DearFriendsofDelbarton,

RenewalisaregularpartoflifeatDelbarton. WinterinMorrisCountywasmild,sothetransition tospringtimeonDelbartoncampushasbeena relativelyminorchangeinthetemperature.The blossomingofourtreesandflowers,however,isa vividreminderoftherenewalthatcomestous annuallywiththeturningoftheseasons.Even moreprofoundly,ourobservanceofLentand celebrationofEasteralsohelpedusexperience thepowerofChrist’srisingtonewlifeandrefresh ourhopeinthepowerofhisResurrectionfor humanity.

Alongwithcontinualimprovementofour academic,spiritual,athleticandactivities programs,renewalofDelbarton’shistoricbuildings andgroundshasbeenahighpriorityforthelast fifteenyears.UndertheleadershipofBrother PaulDiveny,O.S.B.,our11thHeadmaster(20072018),thefirstcomprehensiveeffortsweremade athistoricconservationoftheFormalGarden statuaryandofrestorationworkonthefirstfloor ofOldMain.Bytheearly2000s,theformer Kountzemansionhadbeenusedforclassrooms, dormitories,facultyandstaffhousing,andoffices. Itwasamuch-lovediconofourschool,but perhapstoomuchloved!Gradually,OldMain’s fabricwassecuredwhileplansweremadeto furtherconserveandrestorethebuildingandits surroundinggardenforthefutureenjoymentof theDelbartonfamily.

Thisissueof Delbarton highlightsthedramatic stepforwardinourconservationandrestoration effortsmadepossiblebythegenerosityofMrs. BeckyO’Neill,thewidowofPeterL.O’Neill’59. PeterwasastaunchlyloyalDelbartonalumnus whospenthishighschoolyearslivingandlearning asaboardingstudentinOldMain.Whenshewas lookingforawaytopermanentlyhonorPeter’s memory,Beckywaskindenoughtofunda restorationandredecorationofthefirstfloorof OldMainasthe PeterL.O’Neill’59AlumniCenter atOldMain.Therestoredroomsopenedwitha dedicationonNovember12,2022.

TheCenternowhousestheofficesofour AssistantHeadmasterforAdvancementand AlumniJ.CraigParis’82andhisAssistantHeidi Williamson.Craighasreturnedtotheverysame roominwhichhebeganworkingatDelbartonin 1987.BothCraigandHeidiarenowableto welcomealumniandfriendsvisitingOldMain.Old MaincontinuestobeDelbarton’ssocialcenter,as therestoredroomsareusedallyearroundfor alumniand parentevents.

ThePeterL.O’Neill’59AlumniCenterisa powerfulexampleofDelbarton’songoingbalance oftraditionandinnovation,ofourdesiretobe groundinginourrichheritagewhilelookingtothe futurewithconfidence.Throughoutthisissueof Delbarton,Ihopeyouseethatspiritactiveinthe student,parent,andalumnistoriesyoufindhere.

atOldMainisamagnificentrenovationmade possiblethroughthegenerosityand dedicationofthelatePeter‘Pete’O’Neill’swife Rebecca‘Becky’O’Neill.Becky’sdevotionto herhusbandPeteisreflectedinthemany lovingtouchesintegratedthroughoutthe project.

PetelivedinOldMainduringhisfouryearsat Delbartonandoftensharedfondmemoriesof hisexperienceasaboarder.Heattributed muchofhissuccesstotheeducationhe receivedasaDelbartonstudent,andoften saidthatDelbartonwashis inlocoparentis, teachinghimtheskillsthatguidedhimtohis latersuccesses.Hewentontoenjoyavariety ofprofessionalrolesincludingpoliceofficer, lawyer,FBISpecialAgentand,finally, successfulentrepreneurwhocreatedaglobal business.

AftergraduatingfromDelbartonin1959,Pete movedontoColgateUniversity,andthenthe NewYorkUniversitySchoolofLaw.He attendedlawschoolwhileservingasapolice officerand,in1966,wasappointedasa SpecialAgentoftheFederalBureauof Investigation.Heultimatelytransitionedinto

In2002,whenfurnishingtheO’Neill residenceinFlorida,afriendsuggested BeckyconsidertheworkofAmerican ImpressionistartistJohnTraynor’79. LikingTraynor’spainterlystyle,Becky purchasedoneofhispaintings.Later,she learnedthatJohnwasaDelbarton alumnuswhograduatedexactlytwenty yearsafterherhusband,andthathehad paintedmanyoftheheadmasterportraits intheGalleryofOldMain.Thismade selectinganartisttocreatePete’s posthumousportraiteasy,andPete’sspirit isbeautifullycapturedintheTraynor portraitthatnowhangsintheentryfoyer. BeckyispicturedherewithartistJohn Traynor’79andhiswifeLizTraynor.

