GOD IS STILL ABLE by Pastor Kedrick T. Lowery It was late Saturday night and worry began to set in because my wife had not returned home. According to my calculations, she should have arrived by now. She had spent the day with her brother and his family in Greenville, NC. It was and is our ritual to stay in contact with each other even when we are away from one another. We had spoken several times earlier in the day, but things took a turn as it related to our communication. For some reason I could not reach her and continuously got her voice mail. I finally tried to chalk it up to her phone going dead or her being on multiple lines. Around two in the morning worried and stressed, after making multiple calls to her, my phone rang. Relieved, but also tad bit upset, I answered the phone to see what in the world was going on. As I greeted with a bit frustration, I realized the voice on the other end was not my wife; it was my sister-in-law explaining some of the things that had taken place. My wife was in the Emergency Room at East Carolina University Hospital and the phone could not get a good signal. Relieved that she was alive, the next statement would rock my world…”she just found out she miscarried.” It was as if I was celebrating life while mourning death in the same breath. We had recently found out that we were pregnant. We were ecstatic. We approached marriage God’s way. God blessed us to start a ministry in Durham, NC and opened the door for my wife to practice Dentistry in a new office there. He blessed us with a home and our new addition would be icing on the cake, but the voice on the other end said, “she miscarried.” I finally got an opportunity to speak to my wife. We were both in disbelief but holding on to God’s unchanging hand. I prepared to drive to Greenville. My wife, being the woman of God that she is, asked me not to worry and to go to church and preach when I got up the next morning. She believed everything would be all right; (I believe she did not want me to drive that distance late night because I like to sleep at night…even if I am driving - lol). Torn between whether to go to church and preach or go to Greenville and be with my wife I heeded her advice and went to church. I found relief in being able to serve God's people. We had an awesome service. The people were blessed, I was blessed and I believe God got glory out of the worship experience, but I left the church abruptly to get home and be with my wife. I will never forget that day. We talked, we laughed, we fought tears, but ultimately agreed God would bless us with a child and we would try again. I will never forget that day. Four miscarries later, our chances of seeing manifestation of the promise of God lessened. One day while sitting in a conference, I was challenged to sow a seed. For years I sowed seeds for members and they got cars, houses and even babies, but I had never sowed a seed for us to have a baby. This day I stepped out on faith and sowed a seed for us. When we got back to North Carolina, I could not wait to see our Doctor, because I had sown a seed. I remember the day as if it was yesterday. We were sitting in the doctor’s office and he explained we had once again miscarried. Our doctor was a Christian. We highly respected him and the advice he gave. This day with tears in his eyes, he gave us information on adoption. He had adopted a daughter from Haiti and often did missions work there. Although we were not against adoption , we felt it was God’s will that we have a baby. As tears begin to flood my wife’s eyes, I tapped her knee under the table to confidently reassure her,

“God is still able!”

P.4 DivineConnections.info Of course I questioned God. We tried to the best of our abilities to do things right. We tried to the best of our abilities to live and serve Him right. We prayed and sowed seeds for others and things came to pass. We even had nine god-children and it seemed as if I was dedicating babies every other month. To make matters worst, we sowed a seed into good ground towards the manifestation of your promise. Why did we miscarry…again? Five miscarries. It didn’t seem fair. We were upset, but we convinced each other to try again. One would think we were gluttons for punishment, but a few months later, my wife went full term and we were blessed with Layla Grayce. She was beautiful, full of life and a gift from God. We were happy. It seemed surreal. It was as if everything that happened prior to that moment vanished within seconds. We had a bundle of joy and she was well worth the wait. In my mind, let the celebration begin! As we prepared to take Layla Grayce home, things took a turn for the worst. Not for Layla Grayce, but for my wife. She went into congestive heart failure. She was suffering from shortness of breath and required a blood transfusion. They immediately transferred her to the Critical Care Unit. The baby we desired for over ten years was here and resting up stairs and my wife, the gift God gave me, was fighting for her life downstairs. This was a challenging period for me. I was full of faith and at the same token full of doubt (things looked really bad). I had faith to know that God could work things out. This was the same God who brought us through multiple miscarriages, allowed my wife to conceive, allowed her to go full-term, and gave us a healthy baby. I was full of faith. At the same token I was full of doubt. Why would God grant our desire and give us a baby girl, and then allow my wife to be at what Doctors felt could possibly be death’s door. I watched as they hooked tubes to her body. I watched as she fought for breath. I watched as they gave a blood transfusion. I watched as she held on for life.

I would run upstairs and feed, change and play with my new born girl, and then I would run back to reality and see my main girl fighting for life. Eventually we got time to ourselves to go to God in prayer. It looked dim, but God still answers prayer. After an extended time in the hospital God healed and delivered my wife. It was around this time that I would go through the first of multiple surgeries. We had a newborn baby girl, my wife was coming out of a life threatening situation and I had a surgery that would keep me out of work for and unable to preach, teach or carry a conversation for an elongated time. Those were trying times, to say the least.

But GOD!

IS YOUR MONEY SICK? Do you have trouble sleeping? Do you suffer with headaches, anxiety, depression, or chronic neck and shoulder pain? Maybe you struggle with controlling your weight. Did it ever occur to you that you could be suffering these issues because you don’t have financial peace? Have you ever had a financial wellness assessment? If not you could unknowingly be experiencing the long term effects of your money being sick.

Studies show that student loan debt has doubled in the last ten years. 68 million Americans don’t have life insurance. Credit card debt averages $15,788 per household and a third of Americans have fallen so far behind on their monthly debt payments that they are receiving aggressive collections calls regularly.

In early 2016 I sat down with a young couple that was experiencing great distress due to their finances. The wife shared with me that in the last few months she had been waking up with frequent recurring nightmares. Her nightmare was that she and her husband passed away untimely and their seven-year old son was left with little to no resources to provide for his future well-being. Her husband had in recent months changed jobs and lost his life insurance benefits.

Upon our first meeting we were able to provide them with a family life insurance plan for almost half of what they were paying with the employer plan. They had about $1500 dollars saved in a separate account. They were contributing about $100 per month to it. About ever month they dipped into this account for nonemergency spending. We moved this money to a low interest account that will make it easy to access in a true emergency but not so readily available that either of them could put their hands on it by ATM withdrawal or debit card. This was adequate for the beginning of a three month emergency fund.

P.6 DivineConnections.info With the family now protected we moved on to the next obstacle which is debt. The biggest problem that this young couple suffered from was not a lack of income. Their combined household income was $72000. The greatest barrier to progress was the absence of a written budget. Both of them were aware of the household expenses, but neither of them had taken the opportunity to look at their miscellaneous spending. The husband added that when he is traveling for work and gets hungry he eats wherever it’s convenient. The wife was much less liberal with her mealtime spending habits, but admitted to buying random nonessentials for their two children almost weekly. With a complimentary budget analysis we discovered that the two averaged approximately $475 a month in these areas of spending alone. Needless to say they were shocked. They agreed to use an envelope system to help control over spending without significantly changing their quality of living.

At their three month wellness check up the couple had held to their budgeting commitments. With their new found money strategy the couple was saving an additional $350 per month. They had used this money to contribute their emergency fund. With a pattern of saving and budgeting established. We started to aggressively address their debt elimination strategy.

In less than 30 days the family was properly protected, had a written budget plan to become debt free, and on their way to saving $500k for their retirement. They both were very appreciative of the approach and expertise that I shared with them. The wife is able to sleep easier once again because the family is protected and the husband is not anxious about his job situation because he has coverage outside of his employer that he can control. In addition, their financial future is now in position to be much brighter. Schedule your financial wellness visit today.
