a Message from Headmaster Fr. Michael tidd, oSb Dear Delbarton Parents, As I note each year to our new families, the faculty and staff of Delbarton School are your partners in the education and formation of your son. There is no more powerful team than Delbarton and our parents working together for the good of our students. This fact was demonstrated last spring when, together, we navigated the COVID-19 pandemic and successfully launched the Virtual Delbarton distance learning program. In anticipation of resuming in-person instruction, we have prepared this Parent Guide to Getting Involved and Giving to provide you with a comprehensive description of essential information and contacts, and the many ways that you can immerse yourself in the Delbarton community. This Guide also explains how you can assist the School in advancing our mission of providing the highest quality Benedictine Catholic education to our talented and diverse young men. Getting involved in the Mothers’ Guild, Fathers and Friends, the Delbarton Arts Council and the Parents Council on Diversity & Inclusion is easy and is greatly rewarding. Volunteering benefits your son and you as a parent. You’ll meet other parents and get to know the School and its distinctive Benedictine culture intimately. Volunteering and giving are expressions of your interest in and commitment to your son’s life. While we continue to be impacted by the global pandemic, this year we expect to offer many opportunities for our parents to get to know each other and to give back to the School.

I encourage you to share your expertise with us, whatever it may be. Shape your volunteering to fit your ability to pitch in…whatever time you can share will be well worth it! “All children are warmed by the fires built by others.” Tuition does not cover the full cost of educating your son. Indeed, philanthropy at Delbarton through our annual giving program, the Delbarton Fund, provides $2,420 in support for each Delbarton student. Your gifts support the people and programs that make Delbarton so special. Your generous investment in the enhancements of tomorrow through our capital or major gift program will build Delbarton’s long-term reputation that will continue to benefit your son as an adult. Thank you for your faith in Delbarton by entrusting your son to us. Together, even when facing extraordinary challenges like COVID-19, we will give him a transformative education like none other. That’s the Delbarton Difference! Gratefully,
Fr. Michael Tidd, O.S.B. Headmaster

How to Get Involved – Parent organization opportunities Delbarton parents have many wonderful opportunities to get involved. The following are brief descriptions of our parent organizations and groups, followed by a list of contacts. Membership in all Delbarton parent organizations is free and open to all Delbarton parents. We encourage you to get involved early to enjoy the full benefits of the Delbarton experience for you and your family.
the Delbarton Mothers’ Guild (DMG) The Delbarton Mothers’ Guild (DMG), an organization of Delbarton mothers and guardians, supports the educational, cultural, social, spiritual and financial needs of Delbarton. Through its volunteer committees of mothers, the DMG assists with Homecoming, partners with Campus Ministry for the Thanksgiving Food and Christmas Toy drives, decorates the campus for Christmas, co-hosts class socials with Fathers & Friends, and kicks off the school year with class coffees for all Delbarton moms. To support Delbarton’s financial aid program, the DMG annually conducts three main fundraising efforts – the Delbarton Shop, Shop ‘Til You Drop and the Spring Fashion Show & Dinner. The DMG also runs community-building programs such as an Advent and Lenten Retreats, DMG Cares, weekly Rosary and Jockey Hollow walk, a monthly Book Club, Walking with Purpose, and various other social gatherings. All Delbarton mothers and guardians are welcome to join the DMG.

the Delbarton Fathers and Friends (F&F) Delbarton is not just a school – it’s an experience. Fathers & Friends offers Delbarton fathers and guardians multiple ways to get involved. F&F hosts a variety of events throughout the year, from a highly popular Poker Night, to harvesting food for the hungry and homeless with America's Grow-a-Row, to organizing a Night of Dialogue for dads and sons, to serving at the local Soup Kitchen, and networking events. Like the DMG, Fathers & Friends members work to generate financial support for Delbarton’s financial aid program and for athletics, student activities, and the arts. In November, F&F hosts the annual Headmaster’s Dinner, a gathering of parents, alumni, and friends of Delbarton to raise funds for our financial aid program. The Spring Golf Outing draws golfers and supporters to have fun and generate support for athletics, activities, and the arts at Delbarton. Our monthly meetings are open to all Delbarton fathers and guardians, and include social and networking components to ensure that we all get to know one another. Perhaps you have said to your son at some point, “What you put into Delbarton is what you'll get out of it.” The same is true of getting involved in F&F. All Delbarton fathers and guardians are welcome to join Delbarton Fathers & Friends.
the Delbarton Parents of Graduates association (DPGa) The Delbarton Parents of Graduates Association enables parents of Delbarton alumni stay in touch with their Delbarton friends, with the School and St. Mary’s Abbey. DPGA events include a Homecoming reception tent, a December Jazz Concert, Palm Sunday Mass and Brunch, and a Spring Wine Tasting Dinner. These get-togethers preserve and enhance relationships among

