Director After narrowing down a list of about fifty directors, I chose three—Lasse Hallström, Terry Gillam, and Elia Kazan—to focus on and examine before choosing one to base the film festival on. Once I had chosen the three directors, I watched one main film from each to further investigate the theme, story, and style. All are very great directors, but I chose to study Hallström since I resonated more with his films and style.

L a s s e Hall strö m Lasse Hallström is a Swedish film director, first known for directing A B BA's music videos and soon became a feature film director. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director twice for his films My Life as a Dog (1985) and The Cider House Rules (1999). After his international success with My Life as a Dog, Hallström moved into directing American movies. His first notable success being What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) starring Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio. Following his success with The Cider House Rules, Hallström directed Chocolat (2000), starring Johnny Depp, Juliette Binoche, and Judi Dench. The film was a critical and box-office success, earning Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Academy Award nominations, including one for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Binoche and Dench won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively at both the European Film Awards and the Screen Actors' Guild awards. His films mostly revolve around the common theme of finding oneself and discovering one’s purpose or passion in life. I believe Hallström is worthy of a film festival, his films are widely known, interesting, and thought-provoking. I also love the idea behind Chocolat and The Hundred-Foot Journey of breaking the ice of somewhat racial barriers with food. That being said, Chocolat, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The HundredFoot Journey, The Cider House Rules, Safe Haven, and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen seemed perfect to feature at the festival.

Visual Approach The visual approach for the Wanderful Film Festival will be rustic and down-to-earth with natural textures and colors. The visuals will be playful and bright yet sophisticated, with 1–2 pops of color for each deliverable. HallstrÜm's films are so rich with color and Scenery. Color is often used to show a change in and/or a challenge to the protagonist/character based on their outfit color. The supporting characters with brighter, bolder colors are often seen as adversaries or tempters to the other characters/main characters.
Photography or animation A mix of photography and illustration may be best suited to the festival. A simple illustration on a photographic background will bring a playful and rustic mood to the festival deliverables. Trailer The trailer will be made from a collection of stills from the films with their titles and then reveal the title of the festival. The reverse may also work well with the festival title followed by stills from the films that will be shown. Target Audience Young adults who feel lost in the world and seek their passion in life between the ages of 20 and 30. Competition The competition would be independent film festivals, outdoor festivals and drive-in theaters. Comcast hosts an annual drive-in festival for charity which provides viewers with entertainment for a good cause.

Deliverables After watching Hallstrom’s films and starting to design and brand the festival I began to pursue the traveling aspect of each film. Along the lines of designing, I focused so much on the vehicles and the landscape shots I began to lose sight of the characters and the sentimental and romantic qualities of his films. Once I realized this, it became slightly easier to focus and design, letting the stories and films come to life with faces and emotions rather than the still landscapes. Although after further exploration a simple landscape became more meaningful to the theme of the festival and supported the vision of the director.

P os te r The Films of L asse Hallström
After a lot of trial-and-error, I finally designed a poster that spoke to the essence of the film festival. At first, I wanted to focus on the scenery and landscapes of the films, but the quality and format of the film scenes were a far cry from a festival poster. Then I sought to focus on the characters since they too are a big part of Hallström’s films; the stories are so simple yet the characters show such great emotion and depth. But I was still drawn to the landscapes and tried a combination of character portraits and scenery. Finally, I went back to the drawing board in a search for photographs of the locations of the films. The final poster image was the right size, quality and focus for the film festival poster.

Lo c ati o n Sh ots I originally started looking for location photographs for the festival at movie theaters. After further investigation of the director, his films, and the overall festival a more open location seemed best. I chose to use an outdoor field and brand the festival as an outdoor festival.

The program tells the history of the festival, a brief biography and filmography of the director, Lasse Hallstrรถm, and more information on the films that will be shown at the festival. Lasse Hallström Lasse Hallström is a Swedish film director, first known for directing A BBA's music videos and soon became a feature film director. He was born on June 2, 1946 in Stockholm, Sweden. His film style involves small town life which is usually disturbed by an outside force, in most cases strangers who move into town. This can be seen in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, a new girl moves into town after her grandmother's camper breaks down causing Gilbert to reevaluate his life. Chocolat starring Johnny Depp, Juliette Binoche, and Judi Dench, is about a single mother who moves to a quiet French town and opens a Mayaninspired chocolate shop during Lent. This causes a stir among the town since the new chocolate shop tempted the people into breaking Lent. I really love this idea of breaking the ice of somewhat racial barriers with food, in this case, chocolate. His 2014 film, The Hundred-Foot Journey, in which an Indian family flees India for safety and settle France. They just so happen to set up their new restaurant right across the street from a French Michelin-star restaurant who seeks another star.

This is the annotated process journal for the film festival and deliverables inspired by the films of Lasse Hallström. After narrowing down a list of about fifty directors, I chose three—Lasse Hallström, Terry Gillam, and Elia Kazan—to focus on and examine before choosing one to base the film festival on. Once I had chosen the directors, I watched one main film from each to further investigate the theme, story, and style. All are very great directors, but I chose to study Hallström since I resonated more with his films and style. I was drawn to the beautiful scenery and locations in all of his films which became the inspiration for the festival’s visual system.