In1977,leveraginghisexperiencesin lawenforcementandbusiness,Pete co-foundedCARCOGroup,Inc.,an informationservicescompany specializinginfrauddetection.Under Pete’sleadership,CARCOgrewfroma pioneerinvehiclepre-insurance inspectiontotheleaderinbackground investigationandriskmitigation. Launchedwithjustfiveemployees, CARCOexpandeditsoperationsinto 192countriesandthefirmnowuses advancedmobileAItechnology platformsthatwereunimaginable whenPetestartedthecompany.

InadditiontotheSocietyofFormer SpecialAgentsoftheFBI,Petewasa memberoftheAmericanSocietyof IndustrialSecurity(ASIS),aDirectorof theNewYorkLawEnforcement Foundationandalifetimememberand presidentoftheInternationalSecurity ManagementAssociation(ISMA).In 1999,PetewasawardedtheEllisIsland MedalofHonorandwasinductedinto theDelbartonSchoolHallofHonor.

PeteandBeckyO’NeilljoinedtheFr. AugustineWirth,O.S.B.Societyand theSt.BenedictSocietyin2019.In 2023,Peteposthumouslywashonored bytheFrederickD.SuydamMemorial Associationinrecognitionofhis distinguishedcareerinthepublic sector.

FollowingPete’sdeathin2019,Becky decidedtohonorherhusband’slove forDelbartonwitharenovationofthe groundfloorofOldMain.Inaveryreal sense,thenewAlumniCenternamed inPete’smemoryreturnshimhometo theveryroomswherehiscorevalues andbeliefswereformed.Heneverlost hisprofoundconnectiontoDelbarton ortohisfriendsfromtheClassof 1959.BeckyO’Neillworkedso diligentlytotransformtheground floorofOldMain,andDelbarton alumninowhaveaspecialplaceto gatheroncampus.PeteO’Neill’s legacyliveson.

Formerlypartofthesenior guidancesuite,thisroomis nowaninvitingreceptionarea andoffice.

Boodle’s,aprivateclubin Londonfoundedin1762, inspiredthedesignandvivid colorpaletteoftheMusicRoom.

TheBoardRoom, whichdoublesasa diningspace,includes amahogany conferencetableand antiqueChippendale chairs.Thedrapery fabricisembroidered andbrocadedlinen.

O’Neill’59AlumniCenterat OldMainonNovember15, 2022markedtheconclusionofa majorrenovationthatbeganwiththe replacementofthemansion’soriginal 140-year-oldwindowswithhandcraftedmahoganyreplicas.

PeteO’NeillwasfondofDelbarton Green,soitisnosurprisethatthe colorisprominentlyfeaturedinmany ofthesumptuousfabrics.Eachground floorroomnowhasadistinct personalityandpurpose.

Toassistwiththerenovation,Becky O’Neillenlistedtheprofessional servicesofLindaAshleyofLinda AshleyInteriorDesignofPalmBeach,

Florida.Afterherinitialsurveyofthe 1883Kountzefamilysummer residence,Lindaresearchedthe periodtodeterminehowtorestore theroomstotheiroriginalsplendor. HermaininspirationwasWhitehallin PalmBeach,HenryFlager’s75-room GildedAge1902winterretreat,the UniversityClub,aprivateManhattan socialclubnowhousedina1899 granite-facedclubhouseonWest54th Street,andBoodle’s,aLondon gentlemen’sclubfoundedin1762.

1890TiffanyGrandfather Clock

The1890Tiffanygrandfatherclock wasdonatedin2022bytheVermylen andFiddesfamilieswhich,between them,havetenDelbartonalumni spanning25years,from1995to2020. Theclockhadbeeninthefamilyfor 133years,firstonBrooklynHeights andtheninNewJerseyforthepast72 years.Onceaweek,theheirloom timepieceishand-woundusingits originalbrasskey,andwearepleased toreporttheclockhasanappealingly melodiouschime.

IthinkaboutthislinefromSelah’s songwhenIthinkaboutmy journeytobecomingtheDirector ofMissionandMinistryatDelbarton.I hadneverplannedtobeinthis positionasIwasdesigningmycareer path.However,IcanseehowGod preparedmetobeexactlywhereIam today,andknowingGod’splans,Iknow thatIamexactlywhereIamsupposed tobe.

Igrewupinareligioushousehold, theoldestof8children(tiedforthe oldestsinceIamatwin)inSpring Lake,NJ.Ilivedaveryactive lifestyle,spendinglongsummer daysonthebeachandplaying soccer,football,basketball, baseball,orvolleyballwhenit wasnotbeachweather.Playing allofthesesportsledtomy firstcareerchoice, ProfessionalAthlete.

