ith over 25 years experience caring for older people across Scotland, Lindemann Healthcare was established in 1995, with the aim to deliver care services to older people with the highest quality, which we all deserve. We believe that individuality should be the main basis of the care given within our Care Homes. In a nursing environment great attention is paid to activities of daily living. Each resident receives a careful assessment to identify what his or her individualised care should be. This allows care plans to be constructed to meet their specific needs. Our dedicated team aim to provide specialized care in a safe homely atmosphere where the residents are cared for with dignity and respect. This allows each resident to function at their optimum level where they can feel contented and “at home.

The Importance of your Hearing 865,500 people in Scotland have a hearing loss, which is 16% of the population. On average it takes someone with a hearing loss around 10 years to do something about it Katie and Martin know a lot about ears, with over 35 years’ experience between them. They run their own private hearing practice in Corstorphine, and are available to give you the very best independent advice on your hearing. You can rest assured that you will receive a five star service.
The invisible solution
“People tend to forget about getting their hearing checked, it’s a poor third behind eyes and teeth! Hearing loss happens in our ears, but affects many different aspects of our lives, for instance statistics show that people with a hearing loss tend to retire earlier. There is also a lot of discussion around new evidence which suggests that untreated hearing loss increases a person’s likelihood to develop dementia. We hear with our ears, but our brains understand speech, so to get a clear picture of a person’s complete auditory system, we include speech testing in our comprehensive assessments."
Our Services
Complimentary, comprehensive hearing assessments Professional wax removal using microsuction 30 day, home trials of the most advanced, discreet hearing solutions Informative talks to community groups

Movember: Because Men’s Health Matters
By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk
MOVEMBER.COM changing the face of mens health
Since 2003, ‘Movember’ has inspired 4 million moustaches worldwide. But what’s it really about? Let’s look behind the moustache. WHAT IS MOVEMBER? The November challenge asks men to grow moustaches and talk about their health, with the aim to increase awareness of men’s health issues and raise funds for the Movember Foundation, a global charity whose mission is “to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health”. The Foundation aims to reduce male mortality from prostate and testicular cancer and improve sufferers’ physical and mental health, and to reduce mortality from male suicide by reducing mental health discrimination and ensuring that men and boys understand how to stay mentally healthy, taking action early when they experience problems. So far, it has raised £346 million and financed 800 research and awareness programs in 21 countries. “In the last 10 years or so... we’ve built the largest global men’s health movement off the back of the simple act of growing a moustache and a sense of fun and mateship,” says Adam Garone, CEO and Co-Founder. WHY FOCUS ON MEN’S HEALTH? In 2011, the average UK life expectancy was 82.6 years for women but just 78.7 years for men, who were 14% more likely
16
to get cancer and 32% more likely to die from it. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in 25-49 year olds, but highly curable. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point. The Foundation believes the main reasons for men’s poor health are: • Lack of awareness and understanding of men’s health issues • Men’s reluctance to discuss their health and feelings or take action when they’re unwell • Engaging in risky activities • Mental health stigmas The Foundation’s most recent research showed that 99% of Movember participants talked to someone about their health, 75% were more aware of potential health issues and 62% had seen a doctor, or intended to, to discover their ‘key numbers’. THE MOVEMBER FOUNDATION’S ADVICE FOR MEN Know your key numbers – ‘one of the most important things you can do,’ whatever your age. Track your body mass index, weight, waistline measurement, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels. Know your family history – including illnesses suffered by family members who have passed away. Keep moving – maintain (or work up to) 20-30 minutes of moderate physical activity, 2-3
days a week, avoid sitting for too long and stay on the move.
Take action early – ‘Early diagnosis is often key to living a healthy life’. if there’s nothing wrong, your mind is put at rest. Attend that prostate examination and check your testes regularly (http://www.yourprivates.org.uk/ provides a useful guide). Don’t smoke- smoking doubles heart disease risk and makes you 20 times more likely to develop lung cancer.
Eat well – think moderation and variety. Choose fruits, vegetables, whole grains lean meats, poultry, fish, beans and nuts and minerals, and avoid foods and drinks with added sugars or high saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and salt.
Sleep well – lack of sleep and poor quality sleep can damage your immune system and increase appetite and vulnerability to stress.
Stay mentally healthy – spend time doing things you find enjoyable and relaxing. Be proactive about your mental health. Drink alcohol moderation
only
in
Wear sunscreen – and check skin changes with your doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment dramatically increases melanoma survival rates. To find out more, visit https:// uk.movember.com/

