hen the crowds gather on Atlantic Avenue this month for the annual Delray Affair, they’ll be helping to celebrate a very special golden anniversary. It’s been 50 years since the Delray Affair was launched by a group of community leaders hoping to revive the beauty and excitement of the city’s Gladioli Festival. "It was an exposition that attracted flower buyers from all over the country," said Roy Simon, a Delray Beach native and former Chamber of Commerce member that has been a volunteer since it was the Gladioli Festival. He helped the festival evolve into what it is today. Due to development and a transition from flower farming to vegetable farming, The Delray Gladioli Festival died out and transitioned into the small Agricultural Expo. Simon envisioned more for the Expo and was inspired to add art by the Winter Park Art Festival. Wanting to improve upon the festival and increase profit for the community, Simon helped gather local community leaders for an organizational meeting. It was at this first meeting in 1962 that the committee

and their chair, John Bordeman, chose "The Delray Affair" as the name of the festival that would now include arts and crafts in addition to agricultural goods. The affair was developed to extend the snowbird season by one week so that city merchants could make some more money during the slow season. Since then, the Delray Affair has blossomed into the most popular arts and crafts festival in Palm Beach County, growing from 24 exhibitors in 1962 to more than 700 exhibitors and 300,000 attendees today. It is held on the weekend after Easter in order to extend the tourist season and create an incentive for seasonal residents to stay a little longer. Admission is free. The festival is held on Atlantic Avenue, which becomes one big pedestrian mall, from the Delray Beach Tennis Center west of Swinton Avenue east to the Intracoastal waterway. Here are the details: DATES/TIMES Friday, April 13, 2012 (10 am - 6 pm) Saturday, April 14, 2012 (10 am - 6 pm) Sunday, April 15, 2012 (10 am - 5 pm) For more details on entertainment, parking, tickets and a special tribute please see page 15.

Earth Day Gala Set at Sandoway House Delray Beach, FL – The Sandoway House Nature Center, Delray Beach’s only nature center, is once again hosting its annual gala – but with a change in theme for the first time in 10 years to “The Earth Day Gala.” The gala is set for Saturday, April 14 at The Ocean Club in Ocean Ridge. “We moved the gala to April to celebrate Earth Day, which more closely matches the Center’s mission of preserving and educating our community on the coastal habitat,” said Carolyn Patton, gala co-chair. “We will continue all of our traditional favorites such as the New England lobster bake, extravagant silent auction and of course our trademark ‘Dancing with the Sandoway Stars’ competition while putting more focus on nature preservation.” The gala will also feature live music by The Valerie Tyson Band and lots of dancing under the stars, outside oceanside.

The gala is co-chaired by Terri Neil and Carolyn Patton and is presented by The Friends of the Sandoway House. All proceeds benefit the Sandoway House Nature Center. “The Adventures of Bella & Harry” Local author Lisa Manzione introduces children to the joys of travel and discovery by Amber Clark Special to The Pineapple

F

irst time children’s book author Lisa Manzione, of the globally-focused series The Adventures of Bella and Harry believes if children are going to succeed in a globalized economy, they need to appreciate and recognize the cultures and nations outside of the United States. In March of 2011, a Senator from Missouri introduced a new bill that would fund a fouryear, $60 million program to enhance the teaching of geography in public schools. Manzione, a local Delray Beach resident, could

dren’s friends, now in college, were unable to identify France on a map. Over the next few years, Manzione and her friends embarked on various journeys across the world, where she gathered dozens of experiences in cities like Venice, Paris, London, Cairo, Athens, and Barcelona that she would one day share in her series. The colorful illustrations by Kristine Lucco, another Delray Beach local, bring to life historical monuments like Paris’ Eiffel Tower, Big Ben in London, the pyramids of Egypt, and Italy’s Rialto Bridge. Matched with the witty dialogue between Bella and Harry, the series truly creates an enjoyable tool to teach young children that there is so much more to learn and discover in our world. Both Let’s Visit Paris! and Let’s Visit Venice! have been awarded the Mom’s Choice Award, honoring excellence in family-friendly media.

not agree more with the bill’s introduction to Congress and soon became the running force behind her children’s book series. The Adventures of Bella and Harry, which debuted in February 2011, chronicles the humorous adventures of a young and spunky chihuahua Bella and her little brother, Harry, as they travel with their human owners to exotic locales around the world. By introducing children to foreign customs, history, landmarks, and languages at an early age, the series stimulates children's imaginations and fosters a thirst for understanding the world in which they live. The Adventures of Bella & Harry series not only entertains with highly relatable characters and heartwarming hand-drawn illustrations, but does so in a way that raises awareness for children and their parents alike. Both Let’s Visit Paris! and Let’s Visit Venice! have been awarded the Mom’s Choice Award, honoring excellence in family-friendly media. “After realizing that many children cannot locate major countries on a map, it became my mission to combine my passion for world travel and love of animals to create The Adventures of Bella & Harry,” says author Manzione. “If our children are going to thrive in a global economy, we need to teach them that there are places in the world beyond their backyards worth knowing about. The Adventures of Bella & Harry is an informative, interactive and exciting way to introduce children to the joys of travel and ultimately create more knowledgeable citizens of the world.” Manzione became inspired to write her books after what would be the first of many overseas trips with her close-knit group of girlfriends. She returned home from the French Open and was shocked to learn that her chil-

The award-winning series will be taking the stage in the fall with Let’s Visit London! debuting at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Delray Beach launches online public forum

The City of Delray Beach announced that "Open City Hall Citizen Forum", an online forum that promotes public comment and civic engagement, is now available on its website, www.mydelraybeach.com. This innovative approach to local government enables residents to provide input and share ideas on Cityrelated issues. "Open City Hall Citizen Forum" is easy and convenient to use and enables City officials to hear the voices of those who are unable and/or unwilling to speak publicly at City Commission meetings. Statements will be read by City officials and may be incorporated into the City's decision-making process. With this new communication option, instead of attending a City Commission meeting to comment on an issue, residents can now read what many are saying online and add their own statements from the safety and privacy of their homes. "Given our significant budget constraints, we were looking for a cost effective way to allow citizens to learn about and provide input on City issues," said Mayor Woodie McDuffie. "This low cost communication tool is an inexpensive way to enable all residents to voice their comments and/or suggestions. We believe it will result in a more responsive, accountable, inclusive and customer focused local government." The first Open City Hall topic in Delray Beach asks the question: "What infrastructure improvements are needed around the City?" To become a member of "Open City Hall Citizen Forum" and provide comment on this topic and/or other topics posted in the future, go to www.mydelraybeach.com and select Open City Hall Citizen Forum on the City's home page. For more information, contact the City of Delray Beach Public Information Office at (561) 243-7190 or E-mail pio@mydelraybeach.com.

