Dand Belles & Beaux 4-H Communications Night by Judy Wells Public speaking is an important part of the 4-H program. Dand Belles & Beaux held its Communications Night on Sunday, February 21. Senior member Teagan Nestibo was the emcee for the evening. He gave words of welcome and thanked the judges, parents and fellow 4-H’ers. He invited all to recite the 4-H Pledge. Junior Speeches: Nolan Nestibo’s speech was called “Rockin The Hills” about his skiing development

from the little hills (Pony Hill) to the gigantic ones at Whistler. He told about the jump hill where it’s awesome when you are suspended in mid-air but not so good when you land, dazed and confused. One highlight included while skiing, Nolan spotted Olympian Ashley McIver. Kenzie Wells’s speech was titled “The Holocaust”. Kenzie said she became interested in the subject after reading “Hana’s Suitcase”. Kenzie spoke about the horrors the Jewish

people suffered in the death camps, kids being ripped from their families, prisoners, gas chambers - living a nightmare. She asked, “How can this have happened? It’s something you and I will never understand.” Madison McGee’s speech was called “What is MHSRA” -(Manitoba High School Rodeo Association)? The MHSRA started in 1995. There are currently 13 rodeos per season seven in the fall and six in the spring. Madison says the closest for her is Oak Lake and the

furthest is Swan River. Her favourite event is pole ending. She uses three different horses for her events - Flip, Oscar, and Cruz. It takes a lot of practice and hard work. Madison enjoys taking part in clinics and has had a lot of fun with high school rodeo and meeting new friends. Intermediate Speeches: “Just Breathe” was Josh Combs’s speech - about running into a 6’4” 200 lb wall. Not a real wall, of course, but a big, solid hockey player. After re-

ceiving the hockey check, Josh remembers getting up, taking two strides and going back down. This happened twice before he stayed down. He felt like he couldn’t breathe, a very scary feeling. He remembers a paramedic asking boy? girl? His long, curly locks continued to confuse people. He was taken to the hospital, the diagnosis was Josh had the wind knocked out of him and he learned how important the diaphragm is to breathing. Continued on page 3

by Grant Moffatt The Southwest Cougars are back in the playoffs. Jay Webber’s first goal of the year was a big goal as it turned out to be the game winner in a 4 to 3 win over Central Plains Saturday afternoon in Portage. The Cougars earned an overtime win over Yellowhead on Wednesday night to set up a must win game over Central Plains.Tucker Scantelbury opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal at the 16 minute mark of the first period when his puck rolled in past Brady Gordon to open the scoring. The teams played scoreless hockey until Dawson Waddell tipped home a Zack Wytnick point shot with the man advantage at the 16 minute mark of the second. The third period was scoreless and overtime turned out to leave the two teams tied at one heading to a shoot out. The shoot out saw Tristen Cross undress Riley Lamb for the only goal giving the Cats the much needed win. Brady Gordon turned aside 34 saves for the win while Riley Lamb turned aside 27 Cougar shots. Saturday afternoon saw Brody Moffatt open the scoring midway through the period. Grady Hobbs evened the score with a second left in the first period, with Brian Harris and Quin Hobbs picking up the apples. Drew Anderson scored midway through the second to give the Caps the lead. Garrett Sambrook scored a power play goal 90 seconds later to even the score, from Quin Hobbs and Brian

Dand Belles & Beaux 4-H Communications Night Continued from page 1 Miranda Adams speech was entitled “My Trip to the Vet Clinic”. Miranda loves animals and especially horses but one day her horse ran into a fence and tore its flesh. She said they had to take it to the vet who said they couldn’t just stitch it up - they would have to cut the skin. Well, that was enough for Miranda, she spent the rest of time in the truck and she’s pretty certain “she’s never gonna be a vet”. Hilary Kelm delivered a humourous speech about how her brothers and dogs are alike. She has two brothers and two dogs - Jack is like one of the dogs and Hayden is like the other. Some of the similarities include: like to snuggle, bad breath, likes to sleep a lot, active, same hair colour and always looking like they need a haircut. Belle Hobbs’s speech was “It Is Not Last Year”. Last year, Belle had a bit of a giggle fest during her speech and she vowed it would not happen again. She told of ways to overcome the fear of public speaking. These included: Preparing positively, choose a topic you know well and enjoy, use humour (helps to get rid of butterflies), rehearse like a maniac, rehearse in front of a mirror, practice pausing and speaking really slowly, remember to breathe, get a good night’s sleep, focus on posture and body language, remember the audience is friendly, make eye contact and regain composure if you make a mistake. Senior Speeches: Kaitlyn Crowe’s speech was “More Than Just A Game” about hockey. She told of how hockey has developed her personality, helped to learn how to set goals and to deal with success and adversity, how to work as a member of a team. She said it’s important to practice the little things in order to get to the big picture, which applies to all areas of life. As a member of a team she has learned time management, people skills, pulling one’s own weight, how to manage situations, overcoming setbacks, learning how to take criticism (which makes you stronger). It has also taught her how to give back to her community. She concluded: “It’s not so much how your game develops, but how the game develops you as a person.” Kelly Temple speech was “Provincial Honour Choir”. She was thrilled to be a member of the Senior choir this year. Kelly explained the Provincial Honour Choir which has been in existence for 25 years, includes three choirs — Junior, Senior and Adult that it’s a weekend full of singing. The weekend concludes with concerts from all three choirs. It is very hard work but Kelly looks forward to ap-

Dand Belles & Beaux 4-H Club held their annual Communications Night on Sunday, February 21. The Dand 4-H Club: Back row (L-R): Josh Combs, Luke Weidenhamer, Kelly Temple, Katie Crowe, Jillian Crowe, Teagan Nestibo. Front row: Juliana Nestibo, Nolan Nestibo, Madison McGee, Hilary Kelm, Belle Hobbs, Miranda Adams, Kenzie Wells.

