WELCOME TO JUNE 2012 Welcome to the June issue of The Dell Directory. It certainly now feels like summer is here, I’m sure everyone took advantage of the warm sunshine? My two children had a great time splashing in and out of the paddling pool in the garden. They say it’s best to make the most of the lovely sunshine in Bonnie Scotland! This month we have an interesting article from the Colinton Community Conversation Trust’s on their next project and it’s connection with Robert Louis Stevenson pg 28 & 29. Also this month Colinton Village Events are publicising the ever popular event ‘Art in the Park’ see pg 14. For the first time in the magazine we also have some home watch property news for you from Stewart Black a local ESPC estate agent on pg32. There are quite a few events happening in the local area this month so please take a look at the What’s On pages for upcoming events. Congratulations to S. McFarlane, Bonaly Rise who was the winner of the May 2012 crossword well done! Remember to enter our prize crossword this month to win £20.00 cash. Thank you for taking the time to read through the magazine and supporting local businesses. Please get in touch if you have a local event or article, I would love to hear from you. Til next month for the JulAug issue! Ann Brydon. The Dell Directory is distributed in the following areas:Colinton Mains, Dreghorn, Redford, Bonaly, Campbell Park, Woodhall, Torphin, Spylaw and Pentland.

ART IN THE PARK 2012 Art in the Park is Colinton’s largest annual community event and will take place this year on Sunday September 2nd or September 9th. For those of you who may not be familiar with our alternate date policy, we have organised it this way from the event’s inception (way back in 2006!) in the hopes that if the first Sunday’s forecast was not good, surely the following Sunday would bring sunshine. This ‘logic’ has served us well and we have never had to cancel the event despite our less than reliable weather! The day will run from 11am to 5pm in historic Spylaw Park. The event is organised by Colinton Village Events (CVE) Group and encompasses a wide array of handmade arts & crafts, children’s entertainment, a dog show, an all-day performance area plus lots of delicious food. 2012 will be its 7th year – attendance numbers have increased every year so that we literally fill Spylaw Park. We are also pleased to announce a very special and brand new addition to Art in the Park 2012. CVE Group will team up with Mark Medcalf FRICS of Mark Medcalf Associates (Chartered Art and Antique Surveyors) to bring you ‘Antiques in the Park’. Visitors can bring along two items to be valued for a £6 fee, with proceeds used to fund community events/projects. We are now taking applications from potential stallholders – we are looking for interesting handmade arts/crafts/food as well as those offering children’s activities. Performers are also being signed up and we are hoping for a wide variety once again. School/community groups are encouraged to participate. Art in the Park is an ideal venue to showcase art, recruit members to local clubs/societies, perform for an enthusiastic public, develop an interest in antiques, or even to participate in our fun dog show! Please email colintonvillage@gmail.com for an application form or visit www.colintonvillage.com for further information. You can also find us on Facebook.

Wait ‘Til Your Father Gets Home Mother’s Day is always a doddle to sort out: flowers, some chocs and smother her with cuddles. With June comes Father’s Day and suddenly we’re all stumped. We’ve put together a selection of books where fathers figure. Some will make you laugh, whilst others will have you crying with pity or frustration. Why not pop one in the post and start up a conversation with the old man? Harry Silver Man and Boy Tony Parsons Harry Silver’s life is turned upside down when the boy in him has a one night stand. Suddenly his marriage is over, he’s lost his job and he’s bringing up his son on his own. Mirroring Parson’s own life, this is the story of a 30 year old TV executive who’s forced to grow-up. This hilarious comic novel is wonderfully written and portrays the highs and lows of the touching and often tender relationship between a father and son. Will Harry ever reach maturity? Only time will tell.

Atticus Finch To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee Scout and Jem Finch have been raised by their lawyer father Atticus in the southern town of Maycomb during the Great Depression. Atticus has the respect of both his children and the local community until he decides to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. Incensed by injustice and racial inequality, Atticus takes on the whole town’s prejudices and finally wins a place in everyone’s hearts.

King Lear William Shakespeare Talk about the original ‘daddy’s girls’. King Lear decides to divide his estate between his three daughters based on how they flatter him, this apparently proving who loves him best. It’s a bit of a recipe for disaster, and Lear quickly descends into madness. Cordelia is the only daughter not to play along and is promptly disinherited. It’s a tragic story of misplaced fatherly love. Our advice to dads: read the cards from your children carefully!

