Italian machinery and equipment for date palm field operations
Edited by Francesco Garbati Pegna, Massimo Battaglia, Carlo Bergesio
Introduction The date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) can be considered the linchpin plant in desert and pre-desert agricultural systems. Its cultivation is most effective in protecting areas that are environmentally at risk. The species is highly adaptable to difficult soil and climate conditions, thanks to its evolution which has produced marked differentiation into numerous local cultivars and ecotypes. Each of these has been subjected to natural and anthropic selective pressure through the age-old history of cultivation in circumscribed distribution areas under extreme conditions. The Project “Improvement and valorization of date palms” in the Al Jufrah Oases, in Libya, funded by the Directorate General for Development Cooperation of the Italian Foreign Ministry and coordinated by the Istituto Agronomico per l’Oltremare in Florence, in collaboration with the Libyan Ministry of Agriculture, was launched within the framework of the agreement between Italy and Libya aimed at strengthening and further developing relations between the two countries. The overall objective of the project is to identify technical and economic measures intended to supporting and enhancing economically the date-production chain, promoting the social and economic development of the area. Within this Project special attention has been given to the possibility of improving productivity, safety and product quality in date palm cultivation through the use of modern tools and equipment: this pamphlet, which has been produced in cooperation with the Department of Agricultural and Forest Economics, Engineering, Sciences and Technology of the University of Florence, describes the main field operations that are carried out in date palm cultivation and the relevant agricultural equipment that can be used for best results, together with a list of highly experienced Italian manufacturers that produce and sell the referred machines or tools. The Istituto Agronomico per l’Oltremare (IAO) is an Italian Foreign Ministry institution with a vast experience in international development cooperation in the rural sector, which is already implementing several other bilateral agricultural and livestock programs in Libya. The Department of Agricultural and Forest Economics, Engineering, Sciences and Technology (DEISTAF) is a Department of the University of Florence, with robust competencies in tropical environment and rural development and longtime experience in date palm mechanization and post-harvest operations.

Sucker removal
Date palm spreads through suckers that most plants produce mainly within the first 20 years of life. These suckers must be collected when 4-5 years old, as they reach a diameter of about 25 cm (figure 1), either if needed for propagation or to allow best development and production of the mother plant (since they would become competitors). The best time for detaching is late spring, and an adaptation period is often needed to allow them to develop their own root system; this is done in nurseries, under shading nets, where the suckers are earthed up and constantly watered (figure 2) for a period of 6 to 12 months. Cutting is made with large sharpened iron chisels beaten with sledgehammers (figures 3 and 4). Once the sucker has been detached the external leaves are removed while the more internal ones are cut into half to reduce evapotranspiration and then bound up for transport (figure 5). A sucker average weight is 15-20 kg.

Plantation
Preliminary land clearing is needed to eliminate natural vegetation that could be growing on the selected area: this is done manually, with sickles and hoes or motorized backpack trimmers, or mechanically, with the use of tractors driving equipment of different size, depending on the required working capacity. If soil has hardpan layers they should be disrupted with rippers or subsoilers, driven by wheel or track-laying tractors (figure 6). If there is a high content of stones and rocks these must be removed with the use of excavators equipped with special buckets or with crawler tractors or bulldozers equipped with rake blades. Alternatively stones and rocks can be crushed or buried with the use of specific machinery. Leveling is done by bulldozers or by self-propelled or towed graders. Holes are made with excavators (figure 7) or by motorized manual drills or post-hole diggers carried by a tractor and connected to the p.t.o. (figure 8). The size of the holes is around 1 m3 (1 m x 1 m x 1 m). Springtime is the planting period: once the plant is placed in the hole the roots are covered manually, with the use of shovels (figure 9).