Pineapple Profile: MAKIIN

he isn’t what you would picture when you think of hip-hop, and that’s just how she likes it. It’s way too late on a Wednesday night at a popular coffee spot on East Atlantic Ave. It’s open-mic night and artistic types are here in force. It seems like the perfect place to be meeting a musician to talk shop, but then the crowd goes quiet, all heads turn and the last thing on their mind is art. Makiin is 5’7” but 6 inches of that are heels. She’s dainty but strong and doesn’t bring to mind an artist on sight much less a rapper. She can rap, though, and she is serious about it. I realize that I don’t know any white female artists in that genre so I ask the obvious question: “Is it difficult being a minority in the rap industry?” “It is,” she replies, “but it’s good for me. I don’t get the luxury of people taking me at my word. When I tell someone that I rap, they immediately make me work for the respect. I think I rap more in the streets then I do on the stage, and I perform a lot of shows!” I am checking out her most recent video entitled ‘XOXO” featuring a Korean soul singer named SOMong. The video quality is as good if not better then what’s on MTV (when they play videos), and if you listened to the song without knowing who it was, you would swear you were listening to a pop mix of Nicki Minaj and Missy Elliot from a top 40’s station. She is perplexing, though. Each song and video and every new rung up the ladder seems to explain why everyone loves this girl so much. Halfway through our two-hour chat in the coffee shop, I started scratching my head. Her recording persona is very much what you would expect of a woman in a male-dominated industry—a sexy bravado largely dominated by girl power lyrics—but the more we talk, the more I see the other side of Makiin, the side that would do anything for friends and strangers alike. She puts on a charity concert every year for the “I Care” foundation. The concert is going to

A P R I L 2012

be in May and there will be 10 Florida MC’s to perform for it. It’s $10 at the door and every penny goes to the charity. “I was raised by parents who did anything that they could for everybody that they could, and I am one of four children but because my parents would take in kids off of the street who needed help, I have about eight siblings who I love and cherish to this day.” Makiin worked in a woman’s treatment program when she started rapping, so she has a unique view on rehab, a topic that is a hot button in Delray Beach. She tells it to me straight: “What if it’s you or your child that gets in a car accident and inadvertently gets addicted to pain medication? I understand the uproar, but we need to temper the argument with patience and a love for neighbor.” Makiin isn’t all roses though. She’s also an incessant and goal-oriented woman and talking is rarely the goal, unless she is on the Internet, where the Makiin brand is flourishing nicely. Over 5,000 people subscribe to the Makiin brand between Twitter and Facebook and that number grows daily. Forty-thousand people visit her website monthly, and she has over 50,000 combined views on her YouTube channel. For all intents and purposes, at 25 years old she’s on her way to mogul status. “I have hit every bump in the road on the way to where I am,” she confesses. “Everyone has an opinion, some are good and some aren’t, but I don’t care about the negative ones enough to stop.” I ask her how she describes her music and she tells me that it’s fresh, sexy, feel good music. That makes total sense now because that description pretty much describes Makiin to a T. You can find Makiin everywhere! www.Makiin.com Follow on twitter @MakiinMelodiiez facebook.com/Makiin youtube.com/MakiinMelodiiez soundcloud.com/MakiinMelodiiez

At 9 pm Saturday evening, Rappers Delight Part II will take the stage to deliver the performance that will nullify the series term Underground. The premier performance of Urban Underground: Rapper’s Delight on Saturday, February 4, 2012 saw an audience ranging in age, race and background, from West Palm Beach to Miami. The second round is expected to further cross cultures and create an event remembered for its multidisciplinary appeal. As South Florida’s best MCs, including Eric Biddines, Substance, Pangea Kidz, Ian Caven from 45 Live, NeoPopSicle, Makiin, and Crucial, take the stage to deliver an unforgettable experience April 7, they will be accompanied by the seven-piece Arts Garage Band, lead by Drew Tucker. “The main motive behind the existence of Urban Underground is to cross classes, so to speak, and present a diverse audience with music that knows no cultural bounds,” explains Drew Tucker, Education & Outreach Coordinator at Arts Garage. “The City of Delray Beach has been trying to bring together the various backgrounds within Delray Beach for years and we finally have a means to do this, with music. Pairing hip hop with a seven-piece instrumental section, putting the performance on the stage of the multi-disciplinary venue of Arts Garage and promoting this event across schools, companies and other organizations from the east to west side of the city will result in the com-

ing together of a people for a unified reason – to hear what Urban Underground has to say.” The community has really opened its arms to this series. The law offices of Frankel & Cohen have sponsored the series and have already seen the effects it has on the culture of Delray Beach “I am proud to support this series,” says attorney Lee Cohen, “this community as a whole is very important to us and I know that it will open the eyes and hearts of many.” Urban Underground: Rappers Delight Part II will host seven artists on the Arts Garage stage. Each will perform original songs from their latest albums, as well as covers and interpretations of music by Outkast, KRS1, Snoop Dogg, MC Hammer, Fugees, Tupac, and Notorious BIG, among others. he cold spells have lifted and the rainy season is teetering on the verge of downpour. It’s time to get outside your home and soak up some sun, soft breezes and arts and entertainment. Do it now, before the rain keeps you indoors, watching Law and Order reruns and wondering what’s being delivered for dinner. See Something An Afternoon with Stephen Bogart will take place Thursday, April 5 at the Crest Theatre of Old School Square. The son of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall will share stories and insights learned through his upbringing. The audience will also be presented with rarely seen home movies from Bogart’s collection.

