Point Hope Maritime in Victoria, B.C
By Riccardo Regosa, General Manager
Tugs are the unsung heroes of the marine transportation highway pushing and pulling barges up and down the pacific coast from Santiago to Alaska to Hawaii, and everything in between battling weather and powering the blue economy and international rrade. In the last few years, Point Hope Maritime, located on Victoria Harbour on southern Vancouver Island has become the ‘go to’ shipyard for tugs. Part of the Ralmax Group of Companies since 2003, Point Hope is reaping the benefits of two decades of modernization investments in environmental management systems, new docks, and capacity-building technology and infrastructure including the 2018 acquisition of the Esquimalt Dry Dock Company (EDC) at the Esquimalt Graving Dock. Both yards provide reliable, quality ship repair, conversion, retrofit, refit and maintenance services. Their combined capacity enables them to accommodate vessels from 20 to 350 metres and they proudly work on a wide range of vessels that include ships for the Canadian Navy and Coast Guard, B.C. Ferries, pilot vessels, fishing vessels, and a growing number of tugs and barges from Canada and the US.
While Point Hope Maritime’s skilled professionalism, project management expertise, and dedication to client goals have earned them a strong base of repeat clients, it is the seamless delivery of integrated services from machining to electrical to paint that sets them apart allowing clients to benefit from the efficiencies of one-stop service. Point Hope Maritime’s supplier relationships further strengthen their value proposition. For example, Point Hope Maritime works closely with state-of-the-art manufactures for deck equipment such as DMT Marine Equipment. When it comes to tugs, Point Hope specializes in terminal tugs, conventional tugs, and ATB tugs welcoming vessels up to 1,200 tonnes with drafts up to six metres. Larger ocean-going anchor handling tugs over 1,200 tonnes are serviced at EDC.
Point Hope values and respects relationships built on trust. In 2019, Point Hope Maritime General Manager, Riccardo Regosa, who spent 17 years working for the renown shipbuilder Damen, entered into a strategic partnership with his former employer bringing Damen’s world-class expertise to Point Hope Maritime enabling important knowledge transfer and professional development opportunities working with the latest technology such as industry advancements in hybrid technology. Most of Damen’s warranty service work in Western Canada is undertaken by Point Hope Maritime. This partnership with one
of the main tug builders in the world means that Point Hope, together with Damen, can also reliably provide tug clients with optimal life-cycle technical support.
“We are a versatile, mid-sized shipyard, and we are proud of our quality work and our relationships.
At Point Hope Maritime, handshakes still matters and our word counts,” says Riccardo Regosa, General Manager, Point Hope Maritime. Ü “Point Hope Maritime completed an intermediate docking on one of our vessels. They have a great workforce and facilities, and the project was on time and on budget; excellent job.”