Willy Loman Death of a Salesman Arthur Miller Arthur Miller’s ultimate tragic hero Willy Loman is a salesman at the end of his career. Miller wanted to capture the struggles of the ‘everyman’ by creating this ‘low-man’. It raises questions as to what makes a man great. Willy is a truly flawed character, constantly dispensing terrible advice to his two sons, Biff and Happy. He fails to see the love his family feels for him and this is the real tragedy. To the last,

he strives to leave something for his boys so that they at least, can live out the American Dream. Allie Fox The Mosquito Coast Paul Theroux The young Charlie Fox documents the time spent in the Honduras jungles after his father Allie uproots the family and turns his back on American capitalism and consumerism. The book charts the unravelling of Allie as he strives to find a better life for his ‘tribe’. There’s no doubt that Allie’s behaviour is erratic and maniacal but his sense of adventure and inventiveness means you can’t write him off as a bad father. Dante Boys Don’t Cry Malorie Blackman What happens when fatherhood is thrust upon you? Dante’s waiting for his A-level results but instead, finds his baby daughter on the doorstep. Her mother can’t cope and Dante’s forced to face up to his responsibilities. Battling with social preconceptions and the realisation that his plans have to change, this is a rare book that tells the story of teenage pregnancy from the father’s point of view. COLINTON MARKET PLACE Have you been to Colinton Market-Place yet? Hundreds of you have visited us already, and we hope that hundreds more of you will come and find us.

With free admission, complimentary tea and coffee, and crafts for the children, do you really need any more to encourage you along? Perhaps you might be enticed by the handmade chocolate, the children’s dresses, the driftwood gifts, the artwork, the costume jewellery, the silver jewellery, the homeware gifts, the photography, the cakes, the glassware, the cards, the tweed gifts, the bags, the babyclothes, the wooden pens, or the flowers. Or perhaps, you would simply like to meet old friends, and new, in a place that is set in the heart of Colinton. And, even with all of that on offer, you will also be helping the stallholders to raise money for Fresh Start (SC029184), an Edinburgh based charity that helps people who have been homeless. The first market took place in November, and it has grown massively since then. In March we had 230 visitors, and we almost reached that number again in May, despite it being a holiday weekend. So, if you come 22

along, you certainly won’t be on your own! And the market has already become a victim of its own success. We have 93 stall holders on our books and, inevitably, to those of you who are would-be stallholders, we can’t give everyone a stall straightaway. But, we do try our very best to say yes to everybody. It might be that you can’t have a stall at one market, but we would try to get you a stall in the next few months. And, of course, this high number of stall holders means that the market is always evolving, with stalls always changing - no two markets are the same. But, beyond the stalls, we want the market to have a place within the community of Colinton. The introduction of children’s crafts has increased the number of families coming to the market. A number of local people have taken small stalls to raise funds for charities, or to advertise classes. Braidburn School have taken a stall to sell some of their own craft, and other schools

Please mention the DELL DIRECTORY when responding to adverts

01/06/2012 13:46

have been approached to offer their pupils the same experience. So, what next? Work has started to create a website and a Facebook site for the market. We continue to advertise the market through posters, flyers, banners, newspapers, radio stations and magazines just like this. But, the best form of advertising is through word of mouth. So, if you like the market, please tell all your friends to come too! From small beginnings come great things … or so we hope!

Colinton Market-Place takes place on the first Saturday of each month, 2-4pm, at St Cuthbert’s Episcopal Church Hall, Westgarth Avenue, Colinton. If you would like to apply for a stall at Colinton Market-Place, please email us at colintonmarketplace@gmail.com. Please note that there will be no market in September as Colinton’s Art in the Park, organised by local group (CVE), will take place on Sunday 2nd September, or Sunday 9th September (if bad weather forces a postponement). www.facebook.com/ColintonMarketPlace

ENHANCING COLINTON’S HERITAGE A PUBLIC ART PROJECT Colinton Community Conservation Trust’s next project will illustrate aspects of Colinton’s history and its connection with Robert Louis Stevenson through works of Public Art. Did you know that since 2004 the Trust has completed several significant projects in Colinton? The first of these was the Triangle public garden, an area between Bridge Road and Woodhall Road where a new footpath, called the New The pro posed o rnamenta Drovers Path, was constructed and the garden Long Ste l steel a ps inscri rch at th bed ‘A W e top of alk with restored. The most recent project was the the Robert Lo uis Steve nson’ restoration of historic Railings opposite the RBS, designed by Phoebe Traquair. She was a leading figure in the Arts and Crafts movement and lived in Spylaw Bank Road.

