forces for the liberation of the Philippines from Japanese occupation, had been almost completely destroyed. The reconstruction, as well as technical innovations and favorable political and economic conditions, made it possible for him to design a wide range

and large number of projects, including hotels, churches, cultural venues, commercial and public buildings. His work combines inspiration from modernism with local traditions and comprises a total of 245 projects, of which more than half were completed. The book presents a selection of the most important buildings and projects. Jean-Claude Girard Architect and Lecturer at the HEPIA Geneva

The Estonian-American civil engineer August Komendant (1906–1992) worked with numerous famous architects and engineers on several of the 20th century’s most iconic buildings.Concrete was Komendant’s passion through decades. He used his expertise in designing structures as different as the Kadriorg Stadium grandstand in Tallinn, Estonia (Elmar Lohk, 1938), the Habitat ’67 experimental housing complex in Montréal, Canada (Moshe Safdie, 1967) and the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, USA (Louis I. Kahn, 1972).

Komendant combined technical expertise with a keen sense of aesthetics: as an engineer, he valued the timeless and enduring qualities of architecture. He knew that miracles require more than spreadsheets and a budget – the creative impulse is essential. Carl-Dag Lige Architecture critic and historian, curator at the Estonian Museum of Architecture

Giuseppe Pizzigoni, an architect of classical and postwar modernism in northern Italy, owes his reputation to his connections with the Novecento movement, his independence from fascism, and his interest in innovative residential layouts. This study presents for the first time the architect’s entire built work, comprising not only residential structures but also sacral buildings, monuments, educational and industrial buildings. Pizzigoni’s experimental spirit drove him to create original designs across diverse fields of

architecture, typology and forms of living, construction systems and load-bearing structures, geometry and aesthetics. Each of the approx. 60 works is described through the plans of the building, an axonometric view and detailed drawings, all of which have been redrawn for this publication. The typology of the urban villa originated in the late 19th century yet still represents a viable and attractive alternative to the detached single-family home. Several apartments spread across up to five floors are connected by a common staircase. In terms of urban planning, this type of structure makes it possible to reconcile dense urban settlement with open green spaces. The book is a guide for students and teachers to understand the need for, the role of and the methods and techniques of freehand analytical sketching in architecture. The conceptual goal of this approach is to use drawing not as illustration or depiction, but as exploration. The main component is a series of chapters that constitute a typology of fundamental issues in architecture and urban design; for instance, issues of „façade“ are illustrated with sketch diagrams that show how

façades can be explored and sketched through a series of specific questions and step-by-step procedures. In the expanded and updated edition, a new part explores the questions and experiences of large architectural offices in applying freehand drawing in the practice of architectural design.

The way public spaces are designed reflects the period in which they were created. However, in our globalized world of experience and images the desire for uniqueness tends to achieve the opposite: increasingly, designers of open spaces resort to the same devices and thereby distance themselves from the urban context. The author analyzes ten outstanding contemporary designs of public spaces in Europe in terms of their function in the urban context and what materials are used for their

implementation. In interviews with the designers she retraces the changes of the concepts during the design stage of the projects, underpinning her findings with numerous sketches. In addition, her research focuses on how the projects were received in the community. A topical introduction to the design of public spaces. This set of four volumes on steel design by Terri Meyer Boake comprises both an overall approach for understanding how architects design and build with steel, as well as cutting-edge specialized topics reflecting the revolutionary transformation in the use of steel in architecture in the last decade. Among these are diagrid structures, architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS) and non-orthogonal geometries in steel design. Boake’s books “underscores the currency of architectural designs that combine the tectonic expression of steel with particular attention to the craft of building

and its detailing” (Journal of Architectural Education). Each volume comprises thematic sections that provide a proficient overview of the topic, and covers constructed examples from across the world. The analyses, both detailed and descriptive, are amply documented by photographs by the author.

The steel structures that defined the Modern era were characterized by fairly standard “framed” connection details. Standardized ways of connecting beams to columns were possible due to the orthogonal nature of the structure. Even the engineering of many structures was able to be simplified into a two-dimensional system of forces. The advent of complex structures introduced a high level of difficulty both in the calculation of force systems as well as the means to resolve their transfer through connections points. This was due to the more three-dimensional nature of the overall form as well as the absence of right angles of intersection. Complex geometries require a more responsive approach, and nodal connections have been developed to satisfy this role. Nodes play a critical role in the design of spaceframes, diagrid structures and lattice/gridshell systems.

