BACKPACKING a beginner’s guide
SO, YOU WANT TO BACKPACK? Where to start Getting started backpacking can seem like a daunting prospect--there are a lot of outdoors survival skills that a lot of people don’t have! However, a few basic tips can greatly increase your safety out on the trail and ensure an amazing time, allowing you to enjoy your time in nature free of worry or incident.
PART 1: THE GEAR
THE TENT Even though it’s tempting to get a nice, roomy tent, when you are backpacking remember you are carrying everything on your back! Try to find the smallest, lightest tent possible.
THE BACKPACK Using a high-quality backpack that fits you will make a huge difference in your comfort level. We recommend shopping at an outdoors store where a sales associate can help measure you for the perfect fit.
THE WATER BOTTLE Although some people use tablets to clean their water, we recommend buying a water bottle with a filter. It saves time on the trail so you can drink as soon as you find a water source.
THE STOVE This is an important choice, as it cooks your food! Find a lightweight stove, and practice putting it together and using it before your first trip. Also, as always, the smaller the better.
THE REST A few other small items will be helpful on the trail--a small spade to bury your personal waste, a pocket knife, a length of nylon rope, a lighter, and small lightweight utensils will improve your trip a lot.
PART 2: THE TRAIL PLANNING YOUR ROUTE If possible, try to find accounts written by someone else who has hiked that trail before. Check to make sure there are water sources on the trail so you can refill your water bottle, and remember to bring a map of the trail with you.
FINDING A CAMPSITE You need to camp at least 300 feet away from the trail. Try to find a flat area--you may be able to find a campsite someone used before you! Take the time to clear your campsite of branches and rocks for a more comfortable night.
PACKING UP YOUR SITE When you leave your campsite in the morning, remember to clean up everything. Bury your personal waste and make sure you leave the area cleaner than you found it.