Irrigation and drainage
Water is important for date palm physiology and full production is assured only if it is fully available. Water is drawn from channels or pumped from wells and can be collected in basins or deposits before usage, especially if it is too cold; when the water available is too salted it is mixed with other of better quality. Different kind of pumps are used to put water under pressure and power is provided by electric or combustion engines and in some cases by sources of natural energy, such as sun or wind. Tanks can be made of cement, plastic or steel, but water can be also stored in basins dug in the ground and lined with geomembranes. Adduction and distribution pipes are usually of plastic (PVC or PE) or metal (galvanized steel or casted iron); in case of localized irrigation, driplines can be equipped with a large variety of drippers. Where excess water must be drained drain channel are dug; buried ducts or drains are rare.

Cropping operations
Both palm trees and alley crops benefit from inter-row tillage, necessary for weed control and burying of fertilizers. Where soils are saline, sandy and low in organic elements, tillage must be light and shallow and can be done with the use of disk ploughs or harrows, rotary hoes or tillers. Manure is applied with trailers and rakes or mechanical spreaders, while granular (mineral or organic) fertilizers are applied with centrifugal broadcasters. Organic fertilizers improve soil structure and contribute to mitigate the negative effects of salinity, therefore they should be mixed with the soil and not left on the surface, especially in dry and sunny environments, where even chemical fertilizers can be partially lost: in these cases subsequent harrowing or hoeing, or the use of spreaders that bury the fertilizer, should be considered. Weeds can be controlled also manually, with hoes, sickles or machete, or with backpack trimmers, or by the use of tractor driven vertical or horizontal axis mowers or by spraying of herbicides.

Phytosanitary Treatments
Fighting of main date palm parasites (date palm scale Parlatoria blanchardi, palm mite Oligonychus afrasiaticus, black borer Apate monachus and palm weevil Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) is usually done by spraying of chemicals. Spraying on large extensions can be made with airplanes or helicopters, while from-the-ground spraying can be done with backpack sprayers, if localized (figure 10) or with atomizers equipped with air blast sprayers or high pressure guns, mounted on wheelbarrows, pick-ups or trailers (figure 11). For high value plants (landscape, small groves, rare varieties) prevention of infestation and in some cases curing can be done by trunk injections of insecticide. Besides chemical insecticides, also physical means can be used to control pests, such as microwave frequencies that can kill insects at different development stages without damaging the plant (figure 12).

Pollination
The date Palm is a dioecious plant and, in order to obtain a good production, female plants have to be pollinated artificially. Traditionally this operation has been done manually, by inserting parts of the male inflorescence inside the female one, but nowadays the use of mechanical aids, such as blowers with pollen tanks and long pipes, is quite common. In this case the pollen must be previously collected (figure 13) and diluted with inert powders. Artificial pollination can be made from the ground, with blowers equipped with spears or rigid pipes (figure 14) long enough to reach the female flowers, or by reaching them with aerial platforms (see the section “lifting operations). Pollinating with the use of blowers is a less precise operation than the traditional one, but it’s much easier to carry out since in there is no need to tie the male and female inflorescences together (figure 15). Artificial pollination can be made easier with the use of facilitating equipment that helps to approach the flowers.

Fruits Thinning
Palm date is a very alternating plant therefore thinning of the clusters is a quite useful operation. Thinning is done when fruits begin growing in size (late spring) and only 8 to 10 clusters per plant should be left: 2-3 for each cardinal point. The cut of peduncles is made with the usual pruning tools: pneumatic or electric shears and chain or hand saws (figure 16).

Clusters arrangement and positioning of anti-breakage supports
To make harvesting easier the clusters have to be arranged under the leaves so, when growing up is size, fruits will not get caught in the foliage or damaged by thorns. When arranging the clusters it’s often necessary to support them with props, since without being sustained by the leafs, they could break off due to the weight of ripe fruits. This operation is typically manual and can be facilitated by the use of lifting devices when the infructescences are higher than 2 meters (see section “lifting operations”).
9.
Clusters coverage
To protect the fruits from adverse weather (date quality is affected by rain during the ripening period) and from insects, during the end of the ripening phase, the clusters can be covered with plastic or cardboard caps (figure 17). For each mature palm about 1 m2 of coverage sheet is needed.

