DELRAY BEACH TO BEGIN BEACH RENOURISHMENT PROJECT IN FEBRUARY 2013 DELRAY BEACH, FL – The City of Delray Beach will begin a Beach Renourishment Project in February 2013 to restore erosion-damaged areas along the Municipal Beach. This project, which will encompass 1.9 miles, is expected to enhance the overall aesthetics of the beach, provide upland protection to area roads and properties and improve the recreational opportunities, environmental conditions and sustainability of Delray’s world-class beach. The City’s Beach Renourishment project is expected to begin in February 2013, and is planned to be completed in March/April 2013 or 30 to 45 days after commencement, subject to weather conditions. Construction will occur along the beach, beginning just north of Atlantic Avenue, and continuing south to Linton Blvd. During the project’s construction, approximately 1,208,000 cubic yards (923,600 cubic meters) of sand will be placed on the beach from two offshore locations. To date, the City has received reimbursement funding authorization of more than $4,022,174 from Palm Beach County and the State of Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection to complete this project. The remaining $5,188,207 will be funded by the City of Delray Beach. For more information on the Beach Renourishment Project, contact Paul Dorling, Director of Planning and Zoning, at (561) 243-7040, or E-mail pzmail@mydelraybeach.com.

A resident of Delray Beach since 1996, she is the owner and artist of Fe Fi Faux of Delray, Inc., a local company that specializes in interior and architectural art design. DELRAY GETS
ONBOARD New trolleys coming to downtown early next year By Elizabeth Burrows Delray Beach CRA The Downtown Roundabout, the city’s free shuttle service, takes residents and visitors from the Tri-Rail station on Congress Avenue to A1A. And soon, it’s getting a makeover. Four new trolley-style vehicles will soon replace the small buses that have been the hallmark of the shuttle service since it debuted in early 2007. The trolleys will be as charming as the downtown area they serve, with wooden benches, large windows, and enough space to hold around 30 people at a time. Funding for the trolleys comes largely from the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, which contributed $550,000. A grant from the Florida Department of Transportation provided another $100,000 toward the purchase, and $200,000 for operating expenses. “It’s great to give people options to travel through the downtown without using their cars,” said CRA Executive Director Diane Colonna. “We hope the new trolleys will encourage even more people to use the Downtown Roundabout.” The trolleys are expected to hit the streets in February 2013,

Consumers are advised that some credit cards are now embedded with radio frequency identification (RFID) microchips, a technical advancement that transmits a signal containing cardholder’s information. The chip provides benefits for the cardholder but also has a potential down side that may result in the illegal procurement of credit card information. RFID credit cards are standard credit cards with radio frequency microprocessor chips and can be identified by an image of radio waves and/or additional text (i.e. PayPass, Blink, etc ) on the card. The chip contains personal credit card information
that can be read by scanning, or waving, the card in front of a special reader. Known as “contactless payment,” RFID credit cards are designed to provide a faster, convenient way to make purchases and eliminates the need to hand a credit card to store clerks. Consumers should be aware that the information on the chip can also be obtained by anyone who has the same type of reader (which is available on the Internet). Electronic pickpockets are able to conceal a reader and skim credit card numbers and expiration dates from wallets and/or purses just by walking next to shoppers. They do not need to have contact with the card and shoppers are unaware that their information is being stolen. A list of precautionary steps to protect your credit card information can be found below. • Consider purchasing a credit card shield and/or special wallet to block information. • Wrap credit cards in aluminum foil. • Stack multiple credit cards together in your wallet and/or purse. • Leave RFID credit cards at home and use for online purchases only. Use cash or non-RFID credit cards when shopping outside the home. • Monitor your credit card statement regularly to ensure that transactions are valid. • Call your credit card company and have this feature disabled and/or removed from your card. For more visit www.idtheftcenter.org.

City Hosts Green Ribbon Cutting at Municipal Beach
Laura Simon of the Downtown Development Authority
The City of Delray Beach proclaimed Thursday, November 15, 2012 as “America Recycles Day” in an effort to educate and encourage all Delray Beach residents, businesses and visitors on the importance of recycling and about the 3 R’s – Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. The City hosted a green ribbon cutting ceremony that same day at the Municipal Beach (A1A and Atlantic Avenue). This new program will be the largest beach recycling program in Palm Beach County and will promote Delray Beach as a leader in public space recycling while continuing efforts to promote environmental sustainability. Delray Beach’s Public Space Recycling Program is a partnership with the American Beverage Association, the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County and Waste Management Inc. of Florida. This new program will install 46 “blue bin” recyclable containers along the Delray Beach’s worldclass Municipal Beach (at each entrance) and within public parks on Atlantic Avenue. More than 50,000 pounds (or over 24 tons) of recyclable materials is expected to be diverted from entering the landfill annually and instead will be placed into the City’s recycling stream for reuse and/or repurposing. The gelato (also winners of the best Desserts, Baked Goods, and Sweet Snacks) was one of more than 120 new products entered in the competition. There was much about the gelato that caught the attention of the judges. Although it retained the rich taste of dairy and chocolate peanut butter, it is Lactose and gluten free. The makers of the winning product, Gelatto Petrini, based in Delray Beach, note that the new product will be available to both retail and foodservice markets.
“This year’s list of new products was very impressive, posing a challenge for our panel of judges,” said Bill Springer, Group Vice President, Diversified Business Communications, and show producer for Kosherfest, the world’s largest kosher trade show, held this past month at the Meadowlands Convention Center in Secaucus, NJ. “We had entries from all over the world and fierce competition in a number of the product categories.” Winners were crowned in 16 categories plus Best in Show, and were entered by companies from Brooklyn, NY to Paris, France. Entries were judged on such criteria as uniqueness, quality, presentation, taste, pricing and salability.

