Restoring peace of mind throughout COVID-19

ServiceMASTER has been a leader in the restoration industry serving the greater Edmonton area for over 18 years. Providing peace of mind to businesses and homeowners in the wake of a natural disaster or catastrophic weather event is our top priority. Our company’s involvement with both the flooding in High River (2013) and the Fort McMurray wildfires (2016) prepared us to react immediately when the world was hit with a global pandemic we now know as COVID-19. Our first call to action was to establish a team of advisors who could sift through information as it became available, and who were tasked to review the recommendations from health experts, sometimes daily. We needed to educate ourselves on what we were dealing with. We needed to protect and train our staff to ensure we could continue providing emergency services to our customers with minimal risk for all parties involved. Our staff, in turn, needed to adopt a more fluid mentality as the guidelines were rolled out and new practices put into place. Practices included placing our field crews into cohort groups to help to limit potential exposures; reducing the amount of paperwork being passed within our office; and obtaining and distributing PPE for our field staff and project managers, just to highlight a few. We then needed to determine which positions were essential to continue working within our office, and which positions we could transition to working from home. This was no small task as each employee has individual needs and environments they work best in. We called upon our IT staff to assist their fellow employees in setting up their ‘home offices’. Logistically, this presented a few challenges because not everyone is as tech-savvy as the next; however, our employees proved to be quite resilient and patient while we worked out all the kinks. Once we had a plan in place to protect our staff and continue our usual business, we were left to embrace the inevitable along with the rest of the world. As we watched the case numbers rise,
