Comprehensive service: Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance delivers on all counts

By Melanie Franner

What began in 1928 as a small roofingmaterials manufacturing plant in Cleveland, Ohio, has grown into a diversified North American company with specialized divisions to service all types of customers and their varied roofing needs. Today, the company employs more than 460 people in Canada, with 150 of them being dedicated to the company’s roofing division alone.

“Tremco’s Roofing and Building Maintenance division offers a breadth of roofing and building envelope, general contracting and service solutions designed to meet the most critical facility management and financial needs of owners, managers and architects alike,” explains Mike Vercammen, western regional manager. “From roofing system replacement to comprehensive facility-asset management, Tremco is uniquely qualified with leading products and services to deliver solutions across North America.”

Having maintained a strong presence in Canada since 1929, Tremco is in the enviable position of having established one of the largest networks of highly trained, company-employed field advisors. The company’s Roof and Building Maintenance Division boats 42 experienced field advisors and 31 technical representatives across the country. It also has divisional offices/manufacturing facilities in Toronto and Montreal, with a field office in Waterloo.

The Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance Division draws on the strength of both its parent company, RPM, Inc., and its service division, Weatherproofing Technologies Canada (WTC). The former is a multi-national holding company with subsidiaries that manufacture and market high-performance coatings, sealants and specialty chemicals, while the latter is focused solely on providing specialized management programs for roofing assets, such as: • Roof Condition Assessment Survey; • Infrared Scanning – Thermocore; • Preventive Maintenance and Housekeeping Program; • Leak Investigation and Remedial

Maintenance; • Emergency Leak Response; • Web-Based Roof Management; • Canam Building Envelope Services; and • SkyBEAM (this service, introduced in Canada just this year, is a groundbreaking program that uses small, unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with high-resolution thermographic and video cameras to help customers locate areas of wet insulation in the roof system and where their facilities may be leaking energy through gaps in the roof, walls and windows).

“As a conscientious building manager, it is an economic imperative to secure maximum value for each and every investment related to your building asset,” states Vercammen. “In roofing, this can be a very confusing undertaking, with countless system and consulting alternatives. Your best option is not found in price, or in which manufacturer possesses material with the lowest melt-point or membrane-recovery after elongation. In our competitive marketplace, there is often little to distinguish

between the well-designed and installed roof assembly. It is the service, support and knowledge of your roofing partner that is the true indicator of value.”

As one of the leading innovators and providers of roofing systems, Tremco has found a way to circumvent the need for schools to complete their roofing projects during the short – and costly – summer months when classrooms are typically idle. The company’s cold-process options allow roofing to be applied in occupied buildings before and after summer recess by reducing the common disruptions of fumes, offensive odours and the risk of fire.

Unlike traditional roofing systems, which require torches and hot kettles during application, the cold-process roofing system is applied using a cold adhesive, which creates a durable, thoroughly watertight roof, able to withstand rigorous winters. Many schools have taken advantage of this process to conduct roofing projects while the facilities remain in session.

Tremco’s Roofing and Building Maintenance Division is no stranger to innovation. The company was involved with the Dr. David Suzuki Public School, the first and only educational facility in Canada to be built to a LEED Platinum standard. The Windsor, Ontario, school incorporates many “green” features, among them a “green and white” roof.

The green roof consists of three defined areas: an accessible outdoor teaching area for interactive learning; an accessible vegetated roof area with a boardwalk and sitting area; and a nonaccessible area comprised of wild flowers, native grasses and bird houses to attract nesting song birds.

Tremco also installed a cold-applied, built-up “white roof” roofing system that eliminated the need for hot-application techniques. This reflective roof system, along with the green roof system, helped to obtain LEED points for the building’s eventual LEED Platinum certification.

STROngER ThAn ITS CORE

Tremco’s Roofing and Building Maintenance Division has proven itself to be a leading innovator of roofing systems and services within Canada in its own right. This strong competitive position is further strengthened by the association with its affiliated entities, which enables Tremco to draw upon an unparalleled array of expertise and experience.

The company may owe its roots to a small entity founded in 1928, but time and experience have shown that it has grown into much more than the sum of its parts. Tremco’s Roofing and Building Maintenance Division is one of the largest in Canada. And the educational sector represents a significant share of its total business – approximately 30 per cent – and growing. b
