Engineering & Design Club

Coding and Design through Robotics This course introduces Delbarton students to the fundamental concepts of robotics and programming. Students design robots to accomplish specific tasks and then test and modify their designs.

In this Club, students in all grades collaborate in groups to complete engineering and design projects in areas of their personal interest. Project partnerships are encouraged to enter state and national contests and compete against other student teams.

Introduction to Architecture and Construction This course introduces students to architectural design-and-building construction methods through real-world building design projects. Students develop skills in computer-aided design using AutoCAD while developing hands-on construction skills.

AP Computer Science A (Java) This course introduces students to computer science with fundamental topics that include problem solving, design strategies and methodologies, organization of data (data structures), approaches to processing data (algorithms), analysis of potential solutions, and the ethical and social implications of computing. The course emphasizes both objectoriented and imperative problem solving and design using the Java language.

The Delbarton Incubator: Entrepreneurial Studies

Delbarton Virtual Science Fair poster. This event attracted over 260 projects from 50 New Jersey high schools during the Covid-19 pandemic in spring 2020.

In this course, Delbarton inspires entrepreneurship by challenging students to conceptualize an original product idea, and then develop it. Students use their engineering skills to design, create, test and improve their prototypes. They also develop business and marketing plans, and design e-commerce websites. Many of the products are 3D printed, or have 3D printed parts, and are assembled in the Delbarton makerspace.

Additional STEM Clubs and Activities Research in Science Club This popular Club invites students to enjoy science camaraderie and apply scientific knowledge learned in class to contribute actively to scientific development. The Club sponsors and guides students in a number of introductory-to-advanced level scientific research projects each year at Delbarton, and matches students with high-level outside science research internship opportunities. The Club also runs a year-round science-focused speakers’ series, and hosts an annual science fair. Our 2020 science fair, using a custom-designed online platform during the Covid pandemic, attracted over two hundred and sixty projects from fifty New Jersey high schools.

First Tech Challenge

First Tech Challenge is a renowned national/international competition that promotes competition and teamwork while tasked with difficult and exciting robotics, engineering, and artificial intelligence challenges. In the past, Delbarton competed annually in the Panasonic Creative Design Challenge in robotics and often won 1st place. This year, we have a top team working on our First Tech robot, and look forward to competing successfully in this competition.

Greener Wave Environmental Club In this Club, Delbarton students participate in interesting environmental science studies and conservation projects, while raising awareness of environmental stewardship issues across campus. The Club challenges students to be good stewards of creation as a basic human responsibility. Management of outdoor habitats on campus is a perennial activity.

A photo taken by a weather research balloon that was launched live and witnessed by all students during a Morning Meeting, then tracked by members of the Delbarton Research in Science Club.

School-wide Engineering Challenges Students in all grades during the fall, winter and spring terms are invited, under the auspices of the Engineering & Design Club, to participate in a series of engineering challenges throughout the year. These competitions include designing rope-traversing robots, gliders, swimming robots, spy-bots, battlebots and more. Boys are allotted several weeks to design their robots, and then compete for prizes.

POD Club (Physicians One Day Club) This Club encourages, educates and connects students who are interested in becoming doctors and surgeons one day. The club hosts a lively speakers’ series, sponsors road trips to health care facilities and facilitates internships with doctors and medical personnel at area medical practices and medical centers.