Best Tech for Christmas The Ten Best Tech Gifts for Christmas
Christmas is coming, and that means it’s shopping time - but what do you buy a gadget-crazy friend or relative? These are the best tech gifts for Christmas. 1. A TV streamer - Whether it’s Amazon’s £35 Fire TV stick or Google’s £30 Chromecast, a TV streamer can turn a flat screen TV into a smart TV. Amazon’s version gives you Amazon Prime Instant Video while Chromecast offers Netflix (if you subscribe). Both devices have a range of free services too. 2. FishHunter - Buying for a fisherman or woman? The £149 FishHunter is a sonar fish-finder that connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth and can find fish at depths of up to 120 feet - or you could buy the £100 WaterWolf HD fishing camera, which can record up to four hours of fishy footage at depths of up to 100m. 3. Windows 10 - If you didn’t like Windows 8 very much you’re not alone - but Windows 10 is much, much better and comes on a dizzying range of good quality, affordable laptops - for example, the superb HP Stream is £180. 4. TomTom Spark - Fitness trackers are everywhere, but the £189 TomTom Spark stands out from the crowd by offering music storage for 500 songs as well as sleep and activity tracking. Too
18
pricey? The excellent Fitbit Flex is £55. 5. Parrot drone - You can spend hundreds or even thousands of pounds on a drone quadricopter, but for £69 the Parrot Rolling Spider delivers an awful lot of fun for a relatively low price. It’s a flying drone, of course, but it can also roll along on removable wheels to perform acrobatics. 6. iPad Mini - The iPad Mini is the cheapest way to get the iPad experience, and its Retina display is a pleasure to look at. Prices start at £319. If that’s a bit steep, Tesco’s £99 Androidpowered Hudl 2 and Amazon’s £79 Kindle Fire HD are great value for money. 7. ZX Spectrum - The iconic eighties home computer is back for 2015 in two forms: the £100 Vega, which is designed purely for games and only has a few buttons, and the £89 Remastered, which is a bluetooth keyboard that can play old Spectrum programs. The Vega comes preloaded with hundreds of games, while the Remastered can potentially access 10,000 Spectrum titles. 8. Skylanders, Disney Infinity or Minecraft anything - The big games for children this year are Skylanders Superchargers and Disney Infinity 3.0, both of which are available for all
major consoles and which use interchangeable toys to unlock in-game characters. And then there’s Minecraft, the global phenomenon: the children probably have the game already but there’s a huge range of officially licensed merchandise to choose from including action figures, books and soft toys. 9. Smartwatch - It isn’t cheap prices start at £299 - but Apple’s watch is the prettiest and most desirable smartwatch around, although it’s useless without an iPhone. If your recipient has an Android phone the Moto 360 2 (£229) is the best-looking Android Wear, while the £95 Pebble Steel works with Apple and Android and has garnered rave reviews. 10. Gift cards - Not strictly tech, we know, but if you’re buying for someone who already has everything they want then iTunes, Google Play or Amazon gift cards are a good bet. iTunes cards are often sold with big discounts of up to 20%, so it’s worth hanging on for the deals before you buy. The Life List Sci-Fi Why? Science Fiction isn’t real - that’s what they tell me when I point out that Captain Jean Luc Picard may still have hidden Borg implants. But even if they’re right and it’s all made up, some things still don’t make sense. 1. In Terminator 2, how did the T-800 (Arnie) know there were weapons in the late Sarah Connor’s casket? John Connor never knew so who told the T-800 in the future? 2. How does John Tracy stay away in Thunderbird 5? Does Thunderbird 3 deliver regular supplies of strong coffee? 3. Jar-Jar Binks is the most annoying character in the second Star Wars trilogy (which
is really the first triology, sort of...). Why inflict that on the universe and adult sci-fi filmgoers, especially after the bitter memory of the Ewoks? Or was the comedy spoof Spaceballs correct when it talked about the power of merchandising? 4. If Dr Who had the whole of Time and Space to explore, why did he spend so much time in a quarry during the 1980s? 5. In the 1960 film version of The Time Machine, H George Wells takes three books with him back to the future (that would make a great film title). As his time machine still works, why not travel back and forth along the time corridor for regular shopping trips? 6. It’s just a suggestion, but in Time Cop, if the Time Enforcement Commission is so top secret it might be a good idea not to include a TEC badge on their uniforms. I’m done. Beam me up Scotty, as Kirk never actually said. By Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.co.uk