As South Florida’s only non-profit Irish community theatre group, the Irish Theatre of Florida has been a vital part of traditions rich in Irish culture for the past 18 years. Their mission is to promote Irish heritage through the arts, to produce Irish drama in South Florida and provide a forum for the Irish Diaspora, Irish American artists and educators by connecting people of Irish heritage to the theatre. Their upcoming play, “The Country Boy,” at the Crest Theatre (see www.itofl.com) is an intimate portrait of the cost of country life versus city living and examines the whole problem of emigration to America. Full of comedy and humorous genius, beneath the laughs lies the harsh and sad reality of the bitterness, and regrets that emigration has inflicted upon Irish society over the years.

In loving memory of Bonnie Brow

Local woman helped grow the Delray Affair Bonnie Brow, one of the most influential figures in the success of the Delray Affair, is unable to achieve her goal of celebrating the event’s 50-year anniversary in person. She passed away in November 2011, leaving behind quite a legacy. The general chairwoman of the Delray Affair for 18 years, Bonnie took great pride in being able to grow the festival and still help maintain its quality. She took a personal interest in the vendors and the volunteers. Friends say Bonnie had three passions in her life: her family, life itself and the Delray Affair. Organizers say Bonnie will be there in spirit this year and her impact will be seen in the success of the show and the dedication of the dozens of volunteers and vendors whose lives she touched. Many will never forget seeing Bonnie Brow wearing a pink shirt and weaving through the crowds on Atlantic Avenue in a golf cart the weekend after Easter each year. She was with us on the golf cart at last year's Delray Affair, taking notes and looking for ways to enhance an event that had her fingerprints all over it. Even though she was getting ill, being involved in the event again was one of the bright spots in her life. Those who knew Bonnie—those who shared happy and fond memories of the Delray Affair with her—will surely miss her at this year's celebration. But chances are they'll smile when they see how far the show has come, and know that Bonnie was instrumental in making that happen.

The Search for The Perfect Night Out: PART IV

D

rew and The Woo is a regular Pineapple series that follows two young professionals as they look for the perfect night out in Delray Beach. They'll need a happy hour, a sub-20-buck dinner, some live music and a late-night hot spot. Call it a scavenger hunt, bar crawl or even a mild bender. Either way - you're going to want to follow in their footsteps. At the end of the year, Drew and The Woo will select their top choice for each category and invite the whole city to come out and join them for "The Best Night Out In Downtown Delray."

HAPPY HOUR Cut 432 Cut 432’s version of H a p p y Hour…”Social Hour” is indeed social. Who knew? Well, clearly the gaggle of good-looking folks that’s there every night. A variety of premium beverages, glasses of good vino and top shelf appetizers under $5. Add a dash of fresh decor, modern hipness with an old-school flare and this Social Hour is top-notch. Drew: I love this place. I feel like Don Draper from Mad Men. Ryan: And all this time we didn’t believe Cut could… cut it. Drew: We let their swanky reputation, and our well-known bias for a good-old fashioned happy hours, cloud our judgment. Ryan: Shame on us! And shame on all of our friends for not telling us about these delicious, little biscuits.

Drew: Who would have thought We would be sitting in one of Delray’s most reputable restaurants enjoying tall glasses of cold beer and biscuits that taste heaven sent. What a combo. Ryan: And we’re not stopping there. Cut 432’s “Social Hour” menu reads like a who’s who of the greatest dishes and drinks ever concocted by man. Mini Burgers, Truffle Mac, and maybe the best Ceviche in town fill our table and our bellies. Drew: Paired with craft beers the likes of Trois Pistoles and Magic Hat #9 equals sheer bliss. Not to mention one or two “classic cocktails.” Ryan: It’s no wonder they call it “Social Hour.” The bar area is totally buzzing. Drew: It may be the happiest group of people I have ever seen. Ryan: Can you blame them for smiling? I think our stubborn-selves stumbled across the best happy hour in town – and maybe the best bartenders too. Cheers to that. Drew: No… Cheers to Cut 432 and their endearingly swanky restaurant. Ryan: Well said. DINNER FOR UNDER $20 Crane’s Beach House and The Premiere Pan American Art Auction Crane’s Beach House is known for their quaint hotel suites, tiki bars and island inspired pool areas. They know how to throw a party! It may be one of the few hotels that are frequented by the locals. Everyone loves Crane’s! Drew: So… I don’t get it. Why are we at Crane’s? Don’t get me wrong, I love this place, but they don’t serve food under $20. In fact, I don’t think they serve food at all. Ryan: Ahh, true. But my friend Drew, do you know what’s better than dinner for under $20 downtown? Drew: Dinner for under $10. Ryan: Well – yeah, but how about dinner for free? How does that sound? Drew: Sounds like I should have worn my running shoes. Ryan: No, dude, it’s legal. And fairly simple. Before heading out tonight, I checked the events calendar on GoDelray.com and found Ford Fine Art’s Premiere Pan American Art Auction Preview. Drew: Continue… Ryan: Well, on top of featuring fine South American Art, hand rolled cigars, and live music... they also are featuring complimentary appetizers. Drew: So now we’re crashing art auctions? Ryan: Crashing, strategically attending. Whatever, we love art. Drew: Hey, I’m fine with it and I’m glad we came. The empanadas and mango mojitos are rocking and the crowd is incredibly interesting. I think I might kickoff my shoes and stay awhile. Ryan: Unfortunately, we don’t have time. The Downtowner (Delray Beach’s latest and greatest addition) is picking us up any minute so shove a few more empanadas in your beak and let’s roll. Drew: Love The Downtowner, you just can’t beat a startup consisting of a few young entrepreneurs, three (soon to be four) electric golf carts, and a service that transports Delray folks anywhere downtown for tips only. Genius. Ryan: You’re right. They just jumped to number six on my phone’s “favorites” list. Sorry Grandma. LIVE MUSIC Bull Bar The first live music venue everyone sees, or better yet hears, when they enter the heart of Atlantic Ave. Bull Bar is known for two things: great live

music and strong drinks. Be ready for crowds of people singing, dancing and, of course, drinking.