10. Harvest Dates are collected manually, one by one or as a whole cluster, depending on the variety and on the ripening phase: this implies the need to reach the top of the same plant for several times. In order to make this operation faster and to reduce fruit losses, both the arrangement of clusters under the leaves and a regular cleaning of the stem are essential. When harvesting, the picker stands on the ground or reaches the clusters with the use of a ladder or by climbing up the stem, depending on the palm height, and gleans the ripe dates, depositing them in a basket, or cuts the stalks and lowers the whole infructescences with a rope or drops them directly on the ground (figure 18). There are no mechanical date harvesters but just aids such as ladders or aerial platforms that allow the workers to reach the fruits more quickly, reducing fatigue and risks. The fruits of lower quality can be collected from the ground after shaking the whole plant or only the clusters with vibrating arms similar to those used to harvest olives: also in this case it is necessary to lay sheets or tarpaulins on the ground, under the trees. In very extensive plantations, if soil conformation allows it, dates can be collected from the ground with mechanic collectors, as the ones used for picking up hard-shelled fruits.

12. Transport Transport is a common operation to all agricultural activities and that’s true also for date cultivation where vegetable parts, fertilizers, machinery and equipment, together with the harvested fruits, must be moved within and out of the farm. The most common and versatile piece of equipment is the agricultural trailer that, when soil is flat and sandy, is generally endowed of two axles, but for minor transportation needs also buckets carried by tractors, in front or at the back, can be used. If large amounts of materials have to be transported instead, and bins are needed in different places at the same time, it’s possible to disengage the tractor by using hook-lift trailers. Also self-propelled transporters can be very useful: these machines have a minor transport capacity but are very mobile and versatile. For short-range moving of materials an interesting option is constituted by walking crawler dumpers. Where soil is rough or difficult to tackle, trailers should have its own driving wheels connected to the tractor PTO. Machinery/ equipment Trailers

13. Tractors Most of the machines described in the previous paragraphs must be carried or trailed, and in some cases moved, by a tractor, which is a prime mover with lifting and towing devices, mechanical power take-off and hydraulic power distributors. Agricultural tractors can have two or four wheels or tracks. Two wheel tractors (moto-cultivators) have a low power, usually less than 10 kW (figure 21), while four wheel tractors start from about 15 kW and can reach up to 200 kW and more. Crawler tractors can also include self-moved wheelbarrows, low power machines normally equipped with a bucket or a platform, which can also be fitted with lifting system, hydraulic distributors and hydraulic power take-off. All operations previously described, except for those necessary for land clearing and soil preparation, do not require much power, therefore small or medium-sized farms would need tractors in the range of 35 to 50 kW (figure 22); in larger farms instead the power need will be determined by the required working capacity. Standing the prize only marginally higher, four-wheel drive is preferable to the single one for the major versatility of the machines and also for higher performance on sandy soils.

14. Lifting Operations Some of the most important date palm farming operations, such as pollination, harvesting, thinning, coverage and arrangement of clusters, pruning of both trunk and leaves, benefit from the possibility of an easy access to the top of the tree. Despite the availability of low cost labor in many date palm growing areas, making climbing operation easier contributes to increase work productivity and product quality at the same time safeguarding operator’s safety. One interesting device that can be used to climb up the trunk is the “palm bicycle(figure 23): the best version has metal bands that embrace the stem, allowing the operator to proceed safely without damaging the plant. The stem needs to be clean and as smooth as possible. The use of crampons should not be allowed because they damage the stem affecting its physiological balance and mechanical stability. The simplest and most common means to facilitate the access to the top of the palm tree are: lifting aids (crampon, straps,...), even if some are harmful to the plant manually handled ladders: useful for palms with a stem height up to 4-5 m harvesting carts: useful for heights in the range of 4-5 m self-moved ladders (figure 24): for heights ranging from 4 to 10 m aerial platforms (figure 25): for heights above 6 m Platforms can be classified according to the type of movement and elevation: Self-propelled with telescopic and/or articulated boom Self-propelled track-type with telescopic and/or articulated boom (figure 26) Self-propelled vertical with pantograph boom Truck or tractor-mounted with telescopic and/or articulated boom (figure 27) Towed on trailer with telescopic and/or articulated boom Vertical hydraulic column lifts

