Delray Beach Public Library’s Centennial Celebration will celebrate the milestone with the community that funds this unique structure with a combination of public and private support with a three-day long birthday party, April 11 through April 13. The celebration begins with what organizers are calling the social event of the season, a “Centennial Birthday Bash” event at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, where the entire Delray Beach Public Library will be transformed into a “100-Year Walk Down Memory Lane.” The birthday bash will have entertainers dressed in costumes, period characters, music, and lots of food and drink, event organizers said. Cost is $100 per-person in honor of the 100-years and it promises to be the event of the season.

Question Six (6) on the voting ballot for the 2013 Delray Beach Municipal Elections addressed a 2012 proposal by the City of Boca Raton to purchase the City of Delray Beach. The proposal was approved by a majority of 89%, meaning Boca Raton will submit its official acquisition documents to Delray Beach for final review Tuesday, April 30, 2013. On May 1, 2013, Delray Beach will officially be named North Boca Raton, Florida.

The Centennial year has been an opportunity to commemorate this wonderful milestone in our community.” Kimberley Trombly-Burmeister

Library Board Member and Beach resident Nancy Dockerty will serve as chairperson for this once-in-a-lifetime event of food, drinks, entertainment and nostalgia. Milestone sponsors like Donald and Teri Pfeil also helped tremendously in making the library success. Teri was on the Library Board that helped move the library from its out-dated building on Southeast Fourth Avenue and helped build the new building, a gigantic, two-story cathedral of information at 100 W. Atlantic Ave. Donald Pfeil and his group at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, were involved with the library’s endowment campaign. Merrill Lynch Wealth Management has been a supporter and business partner with the library since Merrill Lynch opened an office in the City of Delray Beach back in the 1950s. Louise Weir Glover at Merrill Lynch also helped to make the company a Legacy Sponsor for the events. Sustainer Sponsors include Sandy Simon, GFWC Woman’s Club of Delray Beach, Bank United and IBERIABANK. Contract stipulations require the renaming of several Delray Beach landmarks. Old School Square will become New Mizner Circle. Pineapple Grove will be redeveloped to represent its new name: Big Apple Grove. Atlantic High School will become Northeast Boca High at the beginning of the 201314 school year. And The Delray Beach Library will be turned into a giant Starbucks with books. Atlantic Avenue will not face renaming, but will be modified into a valetonly parking lot, with restricted access. Delray’s new Mayor, Cary Glickstein, will share responsibilities with the current Boca Raton Mayor Susan Whelchel. When asked about the name change, Cary replied (via text) “OMG for realz?!?”

Then, in 1939, the Library Association was founded as a non-profit corporation. Ladies Improvement Association Since that time, library patrons have received free library service through a successful public and private partnership between the City of Delray Beach and the Library Association. The Delray Beach Public Library is not part of the county or city system, but is uniquely funded with public and private funds. The City of Delray Beach and the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) have provided a large percentage of the annual operating budget, and the Library Association has raised all capital funds. “The Centennial year has been an opportunity to commemorate this wonderful milestone in our community. Delray Beach achieves designation as a “Tree City USA” community

March 19, 2013: The City of Delray Beach is proud to announce that it has been recognized as a “Tree City USA” community by the National Arbor Day Foundation. This honor acknowledges the City’s commitment to urban forestry management and environmental improvements. In order to achieve the status of a Tree City USA community, our City was required to meet four (4) standards: • Tree Board or Department • Maintain a Tree Care Ordinance • Provide a Comprehensive Community Program • Celebrate Arbor Day (i.e., Observance and Proclamation) Being honored with a “Tree City USA” designation increases public awareness of the many social, economic and environmental benefits that our City achieves through its efforts to become a greener and more sustainable community. Delray Beach has planted over 10,000 flowers and trees that assist with sustaining air quality while beautifying our community. In addition, this important designation promotes community citizen pride, educates the public on current urban forestry practices and helps to secure financial assistance for other related projects. For more information, contact Jennifer Buce at (561) 243-7138 or E-mail buce@ mydelraybeach.com. The Tree City USA program is a national program that provides the framework for community forestry management for cities and towns across America. Caps of Love project

The Caps of Love, a project to help the handicapped, held an event on February 18th to load boxes of plastic bottle caps that had been collected over the past nine months. At the event, the music soared, the food flowed and the supporters’ handclapping was encouraging. Volunteers and supporters, including participants from South Tech Academy Charter High School and Royal Palm School for the Disabled, were all present and assisted with boxing the caps at Southern Self Storage in Lantana, where the caps have been held in a storage bin donated for this purpose by the storage company. Almost 8 tons of plastic caps were boxed and transported by Home Depot to KW Plastics in Troy, Alabama, where they will be crushed for recycling purposes. The money obtained will be sent to a nonprofit organization for the disabled for the purpose of obtaining service dogs, wheelchairs and whatever the disabled need to enhance their lives. Home Depot and Southern Self Storage’s help and services for the success of this project were invaluable. A great day was had by all, but now the work goes on. The bin is now almost empty, but the collection will continue. The date for transporting the next 8 tons is not known at this time, but it will happen!

City of Delray Beach completes Downtown Gateway Feature The Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) held a public ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, March 14th, commemorating the completion of the Gateway Art Feature at the western entrance to the downtown area. The project, a partnership between the CRA and the City of Delray Beach, is located in the public right-of-way along West Atlantic Avenue, between NW/SW 12th Avenue and Interstate 95. The ceremony was held on the south side of the installation. The Gateway Feature characterizes the uniqueness, history and rich cultural heritage of our community. The Gateway Feature is a result of the City of Delray Beach’s 2002 Downtown Master Plan, which incorporated community input gathered during a series of public workshops. The project signifies the City’s commitment to create a seamless downtown along the Atlantic Avenue corridor from I-95 to A1A. The Gateway creates a substantial and visually appealing entrance to the downtown. Improvements consist of sidewalks, landscaped berms, trellises and six (6) 30-foot columns decorated with artistic mural designs. The murals that decorate the columns are a cultural collage inspired by Delray’s history, architectural elements and tropical flora and fauna, designed by textile artist Michelle Newman. This $1.18 million project was primarily funded by the CRA, which provided approximately $983,082. The balance of funds was provided by a $199,760 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation. To learn more about the Gateway Feature or read the artist’s statement, contact Elizabeth Burrows, CRA Marketing and Grants Manager, at (561) 276-8640 or by email at burrows@ mydelraybeach.com or visit www.delraycra.org. Photos of the Gateway Feature are posted on CRA’s Facebook page, http://on.fb.me/Lzwfio.

Safe solutions to dispose of treated wastewater promotes City’s efforts toward green and sustainable success

Recently, the City of Delray Beach applied for a Florida League of Cities Environmental Stewardship Award for closing a wastewater outfall that was pumping treated sewage into the ocean just off of our City beach. Although the City did not win the award, this effort signifies the importance that the City has placed on the protection of our marine environment, our world class beach and our local economy. This effort has been referenced as the “greenest” and “most sustainable” initiative the City has ever undertaken. The City, along with its partner, Boynton Beach, had been disposing treated sewage into the Atlantic Ocean for more than 40 years. In fact, numerous communities throughout southeast region of Florida have been undertaking (and continue to undertake) this practice. As a result, the State of Florida developed state laws prohibiting the construction of new ocean outfalls, mandated that existing ocean outfalls in Florida “cease” discharging wastewater by December 31, 2018 and directed the development of a reuse water system by December 31, 2025. Both the City of Delray Beach and Boynton Beach, through its partnership at the South Central Regional Waste Water Treatment Plant (SCRWTF), were leading pioneers in halting this environmentally harmful practice. In 2009, the outfall of treated sewage into the ocean was stopped - almost nine (9) years before the State of Florida’s deadline. Rather than sending the treated sewage into the ocean, it now undergoes an extensive tertiary

treatment process meeting “reclaimed water” standards, whereby the remaining effluent is injected 3,500 feet underground through a deep well, capable of injecting up to 18 million gallons of water into the ground. In addition to the practice of disposing treated sewage, the City of Delray Beach became extremely aggressive in developing a reclaimed (reuse) water system that is used to keep golf courses, highway medians, parks and residential lawns green. In fact, the City, in conjunction with the SCRWTF, has met the State of Florida’s requirement to develop and implement a reuse water system that utilizes a minimum of 60 percent of the City’s

wastewater annual flow for beneficial reuse 16 years earlier than required by State law. The success of this program can be shown through the fact that the City is utilizing over half of its reuse water allocation (more than three million gallons per day), thus, reducing the significant need for potable (drinking) water to support landscaping needs. The City of Delray Beach will continue its green and sustainable efforts to protect our natural resources and make our community a great place to live, work and play. For more information, contact the City’s Public Information Office at (561) 243-7190 or E-mail pio@mydelraybeach.com.

One day at Delray Beach in 2008 changed everything for nineteen year old Cruise Bogle and his family. Skim boarding with friends on his first winter break home from college, Cruise was enjoying his friends and a sport he had enjoyed many times before. A freak fall in the water landed Cruise on his head and he sustained a C4 spinal cord injury, paralyzing him immediately from the chest down. Hope, love, grit and support from family, friends and this wonderful community all help keep Cruise persevering forward. He works hard at his rehabilitation as well as pursues artistic and entrepreneurial passions, inspiring all around him. Each year friends and family come together for an incredible evening of fun at what is fondly known as the “Cruiser Palooza”. This community event has become a great venue of live music, silent and live auctions, raffle and dinner, and has a huge attendance. People come from Miami to Tallahassee to enjoy an amazing event that helps raise much needed funds for Cruise’s daily care and therapies. This year’s “Cruiser Palooza” will be held on April 20th 2013 at the Delray Playhouse at 950 NW 9th Street in Delray Beach. The planning is underway to make this the best ever, and the community’s help is needed. There are many ways to give support. A monetary donation, an item for the live or silent auctions, raffle etc…any and all are gratefully accepted. Food and drink donations are also being sought. Showing your support will undoubtedly be beneficial to your business, as this event is attended by so many wonderful, long time Delray Beach neighbors. • Almost 1.5 million people in the U.S. live with a spinal cord injury. • Average first year expenses for a 25 year old with a C4 injury is almost $1,000,000 • Subsequent annual expenses can be over $175,000 • Lifetime expenses for someone under 25 can be over $4,000,000 For more info contact Emilie J. Delray Beach Community Dialogue on Violence plans Prayer Meeting for Peace April 4 event to remember victims of violence in Delray Beach on day MLK was killed Sparked by the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings and multiple murders in Delray Beach, the Delray Beach Community Dialogue on Violence is a grassroots effort encouraging residents to become aware of and respond to violence in our nation, our state, and our community. As a part of this ongoing effort, local faith-based organizations plan to hold a Prayer Meeting for Peace at Libby Wesley Park, West Atlantic Avenue and SW 5th Avenue, in Delray Beach, Thursday, April 4, 2013 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. The Delray Beach Community Dialogue on Violence is sponsored by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Temple Sinai, and Auroras Voice. Elected officials, groups, and individuals interested in ending violence in our society are invited to attend. The program for the one-hour prayer meeting includes music, prayer, and remembrance of the victims of violence, including Martin Luther King. Organizers plan to issue the following calls to action: • Call on the Police Department to institute

a gun buy-back or gun bounty program • Call on the mayor to sign the Mayors Against Illegal Guns statement of principles • Call on elected officials to pass and enforce measures intended to reduce violence The Prayer Meeting for Peace is a follow-up to the Community Dialogue on Violence and Our Culture, held February 10 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Delray Beach. At the February event, expert speakers delivered brief statements on factors related to violence, followed by small group discussions of each factor. The dialogue included local leaders and community members, all of who expressed a wish to develop a longrange dialogue and action plan to eliminate violence, and especially gun violence, in our community, our state, and our nation. In 2000, St. Matthew’s and St. Paul’s cosponsored a Community Dialogue on Racism which included a wide range of civic and political leaders from the city and Palm Beach County to address issues of race and racial reconciliation. Auroras Voice is a nonprofit organization devoted to continuing the work of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. PETPAL