AsIwasfinishingupmy highschoolathletic careersinsoccer, basketball,and volleyball,I recognizedthatmy opportunitiesto playasportin collegewere notwhatI wanted.I hadto decide

whetherIshouldplayasportata collegethatIdidnotwanttogoto,or shouldIgotoacollegethatIwanted toattendandpotentiallygiveupmy dreamofbeingaProfessionalAthlete. Idecidedtoputmyprofessional athleticdreamsaside,andgotothe CollegeoftheHolyCrossinWorcester, MA.ItwasherethatIbegantowork onacareerpaththatinvolvedServing God.

GrowingupIhadattendedanall-boys CatholichighschoolwhereIreally begantogrowinknowledgeandlove ofGod.Ibeganpracticingmyfaithon adailybasis,andthemoreIpracticed myfaiththemoreIsawthebenefitsof it.Ihadcometotherealizationthat mylifewassomuchbetterwhenGod wasatthecenter,andIwantedto sharethatrealizationwitheveryone. This,alongwithatriptoMedjugorje, reallycementedtheideathatIwanted togrowinmyrelationshipwithGodas wellastohelpotherstogrowintheir relationshipswithGod.Thisledmeto chooseReligiousStudiesasoneofmy twomajorsatHolyCross.(Theother wasPoliticalScience)

AsmycollegecareerunfoldedIgot moreandmoreinvolvedinCampus Ministry.IfoundthatItrulyloved embracingmyfaithandsharingitwith others.EventhoughIlovedallofmy CampusMinistryexperiencesin college,mynextstepaftergraduation wastostudytobecomeapriestfor theGreatDioceseofTrenton.I

enteredImmaculateConception Seminaryplanningtospend6years studyingtobeapriest,andthen spendtherestofmylifesharingGod’s lovethroughthesacramentsand service.After4yearsoflearning abouttheCatholicfaith,prayer, service,andretreatsIdecidedthatthe priesthoodwasnotforme.Istillhada desiretoteachothersaboutGod,the Bible,prayer,andservice,butIfound thingslikehospitalvisits,funerals, familystrugglesverydifficulttodeal withonadailybasis.Iwantedtofinda waytoteachothersaboutGod withouthavingtodothedifficultparts aswell.

WhileIwasinseminary,Iwenton retreatattheDelbartonRetreat Centereveryyear.ItwasherethatI becamefriendswithFr.Bruno,the formerheadmasterofDelbarton.Fr. Brunohappenedtocallmetheday afterIdecidedtoleavetheseminary andaskedmewhatmyplanswere.I toldhimthatIhadnoideawhatmy planswereasIhadjustmadethe decisiontoleavetheseminarytheday before.Hetoldmethattherewasan openingforatheologyteacherat DelbartonandthatIshouldapply.I knewverylittleaboutDelbartonasa school,butIknewitwouldallowmeto teachothersaboutGod,whichiswhat Ireallywantedtodo,soIdecidedto

apply.IfiguredthatifIdidnotlikeit,I couldleaveafterayearortwo.HereI am11yearslater.

IseeGod’sfingerprintsalloverthe roadthathasledmetoDelbarton. WhileIdidnotbecomeaprofessional athlete,allofmyathleticpreparation helpsmeeverydayasIcoach basketballandbaseball.Ididnotplay asportincollege,butthatgaveme moretimetogetinvolvedinCampus Ministry.Iwasabletoattendretreats andservicetrips,whichweresomeof myfavoritememoriesincollege.It alsopreparedmetorunallofthe Delbartonretreats,aswellasservice tripstoWestVirginia,Guatemala,and nowElSalvador.Ididnotbecomea priestasIhadplanned,butmytimein seminarygavemetheeducationI neededtoteachthestudentsof Delbartonhowtogrowintheirfaith.It alsoconnectedmetoFr.Brunowho gavemethepushtoapplyformyfirst jobatDelbarton,andwhojustso happenedtocallmethedayafterI decidedtoleavetheseminary.

Godhasbeenleadingmetothispoint throughoutmylife,andIknowthatI amexactlywhereIammeanttobe. Delbartonhasbeensuchablessingto measithasallowedmetocontinueto pursueallofthethingsthatItruly lovewhileservingGodatthesame time.Whetheritiscoachingbasketball andbaseball,moderatingthesurf club,helpingthepoorandhomeless, ordoingserviceinforeigncountries,I knowthatGodblessedthebroken roadthathasleadmestraightto Delbarton.

Negrinisinhistenthyearasa well-respectedDelbartonEnglish teacherwhoalsoservesasCoDirectorofDiversityand CommunityBelonging,Councilof SeniorsAdvisor,VarsityAssistant BaseballCoachandMiddleSchool BasketballCoach.

