Art In Action was assembled to create a space for students to bring awareness to the inequalities we face within our community. AIA campaigned at California State University San Bernardino to provide free menstruation products in restrooms across campus. Taking the first steps to achieve gender equality in restrooms on campus, Marlee Uggen and Jamie Valdez fabricated these boxes and installed them in the restrooms across the Visual Arts building at CSUSB.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR:
Hopefully, by the time you’re holding this ninth issue of Dotphotozine, the worst of the Coronavirus will be over, and we’ll be moving toward re-socializing. Being a photographer is often an exercise in optimism. We think our pictures can do good, expose injustice, or reveal beauty. Photographers get to point out visually what we think is overlooked, important, or just plain joyful and are gratified when others recognize this in our images. The solitary act of wandering with a camera or conceptualizing an image or project suits self-isolation, and allows us time to think, prioritize and look. We compose our images and reconsider them in the camera and then again during post production, and only then do we invite others to see them. The cerebral act of artmaking is continuous and fundamental to our process, whereas the physical act of artmaking may last only a few moments, hours, or days at a time. Social distancing and self-isolation create limitations which are often an advantage in photography. Maybe the limitations are imposed on a project or idea or concept, or maybe they are in the form of proximal limitations such as one’s home, backyard or neighborhood, providing a convenient (or unexpected) set of boundaries for us to work within. Under the best circumstances we can’t make pictures of everything or use every possible post-production effect, and so choices have to be made; particularly for young photographers, choices and limitations can lead to an intensity of vision and a focused mind. We see the fruit of such limitation in this ninth issue of Dotphotozine. The cover image by Chiyako Nelson is a domestic rendition of social distancing in the age of COVID-19. The subject and photographer are physically separated by glass, and beads of water suggest potentially infectious droplets of sputum. The man pictured seems young and healthy, but his slightly downcast eyes and sideways glance reveal an ambivalence to connect or acknowledge the photographer and viewers. The back cover image by Mary Flores shows a solitary figure walking to a cliff overlooking a vast, empty landscape. Whether this suggests the optimism of a wide open future or the pessimism of an abyss is up to the viewer. You’ll notice that in this issue I’ve include works by MFA students that are not photographs. I want to celebrate their art and use the magazine as a venue to showcase their visions and practices.

It’s a great privilege to work with young artists as they discover their visions and voices. As we work within the limits imposed by an unseen virus, I am comforted by the creativity and determination of our photography peers both young and not so young to make images worth taking the solitary time to consider.