Kelly O’Connor Special to The Pineapple

I

f you are anything like me, you are obsessed with your pet and want to take them with you everywhere you go. Since I love to dine out in downtown Delray Beach and try all of the various new restaurants that seem to be constantly opening, the only thing missing from that is my dog, T.K. aka Tinkle King. He is not only my “son”, providing me a healthy dose of unconditional love and company, but he truly is my life. I have separation anxiety when I am away from him for more than a few hours, so when I am contemplating where to dine, I always take into consideration what restaurants are pet friendly, or at least have outdoor seating. I’m a native South Floridian, specifically the Boca Raton/Delray Beach area, thus my local knowledge is quite extensive. Most people that know me are aware of the two main things I am obsessed with, my dog, T.K., and the color purple. My obsession with both of these things is apparent simply by seeing me walking around downtown Delray Beach pushing T.K. in his purple dog stroller. Yes, he is a male dog but he doesn’t care as long as he is with me. I’d like to clue you in on some local knowledge regarding some of the best pet friendly restaurants in Delray Beach. My opinions are based on great service, ambiance, and food. These criteria are difficult to find in one establishment. As a resident of Delray Beach, I sometimes forget how lucky I am to live in such an amazing town, where the options for unbelievable restaurants are endless. My top three pet friendly dining establishments in the downtown Delray Beach area have to be Caffe Luna Rosa, Mellow Mushroom, and the Green Owl. Luna Rosa is amazing for breakfast or dinner and you simply can not beat the ocean view, directly on A1A. Their

www.DelrayPineapple.com

Crab and Lobster Eggs Benedict is the best I have found. If you pair it with one of their Mimosas or Bloody Marys, there is no way your day can go anywhere but up. Mellow Mushroom’s pizza is an experience in itself. Where else can you go and eat hot potato pie, basically a loaded baked potato on pizza crust. With a huge menu to choose from, you simply can’t go wrong, and everything can be ‘create your own’ if that is what you desire. Mellow Mushroom also has gluten free items and are willing to work with you if you are on a particular diet. I love the ambiance and laid back atmosphere, from the art on the walls, to the staff’s uniforms. The 50 draft beers and another 50 bottled beers don’t hurt either. Their outdoor patio is always great whatever time of year it is. They have different specials every day of the week for drinks and food, so I guarantee that you and your pet will love dining there. Last, but not least is the Green Owl, located on Atlantic Avenue. It has been a go to breakfast spot for T.K. and I for many years. We love to sit outside on the sidewalk and are usually surrounded by more dogs than people. I wouldn’t suggest going there if you are in a rush though. The kitchen is small, so they can only produce a limited amount of orders at a time, but the food is always worth the wait. I suggest taking your pet to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air while you eat and people watch. You will not be disappointed! There are numerous other restaurants that I could list, but these are just a few of my favorites. Feel free to e-mail me for other recommendations at petpaldelray@gmail. com. And check out my website for my pet sitting business, Pet Pal Delray at www. petpaldelray.com. I will love and cherish your pet as if they were my own.

Rodriguez Getting fit and losing weight are consistently in the top three New Year’s resolutions year after year, on virtually any list you can find. Have you ever stopped to wonder why? Most people would simply blame our superficial society and the heavy emphasis on appearance across almost all demographic groups. This is certainly a part of it. Have you ever stopped to consider that maybe it is just plain hard? The answer is yes, losing weight can be very difficult for many individuals for a number of different reasons. Now difficult, by no means, indicates that it is impossible. Difficult means that without a strategic, methodical, well thought out plan, weight loss is either hard to achieve or not sustainable beyond a short period of time. An essential part of a well thought out plan that is often overlooked is to analyze the less obvious reasons that may make losing weight more difficult for any particular individual, as well as the general population. The most significant psychological factor that most people are oblivious to is the depth of the instant gratification fixation. We all know about instant gratification, having dealt with it since childhood. What we may not realize is that this seemingly simple principle has many layers of complexity that develop as we reach adulthood. The depth that I am referring to is best exemplified in the almost compulsive tendency of people to chase fad diet after fad diet. Fad dieting does not work. If it did you would not be reading this. Fad diets are immensely successful at generating revenue for the companies that promote them, yet abysmal failures when it comes to sustainable weight loss for the great majority of the population. How can that

Why is losing weight so hard? be possible? They capitalize on the natural human preference for instant gratification. Unless we are trained otherwise, we humans will consistently pick instant gratification over delayed gratification. We can further intensify this tendency by repeatedly making immediately gratifying choices. In situations involving obesity, more often than not, there are long standing patterns of instantly gratifying self-indulgence with food. Due to the frequency of the physiologic need to eat, the opportunity to make these types of choices comes along rather often. When food becomes a vehicle for quick gratification, whether it is for pleasure or to quell emotions, the behavior can become deeply ingrained. This tendency is easily transferred over to fad dieting, due to the quick results often seen. Fad diets yield quick results and no one can argue that. The problem lies in that the results are not sustainable and the several pounds of fat, muscle and bone that are lost are fully regained in the form of mostly body fat. The greater problem really lies in that the very behavior we are trying to retrain, repetitive instant gratification, is actually reinforced by fad dieting. That type of dieting, despite being presented as a solution for the problem, actually makes the problem worse at the very core of the human behavioral drive. The ultimate solution does involve the human behavioral drive, but not in the manner affected by fad diets. The key to success in weight loss involves retraining the individual to thrive on delayed gratification while implementing a personalized nutritional plan that avoids triggering hunger and caters to the individual’s metabolic profile. The specificity of the meal plan to the needs of the individual is of critical importance. Certain foods that work well for one person may not be nearly as effective for someone else. These trends are not governed by simple rules but can be effectively identified by an experienced nutritionist. This is where professional

consultation can really make a difference. The correct meal plan, together with a consistent exercise regimen, results in a sustainable loss of body fat with preservation of muscle and bone mass. This type of weight loss does not happen as quickly as what you would see with a fad diet, but it also does not trigger a rebound weight gain. Doing it the right way does take some work and patience, but when you get there you are much more likely to stay there. The steady weight loss also provides the delayed gratification we seek. You can harness even more gratification by shifting your focus away from a “target weight” and actually settling in and enjoying the journey. The process of learning and embracing a healthy lifestyle can actually be immensely pleasurable in and of itself. Make it fun. Make it something you look forward to rather than looking at it as work. You may actually experience more satisfaction and happiness from the positive life changes than from the actual weight loss. SPRING CLEANING

People like “stuff”. We tend to hold onto it year after year. We save and stock up on things that we don’t know what to do with anymore. Maybe we keep things because they hold precious memories of days gone by, or they remind us of our parents, grandparents, past loves or childhood. To part with these precious possessions seems out of the question. There is a saying that goes, “You have to get rid of the old to make way for the new.” If you are feeling stuck or stagnant in your life, try spring-cleaning. Throw out some of that stuff, say goodbye to your past and welcome your new healthy future. Try these three ideas: 1. For good mental and physical health, we actually have two “houses” that need to be spring-cleaned: our physical homes and our physical bodies. Just as we accumulate “stuff” in the form of outgrown clothes, magazines, rusty bicycles, tools and random keepsakes, so do our bodies accumulate old food residues and toxins that need to be cleaned out. 2. To spring clean your body, give it a break from rich and complicated foods by either cleansing or fasting for a short period of time. Cleansing means paring down your food to just simple fruits and vegetables, lots of water and perhaps whole grains. Fasting means limiting most foods and drinking lots of water, fresh vegetable and fruit juices, teas and soups. Without much energy going toward digestion, more energy is available to the rest of your body and mind. Cleansing and fasting can sharpen your concentration, help you gain insight and promote spiritual awareness. It can also bring improved immune function and better digestion. 3. While you’re cleaning out your body and home, don’t forget to spring-clean your heart. Throw away negative thoughts and habits you’ve been harboring that no longer serve you. A clean, open heart will allow you to receive all the good that awaits you each and every day. If

your heart and mind are cluttered, there is no room for life’s gifts and surprises to enter. Focus Food for Spring Cleaning: GREENS Leafy greens are the vegetables most missing from the American diet and are some of the easiest and most beneficial vegetables to incorporate into your daily routine. Densely packed with energy and nutrients, they grow upward to the sky, absorbing the sun’s light while producing oxygen. Members of this royal green family include kale, collard greens, Swiss chard, mustard greens, arugula, dandelion greens, broccoli rabe, watercress, beet greens, bok choy, napa cabbage, green cabbage, spinach and broccoli. Greens are extremely beneficial to our bodies because they are very high in calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorous and zinc, and are a powerhouse for vitamins A, C, E and K. They are crammed full of fiber, folic acid, chlorophyll and many other micronutrients and phytochemicals. Their color is associated with spring, which is a time to renew and refresh vital energy. Greens aid in purifying the blood, strengthening the immune system, improving liver, gall bladder and kidney function, fighting depression, clearing congestion, improving circulation and keeping your skin clear and blemish free. On loving being a Holistic Reflexologist… By Laura Norman Special to The Pineapple