Delbartonoffersseventeenvarsity sportsprogramsatavarietyof levelsandhasanimpressive recordofstate,conference, divisionalandcountychampi-

NegrinhasservedasVarsity BaseballAssistantCoachunder HallofFameHeadCoachBruce Shatel.Heisaproudgraduateof RegisHighSchool,earneda BachelorofArtsdegreeinEnglish fromLaSalleUniversityanda MasterofArtsinSecondary EducationfromPaceUniversity.In 2022,hewasawardedhis doctoratefromDrexelUniversity inEducationLeadership& Managementwithaconcentration inAthleticAdministration.

Collintookfirstplaceoverall,guidingDelbarton toitsfirsteverNJACChampionship.Tiedat 56-56withChatham,Delbartonfinishedwith betterindividualfinishesandabettersevenmanadvantageby18seconds. Delbartonopenedtheseason03,losingtoSetonHallPrepand St.Peter’sPrepbyjustfive points.A38-0homevictory againstCliftonturnedthe momentum,followedbya49-10 victoryatParamusCatholicand athrilling37-19Homecomingwin overPopeJohnonOctober8. Theteamwonitsfourthstraight gameonOctober15,witha comebackvictoryagainst HudsonCatholic21-14before losingtoDePaul21-10andtoSt. Joe’sMontvalebyonepoint2827inovertimeintheseason finale.

Notdeterred,theteamwentona runintheNon-PublicAplayoffs, defeatingSt.JosephMetuchen 42-6,beforeearningoneofthe program’sbiggestwins, defeating#3St.Peter’sPrep3512inJerseyCitytoadvanceto thesemifinalagainstBergen Catholic.Delbarton’sseason endedthenextweekagainst BergenCatholic28-7.

TheGreenWavewent7-3inJanuarywith bigwinsoverMendhamandSparta,both indoubleovertimethrillers.Inthe MorrisCountyTournament,theGreen Waveearnedconvincingwinsover KinnelonandMorrisHillsbeforetakinga 53-50winoverChathaminthecounty semifinal.Delbartonwaslookingto repeatascountychampionandtookcare ofbusinessbeforeasold-outcrowdat CountyCollegeofMorris,defeating Madison58-36towintheGreenWave’s secondstraightcountytitle.

immediatelycontributedfor Delbarton.Inslalomevents,the teamearned2ndand3rdplace finisheswhileDelbartonwon1st and2ndinthegiantslalom events.Friedrichwonthreeofhis sixracesandJohnsonfinished tworacesin3rdandtwoin4th. HeadingintotheRaceof Champions,wherefourofsix skiersqualifiedfortherace, Friedrichwonthegiantslalomrun andoneofthetwoslalomruns andfinishedinfirstplaceoverall.

DelbartondominatedatDistricts, ultimatelysending13wrestlersto Statesaftercrowningnine RegionalchampionsonFebruary 25.Atthestatetournamentin BoardwalkHall,fourGreenWave wrestlersfinishedatthetopofthe podium,whileGreenWave wrestlersalsoearnedasecondplacefinishandtwothirdplace finishes.Vazquez(1-0winat138 lbs.)andRuizwrappeduptheir Delbartoncareersasrepeatstate champions;Ruizwonhisfinal match3-2tocompletean undefeatedseason.Cerchiowon hisfirststatetitleat165lbs, completinghisundefeatedseason bywinning4-1inhisfinalmatch.

Green Wave Indoor Track and Field, coached by Andrew Sherwood, had a historic run this winter, highlighted by senior Collin Boler ’23 (Princeton) winning the High School Mile at the Millrose Games.

The team had a great showing in many winter events,

includingCollinBolertakingfirstplaceinthe1000mat thePietrewiczInvitational,while BrianBoler’23 (Princeton) tooksecondintheevent,withbothbrothers settingnewschoolrecordtimes.Theteamtook2nd overallattheMorrisCountyRelaysand PaulQuense ’24 tookfirstplaceinpolevaultattheNon-PublicA StateRelays.

TheFreshman/Sophomoreperformedatahighlevelat thechampionshipsatDrewUniversity,winningtheevent withacombined140points.AttheMorrisCounty Championships,Varsitytook3rdplaceoverall,with CollinBolersettinganew600mrecordwitha1:19.68 time.AttheNon-PublicChampionshipsQuensewonthe polevault,thefirstDelbartonindoorpolevaulttitle since2016.CollinandBrianBoleralsowonNon-Public titles,withCollinwinningthe800mandBrianthe 3200m.

Overtheyears,different peoplehaveplayedan importantroleinmylife. Uponreflection,theonewho hasbeenthemostimportantto meisFr.BeatusLucey.Letme tellyouwhy.