Drew: Oh, how I love a real live music bar with a great cover band. Ryan: Doesn’t almost every bar have a great cover band on Friday nights? Drew: My simple, simple friend. Cover bands are a dime a dozen, and so are the venues that host them. But cover bands that know what they play, rather than play what they know are a rare breed. And perhaps even more unique, the venues that choose to put the music first. Tonight Bull Bar is featuring The 3 Amigos – a local band worth hunting down. Ryan: Awesome. So when are they going to play some Journey? Drew: They’re not. Ryan: A little Rush perhaps? Drew: Nope. The 3 Amigos are all about the 90’s (and occasionally the 80’s). They know how to read the crowd and play accordingly. Be ready for some Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime and the occasional gangsta rap remix. Ryan: Well I just ran into the owner of Lanzetta’s, the crazy cool new barber shop in Pineapple Grove, and he said The 3 Amigos are the best cover band in town. Drew: I just told you that. Ryan: Yeah, but this guy knows what he’s talking about. He’s like, the raddest dude in this bar. Have you seen his hair? Drew: You do recall that I am a professional musician, owner of a music academy and manage up-and-coming musician’s right? Ryan: Yeah… but have you seen this dude’s hair? Drew: Bottom line. Bull Bar might be the best live band bar in town. Not because of its awesome location. Not because of its intimate vibe; but because they know a great band when they hear one. So I guess I’ll live without Journey tonight. LATE NIGHT SPOT Sail Inn Located on the of outskirts downtown, this late night bar is well worth the trip. The bartenders are friendly, the atmosphere is legit and the owner is, and will always be, a regular. Open for almost 50 years, the Sail Inn is Delray Beach’s oldest bar. Ryan: You know how I knew this was one of the best late night spots in town? Drew: How? Ryan: Because three bar owner’s from previous Drew and The Woo Nights Out recommended it. Drew: You know how I knew? One of our followers joined us tonight to tell us how he and his father both had their first drink at Sail Inn when they turned 21. Ryan: It’s also interesting to note that Sail Inn’s online ratings show five stars everywhere you look. People just love this bar. Drew: And they’re not afraid to talk about it. Several regulars seriously couldn’t stop telling us about their relationship with this bar. And though some of the stories were a little foggy, they were all totally genuine. Ryan: What would a real-deal Holyfield local bar be without a dedicated owner? Owner Rick Janke heard we were coming in and told us to text him when we’re on our way. I said “Well, it’ll be like 12-1am.” To which he replied “I own a bar, I’ll be up.” Drew: Not only was he there, but he greeted us when we arrived, told us all about the bar, its history and introduced us to his staff. Ryan: Someone once told me that a bar is only as good as its owner. Drew: Who told you that? Ryan: I think it was Rick. Drew: Well… he just may be right about that. Taxi. Bed. Sleep. Large coffee in the a.m. Want us to consider your favorite local hangout? Email us at info@drewandthewoo.com.

ENJOYING A BIT OF BREAKFAST IN DELRAY

H

ere is a look into two of Delray’s breakfast eateries, Crepes by the Sea and Spot Coffee. At these two restaurants, the food speaks for itself. Though for those of you who have yet to go, I must do something to get you there and hopefully this article does the trick.

Under the little red awning just off of Atlantic Avenue, you will find Crepes by the Sea. A quaint little eatery, C by the Sea, as I like to call it, is sure to fit any craving. While staring at the menu, one must ponder the question, savory or sweet? That's usually my dilemma, though savory wins most every time for me. Don’t get me wrong, the sweet crepes are a must-try, but the one I absolutely crave the most is the Cousteau Crepe. I don’t even bother looking at the menu any more now that I know what the best crepe on the menu is. Folded in half, drizzled with creme fraiche, sliced green onions, capers, smoked salmon and squeezed lemon juice, the

W W W. D E L R A Y P I N E A P P L E . C O M

Cousteau is too good to be true and needs nothing more than to be eaten. Once folded and plated, this super-savory crepe gets freshly grated lemon zest and one last drizzle of creme fraiche. Regardless of the choice you make, these crepes are incredible. I mean, how can something be so flat and so fluffy at the same time? They are the perfect palette for any ingredient. Demar was so gracious, he made our crepes right in front of us. This process is beyond me, having tried a dozen times to make these super-thin pancakes. They always stick to the pan, break apart and end up in the garbage. C'est la vie. So when you find yourself craving something different for a change, stop in at Crepes by the Sea—they are perfect every time. The coffees are great too. I don’t know the house secret... but for some reason the cappuccino here has to be the best I've had on the Ave. And trust me, getting this girl to stray from my usual iced Americano is a difficult thing to accomplish. On the other end of Atlantic Avenue is a recent, warmly welcomed addition to our ever expanding neighborhood . . . Spot Coffee. I am sure you have seen this corner coffee shop walking or driving Atlantic Avenue, and it’s possible you already love Spot Coffee as much as I do. Of course they have amazing coffee, but the best part about Spot is their full-fledged kitchen, where the real magic happens. Not only do they make great sandwiches for lunch, they also masquerade as a pizza joint. But I'm not here to talk about Spot Coffee's pizza, even though it is well worth talking about. I am here to talk Morning Grub. Spot serves a great breakfast. When you are in the mood for something sweet, order a waffle! They are divine. If you're a purist, go the classic route with butter and syrup. And if you’re feeling decadent, order the Belgian Delight with fruit, whipped cream and caramel or chocolate. I am never in the mood that early in the morning, but I usually do find myself in the mood for an omelet.

