While attending a Pageant casting for NAM with Jailene and MaryJane (Two new pageant contestants that we'll be writing about later) I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Miss Brandi Urban and her fabulous mother Crystal. After only a few seconds, it was clear that Brandi who's 17 born March 31st, with had a personality brighter than any shinning star, and we just had to ask her for an interview. Brandi graciously agreed and De Lauraine Magazine could not be happier. We asked Brandi a few questions and these are her replies,

DLM: Do you have sister's or brothers?

Brandi: "I have two, 22 year old Brothers And a 21 year old brother and sister. They aren't twins I promise. My family is very mixed!"

DLM: What made you decide to do pageants?

Brandi: "I got the letter in the mail to do the pageant when I was in 6th grade and I was super shy. My brothers and sister always were doing great things like music and sports. I wanted to be different and to gain confidence, so I went into the open call and I fell in love with everything I was hearing. I went to the state pageant a few months later and I did my personal introduction in state and that was the moment that I found myself on the stage and I never wanted it to end."

6

DLM: What did your family think? Brandi: "My mom was the one who handed me the letter when I got home from school and she laughed and said, "You want to be a beauty queen?" And two hours later at dinner I told her I wanted to do the pageant. My parents had no idea what to expect. They were scared for me, because they didn't think I would fit in. They expected Honey Boo boo and all that, but once we went to the open call and talked to Matt (the state director) they felt a little better. It wasn't until I got up on the stage for the first time did they completely feel better about the pageant.

DLM: Is your family supportive? Brandi: "Nobody has been more supportive in everything I have done than my family. My mom was use to football and wrestling, but when it came time for my pageant weekend she was nothing short of amazing. She has been my inspiration since day one." "My dad was also very amazing with everything. He was always there to make me feel like a princess as we walked across the stage, and always telling me how beautiful I really am. My Bubbie (Grandma) has been there as my dress maker/fixer and even though she can't always be at the pageant she is cheering me on from home. My family has always been amazing and we are always there for each other I am the luckiest girl in the world."

DLM: Is it hard to be in pageants? Brandi: "I can't say that being in a pageant is easy because, it isn't. You have to work hard and always have your head held high. Confidence I would say is one of the hardest things for many people to keep. Being in a pageant there is always going to be people that seem to think they are better or that pageants are "a waste of time", but for me the pageant has become a way of life and I have learned to work for what I love and I have met so many people along they way that have made it all worth it, and your feet get use to the heels!"

DLM: Are there any negatives to being in pageants?

Brandi: "I think the only negative thing about pageants is that when you say "Pageants" people just assume fake tans and big hair, or in some cases ditsy girls. People don't understand that not all pageant systems are like that. So many people don't believe that I do pageants because, I'm not "skinny" and that's not what NAM is about. Plus there are other pageants like Pure American Pageant that is Christian based and it's about inner beauty not what you look like on the outside.

7

DLM: How much work goes to being in a pageant?

Brandi: " I'd say between my mom and I, we do something pageant related at least 5 time a week. Weather it is planning outfits, adding up my community service hours, promoting National American Miss, or just hanging out with my sister queens. It does take up a lot of our time, but it's doesn't ever seem like work anymore!"

DLM: Who is your role model?

Brandi: "My mom has always been my biggest role model followed closely by mom dad. My mom has always been a "bigger" girl, but she never let what people say about her stop her from following her dreams. She has an amazing voice and if there is a stage, she is sure to be singing at least one song. She taught me to be myself and love who I am. My dad is a hard worker and he has taught me that when you want something you work for it. If you fail don't ever give up just try again! My parents both have been a huge reason behind why I started being commuted to being involved in my community. They know how important it is to help those around you.

DLM: What's your favorite color?

Brandi: "My favorite color is pink! I love how bright it is and it goes with EVERYTHING!"

DLM: What's your favorite food?

Brandi: "My favorite food it Strawberries! There the best in the middle of summer. My favorite are from my local Saturday market!"