In2019,Fr.Beatuswasan honoreeattheabbey’sannual gala,TheAbbot’sTable.Iwas askedtointroducehimand here’showmyspeechbegan. (Unfortunately,youcan’thear mywonderfulimitationofhis speakingvoice!)“Hmm…lookat thatone.Whenhecametothe monastery,hedidn’tknowwhat oysterswere;nowhecantell youwhatsideofthebaythey camefrom.”

WhenIcametothemonastery over40yearsago,Ididn’tknow whatoysterswere.Iwasjusta snot-nosedkidfromWest Orange.Fr.Beatuswastheprior whenIjoinedand,forsome reason,hetookaninterestinmy social,moralandintellectual betterment.Ilearnedvolumes aboutartandculture,lifeand faithfromthiswonderfulman

andhumblemonk.Hewasa mentortomeinsomanyways asagiftedteacher,an accomplishedartist,areverent naturalistandadeeply spiritualsoul.

WhenIoriginallywrotethis article,Fr.Beatuswasafull-time residentinourinfirmaryandhis healthwasfrail,yethewasstill verymuchwithus.Ihadjust helpedhimtosendhisbrother anirreverentbirthdaycard.

IarrivedatSt.Mary’sAbbeyin 1976asa23-year-old,college

graduate.MaybeitwasmyLatin degreethatinterestedhim.Or maybeitwasthephotographer PerhapsBeatus,theartist, detectedapossiblekindred spirit.Hebecameamentor,and was20yearsmysenior,making himsomethingofafatherfigure. Asthedecadespassed,theage differencematteredlessandless.

Asakidgrowingupinanurban environment,movingto Morristownin1976waslike movingtothefrontier.Ialways hadaninterestinplants,butI remembersayingsomethingto myfatheraboutourbackyard weedsandhisresponsewas,“As longastheyaregreen,that’sall thatmatters.”Fr.Beatustutored meinallthingsgreen.Inmy earlymonasticyears, communitymemberswalked beforethefinalhourofprayer.In thewarmermonths,astrollwith Beatuswasabotanylesson whereIlearnedallabout Delbartonflora.Ialsolearned fromhimhowtoforceflowering treesandshrubsintobloomand howtoarrangethemartistically. Hetaughtmetoappreciatethe

formofavaseand howtoarrange flowers-ataskIstill performinourchurch. Whenhewasbedridden,Ibroughthim flowerswhichhe appreciated.

Asanartist,Fr.Beatus expandedmy worldviewandhelped mebroadenmyvision. Hedraggedmetoall kindsofgalleryshows andtaughtmelife skillslikehowtohob nob,balanceadrink andacanapé,andsayprofound thingsaboutworksofartthatI didn’tcomprehend.

Theultimatewasatriptothe WhitneyMuseumtoseeashow called Fat&Felt,wheretheartist tookblocksoftallowfatand attachedpiecesoffeltcutin variousshapes.That’swhereI drewtheline.Overtheyearswe hadmanyalaughaboutcontemporaryartandartists.Ialsohad thegoodfortunetospendtime withhiminItaly,wherehe sharedhisvastknowledgeof Renaissanceartand architecture.Hetaughtmehow tounderstandapainting.Healso advised,“Wheneveryouvisita buildingforthefirsttime,always gointhroughthefrontdoor.

Thatishowthearchitectmeant youtoseeit,”andIhave followedhisadviceeversince.

Fr.Beatusencouragedmy photographyandwasareliable critic.Ilearnedanimportant teachinglessonbyobserving himinteractwithDelbartonart studentswherehewould encourageboystofollowtheir owninnervoiceandproduce worksthatwereworldsapart fromanythinghehimselfwould havedone.

Heoncesharedananecdote withme,whichhelpedmeasan administratorindealingwith parents:Amomcomesinto meetwithFr.Beatusabouther son,veryupsetwithhislong hair.Beatusunderstoodthis

wasjustaphase,soheadvised hertojustleaveitalone.She protested,towhichBeatussaid, “Madame,yoursonwillgrow up.Oursarealwayssixteen.”

Fr.Beatuswasalwaysthe consummateteacheryet occasionallyspokeaboutgiving upteaching.Itoldhim,“Youare abornteacher.Youwillnever beabletogiveitup.”Amidthis funk,wewenttoanexhibitof RussianFuturistartwhere Beatussawtwoyoungwomen standinginfrontofapainting. Beforeyoucouldsay ‘glasnost’hewasexplaining thepaintingtothem.Whenhe rejoinedme,Isaid,“See,you’ll neverbeabletostopbeinga teacher.”

Somewhereinmyforty-plus yearsineducation,Ipickedupa phrasefromhimthatbecamean importantpartofmycareer. “Thebestteachersarethebest learners”.Tobeaneffective teacher,youmustkeeplearning. Beatuswasforevertaking courses,applyingfortraveland studyprograms,attending conferencesandseminars.