by ChristalynWARNER I know, I know, a Delray Beach coffee shop that makes omelets?! It’s true. These things are massive. Splitting one is the way to go, unless you are a man or just have the appetite of one, then go for it! I get mine filled with Pepper Jack cheese

for a little kick, sliced tomatoes, and spinach. They use big, thick-cut tomatoes, which make the omelet succulent and bursting at the seams. Accompanying this gorgeous spinach and tomato omelet, is your choice of bagel, English muffin or whole wheat focaccia. At this point there is only one choice, and for me that's definitely the focaccia. You better make sure it's toasted and buttered. With hints of salt and rosemary, you will be pleased with this super-delicious selection. They always add a fresh slice of fruit to balance the breakfast. So not only do I love the omelets, Spot Coffee is the place I go to get the best iced Americano in Delray Beach. I am a sucker for big robust coffee and that's what you get at Spot. Another choice drink to order is their iced coconut latte. It is subtle, sweet, surprising and perfect for summer. Breakfast in this “All-American town” just keeps getting better! Over two thousand years ago, Plato pointed out that "the part can never be well unless the Whole is well," and Western health care practitioners have been rediscovering that fact ever since. Our health colors our entire life. Our activities, both at work and play, every relationship, the amounts and kinds of food we eat, our emotional state and even our personalities impact how well we feel. When you’ve had a headache, you took it with you everywhere. It became of the center of your whole life. If you felt sad or a part of you was ailing, all of you suffered. When you felt wonderful, your exuberance and joy were reflected in your experience of life. Health is the tapestry through which all the threads of our lives are intimately woven. Pull one loose and you risk unraveling or weakening the whole. One of the fundamental influences on how we experience life is stress. We “see” it everywhere, but it’s not really “out there.” Stress is the internal response we experience to external changes and challenges, whether real or imagined -- a deadline at work, an upcoming dinner with the in-laws, relationship issues or just our imagination running wild. We experience stress when we lose faith in our ability to cope, whether with the world in general or with specific people and situations. At some point in a busy day this feeling of helplessness can strike any of us and we feel "stressed out." Our stress response is a signal that our body and all its major systems have been activated. This classic fight-or-flight reaction is not just in our heads. lt‘s an automatic response that reverberates throughout our entire body. Adrenaline is released, our

heart rate quickens, breathing becomes shallower, blood vessels on the skin surface contract, blood pressure rises, digestion and intestinal processes shut down, muscles tense up, the stomach tightens. None of these conditions are meant to persist for very long. The body couldn’t stand it. They are short-term responses to immediate dangers. Yet we live in a society that is constantly presenting us with stressful situations. Some are very specific, such as traffic jams, and some are rather vague, generalized feelings of being at the mercy of other individuals and forces beyond our control. Unless we take conscious action, our stress response stays permanently turned on, even at low levels. Such extreme mobilization can only be maintained for so long before our minds and bodies show signs of exhaustion. Over a period of time, adrenal stimulation with no discharge of energy will deplete vitamins and minerals from the system, including those essential to the functioning of the immune system like vitamins B and C. Elevated adrenal activity can also cause a buildup of fatty substances on blood vessel walls, and damage the functioning of the digestive system. The antidote to the state of alert generated by the stress response is relaxation. Only a relaxed and balanced mind and body can thrive. The healing power of nature operates at its best only when the body allows it, through rest, relaxation, and the gentle, natural flow of energy. The remarkable thing about knowing how to relax is that you have more control over your life. You gain tremendous confidence with the knowledge that you can cope with stress and stressful situations. Instead of

reacting, you find yourself responding to people and situations from a place of calm and centeredness. Things that used to bother you lose their power. Reflexology is a non-invasive, natural method for activating the healing powers of the mind and body through profound relaxation. Reflexology provides a faithful, ongoing source of inner strength and well being. Reflexology is a both a method for helping you feel better now, and for enhancing your everyday life by keeping you at the peak of your energies and creativity. Used as a preventative measure for maintaining a well-balanced mind and body, reflexology can help you ward off illness and fatigue and maintain an optimal state of health and well-being. Whatever you do, you’ll do it with more enthusiasm, joy, focus and energy. The true nature of stress is that it starts within each of us. And since it does, we can do something about it. Choose to start taking back control of your life right now. Make reflexology a part of your action plan. Experience a natural, powerful way to enhance the quality of your relationships, your health and your life. Laura Norman, M.S., LMT, is a Holistic Reflexologist and Life Wellness Coach and author of the best-selling book, Feet First: A Guide to Foot Reflexology. TIME TO REV UP THAT MOTIVATION . . . HERE’S HOW For most of us, our New Year’s resolutions seem to be only distant memories now. To make matters worse, the cooler winter months have taken a toll on our waistlines! If saying goodbye to winter’s warmer layers helped you discover an extra inch or two (or three), no worries. It happens to the best of us. With summer only around the corner, I am here to offer you the tips and tools you need to not only shed those few winter pounds, but also to get excited and super-confident about showing off your physique around Delray this summer. "Whoever wants to reach a distant goal must take small steps." - Helmut Schmidt No need to feel overwhelmed or discouraged when it comes to initiating your weight loss goals. You are not alone and I am here to support and motivate you, put the kibosh on those excuses, and walk you through the steps to being successful. First of all, you must dedicate yourself to improving the way you look and feel. One of the most effective ways of doing so is the technique of visual inspiration. Post motivational quotes and pictures around your home or workplace to keep you focused, and picture in your mind exactly how you want to look and feel. Another great way to utilize this technique is to treat yourself to a striking new swimsuit that you are eager to reveal on the sandy beaches of Delray! Whether it is a traditional yet trendy one-piece, a tankini for the more daring, or a bikini for the really audacious ladies, choose a style that will really show off your dedication to getting in shape. Be realistic while shopping for your swimsuit, but most importantly, choose one that screams “motivation” to keep you focused on your goal every time you pass by it in your home. For you men, trust me, this technique works for you, too. Don’t find yourself looking for excuses to avoid the beach and social gatherings this summer. Get inspired to reach your fitness goals! Since we all live in the trendiest city