B

How does Holistic Reflexology accomplish these benefits? Studies have shown that stimulating specific reflex areas and points on the feet, hands, ear and face affect each organ, gland and part of the body, as well having a profound effect on the nervous, circulatory and endocrine systems. It is believed that Reflexology improves and balances the energy flow along the body’s energy pathways (known as meridians in Chinese medicine). The outcome? People feel physically stronger, mentally clearer, calmer and more grounded, and experience a more powerful connection to their higher Self. Many also report improved circulation, better skin tone, improved digestion and elimination and normalized blood pressure levels. Why do I love being a Holistic Reflexologist? I have watched my clients experience amazing shifts in their lives. Many become motivated and inspired to pass on the healing they have received. Some come from corporate and other unrelated fields of work to become Holistic Reflexologists, either full-time or as a second career, to provide meaningful service, and to contribute to their loved ones and communities. Linda is a mother who came to me because she was looking for a new way to support and nurture her family, especially her child who was asthmatic. Using the

HAPPY HOUR FOR A CURE

Benefiting The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis received permission from the Food & Drug Administration to begin a revolutionary Phase 1 Clinical Trial to evaluate the safety of transplanting human Schwann cells to treat patients with recent spinal cord injuries. In January 2013, we shared the news of Miami Project doctors and scientists performing the first ever FDA approved Schwann cell transplantation in an individual with a new spinal cord injury. The validation of the tireless efforts being undertaken at The Miami Project offers real hope and illustrates we are closer than ever to finding a cure.

eing a Holistic Reflexologist is extremely fulfilling and rewarding on many levels. During my fortyone years of practice, Holistic Reflexology has been such a wonderful vehicle and powerful tool to help my family, friends and clients. Being capable of supporting someone who is experiencing physical pain, emotional stress, physical or mental fatigue and exhaustion is so personally satisfying. Then seeing immediate, positive results both during and after a Holistic Reflexology session is a real blessing. What is a Reflexology session like? Imagine walking into a candle lit room with soft music playing. The delicious aroma of pure essential oils fills your nostrils. After completing a health history you discuss how you would like to direct the energy of your session, including any personal and professional goals you wish to focus on. Then you remove only your shoes and socks, and lie down on a cushy, padded massage table. You close your eyes as your Reflexologist applies specific techniques using gentle, but firm, thumb and finger pressure, soothing thousands of nerves in the feet, hands, ears and face. My clients tell me that, after a session, they feel their pain diminished or gone. They are calm, relaxed, at peace and filled with energy and vitality–clear, centered and able to focus on accomplishing their goals.

New study finds public redevelopment investment creates 20x the amount of private redevelopment investment New analysis finds it took only $19 million public dollars to generate approximately $371 million in private investment

A new study examining the effect of government Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) investment in several Florida municipalities has found that for every single dollar spent by a CRA on redevelopment, that same area benefited from twenty additional dollars being invested in redevelopment by the private sector over the same period of time. The study also showed the investment created over 2,000 new temporary and permanent jobs. In addition, over the same period of time, the study found CRA’s funded $136.2 million in infrastructure improvements that did not have to be paid for with city general budget dollars. The analysis was done by the Florida redevelopment firm Redevelopment Management Associates, (RMA) and conducted on behalf of the Florida Redevelopment Association. The study looked at spending by CRAs from 2008 to 2013 in seven Florida municipalities. They include the cities of Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Hollywood, Margate, Hallandale, and Deerfield Beach as well as the town of Davie. Over the five years analyzed by RMA (with information provided by each CRA), a total of $19,475,516 in TIF funds (dollars generated inside a CRA’s boundaries for the purpose of redevelopment, and separate from a municipalities general revenues) was spent by the various CRAs through redevelopment programs. These funds led to $371,836,097 in private sector investment and the creation of 2,147 jobs. The numbers represent a 20:1 ratio of private versus public dollars invested in the community.

April 2013 • 17

These numbers don’t take into account any private sector investment that may have taken place in surrounding areas outside the CRAs’ boundaries. The study also found that from 2008 to 2013, the seven municipalities benefited from $136.2 million in infrastructure improvements paid for with CRA TIF dollars, and not with general city/town funds. “We’ve been doing redevelopment for over 30 years, and even we were surprised by the final numbers,” said RMA principal Kim Briesemeister. “The fact that CRA spending sparked twenty times the amount of private investment speaks volumes about the value of CRA investment. But this is exactly why CRAs exist. Their mission is to boost economic redevelopment in areas that desperately need it without passing the cost on to cities. At the same time, it’s the cities that benefit both from the CRA dollars invested but also, as this study shows, from the overwhelming private sector spending that follows.” “This mirrors my experience in such successful CRAs as Delray Beach, Florida where we were able to leverage a relatively small amount of public money as compared to the amount of private investment it created,” said RMA Principal Chris Brown. Brown launched the redevelopment of Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, considered one of the most successful redevelopment examples in the state of Florida. “It’s the private sector investment that is essential to maintain and fuel the redevelopment CRAs are able to do this without costing taxpayers, yet it’s the taxpayers who benefit by surrounding escalating property values.” A copy of the study is available upon request. GIVING BACK Al Jacquet

Passion for public service

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.” – Robert Frost

There are so many different paths one can take in life. Some are long and hard, some are slow and steady, and some are winding and lead you right back to where you began. All of our path’s led us to Delray Beach, and for a significant portion of our community, that path was the dream of a better life in the land of opportunity. Many have come and not all will succeed, but it is the stories of those who achieved their dream that keeps the spark lit for all the rest. The son of immigrant parents who left Haiti for the US, with dreams of a better future for their five young children, Al Jacquet was raised with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity he was given. With no more than a middle-school education, Jacquet’s parents tirelessly encouraged him to take advantage of the endless possibilities this country could offer. Having arrived in Delray Beach in time to begin third-grade at Banyan Creek Elementary School, Jacquet was pushed to take education seriously – and to say he did would be an understatement. From playing French horn in the school band, to wrestling and track and field state finalist, to Future Business Leaders of America, Spanish National Honor Society and Baccalaureate student, Jacquet gave his I was very lucky to have parents absolute all to every laid in front who understood the immense value opportunity of him. DID YOU EVER WONDER ?

By Harvey Brown Special to The Pineapple

Question: If I had only a few minutes before my home was destroyed, what should I take? Answer: Obviously people and pets are THE most important! After making sure they are secure and safely out, you should have a small container with the following: 1. Photos and family videos on CDs and DVDs 2. Emergency cash 3. Insurance: a. Agent contact information b. Policy numbers (don’t worry about the policies themselves)

One handy tip we recommend in advance of a storm or any other insurable event (such as a fire) is to walk around your home and video each room in detail. If you can, provide a commentary with the video to help with the description of your property. This video will help you immensely should you need to make a claim for a major loss. Keep this video either “on the cloud” in a web mailbox or storage, or if you have a physical storage method such as a flash drive, keep it in a location separate from your home such as a relative’s home or in a safe-deposit box at your bank. Once you get together your important items, place your small container somewhere on the first floor, preferably by an exit or on your exit-route out of your home. We hope you will never need it, but once you have it

New online service, iCheckContractors.com allows Floridians to vet their contractors Professional licensing, workers’ compensation, and corporate status detailed on report By Kia Ricchi Special to The Pineapple Finding contractors for repairs, remodels, and new construction has never been easier. From referrals to advertisements, candidates are abundant. But contractor horror stories also abound—how can you avoid a construction nightmare? Vetting your prospective contractor just got a whole lot easier. iCheckContractors. com verifies Florida contractors’ professional licensing, workers’ comp insurance, and corporate status with government agencies, and then issues a full report. “It’s the CarFax for contractors,” says Kia Ricchi, licensed contractor and founder of iCheckContractors.com.

“Although many contractors are upstanding and honest individuals, contractors sometimes lie about their qualifications. This deceit can range from verbal exaggerations to cleverly forged documents,” says Ricchi. “To ensure that a contractor meets your state’s standards for contracting, credentials must be checked.” iCheckContractors.com also takes the guesswork out of credentialing. Because there are many types of licenses, it is important to know the specific purpose of each. Only the professional license authorizes an individual to perform a trade. The iCheckContractors. com’s report details the contractor’s professional license number and type, status, and compliant history. The workers’ compensation section addresses status, carrier, and authorized exemptions. Corporate standing is also documented. This service is affordably priced at just $89 per report. “Regrettably, many people discover that

an unqualified contractor costs them twice as much because the work must be redone. And these costs are minor compared to an expensive personal injury claim from an uninsured worker,” says Ricchi. “Beware of the contractor who asks you to pull a permit because it may indicate that the contractor is unqualified to do so.” To learn more about contractor credentials and common pitfalls, visit the Knowledge Center at www.iCheckContractors.com. Kia Ricchi is a Florida licensed contractor, consultant, and author of Avoiding the Con in Construction—winner of three national book awards and included in the Library Journal’s “Best of” list. She is a contributor to NPR affiliate stations, Remodeling Magazine, and FineHomebuilding.com, and is quoted in TheStreet.com, Inman.com, Lowes.com, and MoneyPit.com. Ricchi is a speaker at this year’s 2013 Florida Governor’s Hurricane Conference.

biz briefs ROTARY CLUB OF DELRAY BEACH NOTES DELRAY BEACH, FL – The Delray Beach Rotary recognized Atlantic H.S. Senior, Tevin Spells, for Student of The Month honors during its weekly luncheon meeting at The Delray Beach Library. Atlantic H.S. Biology Teacher, Joseph McDonald, was awarded Teacher of The Month recognition. The senior student athlete plans to attend The University Of Tennessee on a football scholarship in the fall. Atlantic High School Principal, Dr. Anthony Lockhart commended Spells and McDonald as an outstanding student leader and teacher respectively, who each generate a positive impact on the quality of the educational atmosphere at the Atlantic High School. In other business President Michael Campbell presented a “State of The Club” address to the assembly. Campbell reiterated that 2012/13 was and is a dramatic year as he completes his second and final term as President of The Delray Rotary. He stated that during his last term as President, the Club has changed it’s meeting venue to the Library, welcomed new members, awarded over $10,000.00 in student scholarships, assisted numerous families and causes in the community and otherwise had a genuine impact on the quality of life here in Delray Beach. He remembered The Late Rotarian; Jim Pignato as a role model for his distinguished life of service and for his devotion to Rotary and to the community. Mr. Campbell urged the local Rotarians to continue to embrace the ideals of Rotary and to pursue the opportunities to take an active leadership role in the mission of Rotary to serve with distinction. Campbell urged the local Rotarians to expand the club’s influence and to utilize the social media available to advertise and to reach out to the community. “We must continue to recruit and to welcome members who want to make a difference and to serve the community”, he stated. “We still have to develop a web page and to design a major fund raiser to support our scholarship and service objectives. It will take input from all of our membership to achieve these objectives and I am confident that we can succeed” Campbell also expressed his optimism that this local Rotary Club will continue to place “Service Above Self” as a priority and to meet the challenges facing service clubs in the United States and throughout the world. NEW PADDLEBOARD SHOP NORTH 2 PADDLEBOARDS OPENS IN DELRAY BEACH Owners Ryan Pena and Clayton Dunn are excited to announce the opening of their new paddleboard shop located at 3860 N Federal Highway in Delray Beach. The shop envisions itself a source for all things paddleboard related, including new and used paddleboards, paddles, and accessories.

