TALES OF THREE CITIES [ARC3113] ASSIGNMENT 2A: JOURNAL ON URBAN SKETCHES AND PHOTOGRAPHS Delaney Tang Hui Ying 0312089
HOMOGENEIT Y PINNACLE | SINGAPORE
A sense of wholeness evoked through the uniformity of the repetitive pieces which together, form the building faรงade. Despite the fragmented parts, the large quantity of similar units eventually creates an identity for a neighbourhood of social inclusion in the multicultural societies.
DIVERS IT Y CUPPAGE ROAD | SINGAPORE
From the different materials of pavement, distinctive architectural style of buildings with varying colours of finishing, to the choice of species for plantation along the street, they present a rich diversity of stories which lay behind the city.
HORIZONTALIT Y ORCHARD ROAD | SINGAPORE
The movement pattern of Orchard Road conveys a sense of horizontality in a linear motion. The one directional vehicular pathway is extended sideway into few lanes while wide pedestrian pathways are laid on its both sides. The clear separation between vehicular and pedestrian use enhances the traffic safety and at the same time correspond to the pedestrian friendly concept.
INFORMALIT Y ORCHARD ROAD & CAIRNHILL ROAD INTERSECTION | SINGAPORE
The activity node formed at the intersections between roads speaks a sense of informality. It is a point where communication and interaction occur as the speed of movement slows down and stopped. Permeability is enhanced when the casual movement with intense activities happen across the indoor and outdoor, the vehicular and pedestrian, as well as the natural and built environment.
PARALLEL ORCHARD ROAD | SINGAPORE
The sense of parallel emerged from the orientation and position of buildings and trees which strategically located linearly along the street. The linear path formed between them forces pedestrian traffic moving in a parallel motion with the greens and built form. The correspondence between human, nature and built form stresses horizontal layering which presented with a varying rhythm of height.
COLLAGE ORCHARD ROAD| SINGAPORE
The combination of street furniture, greens and buildings illustrates a collage of architecture, landscape and art. The rectilinear built form and the organic outline of nature exhibit a diversity of geometry along the street. The street statue brings out a characteristic of energy which fortifies and lives up the dynamic atmosphere.
JUXTAPOS IT ION ORCHARD ROAD | SINGAPORE
The distinct built forms along the street speak a state of juxtaposition, where the traditional octagonal Chinese pagoda style building meets the contemporary architecture with outrageous and innovative retail design which stresses on fluidity. The contradiction is further emphasized by contrast in material used as well as the building orientation which faces oppositely to each other.
SEPARAT ION ION ORCHARD | SINGAPORE
The sense of separation created by the series of steps dividing two pedestrian pathways at different levels of height. The gradually increasing height formed by the steps magnifies the importance and significance of the space, intentionally drawing the pedestrian into the commercial area. It is also a means to distinguish different usage and function of the space, physically.
MULTIVALENC E MANDARIN ORCHARD| SINGAPORE
The broad open space attached to different streets and buildings functions for a mix and compatible purpose. It demonstrates a transition from varying personal domains into a common territory where public activity takes place. The variation of height and scale in comparison between human, trees and buildings as well as the multidirectional movement pattern also enhance the sense of multivalence over the street.
SUPERIORIT Y ORCHARD CENTRAL| SINGAPORE
The grand scale of the building presents a sense of superiority. Its physical geometry highlights on the mass-void relationship of subtracting form which offers an open space for public activities and strategic visual standpoint for street views from a high angle.
TECHNOLOGY MASS RAPID TRANSIT| SINGAPORE
Technology has brought in to address the issue of population density. The elevated, on ground and underground circulation serves different layers of movement pattern that developed vertically. The operation of rail lines has formed linkage and network connection between nodes as well as landmarks in different districts. It serves as a tool for integration of surrounding as a whole.
SECURIT Y OPHIR ROAD| SINGAPORE
A sense of security presented through the raised pedestrian walkway which laid detached from the vehicular road by having fencing and tree row volume as barriers. The offset of walkway pavement further away from the main road boosts the safety for pedestrian. Furthermore, directional and warning signage enhances the accessibility and usability along the street.
TRANS IT ION PINNACLE| SINGAPORE
Horizontally, the sense of transition presented through conversion of activities across the buildings and open space. In contrast, the gradual changes in height from the rows of fencing, lamp posts, trees, and eventually to the blocks of high rises intensify the transition in a vertical form.
CONTINUAT ION ORCHARD CENTRAL | SINGAPORE
A wire sculpture installed above a flight of linear staircase welcomes the atmosphere upon reaching to a roof garden at the 12th floor. Its reflections on the relatively tall walls illustrate a sense of continuation, lifting the eyes to look up at the sky.
FRAME BAYFRONT | SINGAPORE
A confine boundary has formed by the hard edges of building mass surrounding a water body. The separation between the hard and soft elements centralizes the focal point towards the water body, making a significant share of activities in the center.
DISCIPLINE MANHATTAN| NEW YORK
The sense of discipline evoked through the orderly manner of movement pattern formed in the midst of the chaotic atmosphere. The grid system of its spatial layout displays the complex simplicity of an urban planning. The vehicular pathway running in one-way eases in controlling the traffic as well as for safety issue.
COEXIST ENC E MANHATTAN| NEW YORK
The state of coexistence evoked through the broad vehicular pathway in contrast with the compact building blocks along its sides. The densely positioned built forms allows void to be established clearly between each of the sets. The void could be served as both divider and connector depending on the point of views from different scale of vision.
MAGNIF IC ENC E MANHATTAN| NEW YORK
The sense of magnificence presented through the grand scale of built forms in comparison with the humble height of human and vehicle. The building faรงade design is emphasized on verticality with the stacking of horizontal elements, by which the contrast to human scale is magnified, thus creating an impressive effect travelling along the street.
REJUVENAT ION CHINATOWN| MANHATTAN
The choice of bright and contrasting colours applied on the building faรงade as well as the varying rhythm of building height carry a sense of rejuvenation over the atmosphere. The Chinese-traditional-style decorations implemented on the building have also enlightened the busy car thoroughfare.
CONNEC T ION MANHATTAN BRIDGE | NEW YORK
The linkage between Manhattan and Brooklyn conveys the aspect of connection. The outspread of bridge from the urban layout of Manhattan to another district presents a stabilizer joining the dispersal and spreading of development. The horizontal built form is balanced by its supportive structure which grows vertical upwards.