SMART STRATEGIES FOR YOUR HOLIDAY FESTIVITIES
I
t’s the holidays and you want to enjoy yourself, but you’re afraid of putting on the dreaded holiday weight. Preventing holiday weight gain, and maintaining your normal healthy diet, is definitely possible with a little planning. Don’t accept the mentality that you can indulge now and start your diet and exercise regimen when New Year’s comes around. You’ll be fighting an uphill battle with even more calories to burn. Food is meant to be savored, just not in excess. Enjoy the tips below that outline how to navigate your way through the holiday season.
15 Tips to Fighting the Holiday Bulge 1. Start your day with a healthy breakfast. If you don’t, you will tend to overeat the rest of the day. Good rule to follow: eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and supper like a pauper. 2. Curb your appetite. Drink a glass of water before every meal. It will help you fill up faster and help you eat less. ESPECIALLY: First thing in the morning, before going to a party, and in between alcoholic beverages. It will keep you hydrated and keep your energy levels high. 3. Slow down. Eat slower and taste your food. It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to recognize how much is in your stomach. 4. Exercise on days you eat a holiday meal. Try to get a workout in on the days you know you will have a big holiday dinner. Your metabolism will be running higher and chances are you will choose better foods. 5. Keep a food diary. Tracking everything you put into your body will help to point out your weaknesses. You will then be able to focus on limiting your intake of certain foods and spot when you missed a meal. 6. Don’t go anywhere hungry. Try to arrive at any holiday party having already eaten something healthy. That way you won’t be
that you exercise. Mark them off with a marker to show your progress. For more information and to learn how to survive the holidays, call 561-414-4441 or visit www.CoachKadel.com Julia C. Kadel CPT, CHHC, AADP Board Certified Holistic Health Coach Nutrition Counselor – Personal Trainer – Life Coach
“HUMILITY”
by the Milagro Center Stars During this past month of November, the Milagro Center STARS explored the living value of “HUMILITY”. Here, in their own words, is what the kids said about the meaning of “HUMILITY”:
“Humility means being respectful and gentle.” - Debany, age 11 “Humility is when you have that thing in your heart - that love in your heart.” - Mildred, age 9 “Humility means listening to others. If someone says don’t throw the mulch in the pool and then they do it when the teacher turns her back, and they fib about doing it, that’s not showing humility.” - JuJu, age 6 “Humility means to be nice to each other. And be respectful.” - Nikacie, age 6 “Wow, this one’s tough.... Can I get another?” - Birma, age 11 “I guess it means to be humble and tell the truth.” - Josh, age 8 “I don’t know how to define it. Can you tell me?” - Kayla, age 10 Humility? I think it’s supposed to be tolerance, being nice to other people, not disrupting them when they are talking. - Duckie (Christopher), age 12

prone to digging into high-calorie party foods. A good pre-party snack should include a glass of water, some protein and high fiber carbs, such as an apple with peanut butter or whole grain crackers and cheese. 7. Maintain portion control. Pay attention to how much you put on your plate. Use smaller plates. Moderation is one of the most important elements in weight control – especially at holiday parties. 8. Don’t give up! Falling out of habits you are trying to accomplish for a few days, DOES NOT mean your effort is hopeless. Simply acknowledge that you ‘slipped up’ or ate poorly and get back on your plan. New day, new start. 9. Decide how many drinks you are going to have before the party. Alcoholic drinks can pack more calories than a burger and fries at McDonald’s, and drinks especially during the holidays. Eggnog, hot cocoa and cider all contain excess calories. Try to stick with your low-calorie choices such as wine, light beer or mixed drinks made with low- or no-calorie mixers. Also, try to drink a glass of water between alcoholic beverages. 10. Eat more fruits & vegetables. Choose a combination of small portion of your “treats” mixed with healthy foods, like fresh fruits or vegetables. 11. Throw the snack plate away. When at a party, if the plate is plastic, toss it. If it is a dish put it in the sink. The longer you hold on to your plate, the more you will eat. 12. Split dessert with somebody. This way you will only have half the calories. 13. Leave the kitchen. Don’t hang out by the food table at home or at parties. Too much mindless eating. 14. If eating out, put half the meal in a box before you start eating. This will help you with portion control. 15. Make a workout calendar for yourself. Commit to a certain number of days per week

