“The right to the city is far more than the individual liberty to access urban resources: it is a right to change ourselves by changing the city

David Harvey

5

Our ongoing work with social housing stems from a deep interest in the city as the very basis of pluralistic, modern society. As the epicenters of social life and economic opportunity, cities also present us with problems of inequality and segregation. If we believe that the health of our society can be measured by observing the health our cities, how can we, as architects, address the physical symptoms of these problems? The following ten projects offer some possible answers to this question. Naturally, we intend for these to be read as models to confront some of the pressing issues that face society today. At the same time, our work is encouraged by the belief that design is a powerful tool for the positive transformation of the world we inhabit. We firmly believe that each person deserves the right to equal participation in the public, productive, and private life of the city and that it is our responsibility as designers and citizens to work to achieve this. From our experiences researching and designing social housing, we have derived a set of basic principles to guide our work as we move forward: A reciprocal and fundamental relationship links the house to the city. If we can imagine how the house acts as the building block for the city, then the city must also respond by transforming the house. Without this dialogue, we have failed to strengthen and establish a place of value for the individual in society. People deserve that the city is these changes urban life and

the right to determine their own housing needs. We acknowledge an everchanging organism and that housing must accommodate from the very start. Mobility and growth are a natural part of ensure the continued use and vitality of the built environment.

A home must possess positive value belonging to its residents. Homeowners deserve to be invested in their residence and their property should provide financial returns over time. Additionally, individuals who are invested in their homes are also more likely to be invested in the wellbeing of their communities. And finally, we must remind ourselves of the need to design places with identity. Above all else, housing must foster a sense of community and represent the aspirations and values of its residents. This is exemplified in the vibrant range of activities and encounters that occur in well designed public spaces. Without this, the city, in its purest sense, would cease to exist.