A section of the proposed Timeline railings above the Triangle Public Gardens

The Public Art Project is taking shape as follows. Ornamental Railings beside the Triangle, in the centre of the village, will display a Timeline of aspects of Colinton’s history, An ornamental Arch at the top of the ‘Long Steps’, between the Colinton Inn and Fanelli’s will be inscribed ‘A Walk with Robert Louis Stevenson’. Plaques with verses from ‘A Child’s Garden of Verses’ will be mounted on the walls of the Long Steps, leading to a statue of RLS as a boy outside the Church gates. The first phase, clearing 28

The Trust has received planning consent. It has the support of the Colinton Amenity Association, Colinton Local History Society, Colinton Parish Church, and the RLS Club. It is now looking at ways to fund this exciting Project. Applications have been made to grant making bodies. We have received generous donations from organisations and individuals. However, to reach the target of over £150.000 we need the support of the community. More details about the Project are on the website www.colinton-conservation.org.uk. There will be an Exhibition, from 18th to 30th June in the Swing Cafe in the Dell Room , Colinton Parish Church. There will also be a presentation there on Saturday 23rd June at 11.00a.m. Everyone is very welcome. If you would like to support this exciting Project, please send a donation to the Trust’s Treasurer at 42 Pentland Avenue, Colinton, Ediburgh EH13 0HY.

HOMEWATCH PROPERTY NEWS “Home Reports”: The Pros and Cons Despite the allegations of corruption, the Statutory Notice debacle that has unfolded at Edinburgh City Council during recent months can act as a reminder to us all that our homes do need ongoing maintenance. Sooner or later, a poorly maintained property will cost us dearly and this is a fact highlighted further by the documents known as Home Reports.

without actually inspecting the properties firsthand. This is bad news for the buyers that are missing good opportunities, so I always recommend that prospective buyers visit a property first and then read the Home Report, assuming they are still interested.

Introduced by the Scottish government over 3 years ago amidst considerable controversy, Home Reports have their benefits (such as saving buyers the cost of instructing surveys on multiple properties), but they also have their limitations. My own observations as an estate agent strongly suggest that many home sellers and buyers are, unfortunately, missing opportunities because of a lack of understanding of, or an indifferent attitude toward these documents.

The situation is worse for the SELLERS, who may not be getting the viewers their homes deserve; Lack of viewers often means a painfully slow and stressful house sale or no sale at all. Unfortunately many prospective home sellers appear to be ill-advised (or not advised at all) in advance of getting their Home Report. The result is that many small issues that could have been fixed quite easily are instead overlooked, thereby leading to those perceived “bad marks” in the Home Report, and subsequently a lack of viewers.

There are significant numbers of prospective BUYERS making premature and inaccurate judgements about properties based solely upon the Home Reports. By then choosing NOT to visit, they are bypassing properties that could often make excellent homes with little or no added cost to put right their perceived faults. It’s not that the Home Reports are inaccurate (although that’s not impossible), but that the buying public have insufficient knowledge or experience to make good comparisons between one Report (and the home it represents) and the next, especially

It should also be borne in mind that surveyors are human beings, and so there is always an element of subjectivity in any assessment.

As a home owner you will be obliged to pay for a Home Report when you decide to sell your property. But the real cost may be not so much in buying the Report itself as in the effect its contents have on potential buyers. In an environment where home sellers are competing for the attention of buyers, it is prudent to be alert to the small issues that could make a big difference. A free pre-sale evaluation from locally experienced solicitor-estate agents is usually the best place to start your house move.

Some recent property data for EH13 (First Quarter of 2012) • Most expensive house sale recorded: £635,000 (3-bed) • Least expensive house sale recorded: £65,000 (studio flat) • Average of all sales during period: £203,000 • Number of property sales during period: 38 Typically, many more properties come onto the market around Easter time and there are now 72 available via the ESPC (at mid May)

HomeWatch Property News is written by Stewart Black, a local ESPC estate agent specialising in this area. To enquire about topics mentioned in this newsletter, or if you are considering buying or selling, please call Stewart directly on 07771 757911 Note: Statistical figures quoted are based on ESPC data only. ESPC sales represent the vast majority of property transactions in the region.