Are the 12 steps the only way?
W
hen most people think of addiction and recovery, they think of the 12 steps. This is largely because since 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous has been the mainstay of addiction treatment. There have been thousands upon thousands of successes through AA and NA (Narcotics Anonymous) over the years, but the results have been mixed for certain parts of the population. There is a large contingent that has not achieved sustainable recovery through the 12 steps and the reasons for this remain largely misunderstood. When a person relapses, they are typically accused of lacking commitment, effort, and desire. This is often true, but not always. There are many motivated and hard working individuals that keep relapsing for other, more complex reasons. They may spend years, in and out of different treatment centers, with only short stretches of sobriety to show for it. Their relapses are typically involuntary, where they really did not want to use, but could not prevent it despite their best efforts. They did what they could with the tools they had, but it was not enough to contain the raw power of an addictive urge to use. This is often due to some combination of poor relapse prevention skills, untreated conditions such as depression, anxiety, trauma, or an eating disorder, poor emotional support, and excessive drug and alcohol exposure. Another common reason for this is a fundamental psychological incompatibility with the 12-steps. Not every person has the capacity to truly internalize a spirituality-based recovery system to the degree required for success. This may be due to any combination of personality traits, personal beliefs and style of thought. This is not necessarily indicative of resistance from the individual, as has often been the assumption. This also does not reflect any deficiency in morality or integrity on the part of the individual either. In forcing the 12 steps, such individuals often struggle for years
before finding recovery, if they ever even do. These same individuals can do a complete turnaround if placed in a recovery system that they are psychologically compatible with, and can fully internalize. Many individuals respond well to recovery systems that are based on modern psychological and medical principles. This is especially true in the modern era of the internet, where an ever growing percentage of the population has grown accustomed to researching topics of interest and remaining generally informed. These individuals are often used to making well-informed decisions, based on tangible evidence and information. They tend to employ advanced deductive and abstract reasoning when making the more difficult decisions in their life, which in recovery would equate to a pressured decision to not relapse. A cognitive behavioral and medical science based recovery system is compatible with this thought style and helps such individuals work with their strengths and information resources. They will often demonstrate a drastic and impactful improvement when finally engaging one of these systems, even after decades of failure in a traditional system. Chronic treatment failure in a traditional recovery system is also frequently do to problems with a co-occurring disorder such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Situations such as these are often referred to as “dual-diagnosis”, where there is both addiction and the existence of another active psychiatric disorder. The biggest challenge with these situations is that an active co-existing disorder is almost always a direct trigger for the addiction. These conditions require independent treatment if there is to be any hope of improvement. A 12-step treatment model often cannot be applied as effectively when the individual is clinically depressed, anxious, or if they are suffering from an eating disorder or trauma. Certain parts of
by Dr. Raul
Rodriguez the 12-steps, which are critical for recovery success, can actually set a person back if they have one or more of these co-morbid conditions. T h e s e conditions create a certain degree of vulnerability to emotional injury, which has often become apparent when attempting the 4th step (taking inventory). Relapse and significant emotional injury can result, especially when the individual suffers from PTSD or an eating disorder. These conditions, in particular, require highly specialized care from appropriately trained professionals. It is neither safe nor fair to subject a well-intentioned 12-step sponsor to one of these potentially dangerous situations that have no realistic opportunity for success. Interpreting the reasons for failure in recovery are equally as important as interpreting success. When motivated individuals fail, it is often because of incompatibility with the recovery system made available to them. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the 12-steps; the compatibility is just not there for everyone for any number of different reasons. Co-existing disorders require independent attention, and treatment, in order for an affected individual to have a fair chance at success in recovery. Alternative recovery systems, such as those based on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), are much more compatible with co-occurring disorders and often serve as the primary psychological treatment for depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders and PTSD. These newer systems are now widely available and can help an individual find success in even the most difficult cases. CRA GRANT HELPS “PAPA” PARRA REALIZE HIS DREAM By Paula Detwiller Special to The Pineapple When Spanish-American restaurateur Christobal Parra started having to turn away guests at his now-closed Papa’s Café, at the corner of North Congress Ave. and Lake Ida Rd. in Delray Beach, he knew he had a problem. It was a good problem, but a problem nonetheless. “We had completely outgrown our space,” explains Annie Kolensky, Parra’s daughter and operations manager of the family-run Spanish restaurant. “It was 800 square feet including the kitchen. During season, it was crazy! We were way overbooked on reservations and didn’t have enough seats to accommodate everybody.” That prompted Parra—the man affectionately known as “Papa”—to think bigger. He needed a larger restaurant space, and he wanted to expand his menu to offer more of the trendy small-plate Spanish dishes called “tapas.” He set his sights on downtown Delray Beach, where many of his loyal customers lived. The aptly named Papa’s Tapas became the first Spanish restaurant and tapas bar in the downtown area.
The plan took shape when the family found a vacant commercial bay in the Pineapple Grove Arts District. The new space, at 259 NE Second Ave., would enable Papa to double his seating capacity, but it would require both interior and exterior upgrades to accommodate operations. Walling up an unneeded roll-up garage door, in the rear, could make room for a larger freezer, and replacing the two front doors with one centrally located door would create a more efficient floor plan.
“
It’s always gratifying to help a family business” Elizabeth Burrows, CRA Marketing Manager
That’s when Kolensky approached the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) about getting a Site Development Assistance grant, which offers qualified businesses a partial reimbursement for eligible exterior improvements to commercial properties. It is one of the CRA’s many economic development incentives designed to encourage business expansion, foster job creation, and ultimately
enhance the tax base within the CRA District. Papa’s family applied for the grant with the help of CRA Marketing and Grants Manager Elizabeth Burrows. They eventually received approval of a 25% reimbursement of their eligible costs, up to $6,800. “It’s always gratifying to help a family business,” Burrows said. “We’re especially excited about helping Papa’s Tapas because they found a new home for their restaurant without having to leave Delray Beach.” “ [The CRA] made everything possible for us,” said Kolensky. “And to make our dream a reality is super exciting.” Papa’s Tapas opened in early September to rave reviews, and Papa is looking forward to introducing more diners to the tastes of his homeland, as more diners visit the restaurant. Born in Alicante, Spain, he relocated to New York City in 1969, where he worked in Spanish restaurants, before meeting his wife Susie. The couple moved to Rhode Island where they raised six children, many of whom are now working at Papa’s Tapas. The menu offers a variety of traditional Spanish dishes, but tapas (Spanish for “little portions”) take center stage. They are available
as appetizers throughout the dinner hour, and from 9 to 11 p.m., the restaurant rolls out an expanded tapas selection, including empanadas, rosemary garlic wings, sautéed shrimp, and papas aioli (garlic potato salad). “You’ll be able to order 15 or 20 different ones,” said Kolensky. For the restaurant’s grand opening in the fall, Papa is planning to serve a huge seafood paella, along with Kolensky’s homemade sangria—a favorite at the old Papa’s Café. “We are excited to open,” said Papa. “With the reputation we have now, we’re going to have big, big success.”

Bond Street Salon Inspires True Diversity By Jamie Salen The Pineapple Staff Writer
“
Its not how much we give, but how much love we put into it.” -- Mother Teresa
When you pass by the award winning Bond Street Salon on NE 2nd Ave., just off Atlantic Ave, the last thing you expect to see inside the upscale, sleek interior is parents lined up with their young children awaiting their turn for a free haircut. But on Saturday afternoons from 2pm to 5 pm, that is exactly what you will find. There is a catch though… four glass boxes, each labeled with the name of a different charity organization, takes the place of a cash register on the modern industrial countertop of the front desk, and every parent is encouraged to leave a donation for one, or more, of the four charity programs supported by the salon. This is just one of the many creative
and innovative charity initiatives spearheaded by Bond Street owner Lauren Donald and master barber Ian Caven. The vintage 70’s inspired salon opened its doors in 2005 and quickly gained a reputation as an elite environment for talented hair artisans to provide superior standards in hair care for all types of hair. Unlike other salons located east of Swinton Ave., within the downtown district, the concept behind Bond Street is to provide a multi-cultural, multiethnic, multi-generational and multi-gender atmosphere for Delray Beach. “There is such loveliness in diversity and our real goal is to unite all races and economic classes through the enhancement of natural beauty,” says Donald. “The salon industry can seem segregated, and with Bond Street our vision was always to change that,” she adds.
“
What could be more perfect than a Bond theme for the Bond Street Salon” - Lauren Donald
Beyond the wonderful message Bond Street’s concept of diversity brings to the Delray Beach community, the salon is also actively engaged in offering their venue and services to benefit those in need. Master barber at Bond Street and jack-of-all-trades (also a famed local musician), Ian Caven, founded Inspired Charities, a not-for-profit foundation that provides wigs, hats and other head covering to children undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer and other blood-related illnesses at Miami Children’s Hospital. “We do this wonderful work out of Bond Street Salon. The children who are able, come to us here and we do the fitting and processing for their custom hair piece in a partition area,” explains Caven. “There is a specific method to fitting children who have lost their hair due to disease. The scalp is very sensitive and the process can often be an emotional experience,” he adds. Bond Street is also transformed into a charity fundraising event space whenever possible. On November 20th, Bond Street hosted an event to raise money for a summer camp program run by Diveheart, a non-profit dedicated to helping special needs children and adults, as well as military veterans, through scuba diving and water therapy. “Divehearts is such a wonderful and creative charity. There are so many disabled or injured people who benefit tremendously from weightlessness and that is just one benefit out of so many

with this program,” explains Caven. On February 22nd the salon will host a Charity Casino Event to raise money for their charity endeavors. The Bond Street Salon team will convert their urban oasis into a scene out of a James Bond movie. “What could be more perfect than a Bond theme for the Bond Street Salon,” teases Donald. The skilled artisans from Bond Street will also participate in this year’s Haircutathon, set for March at the Miami Children’s Hospital. “It’s something we do every year,” says Caven. “My experience at Bond Street left me bursting with pride for Delray Beach. Our town has such an amazing group up business owners and employees and I have no doubt that as I continue to search the corners of our city, I will continue to find altruism and generosity wherever I look.”