I
by Sonia Nicolson
grew up in Colinton, attending Firrhill High School and working in the Colinton Village shop. I got to know a lot of the community on my Saturday shifts and Sunday at Colinton Parish Church.
The beautiful city of Edinburgh and its architecture has always inspired me. There is inspiration everywhere and I am always jotting down ideas. Architecture is a massive part of me; the old and (sometimes) new, restorations and conversions, ephemeral architecture, it’s the way I think. I studied Architecture at De Montfort University before returning to Edinburgh to take up a one year work placement. I worked on some pretty interesting developments, some heavily affected by the recession and only nearing completion now. Being part of a design team was a great feeling and I love passing those buildings now, but the power driven, male dominated aspect of the job made me uncomfortable. At the end of my placement I was ready to leave but didn't know if I wanted to carry on my Architectural education. I invested my salary in a return ticket to Australia and planned a three month adventure. I flew to Kuala Lumpur and walked across the Petronius Towers bridge, took a bus to Singapore and admired the heritage and harbour, flew to Borneo and walked amongst orangutans, over to Australia and travelled the coast. It was the typical student
24
trip but my highlights were architectural and geological. One starry night on a dive boat on the Whitsundays, perspective fell back into place and I knew I had to complete my dream of becoming an Architect. I applied to the Masters programme at the Edinburgh College of Art. My year at ECA, mixing with fine artists, sculptors and illustrators, and in a studio overlooking the Castle was a fantastic, indulgent experience but one which exposed unhealthy competitiveness amongst my fellow egos. I completed the year and was offered a scholarship to travel to Japan and study under a leading Japanese architect. Who wouldn't jump at that?! I boarded a flight to Japan armed with ‘learn Japanese in six weeks’ loaded to my iPod and made one of the best stopovers I’ve ever planned and landed in Dubai for a personal tour of the Burj Al Arab. Onwards to Hiroshima where a Japanese student met me and took me to my tiny box apartment. I joined a government language exchange programme and was soon able to join in tutorial discussions and general studio chit chat. I worked on my work, helped students and assisted my sensei, Shinichi Ogawa, in projects. I travelled around Japan visiting some of the most tranquil and historical places I have ever been. Japan not only taught me a lot culturally but it also gave me a glimpse into the world of academic architectural practice and I was hooked. Reluctantly, I returned to the UK and fell into a practice becoming a Chartered Architect in the middle of the recession. I moved to a smaller practice by the castle working for one of the nicest bosses and was employed to create a feasibility study of a Listed Building to reinstate its ‘wings’, and have visited the building twice since it reopened. A recession, lack of new developments, and a bad case of the travel bug meant a new challenge was not far away. I got a phone call from a Singaporean design education group who interviewed me for a Faculty position with the aim of starting up a new