Onesummerhespentfour weeksinSalzburg.Whenhe returned,hewentonandon. Finally,Iaskedhim,“Sohowwas thefood?”“Beige”washisreply. Intheend,though,Ifollowedhis exampleandattendedasmany post-degreelearningexperiences thatIcouldandasheadmaster, Irepeatedlyencouragedour facultytodothesame.

VillaSanGirolamoinFiesoleisa beautiful17thcenturystructure withgorgeousviewsover Florence.Thenunsoperatedan oldagehomeandpensionebut whenIarrived,theplacewas entirelyfull.Thenunswerekind enoughtomakeupabedinan office,whereItriedtosleep whilefendingoffthemosquitos. Isurvived,andBeatuswasa great cicerone (guide)and introducedmetothewonders ofFlorence.

Forseveralsummers,Ijoined Beatusforafewdaysathis brother’s‘cottage’inEssex, Massachusetts,purchased‘asis’ inthe70’s.Itsbestfeaturewas anL-shapedscreenedinporch. Dayswerespentleisurely sightseeinginthearea-towns likeRockport,Gloucesterand

Newburyport.Therewasalways plentyoftimetowalk,read, paintornapandhappyhour figuredprominentlyinourdaily schedule.We’deatattraytables ontheporchandtalkforhours. Overtheyears,variousfriends ofminewereabletojoinus,and itwasalwaysgreatfun.

Finally,therewasFr.Beatusthe monkandpriest.Myspirituallife hasbeenenrichedbyhiswisdom andinsightintotheScriptures. Formanyyears,hewasaregular celebrantatthecommunity’ SundayMass.Wewereclose enoughthatIcouldtellhimwhat workedandwhatdidn’tinhis homilies.Hehadafewclunkers. OnethatIreallythoughtfellflat wasanextendedmetaphor about‘thesmellofhotironing’.

AftergraduatingfromSt. Joseph’sPrepinPhiladelphia, TimothyLuceyappliedfor admissiontoSt.Mary’s Monastery,Morristown.Aswas thecustom,hedidtwoyearsof minorseminaryatSt.Vincent College,Latrobe,Pennsylvania. AfterSt.Vincent,FraterBeatus wassenttoSt.Benedict’s Abbey,Atchison,Kansasforhis novitiate.Uponcompletionof hisnovitiate,Beatusprofessed simplevows,July11,1953,and returnedtoMorristownto beginhistheologicalstudiesat theSt.Mary’sAbbeySchoolof Theology.Hewasordaineda priest,May23,1959.Hethen beganhislongcareerof teachingandpriestlyministry.

Fr.Beatusspentalmostallhis monasticlifeinMorristown,a placehelovedandcherished. Evenbeforeordination,Frater Beatus,likemostofthemonks

ofhisgeneration,wasinvolved inthelifeandworkof DelbartonSchoolwherehe taughtEnglish.Overhislong careeratDelbarton,Fr.Beatus filledvariousrolesintheschool -teacher,prefect,moderator andeventuallyheadmaster, from1990until1995.However, itisperhapsasthefounding father,asitwere,oftheArt Department,thatFr.Beatus leaveshisgreatestlegacyto Delbarton.

Startingwithasmallspacein thebackofOldMainandalone facultymember,Fr.Beatusgave shapetoanascentart curriculum,whichgrew substantiallyandisnowhoused intheDelbarton’sFineArts Center.Inboththeschooland themonastery,Fr.Beatus’ artisticflairwasoftenin evidence,whetheritwasa

pieceofcalligraphy,afloral arrangement,asetforaplayor abannerflyinginfrontof TrinityHall.

Throughouthislife,Fr.Beatus championedtheimportanceof beautyineverydaylife.He selectedalmostallofthe artworkthatgracedthe‘new’ monasteryandabbeychurch whentheyopenedin1966. Almostuntiltheendofhislife, heassistedinadorningthe abbeychurchwithplantsand flowers.Thevisualarts, however,werenottheonly formofbeautythatBeatus appreciated.Helovedmusic andtheSaturdayconcertfrom theMetropolitanOperacould oftenbeheardwaftingfromhis room.Hedelightedinthe writtenandspokenwordand hewasavoraciousreader.One ofhisgreatestpleasureswas readingthe NewYorkReviewof Books fromcovertocover.He readwidely,afactthatmade himagreatconversationalist andapopulardinnerguest.

Inadditiontoteachingart,Fr. Beatuswasanaccomplished artistinhisownright.Having obtainedanM.F.A.fromthe CatholicUniversityofAmerica, heinitiallyworkedinmany genres.Overtime,however,he

focusedmoreonwatercolors, andhecontinuedtopaintuntil arthritisnolongermadeit possible.Inhisartwork,one oftenseeshistwoofhisgreat lovescombine-natureand architecture.Hehadakeeneye forthefloraofany environmentinwhichhefound himself.

