MADE IN PA: REVIVING DOMESTIC MANUFACTURING
Pennsylvania has always been one of the best places on the planet to make things, but the future of manufacturing is changing. Investments in new, innovative industries are needed to create high-wage jobs for Pennsylvania’s workers and ensure fair trade that holds countries like China accountable.
In this issue of In Union, we’ll explore how domestic manufacturing is being revitalized here in Pennsylvania.
INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE:
BRINGING MANUFACTURING JOBS AND NEW INDUSTRIES TO PA
President Biden and Senator Bob Casey are bringing good-paying manufacturing jobs back to Pennsylvania and helping to drive down prices. In just the last few years, meaningful legislation has been passed that secures investments from the Biden Administration to strengthen critical supply chains and create thousands of good-paying jobs across the Commonwealth.
Historic investments in manufacturing are happening across Pennsylvania, including:
With Senator Casey’s leadership, the North Central Pennsylvania Manufacturing Sector was awarded a $400,000 grant through the CHIPS and Science Act. This investment will solidify the region’s position as a leader in the pressed metal industry, helping to create hundreds of good-paying jobs and boosting the economy.

Senator Casey worked with President Biden to deliver $10 million in funding for Pittsburgh-based Catalyst Connection to support small business manufacturers in the region. The investment, made possible through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, will help these manufacturers expand and succeed in clean energy and green technology sectors.

Senator Casey helped to facilitate the Biden Administration’s $75 million investment in Croda’s new biomanufacturing facility in Lamar. The new facility will manufacture lipid systems for new therapeutic drugs, helping to expand U.S. capacity and create good-paying jobs in the region.

Senator Casey secured nearly $400 million in funding for Eos Energy Enterprises in Turtle Creek to boost manufacturing of their zinc-bromine batteries. This investment from the Biden Administration supports the construction of next-generation American-made battery systems, helping to transition to 100% U.S.-sourced materials by 2026.

The Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub in Southeastern PA and the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub in Southwestern PA will create 40,000 jobs and position Pennsylvania as a leader in the energy economy of the future. Senator Casey fought to secure these critical manufacturing hubs that will promote significant economic growth across the Commonwealth.

PENNSYLVANIA WORKER VOICES
We need to bring back manufacturing jobs in the United States to drive down prices. Our supply chains need to be housed here at home, rather than outsourced abroad.”
The Infrastructure Bill… has been great for my industry…. So it’s been great for my membership, and we’re looking forward to way more projects and rebuilding Pennsylvania’s infrastructure.”
—Rahine W., Laborers’ Local 57, Philadelphia
So just trying to find out new ways to put people to work in our industry is key, and seeing how the Biden Administration could do that or help do that. I think they’ve done a good job so far with the introduction of hydrogen in the city of Philadelphia, and other major infrastructure projects around the 30th Street Station.”
—TJ L., Norristown
We need to make life a little bit easier for American workers: to stop the bad trade deals, pass a middle-class tax cut, and invest in good jobs that pay a solid wage.”

HOW LOCAL LABOR UNIONS ARE HELPING MEMBERS BUY HOMES
The Philadelphia Inquirer recently highlighted some benefits unions provide members when purchasing a home, like pairing members with real estate agents and lenders who can provide down-payment assistance and competitive loan offers. Local unions also provide home-buying seminars on improving credit and funding options, purchase rebates, discounted homeowners insurance, and discounts on moving vans and supplies.
Members of unions affiliated with AFL-CIO can opt into Union Plus, which offers members no-interest loans to help pay their mortgage if they are laid off or on strike. For more information, visit UnionPlus.org.