The Handy Household

Clever Ways with a Sprinkling of Salt

Salt is most commonly used as a flavour enhancer, but this household staple is much more versatile than that. Salt has an affinity to water and can draw moisture out of many foods. What’s more, grains of table salt are very hard, which means they can act as an abrasive. These properties give salt a variety of uses around the home. When boiling eggs, a pinch of salt in the water will prevent the shells from cracking and adding a pinch when beating eggs or cream will make them whip faster and higher. Moreover, if you rub salt into the cavities of chicken or turkey, it will help to keep the bird moist while cooking. Staying in the kitchen, washing green leafy vegetables in salt water will easily remove all the dirt and if you need to chill a bottle of wine quickly, just place it in an ice bucket with alternate layers of ice and salt, fill with water and your tipple will be ready in about ten minutes. Even red wine stains are no problem to remove - simply cover the stain with salt and pour over boiling water. You can also use salt to remove any sticky residue on the bottom of an iron, by running the hot iron over plain paper sprinkled with salt. And if you are caught out by frost and ice, table salt can be used as a substitute for rock salt, to de-ice paths and pavements. So with all these handy uses, you might want to think twice before tossing that spilled salt over your shoulder.

Corfu

Corfu is the greenest of the Greek islands, festooned with vines and olive groves and tall cypress trees pointing straight up to the sky. Gentle shores in the east, mostly shingle, sheer cliffs but gorgeous sands in the west, lowlands in the south, mountains in the north, the scenery changes with every bend of the road.

Corfu Highlights

Framed by wooded hills on the west coast, Paleokastritsa is one of the most idyllic spots, all crystal clear waters and crescent-shaped bays meandering around cliffs and rocks. Pink villas peep through the trees like giant candyfloss, boats sail around the coast and into gaping caves, most exciting the ‘blue eye’ where shoals of fish swim in a luminous patch of blue water. Up on the headland, crowds head for the pocket-sized monastery, keen to set eyes on precious icons, light candles and enjoy panoramic views over land and sea. In the distance, meadows spread across the slopes, sprinkled with pink orchids and wild gladioli and isolated farms tucked in lemon groves. There are secluded coves, sweeping sands and quiet trails where rosemary and oregano leave their scent in the air. Meanwhile on the east coast, Kerkyra, the capital, stretches across a peninsula guarded by two

Venetian forts. The ‘Old Fortress’ is the most spectacular with ramparts and moat, courtyards, canons, museum and a lighthouse with dizzying views. Mainland Greece is just across the water and in the distance you can see Mount Pantokrator, Corfu’s highest point, just short of 3000 feet. Down town, the main square is occupied by a cricket ground, complemented by an English bandstand and the elegant Liston Arcade modelled on the Parisian rue de Rivoli. Bars and restaurants spread under the trees, horse-drawn carriages wait for custom and the Old Town beckons, a maze of paved lanes and stepped alleyways, tall buildings and spires jostling for space, hidden squares, souvenir stalls and balconies draped in laundry and flower pots. Cruise ships dock on the western pier, yachts bob at anchor while fishermen unload the early morning catch. A short distance from the capital is the stylish Achilles Palace, not a ruin of ancient Greece, as one might expect, but a flamboyant 19th century building in neo-classical style,

commissioned by Austrian Empress Sissi to nurse a broken heart. Achilles was her hero and painting and statues pay tribute among colonnades, stucco work and personal belongings of the empress and the next owner, Wilhelm II. But best of all is the fabulous panorama from the gardens, where you might feel just like the beautiful Sissi or James Bond, since the palace featured as a casino in ‘For Your Eyes only’. The Kanoni peninsula is just a stone’s throw away, home to ‘Mon Repos’, an elegant mansion built by the British and later, summer residence of the Greek royalty and birthplace of Prince Philip. Everyone is welcome to explore the grounds and house now exhibiting centuries of the island’s history. Excavations around the estate have unveiled vestiges of Paleopolis, the ancient city of Kerkyra. But it is at the end of the peninsula that you find Corfu’s most iconic image. Set on a tiny islet, the Vlacherna monastery comes straight out of a fairy tale, flanked by a single cypress tree and the mere pencil line of a gleaming causeway. by Solange Hando