1. THE EMERGENCE OF THE NODE: SPACEFRAMES 7 Definition of Node by Oxford Dictionary on lexico.com, a common definition referring to structural systems.

The incorporation of cast steel nodes at the intersection of the 8 concrete filled steel tubes that form the delta frame supports at the Queen Richmond Centre in Toronto, ON, Canada, 2015 by Sweeny&Co Architects was a critical aesthetically driven choice that has resulted in the numerous design awards that this project has received. The project required a high level of fabrication coordination between the casting designers CastConnex and the steel fabricator/ erector Walters Group.

node /n d/ Noun. A point at which lines or pathways intersect or branch; a central or connecting point.7 Although in a looser sense the terms “joint” or “connection” might be considered synonymous, the term “node” conjures a very different visual idea of the aesthetics and functional requirements of a three-dimensional connection. Nodes as structural and functional terms first appeared in conjunction with geodesic domes and spaceframe technology. Nodes were critical in the creation of a heavily prefabricated system that could permit easy assembly on site. The members were fairly light and the geometries, though relatively regular, required the resolution of a high number of angled components at a point. The size of the node was directly related to the number of connecting members and the ability to nimbly accept their summative cross-sectional areas. Traditional steel fabrication methods using standard bolted or welding methods were incapable of addressing this type of connection. They were too bulky. Spaceframes were designed as prefabricated systems subjected to fairly consistent loading that encouraged significant uniformity in their design. Although some pre assembly of larger spaceframe assemblies can be done prior to lifting, many of the connections are done on site. Spaceframe nodes were quite unlike the angled connections in 2D or 3D trusses which were normally shop-fabricated and could afford some structural continuity of the chord members through the joint, providing stiffness. In theory, moment resistance at panel points is not required, as truss members are typically designed only for axial loading. Nodes, on the other hand, tend (although not exclusively) to be fabricated as discrete elements to which other members connect, so there is a level of discontinuity at this point, shifting certain responsibility to the physical connection between the node and the incoming members.

130

The basic issues and solution strategies for connecting steel, including lap joints, butt joints and methods of bolting and welding, are covered in detail in “Chapter 3: Connections and Framing Techniques” of Understanding Steel Design: An Architectural Design Manual. The intention of this chapter is to provide a coherent sampling of connection details that can provide the basis of and inspiration for project design and act as visual references. Contemporary connection design has borrowed significantly from the type of detailing characteristic of the High Tech movement. More information on these precedents can be found in “Chapter 5: AESS: Its History and Development” in Understanding Steel Design: An Architectural Design Manual.

131

For some more unusual AESS applications, the node and the elements have been combined into one piece to create a more complete system. This path is chosen in many cases to create larger sub-assemblies that can be welded together in the fabrication shop. These also minimize site assembly and speed up erection.

The sculptural ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower, designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond with Arup for the London Olympics in 2012, uses a diagrid–like structure where the node and diagonal member are conceived as a modular unit system. Although most of the angles are inconsistent from element to element, the simple bolted-plate on– site connections allowed for sub-assembly prior to lifting and a speedier erection. The welding of the AESS structure was all done in the shop and the elements arrived to the site prepainted – for a more spectacular to view erection.

ily into the expression of the AESS.

DEFINITIONS Member refers to the discrete sections of steel, such as wide-flange (Universal) sections, hollow structural sections (HSS), angles, channels, rods or cables. Element references the larger agglomerated pieces of a building. This includes trusses, beams and columns as they extend from one external connection point to the other. A small or uncomplicated element may be constituted simply by one steel member. In many AESS projects the additional complexity will require the assemblage of larger elements from a number of members.

The Canton Tower in Guangzhou, China, designed by Mark Hemel/Barbara Kuit/IBA Architects with Arup, creates sculptural interest in the diagrid structure by refraining from using the nodal elements that typically keep the intersecting steel elements in line, but instead allowing the members to overlap as a way to create depth in the view of the structure. The tubular elements and their connecting pieces were shop-fabricated so that they could be shipped as larger pieces. Note the scale of the workers on the bamboo scaffolding to gain an appreciation of the extreme size of these members. The tubes with the largest diameters were fabricated with all of the attachment elements and connected end-to-end without intermediate connecting pieces. Pieces with smaller diameters were attached on site.

