Le origini della materia Il marmo, dal greco màrmaros, con il suo significato di “pietra splendente”, è stato impiegato fin dall’antichità per la scultura e per l’architettura. Il basso indice di rifrazione della calcite presente nel marmo permette alla luce di “penetrare” nella sua superficie prima di essere riflessa, creando una luminosità che lo ha reso particolarmente apprezzato, soprattutto dagli scultori (uno per tutti: Michelangelo Buonarroti). Tuttavia, essendo un materiale massiccio e pesante, anche se pregiato, il suo uso nell’arredamento è stato limitato. Infatti, lastre di peso accettabile per ottenere componenti d’arredamento dovrebbero avere spessore inferiore a 10mm, risultando però così poco resistenti a sforzi di flessione e taglio, e quindi sottoposti a fessurazioni e rotture. Dopo anni di ricerche e sperimentazioni Janus Italia ha brevettato un pannello multistrato compatto, denominato Jastone®, di spessore totale a partire da 5mm, formato da un supporto rigido in vetro, tessuto legante trasparente antisfondamento, e 3mm di marmo. The origins of the material Marble, from the Greek màrmaros, meaning “shining stone”, has been used since ancient times in architecture and sculpture. The low refractive index of the calcite allows the light to get “inside” the stone surface before being refracted, so creating a brightness which always made it particularly appreciated, mostly by sculptors (one for all, Michelangelo Buonarroti). Yet, being it a massive and heavy material, even though valuable, its use in the field of interior decoration has rather been limited at all times. As a fact, marble panels of acceptable weight, in order to be used for furnishing components, should have a thickness lower than 10 mm, so resulting not much resistant to bending and shearing stress, therefore subject to cracking, splitting and breakages. After several years of researches and tests, Janus Italia patented a compact multi-layer panel, called Jastone®, in total thickness as from 5 mm, made up by a rigid glass support, a transparent shatter-proof binder stuff and, finally, 3 mm of actual marble. The depth of the visual impact is quite surprising, for the light spreading through crystals and veins of the marble, so creating unique and unrepeatable effects. Lorenzo Fedrigoli Architetto