Campus in India. A whirlwind few weeks flew by and I was back on a plane to Singapore. Never in the seven years of training to become an Architect did I think I would find myself looking at drawings and discussing curtain wall fixtures, or a lack of, with contractors in Bangalore. It was incredibly exciting, incredibly frustrating but a fantastic, unique opportunity and one which is full of stories. It was India that sparked my entrepreneurial spirit; everywhere you go there is a new ‘start up’ and everyone has some kind of employment. I started layoutlines.com as a way of recording my time in India. I drew and make things as gifts so it seemed obvious to try out an online shop. I opened my Etsy shop with a drawing of Edinburgh Castle and it slowly filled with other prints and products. I am incredibly proud to now send my work all over the world. People contact me asking for a drawing of a particular building and tell me why its special to them, I create wedding venue drawings and do calligraphy for events. Through Etsy I’ve met some really inspiring people, fellow creative entrepreneurs who are thinking outside the box and doing all sorts of non traditional jobs, and I feel this is an important message for my students too.
I’m lucky to love both teaching and the practice of architecture. For the past four years I have been working as a senior lecturer at the Arts University Bournemouth and recently became a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I travel back to India as an external examiner, visiting schools and Universities to discuss best practice on British Council-led education programs. But even after all my travels, there is nothing like driving up the road to our family home in Colinton. I look forward to being home this Christmas and spending time with family and friends before I take on the next challenge. In the new year I’m heading off to Iceland to follow my heart, and to set up my own community for young designers. I’m taking layoutlines.com to the next level and will be creating online content to help support young designers by sharing my knowledge and experience. My Etsy shop will continue to grow, but there might be a Northern Lights piece coming soon! For more information please visit www.layoutlines.com or email sonia@layoutlines.com

What are the Signs of Dental Problems in Your Rabbit? It’s not necessarily tooth decay that causes dental problems in a rabbit. Teeth that grow at a rate of 2mm per week, combined with the wrong type of diet, are more likely to be at fault. Rabbits’ teeth should be ground down by their food, and if this doesn’t happen they can develop overgrown molars or spurs of enamel that cut into the soft tissue in their mouth.
PETS
Foods rich in fibre that also wear down the teeth, such as hay and dark green leafy vegetables, will stop incisors becoming too long. To help you spot the telltale signs of trouble, and deal effectively with your rabbit’s dental health, here are some of the signs to look out for. Lack of grooming Rabbits naturally groom themselves, and if yours has stopped grooming it can lead to a range of other problems including fly strike, a potentially fatal disease. Rabbits use their teeth during the grooming process, so lack of cleanliness on their part could mean that their teeth are sore.
To advertise call Ann on 07843 449441
Loss of weight It may be painful for them to eat, resulting in a rapid loss of weight. The abrasive nature of hay in particular could be causing them pain. Drooling If your rabbit has started to drool, it might be due to dental problems. Also look out for wetness on their front paws. Your vet should be able to smooth any enamel spurs, and keeping an eye on your rabbit’s general behaviour can also help to pinpoint problems. http://www.rabbitawarenessweek. co.uk/health/dental/ By Ann Haldon

