HERE COMES SUMMER!
DELRAY BEACH, FL – Delray’s Beach Properties Owners Association put its money where its proverbial mouth is last month, as they presented the city with a check for nearly $24,000 to help cover the cost of restoring the municipal beach pavilion. The repair of the pavilion is the centerpiece of a plan to revitalize and upgrade the beachfront. The pavilion sits at Ocean Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue. The donation to the city represents the proceeds of a “Delray’s Got Talent” show fundraiser the BPOA conducted earlier this year. The association held a similar fundraiser a year ago, and over the two years has donated nearly $60,000 to the project. The hope is that donations, coupled with the city funds and donated work from the project’s architects and construction company, the project can be done in time for the upcoming winter tourist season. “The BPOA has held up its end of the bargain,” spokeswoman Mary Renaud said during a recent city commission meeting. “The residents of Delray are watching.” City commissioners earlier in the year considered pulling the plug on all capital improvement projects, including the pavilion, to plug a $3.2 million hole in the budget. Commissioners, however, pulled the pavilion project from the chopping block.

DELRAY BEACH VIES FOR BEST SMALL TOWN
Wins Florida’s top spot in “Best of the Road” competition The Best of the Road competition is coming to Delray Beach. This national tour is sponsored by Rand McNally and USA Today. For the last 10 years Rand McNally has been celebrating locations that are lesser-known or off the beaten path, are unique or have special character and capture the region’s essence. These destinations have been featured as the Best of the Road® in travel guides and in the Rand McNally Road Atlas. In May, Delray Beach joined the competition and thanks to voting by Delray Beach locals and lovers, the town vaulted to the top of the best small towns in Florida, beating out Deland at the last hours of voting. Thanks to the voting and social media frenzy spearheaded by the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC), Delray Beach has been chosen as one of the 30 small towns that will receive a Road
Rally visit in June. Road rally teams will leave Washington DC and visit 30 small towns who will vie for the title of Most Beautiful, Most Patriotic, Friendliest, Most Fun, and Best Small Town for Food. On July 15th the Road Rally teams will arrive in Seattle and announce the best small towns in America. “I’m so proud of Delray Beach, enthused Stephanie Immelman, Destination Marketing Manager for Delray Beach. “We came into the competition late but thanks to our incredible community we will be able to show the whole nation what we already know. Delray Beach is the best small town in America.” Be sure to check out the DBMC’s Facebook page www.facebook. com/downtowndelraybeach or the www.godelray.com website for updates on the Road Rally team’s arrival in Delray Beach.

The Garage Blues series debuts this summer in response to overwhelming audience demand, and features artists who have impacted the development of the art form. Individual tickets are priced $20-$30, and series subscriptions are available. Full details are available at www.artsgarage.org. ‘“Jazz Project has been passionately received from the start,” said Alyona Ushe, Executive Director of Arts Garage. “Our audiences feel a connection with the artist that is rarely experienced in night clubs and larger venues. CITY APPROVES GATEWAY FEATURE Coloring book project highlights Delray architectural icons & styles New entrance into downtown Delray Beach By Paula Detwiller Special to The Pineapple Inspired by last year’s Centennial and a crayon-art exhibit at the Cornell Museum, the Delray Beach Preservation Trust has created a unique coloring book that will preserve Delray’s architectural history for years to come. The Architectural Icons & Styles of Delray Beach coloring book consists of handdrawn sketches of the city’s most significant architecture over the past 100 years. It includes such well-known structures as the 1925 Arcade
of each architectural icon. In the back, you’ll find detailed descriptions of each historic structure and its corresponding architectural style. “It’s a coloring book for children, but it’s for grown-ups too,” said Trust president JoAnn Peart. She laughs when she remembers how at first she was calling it an “adult” coloring book—until people started jumping to the wrong conclusion. Significantly, a copy of the book with autographs of each participating design professional will be placed in the Trust’s 2011 – 2111 Time Capsule at Delray Beach City
The city wants to build an entrance on Atlantic Avenue that will make downtown feel seamless from I-95 to the beach. It’s part of a longawaited project to spruce up West Atlantic Avenue. “A lot of people want to see this done. As soon as you get off I-95 they want to see a beautiful area,” says Delray Beach City Commissioner Adam Frankel. The Gateway Feature, anticipated to be completed by Spring 2013, will create a grand entrance to downtown Delray Beach. Six 30-foot concrete columns decorated with unique designs, will line West Atlantic Avenue between I-95 and NW/SW 12th Avenue, paying homage to the rich culture and history of Delray Beach. Additional improvements will include landscaping, a winding sidewalk, and trellis feature. The community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is providing nearly $1 million for the project. “The money comes from our budget, it’s tax increment financing. A portion comes from property taxes that goes toward improvements and redevelopment projects,” says Diane Colonna, the executive director of the Community Redevelopment Agency. A $200,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation will also help offset the cost. Colonna hopes the project will help spur other development on West Atlantic where vacant lots are available.