Connections are of three basic types by virtue of their location and purpose: Internal connections are those by which the members are joined to create a larger element. These are most normally the result of shop fabrication. 117

This publication explores the dissonance between the overwhelming American landscape and the underwhelming architecture of its strip malls, fast food chains, motels and tract housing. In an undertaking that is part travelogue, art book and architectural survey, it charts the patterns created by reigning modes of transportation and examines how people came to accept the bland, branded boxes lining America’s streets and freeways as architecture. Beginning with a portrait of ambulatory Native American societies and the

introduction of horses by the Spaniards, the book discusses the built environment shaped by trains, cars, planes and rockets, and looks toward a future architecture defined by autonomous cars and air taxis. This highly visual narrative includes extensive historical photography and Kaven’s own art. The publication rethinks climate control – a key concern of the discipline of architecture – through the lens of city climate phenomena over the course of the 20th century. Based on a history of climate control on urban scales, it promotes the integration of indoors and outdoors in order to reduce environmental and thermal loads in cities. Just as heating and cooling practices inside the buildings are affecting the (urban) climate outdoors, urban heat islands are influencing the energy requirements and thermal conditions inside the buildings.

ARCHITECTURE   CITIES | REGIONS | URBANISM

While 20th century architecture learned to control the climate of a building, the architecture of the 21st century needs to learn to cope with the climate of cities. Problems such as urban heat and air pollution need to be included in planning and design. Based on empirical realities in Cairo, Chongqing, Geneva and Santiago de Chile, the book underlines that the materiality and social practices attached to room heating, compound greening, street alignment or climate policies together form the tissue for

Peter Rowe and Yun Fu’s second volume on the modernization of architecture in the Far East deals with Southeast Asia and Austronesia, including the 12 nation states of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, East Timor, Philippines and Taiwan, as well as the ocean peoples of Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia. The modern architecture of these culturally and nationally heterogenous regions echoes local vernacular traditions and colonial

as well as postcolonial hegemonies from both the East and the West. The book tells the stories of these separate roots and their culmination into contemporary architectural production, analyzing the distinctiveness and quality of approx. 65 building projects that have emerged in the past half century.

Today’s China is experiencing massive urban growth: new towns are built, extensive suburbanization processes occur in many regions, and agricultural spaces are radically altered by the construction of new rural settlements. This publication considers these processes for the Central Plains of China, the previously mostly agricultural region comprising the lower reaches of the Yellow River, and, more specifically, Zhengzhou, the capital of the Henan province. Thus, a new landscape ensues that

distances itself from the traditional Chinese city but also from other urbanizations that occurred worldwide in the last century. The book investigates this unprecedented condition – for good or for bad – on the basis of the urban layout and the architecture of new infrastructures, housing, and spaces for production. What is a collective process in architecture and how does it influence the planning of our built environment? Although the hierarchically organized office with its claim to individual authorship, still dominates the architectural landscape, more and more horizontally organized collectives with alternative approaches to architectural planning are emerging. In this insightful survey of renowned European collectives, Natalie Donat-Cattin offers an overview of the range of their working methods, organizational forms, goals, and projects.

From: false mirror office To: Natalie Donat-Cattin Subject: How is your collective structured? As any horizontally structured collective managed via remote meetings and composed of “divas,” our office organization is easily comparable to something in between a battle and an orgy, that is, an anarchist organization where tasks are not well defined and where there is continuous overlapping, without a fixed and rigid hierarchical structure, inevitably oscillating between moments of strong conflict and others of desperate love.

We tried to establish a work method by splitting each time our research topics into five subthemes; each component of the group then develops a part of it personally, collecting them in digital research catalogues we call Quadernetti. If this additive research method has created a sort of harmony during our Monday eve’s Skype meetings, when it comes to the design phase, we always dedicate way more time discussing rather than taking decisions over our projects. We often dedicate a great amount of time debating on the theme and scope of our work, relying on an unwarranted capacity of producing quality material in the last stretch. We formerly defined this as an antiprofessional approach: instead of specializing in different research areas, we confront continuously to enrich our shared knowledge on various topics. This aspect is translated in the collaborations that we have with external actors: whether we

has the responsibility of the project or the experience, either. This creates a certain dynamic. However, this method is questionable and our goal is to understand these interactions. It is not necessarily about horizontality, it is about maintaining transparency and critical thinking. Once a project is developed, a small group will have all the responsibilities and it is always more complicated to flatten hierarchies. Each project brings in new ingredients to develop, it is about human relations. Beyond the practice, there are the human relations, which are not born from a pyramid structure. Behind a collective project, we hide these human relationships, which are sometimes conflicting and generally complex.