DLM: What are your goals?

Brandi: "My goal is to become a teacher, I love working with kids. Also to run a pageant of my own one day! I'd love to pass on my knowledge to younger generations, and last but not least I want to own my own salon as a cosmetologist/ photographer! I never want to be bored with my life I want to wake up every morning excited for the day! So I'm going to do all the things I love!"

8

DLM: "What are your favorite charities?

Brandi: "I love the Ronald McDonald foundation, Abby's closet, and The Eagles."

DLM: What's your dream for the world?

Brandi: "My dream for the world is that people could see that we are all equal. We are all special in our own way, but on the inside we are all the same! The color or your skin, the size you are, the size of your bank account shouldn't define you. Instead the way you treat people should. The world would be such a better place if we put our differences aside and just help each other and if everybody was completely equal."

DLM: Who is your favorite designer?

Brandi: "I don't know much about designer things. When I'm looking for fashion I go with whatever I'm feeling that day! I can tell you that I love the store Torrid, Deb and Ross dress for less! They always have the best clothes and for great deals!"

DML: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing this interview?

Brandi: "I'd like to tell anybody out there that feels down about yourself, don't ever let what other people say define you. You are beautiful just the way you are. It took me way to long to find this out for myself. Surround yourself with people that are positive and get out into your community and do something amazing and those little negative things will seem to just disappear!

I hate having to drop extra weight! The easier it is the better, the faster the better! So what can I do? First off, you should always check with your doctor before anything! The same thing is not always best for everyone, and the results are not the same either. Now having said that….. 1. DO NOT eat past 7 P.M. 2. Cut out carbs (For at least 3 weeks) If you do this for at least one month, you won’t believe your scales. Also to tone up try to do at least 25 sit ups a night. If you can’t do that because, of back problems or other issues, try sitting in a chair and raising your legs up together as far as you can without pain. Another good exercise, is putting your hands on your waist and turning half way side to side as fast as you can without pain or dizziness. Or try good easy yoga dvd.

This is a fast and easy way to drop a few lbs. before summer. However you must keep in mind that ya’ll ain’t gonna drop nothing if you cheat. For example, Do not stuff your face before 7 P.M. and think you’re calling it good. That’s not going to work! For the average height you must try to stay at about 1200 calories per day (check with your doctor to determine your safe calorie count.) Also try your hardest to eat healthy just to be healthy. This will make things go faster. However don’t worry it will still work if you’re eating cake etc. as long as you stay within your calorie count.

These are simply my own opinions. I have tried these products personally and have decided to share my opinions because, I HATE when I buy something and it is a hot mess that I wish I hadn’t spent my good money on. Please remember

MAYBELLENE EYEBROW GEL Brow Drama When I first opened this I was confused that it looked like a mascara brush. I thought I bought the wrong product and was a little pissed to be honest, but then I realized that it was necessary to stroke it on with the brush to make it look like real eyebrows. You can use the tip of it to draw a little bit then go over it with the brush part. It stays on pretty well., and makes my eyebrows look thicker, and I need thicker after four children who took my eyebrows and made me look like a chola from down town LA. Just be sure to go easy, we don't want you to look

MAYBELLENE CONCEALER Instant Age Rewind Eye Circle Eraser My good friend’s beautiful daughter Alyssa recommended this to me, and I love it! You just give it a little shake, then twist the top and gently rub the sponge under your eyes and anywhere else you want to cover up and it works instantly after smearing it in lightly with your finger. This is a

Cover Girl & Olay Simply Ageless eye concealer I liked this a lot! I use it for an all over foundation instead of just an eye concealer. It is not easy to get the right color foundation for me without looking like I’ve caked it on, or I’m trying to be a drag queen (no offense to drag queens) I found that with this as a base and lightly brushing a powder cover up over it I look very natural and movie star like, or that’s what I’m told every time I wear this. So I give this product a thumbs up!