DID YOU EVER WONDER ?
By Harvey Brown Special to The Pineapple
Question: Is it OK to let other people drive my car? Answer: In a word, no; but let me expand upon that. While we all would like to be helpful and generous to family, and friends, by allowing them to occasionally use our cars, the fact of the matter is the law may not reward our generosity. If you cause an accident with your vehicle, you understand that if someone is injured, that you will likely be sued for causing their injury. Conversely, if someone hits you and hurts you in an automobile accident, you would very

DELRAY MEDICAL CENTER UNVEILS NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART CARDIAC LAB DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow. com) – Delray Medical Center announced the opening of a new state-of-the-art Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab. The 1,000-squarefoot facility features multiple lighting levels, a mapping system upgrade, and an 80-inch monitor for better viewing. A cardiac electrophysiology lab is used to treat a wide range of arrhythmia disorders, including atrial fibrillation, a leading cause of stroke. These catheter-based procedures can treat rhythm disorders without the need for surgery, which may reduce recovery time and complications. Specifically, Delray Medical Center has acquired the Allura Xper FD10 X-ray system from Philips for its cardiac electrophysiology lab. This fully digital system enables physicians to capture and view detailed images of a patient’s coronary structure, thereby facilitating faster and more accurate diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease, while providing minimal radiation exposure to their patients. In addition, Delray Medical Center will be the only Electrophysiology Lab in Palm Beach County that will have the DoseAware system. This system gives real-time feedback of X-ray doses, so doctors and staff minimize the exposure of radiation. The system also enables a physician to have better patient access during an exam due to the system’s compact design. The “Bodyguard” system maneuvers quickly around the patient for optimal visualization, but will never collide with the patient or staff. Another added benefit is the digital Philips Flat Detector. This special screen helps to provide outstanding image quality, with less distortion than older imaging technologies. The Flat Detector helps to enhance diagnostic confidence and promotes better visualization during interventional procedures. “Both our patients and clinicians can benefit from the speed and outstanding image accuracy of this new X-ray system,” explained Chief Executive Officer Mark Bryan. “It will allow our physicians to complete a variety of diagnostic and interventional procedures safer and faster, and that means the patient is off the table and on their way to recovery and discharge much sooner.” REALTIME MARKETING GROUP DEVELOPS WEBSITE AND SOCIAL PRESENCE FOR FESTIVAL MANAGEMENT GROUP DELRAY BEACH, FL – RealTime Marketing Group announced the expansion of their partnership with Festival Management Group (FMG) of Delray Beach. When you allow a friend or family member to drive your car, you put yourself at great financial risk, since responsibility of ownership of your vehicle follows YOU. You as the owner of the car, and your friend as the driver, could each possibly be sued separately. Some of my clients have said they feel pressure to loan their vehicle to a family member or friend, and it is difficult for them to say no. At times I have told my clients to have the friend or family member who wishes to borrow their car, to call me and I have explained to them why their request is not reasonable. You’ve worked too hard accumulating assets to put them at such unnecessary risk. If you don’t yet have any savings or financial assets,

GUEST COMMENTARY: Atlantic Crossing Update By Jim Smith, SAFE Chairman Special to The Pineapple At the November 13th Delray Beach City Commission Meeting more than 350 Delray Beach residents overflowed the Commission Chambers. An hour before the meeting was scheduled to start, television cameras and reporters were set up outside City Hall, as residents congregated in a protest rally against the proposed density of Atlantic Crossing (formerly Atlantic Plaza II). The meeting was delayed as the Mayor and the City Manager, called in the police to assist in crowd control. Since the Chamber Room could accommodate only half of the crowd, the Mayor directed the overflow to Conference Room A or the lobby as both were equipped with giant monitors and sound. The Mayor and police did a terrific job of calming the audience and maintaining order throughout a rather raucous meeting. The audience, for the most part, was composed of those who opposed the proposed conditional use request to increase the residential density of the project. Even though there were many people who wished to make comments to the Commissioners, the Mayor said he would allow each person a full three minutes, but warned that it would be a very long night – which it was. The Commissioners listened, and listened, and listened more. As each Commissioner discussed the proposal, it became clear that there would be no vote “for” or “against” that night. Instead the Commission voted 5-0 to give direction to the redeveloper to revise the plan. The primary direction given by the Commissioners was for the redevelopers to go back to the drawing board and return with a plan that reduced the number of dwelling units. The Commissioners also suggested that there should be fewer 1-bedroom apartments, more condos, lease restrictions that would prevent transients, etc. The meeting to reconsider will be during the regular City Commission Meeting of December 4th.
SAFE was pleased that the redeveloper, at SAFE’s urging, attached the following conditions to their conditional use request: 1. The applicant will work with the city of Delray Beach and TDM experts to include features in the project that will minimize the traffic load on Atlantic Avenue, particularly as it may impact the traffic at the Atlantic Avenue Bridge, and north of NE 1st Street on 7th Avenue. 2. The applicant will encourage the city to utilize the previously agreed to $150,000 shuttle funding to improve service, reduce wait time, and expand service beyond what exists today. 3. The applicant will consult with a TDM expert on initiatives which could be implemented by Atlantic Crossing; and, host a meeting with these experts and other interested parties 4. The applicant will implement an employee transportation program that offers financial incentives for employees to use alternative means of transportation 5. The applicant will support traffic improvements at NE 1st Street and 6th Avenue, and NE 1st Street and 7th Avenue, that are designed and endorsed by the adjacent community and the city of Delray Beach to mitigate any increased traffic in this area associated with the project re-development. In the event it is determined by those parties that a new traffic signal and right turn lane at NE 1st Street and 6th Avenue, is appropriate, and desired, and assuming sufficient right of way exists to accommodate such right turn lane, the developer agrees to pay for such improvements. Similarly, if such a determination is made to close 7th Avenue north of 1st Street, the developer agrees to pay for such closure, not to exceed $20,000. 6. The applicant will work with SAFE, Delray Beach and FDOT to maximize pedestrian safe crossing of Atlantic Avenue between 6th Avenue and Veteran’s Park. 7. The applicant will, in addition to public bike racks placed throughout the project site,
provide both tenant and employee inside bicycle storage facilities. Employee facilities will also include lockers and showers. At SAFE’s request, the redeveloper arranged a Transportation Demand Management Summit Meeting that was held the day after the Commission Meeting to discuss programs that the redeveloper could take to reduce the number of traffic trips during peak hours and to mitigate the total number of daily traffic trips. SAFE arranged for several experts to offer their suggestions. Those included Phil Winters, the # 1 TDM guru in Florida from the University of South Florida; South Florida Commuter Service (SFCS) Deputy Director Sabrina Glenn; City of Boca Raton Transportation Demand Initiative Administrator Luisa Forney; and, FDOT4 Mobility Coordinator Larry Hymowitz. The redeveloper also invited Chamber of Commerce, City, CRA, and DDVA officials to attend. As a result of the meeting, SFCS volunteered to assist the redeveloper in designing TDM initiatives for Atlantic Crossing and, if called upon, to assist the Chamber of Commerce, the City, the CRA, and the DDVA as well. On November 15th, SAFE learned that the redeveloper is considering a further outreach effort by holding focus group meetings of the various stakeholders. SAFE believes that as a result of City Commission action and the applicants’ willingness to compromise, Atlantic Crossings will be built and that it will be a “win/win/win” for all. And, with more people living downtown, Pineapple Grove’s fitness centers, spas, hair salons, restaurants, and shops will prosper, too. The quality of life we all enjoy will not be diminished by Atlantic Crossing if the necessary steps to mitigate traffic to an acceptable level are taken. Delray Beach will just be more vibrant, more fun, and remain the Village by the Sea that we all treasure!