A few of the brands North 2 will carry are, NuWave Paddleboards (out of Cocoa Beach, FL), H2O Generation Paddleboards, North 2 Paddleboards (their exclusive shop brand), Bogaert Paddleboards (a local custom board shaper), SUPATX Paddleboards, and Kenalu paddles. They also offer paddleboard rentals, tours, “paddle-fit” classes, and paddleboard ecotours to places such as Biscayne Bay, Miami, and Peanut Island in West Palm Beach. Paddleboading is the fastest growing water sport today, and its no wonder since it is such a great way to get into shape, re-connect with our beautiful ocean and waterways, and catch some waves out in the surf lineup. Ryan Pena, and Clayton Dunn are both true watermen. They became good friends

while paddleboarding off Delray Beach’s “North 2” area of the city’s beach. Pena was born in Southern California where he learned to surf and found his love for the ocean in the North County San Diego area near Encinitas and “Swami’s” surf break. A graduate of Ithaca College, he worked as a police officer for five years in the Denver Colorado Metro area before going into business for himself. Pena also runs and maintains the “Delray Beach Paddleboard Club” through meetup. com, and organizes and hosts weekly paddleboard outings with other enthusiasts. Dunn, a Delray Beach native and long time South Florida surfer has over 40 years experience in the surf industry. At a time he even worked in a surfboard factory with Nomad Surfboards back in the 1970’s and 80’s. He has owned and operated an interior remodeling business here in the Delray Beach area as well for years. Pena and Dunn got into this business because they truly love the sport and want to “spread the stoke” so that everyone will know why paddleboarding is the best thing on water. CANDIDATES FORUM HOSTED BY DELRAY BEACH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DRAWS AUDIENCE OF MORE THAN 220 PEOPLE Moderated by Veteran Television Newsman Jim Sackett Feb. 28 Event Highlighted Candidates for Mayor and Commission More than 220 people packed the Crest Theater at the Delray Beach Center for the Arts to listen as candidates for mayor and city commission shared their views on important issues facing Delray Beach.

Moderator Jim Sackett appears on a large screen behind Delray Beach City Commission candidates

Hosted by the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce, the Feb. 28 candidates forum was moderated by veteran television newsman Jim Sackett and drew more than three times as many people as had attended the forum last year. “The large turnout illustrates just how valuable a forum of this nature, hosted by an independent organization such as the Chamber, is to our residents,” said Connor Lynch, chair of the Chamber’s Governmental Affairs Committee, which organized the event. “Once again, Jim Sackett did an exceptional job of moderating the forum, asking tough questions and keeping the candidates on track.” This year’s forum featured a format in which candidates not only had an opportunity to respond to questions from Sackett but also from one another. All candidates running for mayor and for city commission participated in the forum. “One of the more important roles for our Chamber is serving as an information conduit, connecting local government with our members, our business community and our residents,” said Chamber President Karen Granger. “This forum is one more way we can achieve that goal.” Granger said the forum would not have been possible without the support of many in the community. “We are grateful to all of the candidates for their participation, to Jim Sackett for bringing his moderating skills to our event, and to the Delray Beach Center for the Arts, which played a key role in making this candidates forum so successful,” Granger said.

LOCAL WEALTH MANAGEMENT FIRM CREATES HANDS ON LEARNING EXPERIENCE AT PRIVATE UNIVERSITY Lynn students challenged with determining the return on investment of social media strategies BOCA RATON, FL – On February 27th a semester of hard work and academic research culminated when a cohort of MBA students from Lynn University presented their case study to be graded by their professor Dr. Jose Lopez, constituents, and a panel of Wealth Management professionals led by Jeremy Office, Principal of Maclendon Wealth Management in Delray Beach. At the beginning of the semester Dr. Lopez had his syllabus all mapped out for his students until he was approached by Thomas Kruczek, the Dean of the College of Business, with a unique opportunity to bring real world experience into the classroom. Previously, Jeremy Office, a Lynn PhD graduate, contacted Dean Kruczek with the idea of doing a case study on his business. He said that he wanted to begin marketing Maclendon Wealth Management, but he could not find convincing data that justified the use of social media as a promotional platform for a financial services company. They both agreed this would be a strong case study for Dr. Lopez’s MBA students. Dr. Lopez embraced the idea and informed his students that they should scrap the syllabus he previously provided and instead prepare for a real life case study. That week, Office spoke to the MBA students about the financial services industry, his Wealth Management practice, and the challenges that the industry faces when marketing to the super affluent. The group was then tasked with determining the appropriate marketing mix for Maclendon and the tangible economic value that would be attained through their proposed social media strategy. This task was particularly difficult because the class had to apply their case study specifically to the Wealth Management

industry, which has tight regulatory controls on marketing and social media. The class was divided into sub-groups that were assigned different marketing mediums such as: traditional print advertising, internet marketing, social media, events etc. They were given six weeks to research, administer surveys, and collect market data to build their case. The more compelling their case, the higher the grade they received in the course. Office and his team were invited back to the last class to observe as the sub-groups presented their recommendations to the panel for grading. The MBA students used linear programing techniques to determine the ROI on social media and recommend a compelling marketing mix tailored to Maclendon and their industry, proving that affluent investors are in fact using social media to make financial decisions. Office commented: “I am delighted at the quality of the work from these students. It speaks to the education they are receiving and the gap that innovation is narrowing between experience and education. As a business owner, it is imperative that we engage the next generation of business leaders through direct involvement in these real world applications so they are better prepared for tomorrow.” Be on the lookout for Maclendon’s implementation of the ideas presented by the Lynn students. Greater Boca Raton Estate Planning Council Awards Scholarships to Students BOCA RATON, FL – More than 90 members and guests attended a meeting of the Greater Boca Raton Estate Planning Council (GBREPC) on February 19 at the newly named GEO Group Stadium on the Florida Atlantic University campus in Boca Raton. The dinner and educational session was graciously sponsored by US Trust and featured David Ratcliffe of US Trust who spoke on the topic of “ Asking the Philanthropic Question.” With 30 years in the field, Ratcliffe is an alumnus of Wake Forest University and is currently the National Sales Executive for US Trust Philanthropic Solutions. “We feel that advisors are focused mostly on tax benefits or transferring wealth to family and often times philanthropy becomes a secondary conversation,” said Ratcliffe. “Often it is never brought up unless the client mentions it themselves. What I am attempting to share with the tax, legal and financial community is that it is possible to integrate philanthropy into a client’s overall wealth management and wealth transfer plan in order to impact both philanthropic and non-philanthropic interests.” Lanny Marks, GBREPC president, announced the recipients of GBREPC scholarships. A total of $6,250 in scholarship awards were given to Florida Atlantic University, Lynn University, Palm Beach State College and five local area high schools. In addition, $500 in monetary and food donations were given to Boca Helping Hands. Representing Florida Atlantic

University at the dinner was Mary Jane Saunders, president of Florida Atlantic University. “We here at FAU are always impressed by the generosity of our local community,” said Saunders. “So many of the students at Florida Atlantic University are first generation in college, and scholarship support is very important to all of them so they may complete their degrees.”

Funding Higher Education By Ed Maass The Pineapple Staff Writer As a parent/grandparent we love our children/grandchildren and thus want to help them succeed the best we can. One way of doing so is planning for and funding the cost of higher education. I have written this column to offer personal insight about a plan (choice) I have made for my grandchildren and why. So, for those of you who are parents or grandparents let’s get started with what I believe is a great way to plan for and fund a college education for your child/grandchild. As a new parent the euphoric feeling of having a baby is the greatest ever, however in what I assure you will be a short 18 years, (may not feel like it sometimes….), but trust me they grow up fast, it will be time for your son or daughter to head off to college. Other than a fully paid scholarship when that time comes what would be better than having an accumulated sum of money that can be used for educational expenses completely Tax free from federal income tax? As a proud grandparent (like me), how great would it make you feel to set aside money in an account for your grandchildren’s college education, yet retain complete and total control of the money and as an added benefit remove the asset (dollar amount) from your estate thus reducing estate taxes? All of this and more can be accomplished through using a 529 plan. This plan is a qualified state-sponsored program for taxdeferred college savings that can be used to pay for education expenses on a tax-free basis at any eligible college, university, or graduate school anywhere in the United States. Qualified expenses include tuition, fees, books, supplies as well as room and board for students living either on or off campus. Furthermore, almost anyone can contribute to a 529 plan – parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters and the list goes on. It is important not to confuse the 529 plan with the original state pre-paid college tuition program. They are not one in the same and the differences are significant. Under a 529 plan each individual state selects a professional money management firm to use as the portfolio manager for the assets within that state sponsored plan. You, the investor, then select which state sponsored