Delbarton parents of alumni, and promote the advancement of Delbarton School and St. Mary’s Abbey. All parents of Delbarton alumni are cordially invited to join the DPGA, the ultimate ‘friendraising’ organization.
the Delbarton arts Council (DaC) The Delbarton Arts Council is a consortium of students, teachers and parents that supports the visual and performing arts at Delbarton, by encouraging and recognizing participants in the arts, highlighting arts-related events and programs, and serving as a forum for new ideas to promote the arts in the Delbarton community. The Arts Council meets monthly to supports the School’s commitment to a liberal arts education that encompasses the arts and to encourage all Delbarton students to observe, enjoy and participate in the arts. We welcome your involvement! DAC volunteers are instrumental in running arts events and receptions, organize FAC Christmas decorating and hosts the popular Delbarton Arts Festival each May.
Parent Council on Diversity & Inclusion (PCDI) Diversity Among Peers (DAP) increases cultural awareness and promotes diversity throughout all aspects of the Delbarton community. DAP accomplishes this task through activities and collaborative exchanges where students and families share aspects of life that make us particularly unique. The Parent Council on Diversity & Inclusion (PCDI) organizes and assists in running these events, and ensures that all families feel comfortable, included and involved in the life of the School.

The Abbey Players, our mainstage company, produces two shows each season - a straight play in the fall and a musical in the winter. The theatrical season is capped in the spring by the Delbarton One-Act Festival, an entirely student-produced festival of short plays. All productions are performed in the Fine Arts Center’s 600-seat theater and open to students in grades 7 through 12. As an allboys school, Delbarton welcomes female actors to join our program through open auditions for each production.

Campus Ministry Dr. David Hajduk, Director of Mission and Ministry Mr. Matthew White, Assistant Director of Mission and Ministry Our Mission and Ministry program acts as the ‘heartbeat’ of Delbarton School, providing opportunities for students to seek and encounter God and His love for them, and respond to that love through faith and service. Students share Catholic and Benedictine values and build bonds of brotherhood on retreat weekends. Days of Recollection meet the spiritual needs of our Middle Schoolers and Seniors Juniors and seniors apply and are selected for leadership positions as Retreat Team leaders and Service Project Coordinators. Our community service program is an expression of the Benedictine charism of hospitality that welcomes everyone as Jesus Christ. With 24 projects, and a community-wide Thanksgiving Food Drive, Christmas Gift Drive and spring Blood Drive, community service at Delbarton affords each student the opportunity to donate with passion and commitment to those in need, and to develop into a ‘servant leader.’ This year, guided by Dr. Hajduk and Mr. White, the six student campus ministers below will lead the Campus Ministry program.

Delbarton alumni association The archway is a symbol of Delbarton’s enduring strength, and the Alumni Association is a large stone that supports the arch. The Alumni Association focuses on mentorship, missions, financial support and building the next generation of alumni. Throughout the year, the Association invites Delbarton alumni to events and receptions around the country to foster fraternity among alumni and to learn about current events happening on campus. Members also contribute their time and talent to Delbarton students by serving as Delbarton Incubator advisors, participating in Alumni Career Day and serving as hosts for DelEX, our annual externship program for rising seniors. Delbarton alumni support both the School and each other. As one alumnus commented recently, “The Delbarton alumni network is the greatest fraternity in the world.”