Cool Fashion Tips For December By Rigel Herman
The Pineapple erhaps it’s because I’m from Chicago, but I absolutely love fall Contributing Writer and winter fashions. And even though we’re in Florida, the weather is changing a little bit. I’m personally going to embrace the slight temperature change with tweaks to my wardrobe. There’s something about layers, scarves and boots that I adore. I think it’s more of a challenge to style outfits when it’s chilly; you want to look chic while staying warm. Plus the designers have a more difficult task in the colder months. To create looks that are functional and spectacular is easy when it’s hot outside, but is much harder when it’s freezing. They’re creativity never ceases to amaze me, and inspires me to get clever with my interpretation of Winter Dressing in Florida.
P
“This is my first winter living in Florida. Do people wear boots and sweaters?” ” - Janet, Delray Beach Yes! Nothing says “Weekend Tourist from Wisconsin” like a sundress and flip-flops in December in Delray. Most people that live here year round or just for the Season, begin to transition their wardrobes in November. Obviously you don’t want to be sweating through your cashmere. Fortunately, though, you can get the cozy look without overheating by buying light weight cardigans and layering them over tank tops. While heavy, cable-knit sweaters are pretty much out, there are so many options in knit-wear now that are much cooler. Look for cotton sweaters instead of wool, or blends like cotton and acrylic. And as for boots, Yes! I can’t imagine not wearing them when they’re all I see in the stores and online. Pick a sleek riding boot, pair it with leggings, a tank and a cardigan and you’re all set!
“I’ve seen a lot of bright colors in the stores, but this time of year, I tend to stick to black. Can I wear color in the winter?” ” - Sarah, Delray Beach When I first moved to Florida, I went color crazy! I was buying hues I didn’t even know existed in Chicago and in prints, (think Miami Vice meets vintage Lily Pulitzer). It wasn’t good, but I couldn’t help myself. The point is, when the sun is shining, most of us are relatively happy and happy dressing usually results in colorful clothing. However, even though it’s nice and bright outside, the color palette should be a bit different this time of year. Instead of brilliant brights, try mustard or cobalt. The color of the season, according to the runways, is definitely merlot so shades of burgundy are super on trend. Of course, emerald green is always rich looking and metallics add a lot of pizzazz when paired with basic black or grey.
“What is a peplum? I keep hearing about them, but I have no idea what it is or how to wear one?” - Claire, Boca Raton Peplum comes from the Greek word Peplos, which, way back in the day, was a women’s garment similar to a tunic. Basically it’s an overskirt that is usually attached to a blouse, jacket or dress. Anyway, peplums are here to stay, at least for another season or so. The best thing about peplum tops is that they are amazingly flattering. They hide the sins on your mid-section and can be either very sophisticated or irresistibly cute. Obviously the big designers are using them to death, and as a result, there are tons of affordable ones out there. Structured peplum tops look elegant with sleek trousers or a pencil skirt. More casual, looser fitting peplums are great with distressed denim or even shorts for a playful, trendy look. My advice, don’t spend a fortune; they won’t be in favor forever. But for now, scoop one up that’s reasonably priced and feel feminine and flirty, as they make any body look curvy.