Autumn Planning and Planting by Pippa Greenwood There is no doubt that the main growing season is over for the year and autumn is now very much with us, which makes it a perfect time to review exactly how your garden looks at this time of year and to do some planning and planting too. If everything is looking a bit glum, why not make sure that for years to come you have many rich autumnal shades of orange, red, yellow and gold to brighten things up? There are numerous trees, shrubs and climbers with brilliant autumn colour and now is the perfect time for planting, as the soil should still be relatively warm and considerably more moist than it was during summer. It is also a perfect time to shop for plants which you can enjoy at this time of year, giving you the chance to see the plants ‘in the flesh’ and find out which individual tints and hues you find the most attractive. Make sure that you check the growing requirements of the trees and shrubs you choose carefully and ensure that you can supply them with exactly what they need, as soil and site conditions can hugely influence autumn colour. For instance, one of my real favourites is the sweet gum or Liquidambar but this is unlikely to produce the striking colour for which it is renowned if planted in a
30
relatively shallow soil over chalk. You should also try to choose a relatively sheltered site for plants grown for autumn colour, avoiding the most windswept areas where strong winds will rapidly knock the leaves from the shrub or tree just when the plant has come into the best of its autumnal shades. The ultimate choice of plants will be largely determined by the conditions in and the size of your garden, so a trip to your local garden centre is worthwhile. The Japanese crimson glory vine (Vitis coignetiae) is a fabulous ornamental vine which can grow to a height of 90 feet, so can be used to train over trees or large buildings. Its toothed leaves turn a range of purple, crimson and reddish-orange colours in autumn. Some viburnums, including Viburnum dentatum, also have lovely autumn colours and for bright yellow autumn foliage then the witch hazels (Hamamelis and Fothergilla) are some of my favourites, although they prefer an acid soil. The numerous maples, particularly the Japanese maples, not only bring vibrant colours into your garden during autumn but being relatively small or very slow growing are suitable for most plots. There are lots of different types of Acer palmatum which bring lovely colour, including Acer palmatum
‘Lutesens’, which turns a rich yellowish gold, ‘Crimson Queen’, ‘Trompenburg’, ‘Garnet’ and ‘Seiryu’, ‘Osakazuki’, ‘Orange Dream’, ‘Heptalobum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum atropurpureum’, and also the beautiful leaves of Acer palmatum ‘Beni-Shidare’. Whatever you choose it is important to make sure that the plants’ root balls are thoroughly watered and teased out, before being placed in a well prepared planting hole. Plant at the correct depth, so that the shrub or tree is buried to the same depth as it was whilst in the compost. Always keep the soil just moist around the roots, both now and throughout next year, to help them get well established so you can enjoy them for years to come. Make vegetable growing fun and productive with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select your vegetable plants from www.pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants are delivered in May; what makes it unique is that Pippa will email you every week with lots of tips and help about what you’re growing, ensuring great results. It is great value and various pack sizes are available, e.g. up to 55 plants for just £29.00, plus that weekly advice. Gifts Cards are also available.

CHRISTMAS on the CORNER
FEATURING THE REINDEER PARADE!
CVE Group’s annual winter fair, Christmas on the Corner, is scheduled to take place on the evening of Wednesday, December 9th. For the first time it will (mostly) be held indoors in The Swing Café of Colinton Parish Church, Dell Road from 6.30pm to 9.00pm.
As we will be celebrating the event’s 5th year anniversary we have a special treat in store. We will witness Santa’s arrival by sleigh, accompanied by REAL, LIVE REINDEER (of course!) as they make their special journey along Dell Road/Spylaw Street at 6.30pm. Please attend this event and help us spread both Christmas and community cheer – you can expect live musical performances with mulled wine, hot cider and tasty refreshments. You might even win a prize at CVE’s tombola! Remember to be good so that you can enjoy a not-to-be missed opportunity to meet and greet Santa, Mrs. Claus, their elf helpers and a wee HERD OF REINDEER!