529 plan best suits your needs based upon the investment management firm, the underlying investment choices, time horizons and, if relevant, potential state tax implications. For example, those of us living in Florida are not subject to a state income tax. Therefore, this would not be a factor in selecting a 529 plan. However, for those who live in New York, it may certainly be a consideration. Once the 529 plan is established, you can make deposits for as little as $250.00 up to a maximum of $140,000 for a married couple. The actual limits as of this writing are: $14,000 per person ($28,000 for married couples) per year without gift tax consequences, and, if you choose to use a special election, you can accelerate up to five years worth of investments in one-year thereby depositing up to $70,000 per person ($140,000 for married couples). Another great benefit of this plan is if it was set up for one child and that child is smart enough, and/or fortunate enough to get a full scholarship you can then simply change who the plan benefits to another child, grandchild or even yourself. In my opinion, the 529 plan is the smartest way to save and accumulate funds for higher education expenses. If you think that a 529 plan may be beneficial for your children or grandchildren, please do your homework before taking action as there is much to know before parting with your dough. Recommend that you visit: www.savingforcollege.com to learn more. Point to note! A 529 plan is simply a funding vehicle and does not in any way guarantee admission to any specific college or university. FT. LAUDERDALE, FL – South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) announced its 2013 Spring Fever Challenge to enable the organization to sustain its artistic excellence and dazzling programming. The Spring Fever Challenge is being inaugurated with a generous new gift of $10,000 from retired Wall Street financier, Joseph Griffin and his partner, Mary Lou Schillinger a longtime Ocean Ridge resident and active supporter of many local causes. The donors, proud of SFSO’s recent success, believe in its mission, and want to help SFSO move forward with the matching challenge by “seeding” the total $30,000 with a gift of $10,000, with a goal of meeting or exceeding the challenge by the end of the April Concert Series on April 9th. Coming from a musical family and inspired by Wagner as a trumpeter in High School, Griffin said “I have an undying devotion to the arts and love the unique sound of the South Florida Symphony. I am also determined to have professional symphonic music at the Crest Theatre in Delray Beach.” SFSO President and CEO Jacqueline Lorber said, “When we learned about this amazingly generous gift, I was moved and grateful for the extraordinary benevolence shown for our Mission and the communities we serve. Our donors are, frankly, exceptional, and we are committed to them to ensure the work we do is exceptional. This matching challenge gift and the donors who join us, make it possible for SFSO to continue to bring the music to the stage that inspires us. We are your orchestra. We couldn’t do as much as we do without generous gifts like this. You can contribute to this campaign by visiting www.southfloridasymphony.org/ springfeverchallenge Donations of any size will be matched by this challenge and go directly to support music that inspires each of us. Please give now to support SFSO endeavors to engage, excite and enrich lives through the performance of intellectually and emotionally powerful symphonic music.

Donations such as these allow SFSO to provide the region with 34 concerts and events serving over 10,000 annually. Donations can be mailed to South Florida Symphony Orchestra, 221 SW 3rd Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312 or made online at www.southfloridasymphony.org/ springfeverchallenge For more information, or to learn more about how you can help reach the matching gift goal, please call Jacqueline Lorber, President/CEO at 954-522-8445.

The new mission - relamp America America saves money giving veterans a job

H

ow many veterans does it take to change a light bulb? Just one. How many veterans does it take to change all of America’s 18 billion lights? 500,000 veterans! American business and governments on all levels can help create jobs for our returning warriors by letting those who have served our country simply change your old lighting to high quality, energy efficient LED lamps and fixtures. America’s veterans have a new mission – relamp America! Taft Durst Inc., a Delray Beach, Floridabased company that does business as Vet LEDs, recently announced the formal launch of the Veterans Lighting Initiative. The Initiative can and will help solve multiple issues and problems in our country today and literally everyone can agree that it is in everyone’s interest to do so. The CEO of Vet LEDs, Randy M. Durst, a Vietnam veteran, created the concept after reading the news article about the difficulty veterans were having getting good jobs in the economic climate we face today. Durst noted, “It occurred to me that hiring veterans to install LED lighting was a nobrainer. Over the course of the next two years, hundreds of thousands of our military servicemen and women will be returning to a very uncertain future as a transition back into civilian life. The Veterans Lighting Initiative will create thousands of good paying jobs for those veterans and their families. I looked at the pace at which our businesses and governments have been retrofitting our infrastructure with new energy-efficient lighting products and wondered why it wasn’t happening faster.” What about the high cost of LED products? Durst was quick to add that the higher cost of an LED lamp puts off many people. “It seems to be a knee-jerk reaction to the thought of spending $15-$50 for light

bulb. One customer in Boston flatly stated that he would never buy a $45 LED light. I showed him the numbers. When you factor in incentives that many utility companies are offering today, the ROI was less than 60 days. Needless to say, he bought the lamps.” “Yes, it is cheaper in the short term to buy a CFL but it is more expensive to operate than the LED. Today we can replace a 100W incandescent lamp with a 26W CFL or a 10W LED. If the company is using them more than six hours a day, then it makes sense to use the LED. The savings generated by the lower wattage more than makes up for the higher cost. And don’t even get me started on the mercury in the lamps or the real cost of trying to recycle. Sadly many people don’t take the time to recycle as they should and simply throw them out, into our landfills.” Vet LEDs offers customers a variety of services, principal among them is the Energy Savings Performance Program, which is very important for many businesses today that don’t have the cash available for the purchase of the LED lamps or fixtures. “Let the lamps pay for themselves” Vet LEDs tells their customers. When 100W lamp is replaced with a 10W LED lamp, there is 90W of savings. Take 45W of savings to pay for the lamps over time, and the customer is immediately realizes 45W of savings. “That’s real money in their pockets” smiled Randy. “No upfront cost, and they create jobs for vets. That’s a win-win!” As if that wasn’t enough, Vet LEDs offers to donate $1 for every lamp and $5 for every fixture installed to a veterans organization of the customer’s choice. “The customers love this. Many of them already support veterans organizations and this lets them to do even more, all to the benefit of our veterans.” For more information contact call 561965-5258 or email randy@vetleds.com

Whether you are a diver, snorkeler or just enjoy the water, the Scuba Center Delray is worth a visit. I wasn’t there for more than two minutes before they put a cup of coffee in one hand and a Belgian cookie in the other as we settled down for a nice chat. I’m not the only one that gets the royal treatment though. Their regulars all have their own coffee mugs that line the wall in the corner of their shop. The regulars are locals of course, but they also visit from New York and New Jersey among other locales.

Classes are at your convenience. There is no schedule. It’s practically like having a private dive course.”

Don’t let the congenial atmosphere fool you however. These people are experts in the dive industry. Not only do they repair respirators for the Delray Beach Fire Department, they also handle repairs from all over the USA. I met Lee Pickens (the owner) and William Tuzinsky a.k.a Taz (instructor) when I popped into the shop unannounced. Both Taz and Lee were walking encyclopedias of historical and ecological information. For example, did you know that Delray Beach sits right on the 3rd longest reef in the world? It is second only to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Mesoamerica Barrier Reef in Cozumel. South Florida’s reef stretches from the Keys to Jupiter and the Scuba Center team has experienced it all. No matter if you are a beginner or experienced diver, The Scuba Center has it all. They offer PADI Open Water Certification, dive gear rentals, guide services and scuba equipment sales. If you want to learn to dive, this is the place in Delray. For $330 you get academic instruction, 2 pool sessions (they use the City’s Pool at Pompey Park) and two dive trips – two dives from the beach and two from a boat. It is truly an all inclusive experience. “All you need is a bathing suit and a towel”, Lee likes to say. And get this. Classes are at your convenience. There is no schedule. It’s practically like having a private dive course.

The Scuba Center also organizes dive trips. Their next trip in April will be to the Vandenburg wreck in Key West. They have organized trips to places like Aruba, but most of their clients like to stay right here in Palm Beach county, where we have some of the most beautiful waters and wildlife anywhere. No doubt you’ve passed by the Scuba Center before. It’s on Federal Highway going north, right across from 5th Avenue Grill. Look for the dive flag next time you pass by. The shop is open 7 days a week and both Lee and Taz will be there to welcome you with a cup of coffee. If Taz isn’t there, you’ll find him and the other divemasters at Breathe in West Atlantic, quite an apropos hangout for those who deal in respirators.

GIVING BACK - Al Jacquet - continued from page 17

to dedicate his career to helping better the world. With the mentoring of his law school dean Bob Butterworth, former Attorney General, Mayor, Judge and State Trooper, Jacquet was shown how to bridge his passion for helping people with public service and elected office. Jacquet spent three years working in Tallahassee in the House of Representatives with State Rep. Mack Bernard, and was seriously considering running for state office when he realized Delray Beach was where he wanted to be – working to help the people of the community that gave so much to his family. Since making the decision to dedicate himself here, Jacquet has not looked back. A champion of education, he spends the majority of his time at local schools, reading, tutoring and mentoring. “I was very lucky to have parents who understood the immense value of education, and while they were not educated themselves, they pushed me to focus and appreciate the opportunity,” explains Jacquet. So many young people in our community are not as fortunate as I and they deserve a mentor to push them and believe in them as much as I had,” he adds. Last year Jacquet and fellow community leader Lee Cohen started The Edge, a local mentoring group focused on education and life skills. The group deals with everything from helping members find employment, to learning how to deal with hardship and personal issue. “The youth are our future and we need to do everything we can to guarantee them a quality education and a safe environment to live and thrive,” says Jacquet. When Jacquet decided to run for seat 2 on the Delray Beach City Commission, many thought he had no chance. The run for the seat was a four-way race and had been occupied for six years by the running incumbent. Jacquet went to the people and secured the vote of 1,500 residents who had

never voted in a city election before. The historic win made Jacquet the first person of color ever to win the seat, and also marked the first time two people of color sat on the commission at the same time. Elected at the age of 32, Jacquet is also one of the youngest commissioners in Delray Beach history. With his dedication to the city’s youth, Jacquet has used his win to remind this community that anything is possible when you believe in yourself and you are willing to work. While there is no doubt he will continue to mentor Delray Beach students, his story, if shared, will be the shining star many young people in the community will use as a beacon to guide them against adversity and into their dreams. Delray Beach is fortunate to have Al Jacquet for the service he provides as a commissioner, as a mentor and as an example that pride and love for your community can make a real difference.

Art House of Delray

By Stephanie Immelman

A

rt House of Delray proudly features abstract artist Amy LaBonte. LaBonte currently has her studio at Art House where she works on her abstract paintings. Her works are colorful, intricate imagespatterns of pure color, delicate lines and markings of delineation which juxtapose structure and randomness, offering a sort of map or pathway through zones of chaos. According to LaBonte, her work emerges “from my interaction with the dangers, trials, and joys which we all encounter.”. She further explains her works, “When I work on a painting, I go through a kind of tribulation, one which may sometimes attempt to prevent my passage through the eye of its needle. But in persevering, there is reward. Art, and the act of painting, opens the door to zones of innocence. It cleanses my soul.” www.amylabonte.com

What is your idea of perfect happiness? Cessation of suffering for all sentient beings. What is your greatest fear? The throes of consensual reality. Where do you find artistic inspiration? Looking at art in my dreams and waking life, listening to music and silence. Which living person do you most admire? Anyone who defies the odds, with kindness. Who is your favorite artist? All the Abstract Expressionists.