At the young age of 20, in the year 1910, Giovanni Carraro builds the first multifunctional agricultural machine. In brief he develops his smith workshop into an industrial plant which manufactures sowing machines and, afterwards, traditional tractors. In 1960 Antonio, the youngest of his six sons, founds the company "Antonio Carraro di Giovanni": the first single-axle tractor "Scarabeo" is developed. Currently, Antonio Carraro opts for a niche production of tractors, from 20 to 100 hp, with four driving wheels. Since 1979 the strength point of the company is the R&D (Research and Development) department, source of projects to develop innovative and original products. Thanks to the experience and the heritage of technical solutions which the firm has acquired in time, Antonio Carraro increased its market niches from specialised agriculture to civil sector (business unit Groundcare: green maintenance, roadways, urban cleaning.) Antonio Carraro is an historical family business, still leader in the production of multifunctional tractors with alternative and innovative solutions dedicated to market niches. Antonio Carraro's mission is to provide the best solution to operators who work in the specialised agriculture field, even with extreme working conditions and in the groundcare and roadways sectors. They believe that customers and collaborators community, together with work ethics are their successful key.

Nardi's history is a series of innovations that stretches along as much as four generations. A 115-year-old history that began in 1895 with the first reversible plough traded in Italy by the company's founder, Francesco Nardi, up until the latest product of Nardi's catalogue: a specially-designed plough for areas of the world potentially affected by desertification. Nardi operates in 85 countries around the world, with a special focus on efficient services and after-sales support. “Implements for professional farming is indeed the new slogan of the industrial group, which provides a comprehensive product range for professional farming, from ploughs to seed drills. To support this growth, our Research & Development department continues to work on improving the quality of our products, which are increasingly manufactured with special micro alloy steels, providing more than double the resilience of normal steel. With these premises, today Nardi's range is among the most exhaustive ones currently available on the market and covers machines to work, prepare and sow the soil: ploughs, cultivators, disk harrows, hoes, machines for vines and fruit trees and mechanical and pneumatic seed drills. These include our new series of NX-SX reversible ploughs and our brand new FAST Combined Cultivator", a machine developed to satisfy the increased need to deal with cuts on processing costs whilst still providing an adequate preparation of the soil. Foreign markets represent 45% of the group's revenue and 55% comes from its domestic market. Among the various ranges marketed by the group, 15% of the company's turnover is represented by seed drills, 40% by ploughs, 20% by hoes and 25% by disk harrows. It seems strategic to intensify partnerships with large tractor manufacturers, as these address our same end users. Moreover, collaboration in terms of distribution network is increasingly oriented towards customer retention.

VMA manufactures advanced, reliable, high-performance and user-friendly machinery. These are only a few of the reasons behind the success story of VMA - a manufacturer employing specialists with over three decades' experience. The starting point of our company strategy coincides with the initiative of one man: Giampietro Vitali, then joined by a team of experts able to identify and meet the special requirements of crops such as vines and olive groves. As early as in the Sixties, Mr. Vitali poured his craftsman's creativity into a new industrial enterprise, starting a successful low-volume sprayer manufacturing business. Besides bringing to the new business his know-how and expertise, Mr. Vitali also decided that the company's focus should be on achieving qualitative excellence and guaranteed reliability for each manufactured product. This is why every production phase, from die construction all the way to final testing, is carried out and rigorously qualitychecked internally. The result is a range of top quality products, appreciated even by the most demanding customers and market leaders.
