Debating Tiverton
A number of our Year 9 students participated in the D Grade section of the Debating Association of Victoria’s competition. The boys were required to research and then formulate debates on a number of topical and contentious issues throughout Terms 2 and 3. Participating in this competition meant heading out, on often a cold winter’s night, to Camberwell Boys Grammar. The boys also gave up many a lunchtime to prepare. As well as the DAV weekly competition we had a number of boys participate in the ACC Debating Competition held in Standing: Damien Taranto, Lewis Di Stefanis, George Vlahogiannis, Theodore Siriopoulos, Ms Cate McIlroy August at Parade College. Year 10 Debating
The Year 10 debating team fought hard throughout the year, only to be pipped at the post in our final debate. Our hard work and determination wasn’t enough to overcome the strong Wesley College opposition. Arguing that “Australian’s DNA shouldn’t be kept on a national data base”, we gritted our teeth and pulled
Standing: Mrs Christine Thompson, Ilia Roytberg, Jordan Dalgliesh, Nick Kent, Damian Li, Ms Marisa Di Giacomo Seated: Steven Ward, Ben Stott, Daniel Martin, Paul Casey Absent: Ryan Moody, Nick Rodway, Matt Taylor out all stops. In a debate that could have gone either way, we were delivered the devastating result of a one point loss. Hearts were broken, dreams were shattered, but our De La pride remained intact! With two more years ahead of us we’re sure to build on this year’s successful season which provided us with topics ranging from the national internet filter to animal protection and the environment. The fantastic efforts from Paul Casey, Ryan Moody, Jordan Dalgliesh, Ilia Roytberg, Nicholas Rodway and Matthew Taylor contributed to our great results. A special thank you to Ms Di Giacomo and Mrs Thompson for organizing and coordinating our debates. With this experience we look forward to being very competitive in 2011. Senior Debating
Having debated together for the best part of five years, De La Salle’s Year 12 team — Ben Stott, Daniel Martin, Steven Ward, Damian Li and Nick Kent — were again proud to represent the College this year. We took part in a regional competition of five debates against local schools, winning four of them. Three of these debates were ‘secret topics’ which gave us only an hour to prepare. Our efforts got us through to the semi-finals, a result we hope can be bettered by the Year 10 team! We also debated a visiting team from La Salle College, Perth, in two debates, winning both. The team would like to thank Mrs Thompson and Ms Martin for their guidance over the years, and we wish De La debaters all the best in the years to come. Nick Kent