We’re Moving to Nassau . . . No, Not the Bahamas! To wrap up my unplanned series reviewing the five Historical Districts of Delray Beach, which are featured in the Local Register of Historical Places, we finally get to go beachside. The Nassau Park District runs elegantly perpendicular to our beautiful beach here in Delray. Starting at Venetian, and ending at A1A, the Nassau District is one of our easier to find historical areas, simply due to it being named Nassau Street. Approximately four blocks South of Atlantic resides the memories of the 1930’s resort lifestyle here in Delray Beach.
Platted in 1935, this area is home to just 17 classic Cape Cod Colonial Revival style cottages, all with their own distinct feel and elegance. Clapboard siding, multi-paned windows, and clearly defined entrance ways, will have you intrigued before you even park your car. Although modest in size (most of the cottages are between 1400 - 1600 sq/ft) the attention to detail is stunning. The quality of the buildings is no surprise considering the first home in the area was designed by Sam
TIS THE
SEASON By Ed Maass The Pineapple Staff Writer While most, if not all of us, are somewhere between beginning our holiday shopping, or finishing the last few items, this time of year we begin thinking of the wishes, wants and needs of the upcoming year. I recently conducted my very own unscientific survey and nearly everyone I spoke with has one (or a combination of) the following three goals for the New Year: lose weight, quit smoking, save more money. While I can’t help with the first two, I might be able to offer some insight into the third. Let’s face it, wouldn’t we all like to know that the choices we make with our money are smart and that we are right more often than wrong. It all begins by getting your financial house in order. I use the term financial house because like a house, which has many rooms and hallways, so does your financial well-being. Your financial well-being may include; debt reduction, paying for college, buying a house, or vacation home, retirement investing, having a new baby, getting married, getting divorced and, of course, saving more. If you want to increase the likelihood of achieving your financial goals for 2013 and beyond, please read on. First, you must set your sights on a clear and specific target and focus on the bull’s eye. If you don’t have something to aim for, then you certainly have little to no chance of hitting it. Whatever you seek to achieve, you must first identify the end result that you desire (the destination or target). Its one thing to say, “I would like to achieve this or that,” but quite another to actually do so. Throughout the years I have found
Ogren, Sr., who designed many of Delray’s most memorable structures, including Delray Beach High School. Interesting trivia is that the street was originally named Jo-Jo Street. but renamed to Nassau by the developer R.C. McNeil, in 1935. It wasn’t until 1988 that the City of Delray Beach bestowed the Nassau District with its Historical Designation. Intrigued? Sound like somewhere you would like to live? Well for now you may have to settle for renting, as currently none of the homes in this area are for sale, according to the South Florida MLS. The most recent sale was a twobedroom, two-bath cottage built in 1964. This home sold in April for just under $500,000, placing it’s sale price at well over $400 per square foot. The highest sale in the last ten years was for $755,000 back in May of 2007. It was a completely redone home, built in 1937, with just over 1600 square feet under air. Feel like renting a beachside oasis? The rents in this area will run from $2000 a month for an unfurnished annual lease, up to $5000 for a seasonal furnished unit, that is, if you can find availability - looks like this year they are all leased up. Next time you want to walk off an incredible Sunday morning brunch from Caffe Luna Rosa, I suggest taking a stroll just a few short blocks south to get a close up view of history.
that most people have good intentions and desires, but unfortunately do not take the necessary actions to secure the end result. Long ago I discovered that there are two key components towards achieving goals, whether financial/investment, business or personal. To begin, you must set a realistic goal. If you set the bar too high it may lead to disappointment, and, more often than not, failure. The second is to write down the goal, starting with the end result, and then work backwards on that which is required in order to achieve it. Remember “If you don’t know where you are going…any road will take you there.” If saving more money is the goal, you need to determine: How much more? In what period of time? How will you do it? Will it be through increased income, investment returns, spending reductions or some combination thereof? You might also want to begin the New Year by paying yourself first. Yes you read that right, Pay Yourself First. Set up a systematic (automatic) savings/investment plan and faithfully deposit into your account each and every month, just like you would pay your electric bill, car payment, rent or mortgage. While many of you reading this will certainly have the best intention of putting your financial house in order, the vast majority will not. It’s just easier to put off doing it until a later time, which in turn, means it doesn’t get done at all. “Big goals can create a fear of failure…. Lack of goals guarantee’s it” HAVE A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON AND A PROSPEROUS GOAL PLANNING NEW YEAR! “. . . Then Jack Happened”
Question: My girlfriend and I just started living together. We usually take turns making meals for each other and there used to be dispute about who would clean up. As a solution to this, we decided to both clean up, and the person who didn’t prepare dinner, would make dessert. The problem is that we can’t always agree on what kind of sweets we are in the mood for, and we seem to have very different tastes. She just wants to eat cake and ice cream and all I like is pie. I really wanted to propose to her in the next couple of months. Do you think this relationship is doomed? Donnie Drungus Answer: Hello Donnie, thank you for writing in, but I’m afraid I cannot predict whether or not your potential nuptials will be everlasting. Love is an indomitable force—you might find yourself staring into her cake-loving eyes every magical gift from God day, your well of love growing with the knowledge that not only did you find a lover, but also a partner and best friend that you can share your deepest emotions, secrets, hopes, dreams and follies, and she’ll look at you, touch your face and kiss your lips softly, while the baby monitor silently coos, and you know that between now and when you leave this earth you’ll understand what unconditional is because that is how you feel about her too, and you’ll close your eyes knowing that no dream could possibly match the glorious feeling of waking up next to her everyday. Or you could pace the kitchen, deep into the night, rubbing your cracked, dishpan hands, trapped by that red-velvet harpy and her screaming brood, contemplating if the local advice columnist would mind riding shotgun out to the Everglades to help hide the body. Love is just unpredictable and maddening and wonderful. However, you do raise some interesting dilemmas that deserve examination. The two of you made a smart decision to resolve the ‘who cooks’ and ‘who cleans’ issue. That required compromise and sacrifice. The problems in most relationships are seemingly healthily resolved through compromise and sacrifice. The breaking point of said relationship is when the sacrifice required by the parties to resolve the problem becomes more meaningful than the relationship itself. Obviously you loved her enough to clean the dishes and cook, and that was a willing and well-made sacrifice because you became stronger as a couple for the compromise, giving some to get even more. But now you have to figure how much do you really hate cake and, equally, how much do you really love pie? If you hate cake more than you love her, you got troubles, and if you love pie more than you love her, you also got troubles. It’s up to you to determine whether you got troubles, or not and, if so, whether you, or her, are willing to make the personal sacrifice necessary to reach resolution. One last note, if you find yourself with headaches in the pre-marital, hot ‘n sweaty, hubba-hubba phase of a relationship about trivialities such as dishes and desserts, it might serve you well to reassess what is going on with your relationship. If she refuses to share a nice piece of key-lime with you, is this really the person you want to share a permanent summertime, rocking-chair porch with? Please share questions and comments at Andthenjackhappened@gmail.com, you have a substantially incredible chance to have your question published.
Thelma and Louise meets the Coen Brothers in this southern fried fingerlickin’ new comedy! A contemporary Southern “revenge comedy” that disarms stereotypes of domestic abuse with wild humor, Bear is part “I Love Lucy,” part Jacobean tragedy, and part feminist power ballad. Set in the North Georgia Mountains, the ever-sweet Nan finally flips the story on her abusive husband, Kyle, taking back her life. With the help of her colorful friends, her idolization of Jimmy Carter, and one violent Shakespearean stage direction, this play ain’t over till the bears are in pursuit. “Bear is RAW and HILARIOUS”– American Theatre Magazine Lou Tyrrell, Artistic Director of Theatre at Arts Garage, is delighted to announce that the 2012-2013 season’s first production is the masterful revenge comedy,Exit Pursued by a Bear, written by Lauren Gunderson. The play has been lauded nation-wide for its brilliant marriage of fun and drama. However, the marriage depicted by the lead characters in the play is anything but brilliant! Nan Carter is caught in the proverbial bear trap. Fed up with her abusive husband, Kyle, she collaborates with her friends to feed him to the bears in the woods outside the house! While that biting scenario may sound extreme, the planned plot takes us on a journey of wit, insight, and just plain laughout-loud developments. “This play epitomizes how humor allows us to look at challenging subjects and then initiate a dialog,” says Tyrrell. “Spousal abuse and bullying are very serious topics, but the insightful way Gunderson blends wisecracks and wisdom is really remarkable. I think our audience will be thoroughly entertained…it’s serious fun” Tyrrell believes that while the show is filled with laughter, it allows the audience to address difficult topics in a new light. “As a main stage work for an adult