“GATHERING”

What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Acquisitiveness. Which words or phrases do you most overuse? “Let me check the astrology and get back to you.” When did your first know that you had to become an artist? The first time I smelled paint. What is your greatest regret? I should have been more patient. What or who is the greatest love of your life? My husband: friend, fan and helpful critic.

When and where were you happiest? Perched on my bike at the top of a hill during summer as a kid, propeller plane overhead, cicadas buzzing – taking in the enormity of existence. Which talent (other than being an artist) would you most like to have? Oh, to sing! If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I would have a fantastic singing voice. What do you consider your greatest artistic achievement? That I’ve gotten this far. If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be? A song of peace and happiness. What is your most treasured possession? A poem I wrote for my mother when I was eight years old. I found it tucked in her wallet after she passed away a few years ago. What do you most value in your friends? Zaniness, loyalty, empathy. Who are your heroes in real life? Those who speak up and protect. What is it that you most dislike? Cruelty beyond belief. What is your motto? Everything is everything.

Swinton Ave. in Delray Beach. Hundreds of teenage girls and the women who love them will participate in a multi-speaker interactive event. “A Day to Remember” will be just that. With performance, inspiration, and fun. This event is designed to uplift and empower the voice of the teenage female. “Teenage girls who receive timely coaching, education and mentoring are better equipped to become stronger, more visible community leaders - demonstrating a higher self-esteem which translates into healthier families and vibrant citizenry”, says Rev. Laurie Ann Leach, the program’s producer. The beauty of “A Day to Remember” is the simple ease in presenting top leaders on teen issues. Issues like “The Power Inside You” presented by Wendi Klein Blum, Life Coach, Speaker, and author of 5 books. “The Art of Who You Are” by Rev. Laurie Ann Leach, and an inspiring young man, Caleb Sessions, a 16 year old teen himself who has overcome ADHD, now an author of “7 Days to Understanding your Teen” and entrepreneur / founder of www.CalebsWord.com, an advice site on bridging the communication gap between parents and their teens. Teens who choose to sell tickets in their schools, can fundraise for their own school clubs and teams, as “A Day to Remember” provides a $5.00 donation with each ticket sold. “In this way, our teens demonstrate their own zeal for sales and marketing while raising needed school funds, energizing their peers, and making the event their own”, shares Rev. Leach. Monies raised will also be presented to the non-profit organization, Youth Energy Possibilities (Y.E.P.) to help continue their educational leadership programs for women. It’s Time to Celebrate at Arts Garage!

H

appy 2nd Anniversary to Arts Garage! In this very short time span, Arts Garage has become one of South Florida’s most dynamic cultural venues: winning awards, critics’ praise, performers’ respect and most importantly the love and support of the community. This April, as we celebrate Arts Garage’s achievements, we take note of the incredible roster of performances scheduled, and realize what a treasure we have in our midst! “I am overwhelmed with all the amazing well-wishes we are receiving for our second anniversary,” said Alyona Ushe, Executive Director. “We started off with a dream and it has grown beyond our wildest imagination. Everyone here is so grateful to all of the supporters and performers who have made Arts Garage into the unique, exciting and integral part of the community that it has become.” To mark this momentous occasion, Arts Garage is hosting the Gala Gig II on April 20th, which will feature Little Jake Mitchell and the Soul Searchers. “We are so excited to have Little Jake and his band headline our Gala,” said Ushe. “The last time they were here they brought down the house. So we expect this to be an unbelievable party. We are also planning a lot of amazing surprise guests and performances. This will be a super-hot ticket, so get them now!” Another don’t miss special event will be the Texas Gypsies! “With the release of Café Du Swing, the Texas Gypsies have accomplished what few bands have even tried, let alone succeeded in doing in the past. The group blends elements of traditional small group Swing, Gypsy Jazz and Western Swing into a tightly woven fabric of 21st Century sophistication and jumpin’, thumpin’ entertainment,” says swingmusic.net. “We are thrilled to have the Texas Gypsies play at Arts Garage,” said Ushe. “And I am equally delighted to announce that saxophonist Ed Calle will be gracing our stage. He is a legendary performer who has played with musical greats such a Frank Sinatra, Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias, Michael Bolton, Rihanna and more.” And to complete the month, Arts Garage present the triple treat of world-renowned musicians: Dan Miller, Lew Del Gatto and Ben Wolfe. In addition to these musical standouts, April also brings us Theatre at Arts Garage’s latest production, Lungs by Duncan Macmillan. This humorous but thought-provoking play charts a couple’s contemplations about having a baby in a world of political and global unrest----you will be talking about this one for days! These are just a few of the great performances scheduled. For tickets and schedules, www.artsgarage.org or call 561-450-6357 Through April 14th, Wed-Fri 7:30 pm Saturday 2:00 PM, Sunday 7:00 pm

STUDIO PAINTERS IN THE GROVE

Lou Tyrrell, Artistic Director of The Theatre at Arts Garage, is delighted to announce this season’s third play, Lungs, by Duncan Macmillan which runs from March 15th through April 14th. Renowned for selecting works with provocative themes and thought-provoking issues, Tyrrell says of his latest choice, “Lungs is a feast. It is funny, wise, and in its simplicity, it is astonishing. It asks you to think about things that are really worth thinking about.” Lungs tells the story of a couple contemplating having a child in a world of global anxiety and political unrest. If they overthink it, they’ll never do it. But if they rush, it could be a disaster. What will be the first to destruct – the planet or the relationship? “Lungs is one of the most engaging, dynamic new scripts I’ve read in a long time,” he explained. “The main issue of the play, discussed by the couple over many years, is should they have a child, should they bring another human being into the world, is that the right thing to do today, given the dynamic of their relationship, who they are, and how they view what they see as a very unstable world. It’s a conversation that takes place over dozens of scenes, but there are no transitions between those scenes, so it’s kind of the story of a conversation, in that way….the conversation of a couple over the course of their lives.” Tyrrell continued, “It’s a play that everyone can relate to whether you are a teenager just starting to date, whether you’re a parent or planning to become a parent, or whether you are a grandparent thinking in terms of your life, your children and grandchildren. There are a lot of things that we don’t talk about, that we don’t discuss; issues that simmer under the surface of our lives. This is a very courageous play that’s not afraid to put those things, those subjects, out into the air for us to consider, to think about, relate to, and ultimately to discuss with each other.” Lungs is written by British playwright Duncan Macmillan, a talented young voice in the theater, typical of playwrights today who are trying to get back to the essence of the text in playwriting; simple and smart, straightforward storytelling. The UK Guardian says of Lungs, “Duncan Macmillan’s distinctive, off-kilter love story is

S

o you’ve used our advice from last month, met the right girl and now your getting married. Obviously you’ve come back to us for advice on getting ready for your big day. And with ‘I Do Delray’ coming up this month, I figured its time to talk about wedding day style (both for the groom and the guest). And don’t worry, even if you have no intentions on getting married, you can apply these techniques for any, and all black tie affairs. The Traditional Bancroft is always a fan of the traditional Tux. By “traditional” we don’t mean a black suit, we mean a 1 or 2 button jacket with satin lapels (sholl, notch or peak lapels are a matter of choice) and a satin strip down the pant leg. If there is no vest, a cummerbund is perfectly acceptable. Stay away from trends. You don’t want to look back on it when the trend has long since passed. Beware of rentals. Often times they tend to fit poorly, but if you do go rental make sure you try it on to make sure it fits right, before the big day. The jacket should hug the body and the sleeves should show some cuff when you reach to shake someone’s hands. Make sure the shirt has either studs (the little black buttons that go in the buttonholes) or a button cover built into the shirt. Wear a full collar, not a wing tip collar, and proper cuff link sleeves. The tuxedo is the one time that you can get away with wearing patent leather shoes (the shiny ones), so feel free to do so. Just don’t try to wear them with anything else. Remember you are not a wedding ornament, so tell your bride to leave the pastels for her bridesmaids, and not for your vest and tie. Besides, black and white goes with everything.

The Beach Wedding Living in the Village by the Sea, the beach wedding is popular because it is beautiful, and fairly easy to accomplish for couples with simpler tastes. Simple though it may be, there are still some rules you may want to follow. Just because you are getting married on the beach, it doesn’t mean you should get sloppy. Nice khaki Chinos and a fitted linen shirt with bare feet work great! A shirt with a pocket makes for a great spot for boutonniere pinning. Khaki suits or light grey are also a great choice, perhaps without a tie, but the shirt should still be pressed and the collar firm so that it sits up on the jacket. And no flip-flops, it may be casual, but you are making one of the biggest commitments you will ever make, you should still dress well. So you’ve been invited to the wedding? If it says “Black Tie” wear a tux. If it says “Black Tie Optional” wear a tux. We believe it’s always better to be overdressed then underdressed. Beach weddings are less formal occasions but you should still be clean, neat, and ready, should the need for an informal speech or chance meeting with destiny arrive. Lighter colored suits are appropriate for outdoor fare, but not for an evening dinner in the ballroom. And again, no matter what the invitation says, unless the bride is wearing a bikini, no flip-flops and board shorts. The Hair When you think of your hair think simple, tasteful, neat, and clean. The shave should be close and the aftershave cologne, subtle. Sounds easy, but its your wedding day and this haircut will literally last forever. Plan on getting your wedding day haircut one week before your wedding. If you are thinking of growing out your hair for a new look, give yourself three months (in most cases) to reach the desired length you and your stylist discussed during a

Get ready for another unforgettable Proper Affair BOCA RATON, FL – On May 2, 2013 Boston Proper and the Achievement Centers for Children & Families (ACCF) will unite once again to host the fifth annual Proper Affair Fashion Show in support of low-income children and families in our community. What began as a small luncheon has grown into a high-profile event that tops itself every year. Last April, a record-breaking $140,000 was raised and over 325 attendees joined the effort. In addition to surpassing the fundraising goal, the event itself has exploded into an elegant celebration featuring live entertainment, complimentary cocktails, a variety of hors d’oeuvres, whimsical photo booths, an extensive silent auction and highticket raffle prizes including a luxurious paradise vacation in the Florida Keys. Of course, the main attraction is the muchanticipated runway show featuring a sneak peak at the hottest new trends exclusively by Boston Proper and available for auction. ACCF’s CEO, Nancy K. haircut consultation. This is not a good time to change your look; you don’t want to surprise your bride on her wedding day. The day of, in preparation of your nuptials, relax, get a haircut clean up, and get a shave. Whether it’s a hot shave or a quick clipper electric razor shave, smooth skin, or a tapered beard are essential to complete your wedding day grooming. Make sure the blades in your razor are new and clean. For best results when doing a razor shave at home with soap or shaving lather, shave after a nice hot shower. The pores are open and the steam from the shower has softened the beard follicle, allowing a close comfortable shave with minimal to no irritation. If you are shaving with an electric razor, do just the opposite; shave before you take a shower. Providing your skin is clean and dry the electric clipper or razor can grab and clip the beard follicle. Any moisture on the skin will impede the process because the hair will absorb and lay flat. After the shave splash on some cold water, the colder the better. The cold snap will help to close the pores, limiting dust hair to clog the follicle. Apply aftershave liberally as an astringent to clean and heal the skin. Follow up with a light spritz or splash of cologne. A haircut and a shave and a trip down the aisle will be captured in time. Look good and feel confident. Next month we invite Ted Keer, our resident Minister of fine beer and spirits, to educate us on the difference between highland and lowland scotches, how to impress the boss at the cocktail party, and what drink you want to be ordering on that first date! Until then: “Know who you are, and who you want to become, and dress accordingly” Bancroft Services are a full service Men’s style consultant service, offering advice in all areas of dress, grooming and manners. “I Want A Boyfriend” Question

I want to stop hooking up and get into a real relationship. I have a crush on someone new and don’t want to ruin things. He’s hot, funny, nice, and seems to have a crush on me too. How long do I wait? I don’t want any more one-night stands or friends with benefits, I want a boyfriend.

