Consumerism and New Products:
1) The new items are a huge cat’s meow! Who knew we would end up with products line the “Victor Victorola!” A phonograph! How jake is that! To everyone who isn’t excited about this, you slay me 2) Have you heard of all these beats? Talk about having a radio! It’s so nifty and while not everyone needs to want one. I think being about to have one is earful. 3) This is so balled up! These new items are so expensive! A radio? A phonograph? Greeting cards? The telephone? I don’t have enough money for all these. 4) Thank goodness for credit! Or I wouldn’t be able to have all these items. Don’t know from nothing why people don’t get these! Level with me, everyone wants them.
Labor Unions 1) This is balled up. Why can’t we keep the war labor board going like they did in the 1918’s. What saps. The “American plan” is not the cat’s meow. Labor unions are nifty. And I agree with them. 2) We need to bring Labor Unions back, for all those saps that don’t agree then beat it. Labor unions were copacetic 2 years before. Why aren’t they now? Labor unions were so great, they had the AALD for a reason. 3) I’m glad that Labor Unions went. Everyone just beefs about it. The war time wage standard was too high. I‘m jake with them having destroyed the union movement. Earful with all this. 4) All these saps don’t seem to realize that labor unions only worked nifty in the past 2 years because of WWI. Ab-‐so-‐lute-‐ly the war and labor unions went great together. But they went away. Leave it that way.

Prohibition Editorial Most middle class white women begin starting social reform groups for the prohibition of alcohol because they believe it is tearing apart their family. They also believe that it is causing them to have financial problems and become more violent towards their family. Most states agreed with this ban on alcoholic drinks because they see the effect that it can have on people in their lives. But this also caused people to purchase alcohol illegally from private shops or people bought it with a prescription and used it illegally. Some people even made the alcohol in their own home, which also became popular Some people believe there shouldn’t be prohibition because of the amount of alcohol that sells and how much of a demand it is. People don’t see the effect that it has on families and what it can cause some people to do. With prohibition there are no accidents that occur because of drunk driving which is one of the main causes of death. But also there are the downs, like people getting alcohol illegally or getting it prescribed to them because they want a drink, but they use it for other purposes. But overall for the timeframe that prohibition was set in I think it was put to good use to show people the effects with and without alcohol. Also I think that it could have helped more people to realize the effects of their drinking and that they might need to cool down on it. But either way with or without the law there were still problems like selling alcohol in bars and private places, which were not found.
Evolution Editorial Evolution isn’t such a bad thing, now is it? Some people are questioning this because of a former teacher being said to have been teaching evolution to children in school. The teacher, John T. Scopes, is being trailed in July. With it being said that he shouldn’t have been teaching evolution with the passing of statute in March in Tennessee stating that it was prohibited to teach in public schools the theories contrary to accepted interpretation of the biblical account of human creation. Now I’ve never been one to judge about whether we came to be human and were made from the events that happened because of evolution. Or whether the almighty being, God, came to earth and created Adam and Eve and all that we have and have come to known. It’s a very sensitive topic. Since it involves religion, which can impact how a person lives their life. Evolution has come to be an explanation for how we human being came to earth. It is said that evolution likely began in the late Cretaceous, about 85 million year ago, by genetic studies and no later than the Paleocene by the fossil record from 55 million years ago. Apparently evolution goes to say that the family Hominidae, or the great apes, diverged around 15-20 million years ago. Later the gorilla and chimpanzee diverged from the lineage leading to the genus Homo. It also lastly states that, us, human today, came from the species Australopithecines some 2.3 to 2.4 million years ago in Africa. That’s a lot to take in. Especially when Christians have been saying that their God has always been here. That he created the earth and the sea and all the animals we see today. That he created Adam and Eve, which was the beginning of us humans. If you look at evolution compared to religious belief of Christians, there is a huge different. One is very scientific and one is very religious and followed with belief. Is that why this trial is happening? Because people are worried about the beliefs of their child. And whether they are going to be changed by the public teaching of evolution in schools? With such heavy beliefs involved in evolution and whether we choose to believe that’s how we came to be, this is a huge case. Many would say they are glad its such an important case. Many people are even coming to Tennessee to see how this case panes out. To see what happens,. John T. Scopes may have thought teaching Evolution wasn’t too big of a deal yet many people seem to think so. I don’t see the problem in look at both the scientific reasoning and the religious reasoning of how we came to be. But its easy to see why everyone is taking this so seriously.