audience, this play is unique and compelling. But, I also selected this piece for our STAGE IT! education-outreach program, which brings students from area schools to Arts Garage for matinee performances,” explained Tyrrell. “This program is an incredible opportunity for these students to not only experience live theater, but to immerse themselves in an issue that is vital for all of us to understand. Students will attend workshops where they will learn to craft their own monologues, using the play as inspiration. From hundreds of student monologues, we will then create a student production,Sticks & Stones, that will be performed at Arts Garage in early 2013.” Exit Pursued by a Bear is an extraordinary new work,” continues Tyrrell. “It makes us laugh it stimulates our intellect, and illuminates an important issue. We are very excited about this production!”

THE DELRAY BEACH PLAYHOUSE PRESENTS THE SOUND OF MUSIC
DELRAY BEACH, FL – As a special holiday presentation for the entire family, The Delray Beach Playhouse is presenting Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, one of the most popular and inspiring musicals of all time. The Show begins November 30 and runs through December 16, 2012. A smash hit on Broadway, The Sound of Music went on to become the most successful motion picture of its time, a favorite with music lovers of all ages. music Andrew Foreman
Unassuming, the 5’9” young boy walks into the coffee shop, guitar strapped to his back, and looks for a seat. Several musicians and would be musicians line this coffee shop on any given day. But while most of them will practice their favorite pop song or work on writing the next indie hit, the 17-yr-old Andrew Forman sips his ice coffee and scours his iPod for his favorite Robert Glasper album. Robert Glasper is a jazz pianist and his jazz albums are heavily influenced by hip hop and R&B. This is the kind of music Andrew listens to and its the kind of music he has set out to master.
I
n some ways his story is typical. Andrew Forman’s father played guitar and would constantly be playing, and listening, to all types of music, from ‘Yes’ to Miles Davis. When he first heard his Cantor play the guitar in a Hebrew school he realized he wanted to play. “I asked her who taught her because I wanted to play like her. Her teacher was my first teacher. A classical guitar teacher, so old, that she was probably Moses’ first teacher as well,” says Andrew. His course was set, and Andrew did what most young guitarists do. He started playing rock. By middle school Andrew was practicing all the time. He says of those years, “I would plan to meet my friends at the movies on a Friday or Saturday night, and I would forget and lose track of time. I was learning new music and new ways to play old music, and sometimes practicing for hours at a time without even taking a break. Around eighth grade things began to move forward quickly and I started needing to find new types of music to play. By high school I was pretty much only playing jazz.”
Without even hearing him play you can tell that jazz is his music of choice. He wears classic Raybans and dresses like a kid out of the midcentury (you know, with clothes that fit.) He understands how to wear a suit and is polite and kind to everyone he meets. “When I started really getting into jazz, I got into more than just the music,” he continues. “I got into the style of the music and the style of the people who played it. It influenced my entire sense of what it means to be cool, and what it means to be a musician.” His accolades speak for themselves. Andrew has been selected to play in honor bands at the district and state level each year of his high school career and holds every musical scholastic honor that a student can hold. On top of that he has performed with the Grammy Band, the Young Arts Jazz Program, played in New York at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Young Jazz leaders jazz band, the Berklee School of Music’s Terri Lynn Carrington ensemble, and most recently, at Juliard’s summer jazz program. With stellar grades, and loads of community service hours, under his belt Andrew has his pick of Colleges. At the ripe old age of 17, Andrew, along with his custom made, one of a kind Gibson ES-165, has begun his musical conquest. He has already performed professionally with Olivia de la Garza, Drew Tucker, and Brad Keller. You might find him performing at Hyatt Place in Delray Beach along with another young rising jazz star, vocalist Zoë Fromer, or maybe with his quartet, at Brule Bistro, 75 Main, or backing up some of the best jazz players in the world in Ft Lauderdale, Miami, and beyond. When I ask him what his music plans are for the long term, he says what I expect him to say. “I want to play my guitar and travel around the world doing it.” Sometimes, when you hear those words from young musicians, they sound like ‘pie in the sky’ dreams, but with Andrew and his talent, it sounds like a legitimate business plan!