The judges (L-R): Melissa Morrison, Stacey Weidenhamer, Al Manshreck, Jeremy Wilkinson. PHOTOS/JUDY WELLS plying for the choir again next year. Teagan Nestibo’s speech was “The Zika Virus”. This virus has made the headlines in the past few months. It has actually been around since 1947 and found in monkeys. In 1954 the virus mutated and started affecting humans. In 2015 the virus was found in South America. Zika Virus symptoms include fever, pink eye, rash and joint pain. What makes the virus unique is its affect on the unborn or infants. Brazil has experienced a significant outbreak of the Zika Virus and at the same time a large number of cases of congenital microcephaly (smaller than usual head) in infants. The good news is the mosquito responsible for spreading the virus doesn’t like the cold. Jillian Crowe’s speech was entitled “Away From Home”. She spoke about the difficulty of deciding her future plans - the fear of having regrets, not knowing what she wants to do after high school, of living away from home. Jillian gave a very honest, emotional speech to which many can relate. She may not know her future education/career path, but she does know for certain she wants her family to grow up like she did. And she also knows “her life will be unique”.

Luke took part in the Sports & Fitness category of the program. He enjoyed several sports he’d never tried before, including soccer; capture the flag, mixed marital arts and dragon boating. Some other highlights

included a visit to the Canadian War Museum and the peace ceremony and the parliament buildings. Luke says EWC is an experience of a lifetime; he made a bunch of new friends and has great memories. He also realized how lucky he is to live in Canada. The judges included Melissa Morrison, Stacey Weidenhamer, Al Manshreck, and Jeremy Wilkinson. While they deliberated, a delicious lunch was served. Al Manshreck gave comments on behalf of the judges. He congratulated all the 4-H members for their participation. “Public speaking is something everyone should be awarded for. You never know where public speaking will come into use in your life. You all presented well and made it difficult for the judges.” He offered a few suggestions: • Look at people when you address them; • Hold speeches up - this allows your voice to project so much better. Manshreck noted that everyone had done this well. • Use point form - that way if you get lost, it’s easy to get back on track. All club members were called forward and the awards were presented. Junior: 1st Nolan Nestibo; 2nd Madison McGee. Intermediate: 1st Belle Hobbs; 2nd Hilary Kelm. Senior: 1st Kaitlyn Crowe; 2nd Teagan Nestibo. Not So Very Long Ago

Odds & Ends Attention hockey fans – The AAA Bantam Cougars are hosting the Pembina Valley Hawks on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Doc Bonar Arena. Head on over to the rink for some great hockey action. • • • The Deloraine Royals are in the second round of playoff action in the Tiger Hills Hockey League. They are playing Killarney in a best-of-five series. Killarney won 7-0 in the first game last weekend. Game 2 was held in Deloraine February 24 (time of writing). See next week’s issue for more. • • • Be sure to check out the article about Brodie Davis and his beekeeping venture in this week’s Border Connection. “Naples Clover Honey” products were available at last year’s Farmer’s Market. Congratulations Brodie on a successful product and venture. • • • Emily Janssens’ book launch for her novella “Coming Home” was also a big success. She hosted the book launch and signing on Thursday, February 18 at the Country Garden Inn. There was an excellent turnout. Maybe there will be a sequel? • • • A big shout out goes to the De-

loraine Novice team winning their league tournament last weekend. The final game was against Reston and although the final score was 6-2, it was really anyone’s game throughout. Great effort team! • • • And news from Arizona reached us this week. . . Bob Elliott got a Hole-in-One while golfing with Delory Nestibo. Check out the picture in this issue. Congrats Bob! • • • What’s going on with all the sickness lately? Is it the weather? Just the way things go? Whatever the reason it seems half the town is sick with either strep throat, the achybreaky flu or stomach bug. Here’s hoping these all go away quickly and everyone is on the mend. • • • And here’s some Spring Fever humour: Four high school boys afflicted with spring fever skipped morning classes. After lunch they reported to the teacher that they had a flat tire. Much to their relief she smiled and said, “Well, you missed a test today so take seats apart from one another and take out a piece of paper.” Still smiling, she waited for them to sit down. Then she said: “First Question: Which tire was flat?”

In Memoriam

WEIDENHAMER In loving memory of Bill Weidenhamer, September 11, 1948 - February 27, 2015. God saw you getting tired, When a cure was not to be. So He wrapped His arms around you, And whispered, “Come unto me.” You didn’t deserve what you went through, And so He gave you rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best. So when I saw you sleeping, So peaceful and free from pain. I could not wish you to come back, To suffer that again. ~ Lovingly remembered and sadly missed, Jan & Jeff Notices / Nominations