Giving to Delbarton School – the Gift of Knowledge Delbarton is your school. You should take justifiable pride in its every achievement, and your son and family are an important part of our tradition of excellence in Benedictine Catholic education. Thanks to the generosity of Delbarton families and alumni, we instituted a ‘no boy left behind’ policy to assist our current families with financial aid during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Delbarton gratefully welcomes your philanthropic financial support. There are many ways to support Delbarton, today and in the future. Your unique circumstances will suggest which type of gift is best. Here are brief explanations for the various methods to give back to Delbarton.
the Delbarton Fund The Delbarton Fund is a fundamental component of continued success at Delbarton. About 10% of the annual operating budget comes from gifts to the Delbarton Fund, gifts that are made every year by parents, alumni, and friends. Together, tuition and the Delbarton Fund are the foundation of daily life at Delbarton, transforming the educational experience for every student every day. The Delbarton Fund has been tasked with responding to the current crisis situation and will allow the school to respond swiftly to new challenges in extraordinary times, including: increased financial aid requests; emergency support for students and faculty; additional technology resources; expanded faculty development, training, and innovation. As we endeavor to address current needs and plan for an uncertain future, the Delbarton Fund is KEY to that plan.Distinct from fundraising for strategic priorities or donations to St. Mary’s Abbey, gifts to the Delbarton Fund add up to about $2,420 per student and are used 38
delparent guide 7.2020.qxp_Layout 1 8/3/20 6:48 PM Page 39
exclusively to support school programs and facilities, fund a financial aid budget of over $3.5 annually, and provide faculty support and professional development. For more information, please contact Maria Van Kirk P’26, Director of the Delbarton Fund, at mvankirk@delbarton.org.
Capital Giving The major updates to our campus infrastructure would not be possible if not for the generosity of our community making multiyear sacrificial commitments towards Delbarton School and St. Mary's Abbey. With the complete renovation of Trinity Hall behind us, we now set our sights on the construction of a modern Learning Commons, and continue to raise funds for an Athletic Field House Facility by Cocoziello Field at William O. Regan Stadium. We also encourage our families to support the renovations at St. Mary’s Abbey, as well.
endowment Giving A healthy endowment provides the School with long-term fiscal security and takes the pressure off the operating budget. Endowment principal remains intact as the school spends a limited percentage of the interest income, usually 4% of the endowment’s value annually. Delbarton’s Endowment Fund allows us to invest in faculty compensation, new faculty positions (through endowed chairs), funds for professional development, enriched academic programs and resources, and, most important of all, financial aid to enable all qualified students to come to Delbarton without regard to financial need.

Giving
Gifts in Kind Delbarton welcomes donations of needed goods and services rather than cash. Donations of printing and professional services, construction and landscaping materials are examples of gifts in kind that directly enhance the quality of the Delbarton Experience for all students.
Planned Giving Since 1939, Delbarton School has been educating and developing young men in mind, body and spirit. The Benedictine monks of St. Mary’s Abbey and their lay colleagues challenge our students daily to pursue excellence in and out of the classroom, to strengthen their character through Christian community and to develop their leadership skills through service to others. Through thoughtful planning, you can choose long range giving options that work best for you and your loved ones. These opportunities can provide for family and even yield income during your retirement years. • Making a gift to Delbarton in your will or living trust • Giving the proceeds of life insurance or retirement plans • Arranging a gift that provides income to you and/or a loved one Many of these options will not only benefit Delbarton School but can also provide benefit you and your heirs through tax savings and other means. For more information on Capital Giving, Endowment Giving and Gifts in Kind, please contact Matt Campbell ’08, Senior Major Gifts Officer, at mcampbell@delbarton.org. For more information on the various ways to support Delbarton financially go to delbarton.org and click ‘Giving’. 40

a Primer on Governance at Delbarton School and St. Mary’s abbey Delbarton School and St. Mary’s Abbey are the two operating entities of the New Jersey civil corporation known as The Order of St. Benedict of New Jersey, Inc., or OSBNJ. Delbarton School and St. Mary’s Abbey are the two entities owned and operated by OSBNJ. The duly elected abbot of St. Mary’s Abbey is the president of OSBNJ and serves ex officio as the President of Delbarton School. The Abbot appoints the Headmaster of Delbarton School who is the chief administrator of the School, and is responsible to the Abbot for the administration of the School.
the board of trustees and the board of regents: a Partnership The Board of Trustees of OSBNJ is made up of two members appointed by the abbot and two members elected by the monastic Chapter. The Council of Seniors is the ordinary governing body of Delbarton School. The Board of Regents is an advisory board of distinguished men and women who provide expert counsel to the Benedictine community of St. Mary’s Abbey in all aspects of the governance of Delbarton School. The Board elects its members from candidates proposed by its committee on Governance. With the leaders of the School and the Abbey, the Regents are a partnership of persons willing to lead Delbarton School and volunteer their talents in achieving Delbarton School’s objectives. Delbarton School and St. Mary’s Abbey are separate operating entities of OSBNJ. They each have their own separate accounting 41

records and business offices. Each entity also has a separate investment portfolio managed by two separate investment committees of lay experts. Delbarton School and St. Mary’s Abbey each have their own annual operating budgets and revenue sources: Delbarton School’s annual operating revenue comes from tuition, auxiliary student services and programs (such as transportation services and Summer Programs), donations (the Delbarton Fund), and a c. 4% draw on the total value of the School’s endowment. Tuition is used solely for the operations of Delbarton School. St. Mary’s Abbey does not use tuition revenue to fund its operations, other than the salaries earned by Benedictines who work as staff members at Delbarton School. All Benedictines are paid at the same rate as a comparably qualified lay person. Any gifts designated for Delbarton School or St. Mary’s Abbey are used only according to the donor’s instructions.