Nodoubt,heowedthistothe influenceofhisbelovedAunt Peg,herselfamastergardener. Whilehewasstillable,he helpedtendtoseveralgardens intheabbey’sprecincts.When infirmityslowedhimdown,he dedicatedhimselftocaringfor houseplantsinsidethe monastery.

Asbothteacherandstudentof arthistory,hehadagreat interestinarchitecture,witha particularfondnessof RenaissanceandBaroque architecture.Oneofthehigh pointsofhislifewasayearlongsabbaticalinFlorence, Italy,duringwhichhefully immersedhimselfinthe splendorsofItalianartand architecture.Formanyyears, heservedontheArtand ArchitectureCommitteeforthe DioceseofPaterson.

Fr.Beatuswasadedicated monkandpriest.Formostof

hismonasticlife,Beatus ministered tothepeopleofGodbothat themonastery,andinlocal parishesandconvents.Forover adecade,heservedasthe chaplaintotheSistersof CharityofConventStation.His reverenceforandintheliturgy wasalwaysclearlyvisible.He wasespeciallyconscientious aboutpreparinghishomilies andhispreachingoftheWord showedthat.

Oneofhislastexternalworks wasleadingaBiblestudygroup atalocalparish.Theywould meetonFridaymorningand reflectonthereadingsforthe comingSunday.Anotefrom oneoftheparticipantsreveals theimpacthehad.“Youcleared ourmindsandopenedour heartsatthebeginningofeach sessionwithyourwell-directed prayers.Thereadingsforthe comingSundaycouldthenbe digested,absorbedandprayed. ThisgavetheHolySpiritan opportunitytoexpandmy senseofGod’slove.”Untilquite recently,hecontinuedto preachtothesmallgroupof monksinourinfirmary.

Heservedthecommunityas priorunderAbbotBrianClarke and,asaconfrere,he

demonstratedafiercelovefor themonasticwayoflife.Even astheburdenofageand infirmitytookitscourse, Fr.Beatuscontinuedtogive faithfulwitnessbyhispresence atcommunityprayerand activities.

Declininghealth,however,took itsinevitabletoll;and,overthe lastfewyears,Fr.Beatusmoved firstintoanassistedlivingsuite andthenfinallyintothe abbey’sinfirmary.Inhislast months,Fr.Beatuswasconfined tobed,whichcrampedhisstyle. Still,withthelovingcareofthe nursingstaffandhisconfreres heborehisillnesspatiently.He welcomedvisitsfromfamily andfriendsrightuntilheheard theLordcalltohim,“Welldone, goodandfaithfulservant.”In additiontohismonasticfamily, Fr.Beatusissurvivedbyhis brotherJohnD.,hissisters EleanorandMaryAnnand manyniecesandnephews.

Young alumni Thanksgiving Event

Young Delbarton alumni from 2006 to 2019 (21+ and older) attended a Thanksgiving Eve Happy Hour hosted by Headmaster Fr. Michael Tidd, O.S.B. and the Alumni Association led by President John Ferramosca ’05.

Alumni shared pizza and Cluck U chicken — always a fan favorite — with friends, and many donated unwrapped gifts for the Christmas Toy Drive.

On November 30, the Delbarton Alumni Association got a head start on the Christmas season by hosting its annual reception at the Jersey Shore. A great group of alumni and parents of graduates gathered at the Spring Lake Golf Club in Spring Lake, New Jersey. Guests arrived with unwrapped gifts to donate to the annual Delbarton Christmas Gift Drive.

Glenn Hanley started a new phase of his career as a District Application Engineer for Eaton Corporation in the Dallas / Fort Worth Texas area. He works as a key liaison with area consultant engineering firms to assist them with specifications, new technologies, and engineering project execution.

Larry Cutalo will serve as Second Vice President of the Morris County Bar Association for the 2023 year. Larry is partner at the O’Toole Scrivo law firm and practices in the areas of real estate development and land use. He has two children and lives in Randolph, New Jersey.

Growingup,myfamily didn’tknowmuch aboutDelbarton. Ourpastortoldmy parentsthat Delbartonwasthebesthigh schoolforboysinNewJersey,so thatwaswheretheywantedme togo.WhenIvisitedtheSchool, IlovedmytourandIwas amazedbythesheersizeofthe campus.Fromthatveryfirstday, itwasaneasysellformeandmy parents.