Two More Blacks Found Lynched
Last night around 3:00 am three white men jumped a black man and his grandson while walking home from a neighbors house and lynched them in their front yard. This morning another black man, Jarod Simons, and his grandson, Gregory Simons, were found hanging from the tree in their front yard. The police say that the three white men who jumped the old man and the young boy got drunk at around 3:00 am at the local speak easy and decided to go lynching. The three gentlemen are in the hands of the police but it is said that they will not be facing punishment. Jarod and Gregory Simons were at their neighbor’s house two doors down playing some jazz music while the young boys played. They left the house at around 3:00 am according to the neighbor. Shortly after the two were brutally beaten, had multiple knife wounds, had multiple burn marks, multiple broken bones, and finally were hung from a tree to end the brutal lynching of two black people. Jarod Simons was 68 years old and was a talented jazz player who dedicated his life to help other black men and women from all the harsh treatment of white people they endured day to day. Jarod is taking care of his four grandkids because their parents unfortunately had to endure the same brutal death as they did. Gregory Simons was seven years old, the oldest of the four grandkids. Police say he did not suffer as much as his grandfather because he died from the massive beating that took place before the worst of the horrible things the three white men did to them. Jarod and Gregory Simons are just one of the many lynching’s that have taken place just these past couple months. Many other unfortunate black men and women have suffered the same treatment by white people. Blacks are under mass amounts of racial prejudices every day due to white people. If something is not done soon groups like the KKK will continue to treat black men and women in this harsh way for many years to come.
The Sacco and Vanzetti Trial The Sacco and Vanzetti Trial was a very controversial case that had occurred in April of 1920 because two men were called guilty to something people know he didn’t do. Nikola Sacco and his friend Bartolommeo Vanzetti, who were both Italian immigrants and anarchists, were both accused of the murder of a paymaster and a guard at a factory. They did not commit this crime but they were accused because of what they believe. The case was weak but they were unable to secure a written alibi, and they were carrying guns, which made them more inclined to get arrested. During the case the Judge called them both anarchists bastards, and they were both sent to death in the electric chair even though he wasn’t sure who really did the murder. They took 6 years to try to get a fair retrial, and they were put to death in August 1927 even without getting a fair say or getting to retrial about the case. The people figured out later that the reason they were really arrested wasn’t because they were at the scene of the crime with guns, but because they subscribed to anarchist newspapers. The judge believed that anarchists, and foreigners deserved no consideration or the right to trial because of who they were and what they believed in. Even many years later Historians still argue their right was violated but the judge of the case never admitted that he was wrong to what he did. He told them they ought to hang, and not because they were at the scene of the crime but because he doesn’t like anarchists and he believes they should not have the right to trial by jury or have a fair say.
Jazz Becoming The New “Thing”
The Harlem Renaissance and jazz music is spreading quicker and quicker as the black population spreads more and more through the nation. The “Negro Nation” is spreading more and more through out the nation each day. So because of this jazz music has become a big hit all across the nation. Negro men sit out on the street and just play away the sweet sound and catchy tune of jazz music. Ever since slaves were no longer slaves there has been a mass amount of the Negro population moving up through the north. People are calling it “The Great Migration”. Most of the Negro population has and is moving into the northern major cities like, Detroit, New York City, etc., so they can find work and support their families. For many Negro men and women finding work is hard considering that no one wants to hire them and also considering that not everyone was in favor of freeing slaves. So just because Negros are free, it doesn’t mean that the mistreatment has gone with it. So the Harlem Renaissance has it’s good and it’s bad from jazz music to the “Great Migration”. So all in all the Harlem Renaissance is full of interesting events and we are in very interesting times now.

Women’s Rights There was a woman back in the 1920’s who shared her story with us about how life was and how it changed for her because of the 19th amendment. She told us her life story, and how she became independent instead of having to have someone support her. Overall women were tired of not being able to be independent in their lives so she recalled an event when a women’s suffrage movement was started in 1848. She said it was a movement to give women more rights than they had before because they were unable to do most things that men could do. She said finally in 1920 the right for women to vote was granted and that’s when things started to get better for her, and women all around. Soon she told the story on how she was able to do anything and get a job and buy her own car and she was on her own. She told us how finally she was able to get her own job and have her own pocket money to save up for whatever she wanted to buy. She also exclaimed how she was able to buy her own car and how she felt independent and like she was a stronger woman than she was before. Soon she told about how there were woman who became more respected and admired around the world. Soon she said women created their own clothing line that she was able to purchase with her money and having a good body image became important in the society and she tried to keep one. This was the story about how a woman wanted to be more independent and was successful because she joined the movement for women’s suffrage, which eventually changed how women were viewed in the societies and the government.