the pentland way
A WALK WITH HISTORY By Bob Paterson Publication Date 28 September 2015 The Pentland Way follows a twenty mile route from Dunsyre in South Lanarkshire to the hamlet of Swanston on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
For further information contact Bob Paterson at carlingnose@tiacali.co.uk or on 01383 417771 or John Stirling at j.stirling@btinternet or on 0131 449 3456. THE AUTHOR
The Pentland Hills have provided a home and a livelihood, often a hard one, for the last 5,000 years. There is evidence of ancient burial cairns, hill forts, the Roman occupation, and battles involving Covenanters. Mary, Queen of Scots, travelled through the Pentlands for military purposes; James IV did so while on pilgrimage and Charles X of France shot wildfowl on Pentland moors. Via Henry Cockburn, whose home was at Bonaly, there are links with the Scottish Enlightenment and literary associations with Allan Ramsay, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson. The life of the feisty Carlops shepherdess, Jenny Armstrong, has been recounted with the help of the distinguished contemporary artist, Victoria Crowe. There are tales involving monks, witches and a ghost. Andrew Thin, formerly Chairman of SNH, in his Foreword writes that the author: “describes the historical context encountered along ‘The Way’ at a level of detail that will fascinate and intrigue. There are nuggets to inspire the imagination on almost every page. Wanderings in the Pentlands, whether on foot or in an armchair, will never be quite the same again.”
Bob Paterson was introduced to the joys of walking in the Pentland hills by his parents in the late 1940s. His career in the army took him away from Scotland but when he retired he renewed his love of hill walking, albeit, initially, in higher hills. Later, when Munros seemed almost Himalayan, he returned to his ‘Hills of Home’. Bob is the author of Britain’s Strategic Nuclear Deterrent published by Frank Cass in 1997 and Pontius Pilate’s Bodyguard, a two volume history of The Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment) published by the regiment in 2000. In the late 1990s he contributed articles to Country Walking and Trail magazines. THE BOOK The book is being published by the Friends of the Pentland and all profits will be used by the Friends for charitable purposes. (See www.pentlandfriends. org.uk) The book consists of 100 A5 pages and some 85 illustrations almost all in colour. The book contains a detachable route finding supplement with map. Paperback copies are being sold at £10.00 plus P&P and orders should be sent to: Malcolm Patrick, 8 Laverockdale Park, Edinburgh EH13 0QE. Postage rates are £1.51 for one or two copies, £2.03 for three copies and £2.80 for four to nine copies.

Recipes/Food Notes
Cake and Bake Makes 16
Ready in 35mins plus cooling
Snickerdoodles
Ingredients: • 115g unsalted butter, softened • 100g dark muscovado sugar
These classic American cookies are crisp at the edges, chewy in the middle and have a delicious cinnamon sugar coating. Try them warm from the oven with a milkshake or hot chocolate – and if you need an excuse, America is celebrating Thanksgiving this month!
• 2 tbsp maple syrup • 175g self-raising flour • 1 tbsp granulated sugar • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
TIP Add some chopped pecans or toasted chopped hazelnuts to the cookie dough for a crunchy texture, or top with white or dark chocolate chips just before baking.
42
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F / Gas Mark 4. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. 2. Place the butter and muscovado sugar in a large bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until creamed. Beat in the maple syrup. Sift over the flour and beat in with the wooden spoon to form a rough dough. 3. Mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon on a flat plate. Divide and shape the dough into about16 walnut-sized balls (keep them roughly shaped – not smooth) and roll each ball in the cinnamon sugar. Place, well spaced, on the prepared baking sheets. Flatten each ball of mixture slightly with your fingertips. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 13-14 minutes, or until deep golden brown. Remove the baking sheets from the oven and sprinkle any remaining cinnamon sugar over the cookies. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool.

Spiced Winter Veg Soup Ready in 1hr 15 minutes
Serves 4
A hearty and warming soup made with seasonal winter root vegetables. Serve with thick slices of warm crusty bread for a filling lunch or supper.
Ingredients: • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped • 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed • 2 tsp medium curry paste • 300g carrots, peeled and diced • 250g swede, peeled and diced • 2 large parsnips, peeled and diced • 1.4 litre vegetable stock • Crème fraîche or natural yoghurt, parsnip crisps (see tip) and crushed coriander seeds, to garnish
TIP To make the parsnip crisps, use a potato peeler to shave long thin strips from one large peeled parsnip. Half fill a large deep frying pan with vegetable oil and heat until a cube of bread dropped in the hot oil browns in 30 seconds. Fry the strips of parsnip in the hot oil for 1-2 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain well on kitchen paper.
Heat the oil in a large deep pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and fry for 6-7 minutes until softened. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then add the diced vegetables and cover and cook gently for 5 minutes. Pour in 900ml of the chicken stock and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Cool for 10 minutes. Puree the soup in a blender or food processor (in batches if necessary) and return to the pan. Stir in another 300ml of the remaining stock and heat through gently. If you prefer a soup with a thinner consistency add the rest of the stock. Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve in warmed bowls garnished with a spoonful of crème fraîche or natural yoghurt, parsnip crisps and crushed coriander seeds.