WhenIlookbackonit,the simplestwaytodescribemy experiencehereisthat DelbartonistheplacewhereI grewup.IcametoDelbartonas afreshmaninSeptember1995 andIwasoverayearyounger thanmostofmyclass(and much,muchshorter).Asa freshman,Ijoinedtheskiclub andinmysophomoreyear, Iwasontheswimteam.Some ofmyfondestmemories howevercamefromparticipatingandleadingthefreshman retreats.Oneofmymost treasuredpossessionsisthe woodencrossfrommyown freshmanretreatthatIhave prominentlydisplayedinmy officetothisday.

Overmyfouryearsat Delbarton,Ilearnedhowtothink

Delbartonchangedmylifeand mademewhoIamtoday,which

Pope Francis Appoints Monsignor Geno Sylva ’85 to New Church Role

Tom Loughman ’89Appointed Morris Museum Executive Director

In April, The Morris Museum, announced the appointment of Delbarton alumnus Tom Loughman ’89 as its next Executive Director. Trained as a historian of European art, Loughman began his curatorial career at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and continued at the Phoenix Art Museum, where he served as Curator of European Art and Assistant to the Director for Exhibitions. His five years as Director and CEO of the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT included critically acclaimed exhibitions, major acquisitions and gifts, and the modernization of the museum’s digital and physical presence. Born and raised in Morristown, he graduated from Delbarton in 1989 and earned his A.B. degree at Georgetown University in 1993. He received a Masters in 1995 from the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art in, and in 2003 earned his Ph D from Rutgers University.

Monsignor Geno Sylva ’85 was recently appointed by our Holy Father Pope Francis to the first section of the newly created Dicastery for Evangelization. The Pope established the Dicastery for Evangelization in the 2022 apostolic constitution Praedicate Evangelium, saying that it “serves the work of evangelization, so that Christ, the light of the nations, may be known and witnessed to by word and deed, and the Church, his mystical Body, may be built up.” Currently, Monsignor Sylva is Vicar for Special Projects and the Cathedral, and the Rector of Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson, NJ.

Monsignor Gerard McCarren ‘83 Appointed Seton Hall Theology School Rector and Dean

On March 27, after serving as the Interim Rector and Dean since July 2022, Rev. Monsignor Gerard McCarren ‘83 was appointed the new Rector and Dean of Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology. McCarren studied History and Philosophy at Yale University and earned a Master of Divinity from Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology, and Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) and Doctorate in Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) at Catholic University. Ordained in 1992, from 2007 to 2016, McCarren served as a Vatican appointee to the Joint Commission for Dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the World Methodist Council. He was president of the Federation of Seminary Spiritual Directors from 2018-2022, when he was named the Interim Rector and Dean of Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology.

In1977,theprovenanceofthe twofigureswasconclusively identifiedbyOlgaRaggio,chief oftheDepartmentofWestern EuropeanArtatthe MetropolitanMuseuminNew York,whoconfirmedthatthe ‘terms’(avisualartsreference forasculpturedfigureatopof stonepillarorcolumn)once stoodattheentrancetothe gardensoftheVillaBorghesein Rome.

LutherKountze,anacquisitive collectorinthelate19th century, whenwealthyAmericanswere abletopurchasecultural treasures,shippedthe17th CenturytermsfromRometo enhancehisItalianategardenat Delbarton.Thestatuesare Priapus,theGodofOrchards,

ofFlowers.Bothwerecreatedby ItaliansculptorPietroBernini (1562-1629)withassistancefrom hismorerenownedsonGian LorenzoBernini(1598-1680).

Raggiofirstbecameawareof thestatueswhenaDelbarton relativewroteaboutthemina collegepaper.Raggio’sprofessionalinterestwaspiqued,so shedecidedtovisitMorristown toinvestigatethetwo weathered,paintedoverstatues intheDelbartongarden.Atthe time,therewerefewerthana dozenBerninisintheUnited States,soherdiscoverywas bignewsintheartworld.Ina

Thus it was that in 1977 Priapus and Flora, having stoically tolerated the elements at Delbarton for 87 years, soon were on loan at The Met and later acquired, then meticulously restored and added to the museum’s permanent collection Standing at more than eight feet tall and weighing over a ton each, the statues are on display in The Met’s European Sculpture and Decorative Arts collection

In the Times article, the late Fr. Beatus Lucey, O S B , himself an artist, and a former Delbarton headmaster/art department chair, commented, “Our New Jersey winters aren’t good for marble, not like sunny Italy.” He added, “They weren’t even a focal point here They were behind a boxwood hedge and, as big as they were, you don’t even really notice that they are gone.”

Today, the two empty pedestals can still be seen by the bell entrance behind Old Main, while the rest of Kountze’s strikingly beautiful circa 1890 Formal Garden remains largely intact.

Internationally known scholar and curator Olga Raggio established the provenance of Delbarton’s Bernini statues. She was instrumental in transporting them for conservation at the Met where they are now part of the museum’s permanent collection.