around, we don’t have to look any further than Atlantic Avenue itself to find our new swimsuits. I have narrowed it down to several boutiques that offer an excellent variety of suits for all tastes and budgets. The Earth Collection, located at 517 East Atlantic Ave., has gorgeous suits in unique patterns and styles ranging from $59 - $99. You can check out the different styles before in person at going there www.icapriccimilan.com. If you’re the more trendy, athletic type, try Epic Surf Shop, located at 1122 East Atlantic Ave., which has a wide variety of suits for both men and women, all under $80. The largest selection of swimwear with the most stylish fashions can be found at Kokonuts, 310 East Atlantic Ave. You will not be steered wrong in any of these local swimwear shops. Their employees are friendly and willing to help you choose the best suit to use for visual inspiration. "If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy and inspires your hopes." -Andrew Carnegie Even more important than swimwear shopping is goal setting. As a personal trainer who has personally lost more than 60 pounds, I know that setting realistic and attainable goals will be the most successful step to a healthier and happier you! Instead of just saying “I will fit in my new bikini this summer,” start using the acronym SMART for setting goals: S – SPECIFIC. Goals need to be detailed and precise. M – MEASURABLE. Take the time and effort to measure and weigh yourself so you are able to clearly see your progress. A – ACHIEVABLE. Make your goals reasonable and achievable. R – REALISTIC. Be honest with yourself when setting your goal. T – TIME FRAMED. Goals need to have a time frame.

Don’t procrastinate. Grab a pen and start writing down your goals according to the SMART plan! It’s important not to be too hard on yourself if you suddenly feel a lack of motivation and get off track. Stay positive and focus on how amazing you will feel after you have achieved your goal. Be patient and remember: hard work always pays off. Break through your self-limiting beliefs and start taking action to catapult your confidence level this summer! Finally, combine visual inspiration and the SMART goal-setting technique with my top “Beach Body Exercises” you can do anywhere. Pushups: There are many variations you can try, ranging from pushing off a wall in a standing position, to placing your feet on a step or chair. Push-ups will strengthen and sculpt your entire upper body. Squats: Squats target the most problematic areas: thighs, hips and buttocks. Start with sitting on a chair and standing up, then gradually progress to a basic squat. Proper technique is crucial, but when performed correct-

ly, squats are the crop de crème when it comes to tightening and toning up! Planks: Planks are an excellent abdominal exercise that builds core strength and stability. Keep your forearms and toes on the floor with your torso rigid and hold for 10 seconds to start. Over time, work up to 60 seconds. Sprinting: Touted as the best fat burner around, sprinting speeds up your metabolism and keeps your cardiovascular system in shape. Time is valuable. Dump your long and boring cardio sessions with bursts of sprints for 15 to 20 minutes. Are you ready to leave your sarong at home this summer? Start today using my triple- threat technique: 1) visual inspiration, 2) SMART goal setting, and 3) Beach Body Exercises. Ignite the willpower from within to look and feel your best this summer! DELRAY BEACH, FL – The Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC), the Palm Beach County Sports Commission and the Seagate Hotel & Spa worked together to bring the Extreme Professional Volleyball tournament onto Delray Beach for the very first time in September of last year. The goal for adding the new event to the annual roster was to bring major exposure to the city through a new and fun event, highlighting the beach. A 30 second television spot titled “The Big Swing – Delray Beach” was created out of the one-day tournament and aired a whopping 104 times. There were 31 television segments discussing the Delray Beach leg of the national tournament and 520 mentions during other shows. The total number of subscribers for the network came to 168 million. The DBMC, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission and the Seagate Hotel are officially in discussions to host the National Championship Tour for 2012. “Bringing the EVP Tour to Delray Beach last year was such a wonderful experience. We were very impressed at the support we received on the community, city and county levels while planning the tournament,” says Ross Balling, Tournament Commissioner for the EVP Tour. “The volleyball community, the Seagate Hotel, the DBMC and the Palm Beach Sports Commission were all incredibly welcoming and helpful. It is a no brainer for us to bring the National Tour to Delray Beach,” he adds. For more information call 561-279-1380 ext. 17, www.downtowndelraybeach.com

PASQUAL RANICH: A HURRICANE FORCE IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY by Jamie Salen The Pineapple Staff Writer

By Robert Allen’s standards, Pasqual Ranich, owner of the Hurricane Bar & Lounge, a local watering hole just off East Atlantic Avenue in downtown Delray Beach, is anything but behind on his rent. As a staple in the community for 31 years, Pasqual began his love affair with Delray Beach the day his grumbling tummy led him off of highway 95 and into Boston’s on The Beach for what was supposed to be a quick bite to eat on his way to the Keys. Within an hour he was offered a job at the popular beachfront hangout, which he immediately accepted. “I never looked back,” Pasqual simply explains. During his long career as beloved bartender and manager at Boston’s, Pasqual saw Delray Beach transformed from a small undeveloped town into a thriving tourist destination. Today, as a business owner himself, he recognizes the importance of keeping the community spirit alive in Delray Beach. “We all have something to offer the community. Some might have money to give. Some have a service to donate. Some might just have a couple hours of their time to offer. What I have is the Hurricane Bar & Lounge, so that is what I contribute,” says Pasqual. “Contribute” seems an understatement when you take a look at the long list of causes Pasqual has supported. The Hurricane Bar & Lounge has become a big part of the solution to a widespread problem of need. From healthcare to homelessness and education, Pasqual addresses universal problems on a community level. “We hear in the news every day that the rising cost of health-

care has become a crippling problem for many, but what we rarely hear is how this problem has affected the family living next door to us,” explains Pasqual. “We may not be able to solve the national health crisis in my corner bar, but with a little bit of charity we can ensure the woman who lives next door to us can have her kidney transplant,” he adds. “Support Our Lisa’s Kidney Transplant Fund” began with a pair of best continued on p. 26