Building and Tap Room, the 1926 Colony Hotel, and the 1935 Spady House. Preservation Trust board member and interior designer Donna Sloan spearheaded the project, enlisting 16 local architects and design professionals to contribute black-andwhite line drawings to the book.
“I tried to match each designer with either a project they worked on, or something representative of their style.” Donna says. “For example, we asked George Brewer to draw the Delray train station, because his firm designed the Ocean City Lumber project.” In the front of the coloring book is a beautifully illustrated map indicating the location

DELRAY BEACH, FL – The forecast called for rain, but on Thursday, May 17th in downtown Delray Beach, the sky did not fall on the 50 circus performers lining Atlantic Avenue for The Big Top “On The Ave.” The Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC) pulled out all the stops for the most exciting installment to date of the recently renovated Signature Delray Beach Event Series.
Onlookers watched locals climb the ladder and swing down onto the net. Between guest swingers the professionals running the trapeze displayed their skills as they flipped and flew from one swing to the next for the excited crowd. Colorful tents running the length of all six blocks housed the “Open Air Gallery” contemporary art exhibit and the “Live the
The Big Top “On The Ave” spanned six blocks of Atlantic Avenue, from Swinton Ave to SE/NE Sixth Ave and featured the Cirque Style Rainbow Circus, as well as Trapeze Experience’s Flying Trapeze. The Rainbow Circus, based out of Miami, stationed an eclectic mix of performers on each block. The favorite acts of the evening included fire dancers, high-flying acrobats, stilt walkers, world class jugglers and dancing pirates. The three main staging areas each exhibited a different theme using coordinated costumes and music. Attendees passed through Pirate Alley, Bollywood and Vegas as they strolled through Circus Town. A huge success of the night was the Flying Trapeze on the Old School Square front lawn. The “Doin’ Good in the Neighborhood” Double Matching Grants Program for Neighborhood Signage now has “buy-in” from the City of Delray Beach and the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). The two agencies have agreed to participate, along with the Trust, in providing matching funds to neighborhood groups that raise money for signs identifying their neighborhoods. A formal “tri-party agreement” is currently being drafted by the city attorney. How it works Here’s how the Double Match works. Neighborhoods whose residents raise up to $500 toward the purchase of a sign can receive up to $1,000 in additional funding—$500 from one party and $500 from a second party. The neighborhood’s location determines which two parties match the funds: • The Trust will provide up to $500 per
year in matching funds to those neighborhoods in the historic districts (Marina, Old School Square, West Settlers, Del Ida Park, and Nassau Park). • The CRA will provide up to $500 per year to those neighborhoods within the CRA districts. • The City, through its Community Improvement Department, will provide the difference where necessary. Neighborhood groups don’t have to raise $500 to be eligible; any amount up to $500 will be double-matched. Encouraging community pride “Delray Beach is one of the few cities that does not have signage delineating its historic districts or marking its older, established neighborhoods,” says Trust board member Donna Sloan. “We’re creating a financial incentive for neighbors to come together and show their community pride while promoting a sense of place within their neighborhoods.” Sloan has worked diligently over the past year to gain budget support for the double match program from the City and CRA. She recently drew up Program Guidelines and Participation Requirements for grant applicants, which have been approved by the two partners. Meanwhile, a prototype sign for historic districts was fabricated last fall and installed at the corner of SE 1st Street and SE 7th Avenue in the Marina Historic District. The design, by Trust board member and local Architect Dan Sloan, incorporates a 20” by 30” two-sided color sign hanging from a 10-foot black metal post with a fluted base. Lake Ida swings into action The Lake Ida Property Owners Association may be the first neighborhood group to apply for double matching grant funds. It held a well-attended 5K walk/run on Saturday, April 14 specifically to raise money for two neighborhood boundary signs. “We look forward to seeing the post-andsignboard design replicated in each Delray neighborhood, with imagery that appropriately reflects the area,” says Dan Sloan. Paula Detwiller writes for the Preservation Trust, the CRA, and other clients. Her website/ blog can be found at www.pdwrites.com.