An everyman comic, Kevin James is widely known for playing the amiable deliveryman Doug Heffernan on the CBS sitcom The King of Queens. Finding a second home onscreen in films expanded his persona into highly visible comedies including Hitch, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Here Comes the Boom. Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. Concert Hall Tickets start at $25

I lack judgment and self control so please don’t give me the usual ‘when it feels right’ advice because it can feel right really quickly for me, then turn out all wrong: the guy doesn’t call after or loses interest right away, or he doesn’t lose interest but I do. I’m sick of these patterns. I don’t know how to get into a relationship or stay in one and I think the sex too soon thing is one of the things holding me back. What do you think?

Answer

It’s not the ‘sex too soon’ thing that is holding you back. That can complicate matters, but it’s not the end-all-be-all of your relationship issues. It seems you have a tendency to treat yourself casually, and that can be wonderful, but you need to act how you want to be treated. If you are more serious about yourself, you will likely find a guy that is more serious about you. It’s not about waiting. You can ‘hook up’ first night and it can be the start of a long, fruitful relationship. It’s about having sex when it’s the right time for your purposes (besides the obvious, carnal ones). This doesn’t mean when you think it’s the right time, because you admittedly have a bad perspective of when that is, but when it is actually the right time. The adjectives that you use to describe your new crush are indicators of your problem. They are somewhat superficial connectors. People are supposed to be nice to one another and attractiveness shows nothing. You are going to be attracted to lots of people, most of whom are not right for you, so his being ‘hot’ is not a reason to date him, or date him seriously. The fact that you share a sense of humor is a positive development, because it is a deeper quality that evidences a connection beyond the superficial. If you want to start a relationship with someone, you should work towards identifying more of these types of qualities. What common personality traits and interests do you have? That should be your focus. Beyond him holding doors open for you and having a nice smile, what do you like to talk about? When you identify more real connections, you will develop more meaningful relationships, in both friendships and romantic endeavors. Don’t get discouraged. It’s tough to find someone that you are more meaningfully compatible with. You have to be patient and not force it. You have forced it in the past and done nothing to change your behavior and that’s why the pattern is repeating itself. And the next time ‘it feels right,’ don’t do it. Wait a couple of times. If he’s interested in something more, he’ll stick around. Send a nice question into andthenjackhappened@gmail.com I’ll wait forever for you.

April 10 – 8 p.m.

It happens every year at this time. Women across America want to lighten up . . . their hair that is! The beautiful rich dark browns and cool jet black colors of the long cold winter have had their day in the sun. Now that the flowers are blooming and colorful, lighter clothes are back in our closets, it is time for our hair to lighten up too. I know it can sound like a big commitment, every four weeks going to the salon and tweaking your highlights, but there are lots of alternatives. By adding just a few well placed foils, you can achieve the brighter look with much less maintenance and lower cost. Lighteners have come a long way. If you are concerned about the damage “bleach” can do to your strands, talk to your stylist about conditioning treatments to be used during, and after, your color service. An at-home conditioning treatment will help keep your newly glowing locks looking healthy, shiny and beautiful, long after you leave the salon. If you like that overall very blonde look, ask if a base softener is right for you. It is a relatively inexpensive process that slightly lightens your base color between highlight appointments. It saves time, money, maintains the integrity of your hair and, best of all, no more chasing your roots. It is done every 30

days and takes about 30 minutes start to finish. If you just can’t manage the idea of highlights, but want to brighten up, add a few lighter extensions. It is a great way to add sparkle to your hair, with no commitment to coloring. When done properly, no one but you and your stylist will know. Even if you have very dark hair you can still lighten up! No, not that black and white look we see walking the streets of Delray Beach. Lighten up with face framing highlights just a shade or two lighter. It will be a beautiful change that can easily be converted back to your original color once summer is over. If you are growing tired of the dark hues of winter, lighten up your tresses. You will feel a spring in your step and a twinkle in your eye when you look in the mirror and see the beautiful shades of spring in your hair. Dianne E. Crane’s BeachHouse hosts first Tiki Bar Battle of the Bottles Evening of tasty sips & samples set for April 12

The Unknown Diner visits Patio Delray The Food Beat.Com is Delray Beach’s very own online food network. The Food Beat produces entertaining and insightful programs that feature Delray Beach restaurants, coffee houses, bars, entertainment venues, caterers, events, and bakeries. The Food Beat is also building the most unique and powerful food and entertainment search engine, all in Hi Definition Video. It’s all food...all Delray Beach...all fun.

Editors Note: The Unknown Diner provides Food Beat viewers with the definitive approval of Delray Beach restaurants. Due to events that took place with an organized crime ring in Paris, France in 2011, he disguises his identity and refuses to speak. Despite his egocentricities and mysterious mannerisms, The Unknown Diner is revered for his discriminating pallet. When asked to write a review for a recent visit to Patio Delray, he declined, but allowed us (The Food Beat) to view his legal pad containing the notes he took during his dining experience. We have taken those notes, and added our interpretations to provide this review. Target Restaurant: Patio Delray 800 Palm Trail (Formerly Pineapple Grill) Delray Beach, FL 561-279-0880 Lunch & Dinner Seven Days a Week Unknown Diner: Atmosphere... Splendid dichotomy The Food Beat: Unknown is pleasantly surprised by the wondrous combination of elegant and casual. The dining room and bar area have a very upscale feel, yet remain intimate and cozy. The patio area, however, offers a lush and secluded retreat for those wishing to dine in shorts and flip flops. Or, for those wishing not to draw unnecessary attention to themselves. Unknown Diner: Staff... Respectful The Food Beat: As we all have come to know, Unknown appreciates his space and privacy, and the wait staff at Patio Delray provided both, as well as a keen knowledge of the ever changing menu. He appreciates being well attended, but not bothered... and the staff was cognoscente of his lofty demands. Unknown Diner: Service...Oldfangled The Food Beat: The service reminded

Unknown of his days in Paris. Operating like a well oiled machine, the staff worked in unison to ensure a most pleasurable dining experience.

Unknown Diner: Menu... Disparate The Food Beat: Does Unknowns thirst for adjectives exceed his lust for great food? Possibly, but on this trip to Patio Delray, his golden pallet was polished to a glimmering shine. For his entree, he was enamored with the spiced garam masala rubbed Ahi Tuna served with forbidden black rice, blistered grape Tomatoes, edamame curried mango chutney raita, and Asian pare slaw. The tuna was pan seared and then finished to perfection in the oven and served medium rare. From the texture, to the flavor, this dish was of the highest caliber, and one that Unknown consumed with great enthusiasm. Patio Delray prides themselves on pairing the perfect cocktail or wine with the meal, and the pear-ginger-tini was an excellent choice. On subsequent visits, Unknown has enjoyed the flame grilled double cut pork chop and the amazing ahi tuna tar tar appetizer. Unknown also appreciate the passion and creativity that goes into the menu and the new items that are consistently blended in with the house favorites. Unknown Diner: Bar... Exquisite The Food Beat: Unknown was very pleased with the bar and the vast wine selection. Unlike many bars, Patio Delray approaches each drink as if it might be your last...they stuff their own olives with fresh bleu cheese, make their own Bloody Mary mix, shake up signature martini’s, and craft custom created cocktails that dazzle. One customer was overheard raving about the UltimateSmoky-Tini. Unknown believes this is a very good place to consume adult beverages. Unknown Diner: Intangibles... Beaucoup The Food Beat: It all begins with Patio Delray’s proprietor, Miss Lilly. Deeply impassioned in the world of great food, her touch is on every dish and cocktail served. Mysterious, gracious, worldly, and easy on the eyes, Miss Lilly embodies Patio Delray’s mood. The patio is spectacular and the privacy is unparalleled in Delray. And not that it really matters to Unknown, but the parking is abundant and free. Unknown Diner: Bottom Line... Fork up. Way up. The Food Beat: The Unknown Diner highly recommends Patio Delray. DELRAY BEACH, FL – Cathy Balestriere, general manager of Crane’s BeachHouse Hotel & Tiki Bar, announced that the popular, Key West-style boutique hotel is hosting its first Tiki Bar Battle of the Bottles this month. The wine and food-filled event will be held on Friday, April 12, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the poolside Tiki Bar at Crane’s BeachHouse Hotel, located at 82 Gleason Street in Delray Beach. “Our first Tiki Bar Battle of the Bottles is perfect for young professionals, event planners and fun-loving oenophiles who want to sample 10 delicious wines from three different California-based vintners: Cupcake Vineyards, Layer Cake Wines and Cakebread Cellars,” said Balestriere. Cupcake wines are “fruit-forward, indulgent and approachable – wines meant to be enjoyed with an occasion.” Layer Cake wines are about “affordable luxury,” and Cakebread Cellers is widely recognized for its “quality, consistency and continuity.” “And because they all have ‘cake’ in their name, it is appropriate that we serve a variety of bakery treats for pairing purposes, along with other delicious munchables, such as antipasto selections and menu tastings from hot local restaurants such as the Bonefish Grill,” Balestriere added. Admission is only $20 per person (must be 21 or older). Each participant will receive a punch card that will cover one wine sample of each of the 10 wines, plus one bonus shot – 11 different wine samples for each person. All of the sample wines will be available for purchase by the glass at half-price during the Tiki Bar Battle of the Bottles at Crane’s BeachHouse Hotel. In addition, live music will be provided by the dynamic DYMiN. For info visit www.cranesbeachhouse.com. RSVPs for this event may be made by emailing info@cranesbeahhouse.com.