ELRAY BEACH, Fla.— The owner of a small shop on West Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach remembers when most people thought of downtown Delray as “everything east of Swinton Avenue.” But in recent years, said Woodrow Lockett, who operates iShip Pack & Ship at 402 West Atlantic Avenue, “I’ve seen the transition that’s happening, and I think it’s awesome.” That transition is the ongoing redevelopment of the western portion of Atlantic Avenue, downtown Delray’s main thoroughfare. For many years, the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) has been acquiring and assembling property along West Atlantic Avenue in order to facilitate redevelopment, with the ultimate goal of extending downtown business activity westward to Interstate 95. Milestones in the CRA’s efforts have included the development of the mixed-use Atlantic Grove project in 2006, the completion of the West Atlantic Avenue beautification project in 2009, and the creation of the West Atlantic Plaza in 2010. The CRA also assembled numerous land parcels that resulted in the development of the South County Courthouse and the new Delray Public Library, two key public facilities that attract hundreds of people

for Proposals (RFP) for the development of 5.07 acres of CRA-owned property on West Atlantic between SW 6th and SW 9th Avenues. Developers have until June 1 to submit their plans for consideration. Proposals may be for all or a portion of the properties, and may also include the use the CRA’s development incentives, such as a long-term land lease through the Land Value Investment Program. Economic Development Director Vin Nolan said the hotel project is a signal to the broader development community that there is new momentum in the West Atlantic area. “There have been few new projects in and around that region for a number of years, partly because of the recent economic decline,” Nolan said. “But development of a hotel facility has definitely piqued the interest of other developers, for both the West Atlantic corridor

and Delray Beach in general.” Existing West Atlantic Avenue businesses are greeting the news with anticipation. “The hotel will be a great improvement in upgrading Delray,” said Linda Singleton, deli manager at Tony’s Market & Deli at the corner of NW 3rd Avenue and West Atlantic Avenue. “I live right over there, on Southwest 14th Avenue, and I think it’s a real positive

City of Delray Beach invites public to attend Chick-fil-A Leadercast May 4 event takes place at Office Depot headquarters The City of Delray Beach invites the public to attend the upcoming Chick-fil-A Leadercast on Friday, May 4, 2012, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Office Depot Corporate Headquarters, located at 6600 North Military Trail, Boca Raton.

Chick-fil-A Leadercast is a one-day leader development event that is broadcast live from Atlanta, Georgia to hundreds of sites throughout the nation, including the City of Delray Beach. This year's program will be held at Office Depot's LEED Gold certified Corporate Headquarters and will focus on the "Power of Choice." A diverse group of internationally-

acclaimed authors, leadership experts and practitioners will share insights that will help leaders empower others at work, at home and in the community to make choices that matter. Evelyn Jones, owner of Salon on the Avenue, anticipates new business that a West Atlantic hotel could bring.

to West Atlantic Avenue each day. Now the agency is focusing on developing vacant parcels west of SW 6th Avenue—and the effort is picking up steam. The CRA is currently finalizing agreements with a developer for construction of a moderately priced hotel in the 900 block of West Atlantic Avenue. “The hotel project has generated new interest in the area, so we’re now soliciting proposals for the redevelopment of additional property near the hotel site,” said CRA Executive Director Diane Colonna. On March 12, the CRA issued a Request

thing, especially because it will bring jobs.” Evelyn Jones, owner of Salon on the Avenue at 301 West Atlantic Avenue, said she is excited about having a business-class hotel a few blocks down the street. “All the merchants on the west end of the Avenue want the same action as the east end has. We want to see traffic in our stores,” said Jones, “and other developers coming in and building more things.” What might those things include? Financial Planning Seminars set at Delray Beach Library

from page 25

The Delray Beach Public Library, 100 West Atlantic Avenue, continues to offer the community programs on all aspects of financial planning. Two upcoming seminars are listed below. Wednesday, April 11 2:00 – 3:30 pm In conjunction with UBS Financial Services, a free informational seminar titled: “How Do You Want to be Remembered?” is scheduled. This seminar will discuss the value of an estate plan to preserve your legacy and transfer your wealth and values to the people who matter most to you. The seminar will be presented by Colleen R. Schuhmann, VicePresident – Investments, at UBS Financial Services with Guest Speaker M. Adam Bankier of the Bankier Law Firm.

friends, both named Lisa, who were lucky enough to be an exact match when one suddenly needed a new kidney. While a transplant would initially save Lisa’s life, she would also need $1,500 a month in order to purchase the lifesaving medicine not covered by her insurance company. The event held at The Hurricane raised enough money to cover her annual medical costs. “Big Mama Essie Reeds Team of Life” is another perfect example of a worldwide crisis being fought on a community level. When Pasqual was introduced to the one-woman charity powerhouse that had taken on the problem of poverty in his area, he knew he had to help. Mama Reed, a struggling local mother who had dedicated herself to feeding the poor and offering her time to at-risk children, presented a perfect opportunity for a fundraising event at the Hurricane. Pasqual and his patrons came together to support events, raffles and gift certificates all in the name of Big Mamma. “The causes I choose to support have a common thread of community. There are amazing people doing amazing things right under our noses every day,” says Pasqual.