ARCHITECTURE   THEORY | HISTORY

Welcome to the hybrid home, in which the bathroom has become a temple of wellness, the living room an online couch, and the kitchen a lounge. Everything appears tidy and chic, perfect for social media. In the Instagram Age, even micro-apartments are mutating into semi-public places. The German journalist Oliver Herwig has been studying the transformation of living spaces and dream interiors for years. In this book, he portrays a society in the throes of digital transformation. The lines between work, leisure

Oliver Herwig Author, freelance journalist (SZ, FAZ) and lecturer for design theory at the University of Art and Design, Linz

Niemand will nach Stromanschlüssen suchen.

and rest have been blurred, as our homes become temporary, multipurpose work, fun and multimedia spaces; the office has invaded the home, and the world of smart shopping is always just a word away thanks to Alexa. Around 1800, one of the most influential architectural concepts of the last 250 years emerged – that of built spaces as technical devices. Climate, morality, and comfort are the three main themes of this study, and each is vividly examined in separate chapters through synchronous comparison and with the help of examples. The emergence of corresponding metaphors, knowledge, and construction forms is traced over a period of about 70 years.

The author focuses particularly on the operative dimension of architecture. Thus, the book provides a historical perspective on a key topic for the future of architecture. The book is aimed at readers interested in architecture, technology or the cultural history of building and living.

Lars Lerup's conceptual explorations as a designer and thinker have been inspired by philosophers and artists from Foucault to Beckett. Lerup's furniture designs elude consumer culture. They conform neither to what is commonly understood as useful nor to what is typically regarded as necessary. They question the assumed functions of furniture and, at the same time, their assigned place in space. His pieces interrogate their roles and positions and introduce a disturbing or at least disconcerting note to conventional floor plans.

This autobiography of a design project is about rendering visible the consumerism that is driving the current economically motivated expansion of our cities, and dealing with the consequences for the environment and society. In the era of cybernetics, architects suddenly encountered entirely new ways of operating technical systems: buildings could be calculated using circuit diagrams, creativity and imagination were confronted with the technical intelligence of thinking machines. Architects found themselves in the crosshairs of cybernetics. At stake was nothing less than the continued existence of the architect’s inventive intelligence in a techno-scientific world. Today, we see computing machines,

once so heavy, losing weight while gaining power. Computers are fully colonizing the human environment, creating their own digital ecosystems, and giving rise to forms of society and ways of being that cannot even be explained without Big Data. Decisions regarding the supporting structure have an influence on the design of a building as well as an economic and ecological impact. The creation of great and innovative buildings requires close collaboration of architects, clients and structural engineers. Modern structural systems can benefit from an appropriate combination of various building materials. The Manual of Structural Design goes beyond material confines and showcases suitable construction principles for different building

tasks. Classical masterpieces and outstanding current projects are used to demonstrate the potentials of structural systems for various building tasks and consider alternatives. Easyto-compare structural principles offer a basis for a common level of communication in an interdisciplinary planning process. ARCHITECTURE  DETAIL

Hybrid structures of reinforced concrete and wood combine the advantages of solid construction with those of wood and thus represent an optimal construction option. Wood is eco-efficient and high degrees of prefabrication ensure an upscale quality standard and enable implementation without scaffolding, which in turn promises economic benefits. Concrete offers proven and cost-effective supporting structures for all building classes with common concepts of building technology and fire and sound insulation. The publication shows detailed solutions for the successful implementation of structural engineering and building physics requirements

ARCHITECTURE  DETAIL

Apart from being known for wine and classical music, the Palatinate is increasingly characterised by an appreciation of its everyday architecture. While including historical monuments, this often extends to neglected, forgotten buildings that would formerly have either been demolished or “renovated” beyond recognition. Now the building fabric is preserved and appreciated for the sake of sustainability and regional identity. Rather than being located in faceless outskirts, these buildings often

have the prime advantage of a central location in a gradually developed urban landscape.

