Green battery materials to power the energy revolution Spotlight on Nouveau Monde Graphite’s Matawinie Project

To qualify its graphite concentrate and improve processes, Nouveau Monde is already operating a demonstration plant which significantly derisks the Matawinie project. / Afin de qualifier son concentré de graphite et d’améliorer ses procédés, Nouveau Monde opère déjà une usine de démonstration permettant de réduire les risques associés au projet.

With its bold vision for carbon-neutrality and circular economy, Nouveau Monde plans to deploy an all-electric fleet for its mining operations – a world’s first for an open-pit project. / Avec sa vision audacieuse de carboneutralité et d’économie circulaire, Nouveau Monde prévoit déployer une flotte entièrement électrique pour ses opérations minières – une première mondiale pour une mine à ciel ouvert.

From electric cars to energy storage, clean tech and fuel cells, our landscape is evolving at a fast pace to face today’s environmental challenges. And while innovative technologies are developed in labs and plants, the mining community is preparing for a surge in critical minerals and metals demand to meet these booming markets. 150 kilometres north of Montreal, Nouveau Monde Graphite is engaged in sustainably developing its flagship property, the Matawinie mining project, which includes 319 mining claims covering 17,585 hectares in Saint-Michel-des-Saints, in which the company owns a 100 per cent interest. With its bold vision for carbonneutrality and circular economy, Nouveau Monde plans to deploy an all-electric fleet for its mining operations – a world’s first for an open-pit project.

The company is set to become North America’s largest producer of natural flake graphite, anode material for lithium-ion batteries, and other value-added graphite products with the industry’s lowest environmental footprint. matawinie

The project is unique in multiple ways. The company has put forward innovative design criteria, including co-disposal of tailings and progressive remediation to minimize the project’s environmental footprint.

To qualify its graphite concentrate and improve processes, Nouveau Monde is already operating a demonstration plant which significantly derisks the project. The platform also serves to train employees and test new innovative technologies.

Earlier this year, the company published an updated pitconstrained mineral resource estimate for the west zone of its deposit. The resource estimate includes a 25.6 per cent increase in the combined measured and indicated mineral resource categories with a minimal change to the new resource pit footprint and mineralization that remains open at depth and both to the north and south.

Nouveau Monde is currently advancing detailed engineering for its mine and concentrator as the government’s environmental assessment comes to an end. A ministerial decree authorizing the project is expected before the end of the year. Commercial production is targeted for 2023. From mine to market

Nouveau Monde is also developing a line of specialty products ranging from expandable graphite (for industrial intumescent applications, such as an additive to roofing membranes and construction materials) to spherical graphite, which is an essential component in lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles, energy storage solutions and consumer technology applications.

Thanks to its vertically integrated business model that covers the entire value chain, the company is harnessing the full potential of natural graphite in a responsible way.