“Sisters of Sunshine” is another prime example of the type of grass-roots fundraising Pasqual favors. The group recently held a series of 40 benefits, each in the name of a different educational group in the area. The Hurricane Bar and Lounge was a major part of “Kickin it for the Kids,” a kickball tournament designed to raise money for local education programming. Habitat for Humanity, Karen Slattery Education Research Center and Delray Citizens for Delray Police are just another handful of causes adopted by Pasqual and the Hurricane Bar and Lounge in the last year. Pasqual and his service in the community represent an important trend in philanthropy. It has not been easy for small businesses anywhere in recent years and often times, struggle breeds isolationism. What we can learn is to take a step back and see what we as business leaders can do to help our community. In the end, every step we take to help another is a step we take toward each other, and there has always been power in unity. For more information on the charities named in this article contact Pasqual Ranich at the Hurricane Bar and Lounge 561-2780282. www.hurricanelounge.com

LOVING DELRAY BUT STILL NOT READY TO BUY? - RENT INSTEAD The time has come. You are ready to make the move, but you just don't have the time to house hunt. Renting in Delray Beach is a great option while you get to know the area or if you just aren't ready to commit to home ownership. Delray Beach has many full time residents who choose to rent and some "Snowbirds" who only sign leases for three to four months a year. Long term, short term, furnished and unfurnished are terms you will need to familiarize yourself with if you decide to go the process alone. I might suggest soliciting the help of a local Realtor as their fee is regularly paid by the landlord and their local insight can be extremely useful. Either way the following info should prove helpful. Typically short term rentals will be fully furnished - literally down to the silverware. This is extremely attractive to seasonal renters as you can just throw your clothes in the car and come down for the winter. Since part of your monthly rent payment goes to cover the cost of these necessities, rents can often run 50% higher for the same type of unit. This increase also covers part of the owner’s expenses since the unit may have some months of vacancy during summer months. Seasonal rental landlords are also required to pay taxes on the rent which adds to the price and is usually passed on to you, the tenant. Renting with pets can be difficult. The large majority of available rentals are in condo or

townhouse buildings and because many of these types of residences share common areas (walkways, stairways, or elevators) to gain access to ones unit, the size, breed, or even the question of allowing a pet at all will most likely be regulated. If old Roofus the Doberman is upwards of 40 pounds you may need to rent a single family home, as there are very few places that will accept him. Also expect to pay a pet deposit which often range between $250 to $500. Some popular long-term options are duplexes and townhomes. If the landlord likes pets they may even allow the aforementioned Mr. Roofus to reside with you. This style of home gives you the feeling of home ownership and affords some additional privacy as compared to a condo. Units like these are typically owned by investors who renovate the inside and update appliances along with other fixtures. Exterior maintenance and landscaping is often provided by the landlord or the home owners association but be sure to have this outlined in your lease. Another option is an address like Worthing Place on SE 2nd Avenue. This is a rental community very reminiscent of a New York apartment building. A staffed front desk greets you as you enter the front door, at which point all guests are required to sign in. They also offer dry cleaning service and grocery delivery through local vendors. This is a great option for the busy couple or traveling businessperson since the property is completely maintained, requiring the tenant to just lock the door when they leave. Top of the line furnishings like this will run you upwards of $2,000/month for a 2-bedroom unit, yet there is typically less security deposit required as opposed to renting from a private owner. What do you have to consider when calculating how much you can afford for rent? Typically private landlords will require first month, last month, and a security deposit equal to one month's rent before moving in. With a few exceptions you will still need to obtain your own connection to sewer/water, electric, and any cable or entertainment service. Unless prior agreement has been obtained, the landlord carries homeowners insurance on the dwelling. Renters are typically required to obtain renters or contents insurance, as the landlord’s policy will not cover your personal possessions or fixtures in the event of theft or loss due to fire/water. Most landlords in Delray Beach are required to obtain a landlord permit which you may want to confirm has been issued before signing your lease. These permits are issued at city hall and cost around $60 according to www.mydelraybeach.com. What are you waiting for? Come join us in paradise. Come eat or come play, you'll want to stay - in beautiful Downtown Delray! To Advertise Call Ryan at 954-415-1895 or email Ryan@DelrayPineapple.com

Delray CRA seeks new development for West Atlantic Avenue The Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for approximately 5.07 acres of CRA-owned property along the West Atlantic Avenue corridor in the downtown area. Proposals are due to the City of Delray Beach Purchasing Division at City Hall (100 NW 1st Avenue) by 2:00 pm on Monday, May 21, 2012. Developers may submit proposals for a portion of or all of the redevelopment sites, which are located on the south side of West Atlantic Avenue between SW 6th and 9th Avenues. Most of the land is commercially zoned, with portions zoned to allow medium density residential use. Desired uses include office space, retail and restaurant uses, as well as public/shared parking that can promote pedestrian activity and bring new jobs to the area. Proposals may include the use of the CRA's economic development incentives, designed to promote redevelopment projects and job creation. Incentives are subject to

available funding and CRA board approval. Over the years, the CRA has invested heavily in the West Atlantic Avenue corridor and the surrounding neighborhoods. Recent beautification projects have improved medians, sidewalks, landscaping, alleyways and streetscapes in the area. The CRA's most recent RFP resulted in plans to construct a new hotel along the corridor. The current RFP contains a no-lobbying provision, prohibiting potential applicants, including their team members, consultants and representatives, from contacting CRA commissioners or staff on any matter related to the RFP. Inquiries must be submitted in writing to the City's Procurement Official in the Purchasing Division at City Hall. Interested parties will be able to address staff directly at a voluntary pre-application meeting, scheduled for Friday, March 30, 2012, at 10:00 am, in the First Floor Conference Room at City Hall. To download an electronic version of the RFP, go to http://bit.ly/xsYyOM. Questions about the RFP must be submitted in writing to the City of Delray Beach Purchasing Division, 100 NW 1st Avenue, Delray Beach, FL 33444.

with a mix of uses consisting of Class “A” office space with retail, restaurant, and service use components as well as shared or public parking. A series of studies and public meetings revealed that the community would like to see service uses such as a pharmacy, a restaurant, and a medical or dental office along the corridor. Nolan said those uses make sense from an urban development perspective. “Once you put a hotel in there, something like a pharmacy is even more likely to come, because it complements that type of facility,” Nolan said. Among the factors that the CRA will use in judging developer proposals: the inclusion of a local employment hiring program, and

the services and economic benefit the project will bring to the surrounding community—all of which is music to the ears of merchants like Lockett. “Downtown should be all the way from the beach to I-95,” Lockett said. Then, referring to the area’s ZIP code, he concluded with a smile: “We need more in the 3-3-4-4-4!” For more information, or to download a copy of the RFP for West Atlantic Properties, visit the CRA website at www.delraycra.org or contact the CRA office at (561) 276-8640.