“3rd Annual Real Men Bake” annual event at the Sundy House

Gives guests an opportunity to sample sweet and savory baked goods lovingly made by “The Real Men” of Delray Beach! DELRAY BEACH, FL - “The 3rd Annual Real Men Bake” event will be held once again at the Sundy House, 106 S. Swinton Avenue in Delray Beach on Monday, April 22, from 6 – 8 pm. “Real Men Bake is” an all-you-can eat feast of baked goods, both sweet and savory, prepared by about thirty “bakers” – men who come from all walks of life and have volunteered to ‘bake for a cause’. Local celebrities, city leaders and businessmen participate and are welcome. One or two may be actual “chefs”, but most are just good cooks. The best bakers and winners will be awarded prizes by popular vote. Cost to attend is $20 in advance of event or $25 at the door, which allows guests to sample all the baked goods. In addition, the Sundy House Restaurant will offer complimentary light appetizers and selected specialty drinks at happy hour prices. The Atrium Bar will accept charge cards; however, the smaller supplemental bars located in various spots throughout the restaurant are cash only. Those who wish to purchase tickets in advance can call Joann Haros at 561-8436821 or e-mail gfwcdelray@yahoo.com. Proceeds from this event will benefit the charities and organizations supported by the Woman’s Club of Delray that include The Achievement Centers for Children and Families, The Delray Beach Public Library, The Caring Kitchen, Orchard View and Pine Grove Elementary Schools and awards College Scholarships to Delray Beach High School students. The GFWC Woman’s Club of Delray Beach was formed in 1902, founded the Delray Beach Public Library, meets once a month, and focuses on community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. APRIL

Although St. Patrick’s Day is behind us, I still love to enjoy a nice well balanced stout. Green Flash from San Diego, CA is newly distributed to South Florida. The Green Flash Double Stout, an Imperial Stout with 8.8% ABV, will definitely excite your palate. The black opaque beer has a dense tan head, is rich in dark chocolate and roasted coffee flavor, and a satin smooth texture. A stout for me is always my go to rainy day beer!

Some of the newest dishes, from Chef Omar and his expertly skilled staff, include The Office Ceviche, comprised of corvina in a mixture of fresh lemon and lime juice and yellow chillies, topped with sweet potato chips, and served on a bed of Bibb lettuce; crispy, Tempura-fried Sea Bass Tacos with whipped avocado; The Office Grilled Steak Bruschetta, served on toasted garlic ciabatta; the Togarashi Tuna Steak Sandwich (seared sushi grade tuna, enhanced with a finely ground mixture of spices, served with sliced avocado and pickled ginger) on a brioche bun;

General Manager David Panella adds, “These new menu items feature an infusion of flavors, with plenty of textural diversity, along with elements of Asian and Southwestern cuisine, that will tantalize the taste buds of

diners for lunch and dinner, daily.” Panella notes that they have also retained some of the outstanding dishes, on the menu, that have endeared the restaurant to legions of loyal diners, such as the Prime Office Cheese Burger; the Fancy Fried Green Tomatoes; the ceviche-style Tuna and Lobster Tacos, served in crispy shells; the Shu Mai Dumplings; the Veggie Burger; the Southern BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich; the Lemongrass-Glazed Sea Bass; and the Boneless Country-Fried Chicken. South Tech Academy students prepare pineapple recipes By Olivia Aponte South Tech Student (10th Grade) On March 3rd 2013 an event celebrating children took place at the Woman’s Club of Boynton Beach. The theme of the celebration was Pineapple! A few aspiring chefs from the culinary program at South Tech Academy, including me, were happy to volunteer in the kitchen assisting Chef Phil, Chef Bonnie and Chef Chrissy in creating exquisite and unique dishes. We helped prepare grilled pineapple with corn tortillas, grass fed hamburger sliders with caramelized onions and gorgonzola cheese, pineapple cupcakes with coconut cream icing, spaghetti squash with marinara sauce and a pineapple fruit salad with fresh lettuce, oranges, beets, scallions, apples and, of course pineapple, topped off with a sweet and savory raspberry dressing. It was an amazing opportunity to work hand in hand with professional and successful chefs, preparing fun dishes. It was also a delightful experience to serve all the guests eager to try these exciting dishes, working with fellow students, getting the job done, and having fun while doing it! Pineapple is an amazing fruit to work with, whether you’re making breakfast, entrees or desserts. Do not limit yourself to a basic fruit salad! Try something different such as a sweet pineapple fritter or a more complex and flavorful dish, such as chicken with grilled pineapple.

Welcome! From your Greater Delray Delray Medical Center recognized as one of nation’s top hospitals Beach Chamber of Commerce Awards and recognition for delivering high quality care are prevalent at Delray Medical Center, one of the major sponsors of the 51st Annual Delray Affair. Since the inception of the award seven years ago, the hospital is rated as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals by HealthGrades, an independent hospital-rating company. The 493-bed, acute care hospital also received a prestigious Level 1 Trauma Center designation from the State of Florida Department of Health last year. It is one of the few hospitals in Florida to hold the designation, and the only hospital in the state not associated with an academic institution to earn the highest rating available. And while earning a Level 1 designation signifies that Delray Medical Center’s emergency staff can manage any trauma case, the emergency room is also well prepared to handle even the most routine injuries. “Our level 1 trauma designation is a testament to the advanced care we are able to provide to our most critical patients, but we extend the same level of quality care to anyone seeking assistance in our emergency room, regardless of the severity of their injury or

Dear Friends, Welcome to the 51st annual Delray Affair, presented by YP and produced by the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce. A signature event for our city, the Delray Affair has become a tradition bringing together hundreds of volunteers to help showcase our vibrant community and our outstanding businesses. All of us at the Chamber are proud to play an important role in bringing more than 300,000 people to our town each year for the Delray Affair and to highlight Delray Beach as a great place to live, play and grow a business, too. We sincerely thank all of our sponsors and volunteers for helping to make this such a wonderful event—offered to the public with no admission fees. As you stroll down Atlantic Avenue and visit our side streets and vendor locations – including the green areas surrounding our Delray Beach Center for the Arts – you’ll see a wide variety of handcrafted fine arts and crafts presented by nearly 700 artists and artisans from around the country. As you browse the wares of our exhibitors, you discover wonderful pottery, jewelry, stained glass, and of course a variety of artwork from water colors and oils to acrylics and photography. Food is a big part of the Delray Affair and you’ll certainly want to visit our food court areas where you’ll find everything from traditional fare to local favorites including conch fritters, sweet potato pie and farm-fresh roasted corn. While you’re here, we hope you’ll take a few minutes to visit some of our local merchants – on the Avenue – and

off the Avenue in surrounding areas – who help to make Delray Beach the charming town that it is. On behalf of the more than 800 businesses that make up the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce, we want to thank you for visiting the “Most Fun Small Town in America” and our beloved Delray Affair – the most fun arts and crafts festival under the sun! Warmly, Karen Granger, Interim President and Francisco Perez-Azua, Chairman of the Board

illness,” says Jennifer Chiusano, the hospital’s chief nursing officer. “We can handle anything and everything – and we do.” Whether patients are visiting the emergency room or at the hospital for treatment of cardiac, orthopaedic, stroke or other issues, they can be sure they’re receiving the highest quality of care. In addition, Delray Medical Center also opened a new valve clinic, which is helping patients with heart murmurs and other valve related issues. “Our focus is to make sure we do the right thing for every patient every time,” Chiusano said. In addition to receiving the Level 1 Trauma Center designation, Delray Medical Center continues to receive awards for its cardiac care. HealthGrades also recently rated the hospital as one of the top 10 hospitals in the state for cardiac services. HealthGrades has also recognized the hospital in other areas as well, with Excellence Awards in orthopaedic surgery, joint replacement and for being number 1 in Florida for treatment of stroke. “Our accolades are a testament to the quality of the care we provide to our patients,” Chiusano said.

Welcome to the 51st Annual Delray Affair

O

ne of South Florida’s most popular street festivals – drawing more than 300,000 residents and visitors each year – the Delray Affair is also a tradition spanning more than five decades that has helped define Delray Beach as a great place to live, work and play.

Each year there is something new at the Delray Affair, and this year visitors will notice “The Big Easel,” live mural art on the front lawn of the Delray Beach Center for the Arts, created by world-famous artists who will be working together on the project.

Commemorative Poster Artist Ora Sorensen I love the charm, the beach, the downtown and the people. For 20 years Delray has given me platform to show my art to visitors from all over the world. When I had an art gallery at the corner of Atlantic and Federal I had exposure that made my career as an artist larger than it would have been if I was located elsewhere. Thanks Delray!!! I chose to paint a view of The Crest Theater this year, as this is the year The Crest Theater, as part of Old School Square became our own Delray Beach Center for the Arts. My finished piece will be an oil painting, appr. 24” x 30”, and will be suitable for reproduction as the lines will be crisp, clear and colorful. www.orasorensenart.com

Commemorative Pin & T-Shirt Artist Martha Quigley

Now in its 51st year, the 2013 Delray Affair is bigger and better than ever, stretching for more than a mile through the city’s vibrant downtown and showcasing the works of 750 artists and crafters from across the nation. Add to that outstanding live music at the beer and wine gardens and amazing food – from sweet potato pie and conch fritters to roasted corn picked yesterday – and it’s easy to understand why the Delray Affair is known as the largest award-winning arts and craft show of its kind in the Southeastern United States.

Produced by the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce, the Delray Affair traces its roots back to the 1940s and ‘50s and the annual Delray Beach Gladiola Festival, a community-wide event, that attracted tourists as well as local residents who participated in everything from the annual Gladiola parade to the Miss Gladiola beauty pageant. Today, the community spirit that sparked the first Delray Affair lives on in an arts and crafts festival like no other under the sun.

Martha Quigley loves Delray Beach. She’s been a painter, ocean lover and sailor for most of her life and feels blessed to be able to combine her great l o v e s on canvas and paper. Whether working in oils with their unmatched luminosity or with the immediacy and transparency of watercolor, she tries to convey the colors of the ocean, the colorful confusion of a leeward mark rounding or the simple beauty of marine life. Since working in Delray Beach, her paintings have blossomed with sun-drenched color and she finds never-ending inspiration in this picturesque seaside locale.
