Editorial From residential homes to neighborhood centers, from residual spaces to squares, from streets to parks: our spring releases shine a spotlight on urban transformation. To understand the ways cities can change, we recommend occasionally changing your perspective—and scale. In The Liebling Haus, we direct our attention to Tel Aviv and take a closer look: this biography of a residential building in the White City introduces a collaborative Israeli-German project. It tells the story of the house’s construction for married European refugees Tony and Max Liebling in 1936, its loving restoration, and its new use as a public home. However, it is not only the buildings of a city that require care and attention, but also the spaces in between. Territorial Urbanism Now! argues for nothing less than a paradigm shift in the evolution of urban planning and a reorientation toward public and unbuilt spaces to withstand climate change. The compact volume WohnWissen impressively demonstrates that large changes start small. The Liebling Haus Sharon Golan / Ellen Kugler / Shira Levy Benyemini (eds.) The Liebling Haus in Tel Aviv was built in 1936 to designs by architect Dov Karmi for Tony and Max Liebling after they fled from Europe. With its bright plaster facades, deep balconies, clear proportions, and a layout tailored to the regional climate, it serves as a prime example of the locally adapted International Style that is typical of the White City of Tel Aviv. From 2015 to 2019, the building was extensively restored by Israeli and German planners, renovation experts, and craftspersons, reopening as a vibrant exhibition and community center. The Liebling Haus is supported and funded by the German Federal Government, the City of Tel Aviv, and the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Foundation. The book, published in three languages, tells the eventful history of the structure and gathers detailed historical materials about its architecture and residents. Current interviews, an atmospheric tour by Israeli photographer Yael Schmidt, and other documents showcase the new use of the Liebling Haus since its reopening. Territoriale Gerechtigkeit ist angesichts wachsender Ungleichheiten im Zugang zu und der Verteilung von Ressourcen (wieder) zu einer aktuellen Forderung und Aufgabe von Architektur, Raumplanung und Urbanismus geworden. GAM.15 – Territorial Justice widmet sich peripheren, ländlichen Räumen, die von diesem Diskurs bislang wenig beachtet wurden. Die Beiträge in GAM.15 aus Urbanismus, Landschaftsarchitektur, Regionalplanung, Soziologie und Geografie zeigen Räume in Transformation und stellen Ideen vor, wie räumliche Gerechtigkeit aussehen kann. In aktuellen Zustandsbeschreibungen benachteiligter Gebiete wird deutlich, dass jede Politik, die darauf abzielt, Ungerechtigkeit zu beseitigen oder zu bekämpfen, gut beraten ist, spezifisch räumlich-soziale – also territoriale – Blickwinkel einzunehmen und somit auf die Expertise von PlanerInnen und GestalterInnen angewiesen ist.

Territorial Justice

In the face of growing inequalities in access to and distribution of resources, territorial justice has (once again) become a current issue and task in the fields of architecture, planning, and urbanism. GAM.15 – Territorial Justice is dedicated to rural and peripheral spaces that have until now received little attention from this discourse. The contributions in GAM.15—coming from perspectives of urbanism, landscape architecture, regional planning, sociology, and geography—show spaces in transformation and present ideas for what forms spatial justice can take. Current descriptions of disadvantaged areas make clear that any policy aimed at eliminating or combating injustice would do well to take on specific socio-spatial—i.e. territorial—points of view, and as such to rely on the expertise of planners and designers.

Das neue Denken des Materials Holz als hochmoderner und veränderlicher Baustoff der Zukunft hat gerade erst begonnen. Eingebunden in umweltschonende Ressourcenkreisläufe zeigt sich seine Innovationskraft, wenn es als Material Bestandteil neuer technologischer Entwicklungen und hybrider Verwendungen wird, die aktuellen und komplexen architektonischen Aufgaben gewachsen sind. GAM.17 nimmt Holz in seiner Vielschichtigkeit und seinem architektonischen Potenzial neu in den Blick und stellt dabei konstruktive und gestalterische Konzepte vor, die die Möglichkeiten des Materials für eine klimafreundlichere Bauwirtschaft ausloten. Ergänzt wird dies durch einen Rückblick in die Geschichte des Holzbaus und seine ideologischen Verstrickungen, die die Weiterentwicklung des Baustoffs lange erschwert haben.

Transforming the Learning Environment in Architectural Education

We have only just started reimagining wood as a cutting-edge, versatile building material of the future. A component of environmentally friendly resource cycles, wood demonstrates its innovative potential when used in new technological developments and hybrid applications that are suited to complex, modern architectural tasks. GAM.17 takes a new look at wood—at its multi-faceted nature and architectural possibilities—and proposes building and design concepts that fully utilize the material’s potential for a more climate-friendly construction industry. This is further complemented by a look back at the history of building with wood and the ideological entanglements that have long stood in the way of the further development of wood as a building material. The Icelandic Concrete Saga Architecture and Construction (1847–1958) Sofia Nannini “Many would consider a country without building materials uninhabitable.” With these words, Minister of Industry Gylfi Þorsteinsson Gíslason opened Iceland’s first and only cement plant in 1958.