JORDANZIMMERMAN
Street artist transforms South Florida in an unlikely way By Ellen Thistle The Pineapple Contributing Writer
The second you see 20-year-old Jordan Zimmerman, you know he’s a badass: covered in tattoos, gauges in his earlobes, shaggy hair that goes in different directions. He smokes cigarettes with abandon. He drops the f-bomb when talking with strangers. He apologizes for nothing. He doesn’t go to school. He quit his job. Most days you can find him outside, holding a can of spray paint, producing images of disturbing owls or bulbous eyeballs. You’ve probably seen his work. He draws on the walls of bathroom stalls, paints faces on the sides of abandoned buildings, scribbles quirky phrases on postal envelopes or discarded doors— anything he can get his hands on. He makes stickers and applies them in public places with industrial-strength glue. His artwork stretches from Jupiter to Miami, peppered down Clematis St. and Las Olas Blvd., tucked into back alleys and applied on the sidewalk or the back of street signs. He’s not out to make a name for himself, or a statement about society. He’s just always had the compulsion to draw. Sometimes, it happens to be on walls. “It’s better than a blank wall,” he conjectures, “or some advertising bull.” But we’re not talking about the sloppy graffiti you see from the highway. The word “vandalism” is insulting here. This is art. These images, crafted quickly and with discretion, depict a playful, surreal reality that holds the power to transcend. That’s not to say that everyone appreciates Jordan’s form of expression. He’s been caught in the act more times than he can remember.
He’s been to jail, paid the fines, the whole nine yards. These days, he tries to stay out of trouble. When caught in the act, “I run,” he laughs. When not engaged in embellishing public property, this spray paint virtuoso lends his talent to canvas, boards, or panels. He is one of the lucky ones—people want to buy his art. “Things have actually been going well lately,” he admits. “I’ve gotten a lot of commissioned pieces; I’ve gotten invited to a lot of shows. I have a few bands who want me to do their cover art.” Jordan doesn’t paint for the money. He despises gentrification, resents strip malls, and harbors disdain for South Florida’s “vapid culture.” But Jordan is part of a movement that is bigger than he is. Unsanctioned art is cropping up in public places worldwide. Names like Banksy and Shepard Fairey have crept into the collective consciousness and moved street art to the forefront of the ever-burgeoning art world. These artists have transformed what can be done with a can of spray paint on a
clean wall. Considered a crime by some, artists are using this medium to convey messages of activism, politics, and social examination. Jordan doesn’t claim to be doing any of that, although much of his art has a message. Odd quips are often scribbled across his paintings— phrases that charge people to challenge their beliefs, reexamine their actions, abandon their comforts. And it is the unconventional placement of these pieces that makes it so commanding. It is precisely because they aren’t tucked away in museums, batted among critics, that these works of art hold value. Because, if nothing else, Jordan is transforming mundane realities. With a few swift motions of a permanent marker or a can of spray paint, he makes you look twice at the stalls of seedy public restrooms, or the walls at the back of the building where you take your smoke break, or the stop sign at the end of your street. So keep your eyes open. The inspiration of Jordan Zimmerman crops up in unusual places, and it might just change your day.

THE’BOMB Thelma and Louise meets the Coen Brothers in this southern fried fingerlickin’ new comedy! With the help of her colorful friends, her idolization of Jimmy Carter, and one violent Shakespearean stage direction, this play ain’t over til the bears are in pursuit.

The club also features a 4,200-square-foot fitness center, pool, fitness director and personal trainers. In addition, The Seagate Country Club offers both casual and fine-dining options, indoors and outdoors, including a fine-dining restaurant available for dinner, along with the casual 19th Hole restaurant and bar. All dining operations are led by Executive Chef Adam Gottlieb and feature fresh American cuisine fashioned from local and coastal ingredients. With Balinese-inspired décor and banqueting, The Seagate Country Club is also a popular venue for meetings, social gatherings and weddings and can accommodate up to 300 seated guests. The Hamlet Country Club opened in 1973 and was one of the first private clubs in the state of Florida. With the renowned architectural course design led by Joe Lee, along with regular black-tie events, the club drew a membership of high profile names
from the world of sports, such as former member and board member Jack Nicklaus; retired baseball legends’ Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford; and Hall of Fame pro golfers Beth Daniels, Sandy Lyle, Jane Blalock and Hollis Stacey. In 2007, The Hamlet underwent a $10 million renovation; the club was refurbished with fine woods, bamboo and silk, along with re-contoured golf course fairways and new Har-Tru tennis courts. “We are thrilled to introduce the newest Seagate property to our esteemed members and hotel guests,” says George Valente, General Manager of the Seagate Country Club. “Our goal is to cultivate the finest resort experience, while sustaining the intimacy of a boutique property, for both members and hotel guests alike.” The Seagate Hotel & Spa will provide guests with complimentary, luxury roundtrip transportation to the Seagate Country Club, which is only 3.1 miles away. The purchase of the Seagate Country Club is just the latest new attraction for guests of the Seagate Hotel & Spa. The hotel recently introduced a 2,500-gallon shark tank as the hotel’s fifth aquarium, as well as Executive Chef Adam Gottlieb’s new menu at the Atlantic Grille, featuring local produce and seafood such as Pan-Fried Scallops and Local Roasted Snapper. Village Stroll The Colony Hotel & Cabana Club Weekend getaways to Delray Beach Marriott
Florida Charm: The 1926 Colony Hotel & Cabana Club calls to mind the romantic Flagler era of Florida Mediterranean architecture: three bright yellow stories topped by twin domed towers that echo the color of the historic building’s striped awnings. The Colony Porch Bar and retail store fronts are located on Atlantic Avenue. The guestroom windows are sheltered from the Florida sun by colorful yellow-and-red awnings. Tall palms, exotic orchids and brightly cushioned original wicker furniture all add to the Florida charm throughout. Five blocks from the ocean and the historic Arts & Cultural Center on the vibrant main street amid sidewalk cafes, fine shops and art galleries, the landmark hotel is an architectural model for current development and a historic landmark. Hotel guests can enjoy The Colony Cabana Club, a private beach club located two miles from the hotel, where seagrapes, coconut palms and native flora sway in the breezes of the Atlantic. The Club offers 250 feet of private beach with complimentary umbrellas, cabanas and chaises right on the beach. This is uniquely authentic Florida charm and hospitality with a casual atmosphere. History: Martin Luther Hampton, an associate of Addison Mizner, designed and built The Colony Hotel in 1926. The interior of the romantic hotel includes the 1926 staff operated elevator and the original telephone switchboard. The lobby has the complete set of more than 50 pieces of Fixx Reed wicker furniture and is lit by the six original wood skylights. The lobby terrazzo floors, the red oak in the music and dining rooms and the Cuban 1926 tile floor on the porch are still intact. Last year, the Colony Hotel & Cabana Club restored and reinstalled the carved fireplace mantle as the centerpiece of the hotel lobby. The mantle had been stored in the attic of the sister Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport, Maine for more than 50 years. It again is united with the original black wrought iron lobby chandeliers which were restored in the lobby ten years ago after they had been stored in the Kennebunkport attic. Today the Colony is one of the most important historic landmarks in Delray Beach. The Mediterranean Revival architecture is a model in the Delray Beach Downtown Master Plan for new development. Its location on Atlantic Avenue in the heart of Delray Beach has allowed The Colony to witness the evolution of this Village by the Sea from its humble beginnings to its present day resort status and two-time All American City. 525 East Atlantic Avenue • Delray Beach • www.thecolonyhotel.com/florida