Urban gardening and agriculture have become important elements of sustainable urban planning in the context of persistent urbanization amid limited resources. However, a consideration of the cultural-historical dimension has been lacking up to now. The editors present the first comprehensive outline of traditional forms of food production in cities to help preserve this valuable knowledge. On the basis of current research findings, they develop new

perspectives and guidelines for recognizing traditional food production systems as an aspect of cultural heritage and for dealing with urban agriculture worldwide. Frank Lohrberg, Katharina Christenn, Axel Timpe, Ayça Sancar Institute of Architecture, RWTH Aachen University

How can you turn dry statistics into attractive and informative graphs? How can you present complex data sets in an easily understandable way? How can you create narrative diagrams from unstructured data? This handbook of information design answers these questions. Nicole Lachenmeier and Darjan Hil condense their extensive professional experience into an illustrated guide that offers a modular design system comprised of 80 elements. Their systematic design methodology makes it possible

for anyone to visualize complex data attractively and using different perspectives. At the intersection of design, journalism, communication and data science, Visualizing Complexity opens up new ways of working with abstract data and invites readers to try their hands at information design. "This text might be rendered on a screen. It could appear on paper as well. I have written it using a computer. As you are reading this text, some thing is functioning as an interface. Although I do not know exactly what this thing is, I know for certain that there is some thing here, slipping your mind as you read this text. This knowledge and this slipping away is the subject of this book. This research project questioned the sustaining support of digital objects: It aimed to challenge the habitualisation

With this solid introduction to the subject of parquet distortion, the editors fill a gap by tackling a topic that has a particular appeal in the age of digital design. This form of geometric transformation, best known through the work of M. C. Escher, was introduced into design curricula by the American professor William S. Huff at the Ulm School of Design, Germany in the 1960s. The book brings together scholarly articles by the most important authors in the field with archival material from Ulm. What do the work processes of a neurosurgeon and a painter have in common? Applying the notions of Design, Gestaltung, and Formatività, this book sheds new light on processes of formation and transformation in the material world we live in. Scholars from the fields of history, philosophy, psychology, media, and cultural studies question established processes of giving form, while artists, designers, engineers, and scientists describe their creative processes. This book provides its readers with an overview of the spectrum of "philosophies of making”

and invites them to reflect on their own creative process, its possibilities and associated responsibilities to the environment, and ultimately to express these in action. There has never been a more urgent need to develop a new relationship between matter and form. Patricia Ribault Professor for Performative Design Research at Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee

This publication showcases and documents the work of the visual artist Judith P. Fischer, whose interplay of line, form, and space coalesces into a multilayered oeuvre. The focus of the book is on the tension between two- and three-dimensional modes of expression, with special attention paid to sculpture and drawing. Structure and haptics characterize Judith P. Fischer’s work, and transformation is a recurring motif. The book includes extensive photographic documentation of individual works, spatial

views, and exhibitions. In addition, it explores Fischer’s creative process. In an interview, the artist provides insights into creative and developmental processes.

What changes when we religiously worship the toxic? In this era of catastrophe, can a cosmic connection be achieved through a cult of pollution? Toxic Temple is an artistic-philosophical quest to understand the current parlous state of the world. We offer our inner contradictions and destructive lusts as objects of worship. We enter wastelands instead of new territory, leaving space for artifacts, expressing solidarity with the factual. We encounter colorful assemblages of things that connect the known cosmos, tread the shaky ground of novel divinity,

The Moon has always been an object of immense fascination for humanity – and not just because of its prominence in the night sky. With its complex orbit, it is far closer to our planet than any other celestial body. Already in ancient Babylon, humans have studied the Moon and its relationship to the planets and constellations. Through incisive texts and illustrations using photos and computer simulations, this book explores the similarities and differences to other planets and their moons, the Moon’s

interactions with the Sun and the Earth, and interesting historical associations. In addition to scientifically accurate texts, it contains numerous large-format photographs and graphics that vividly explain the complex phenomenon of the Moon. Richly illustrated, it is designed for anyone interested in astronomy. Georg Glaeser Professor of Geometry, University of Applied Arts Vienna