The City of Delray Beach, Boca Raton and Boynton Beach have joined forces to enhance crime fighting techniques by establishing a new Biological Processing Lab (BPL). The 1,800 square foot facility, located at 6500 Congress Avenue, Boca Raton, opened on April 15, 2012 and will improve DNA processing by pre-screening samples before they are sent to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) for further evaluation. The BPL was funded through the National Institute of Justice Grant in the amount of $519,544 and equal contributions from all three (3) cities. Delray Beach provided $59,360, which was paid from the City’s federal forfeiture funds (received from assets seized in criminal activities). This important law enforcement tool will assist in expediting the traditionally long DNA processing time (up to 12 months) by prescreening evidence to determine if DNA is present. If found, the data will be submitted to the PBSO’s Forensic Biology Unit for further analysis and comparison with a shared law enforcement database of known criminals. It is expected that this new process will contribute to the apprehension of criminals faster and ultimately reduce the number of crimes that they are able to commit. “The DNA lab is another great example of how our three cities have partnered together to make us more efficient and effective,” said Assistant Police Chief Joseph Milenkovic. “Preparing DNA at the Biological Processing Lab will significantly decrease the time it takes for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to analyze and identify crime scene evidence. The Delray Beach community will be safer because our Police Department will be able to get the criminals off the streets faster.” For more information, contact City of Delray Beach Police Sgt. Nicole Guerriero at (561) 243-7841 or E-mail Guerriero@ mydelraybeach.com.

In unprecedented style, Boston Proper and the Achievement Centers joined together to host an evening that was truly an affair to remember. “What a spectacular evening! The turnout was inspiring. It was great to see so many people coming together to make a difference for those in need locally. One of the reasons we love the Proper Affair is because we get to see firsthand the lives we touch,” said Sheryl Clark, President of Boston Proper. The Boca Resort’s Great Hall was transformed into an ultra-chic, hip space where 325 guests gathered to enjoy upbeat music, delectable food and great fun! Attendees posed along the red-carpet for photo ops, vied for high-end silent auction, and “got on the bus.” New this year, guests were able to purchase “pieces” of a virtual bus in support of a muchneeded school bus for the Center. The highlight of the evening was an electric runway show featuring the hottest trends of the season – generously donated by Boston
Proper. Eleven Spa in Delray graciously donated their services to style the models’ hair and make-up. Models then graced the runway presenting head-to-toe ensembles which were auctioned to the highest bidder near the conclusion of the event. Nancy Hurd, CEO of the Achievement Centers commented, “Without contentious corporate citizens like Boston Proper we would not be able to help the hundreds of families that we do. The impact that we can make when we all work together is truly amazing.”

and Photography. The “campus,” located on the 2nd floor of the Crest Theatre building, features quiet studios and classrooms, filled with light and windows and an abundance of creative energy. With a variety of classes offered, adults and children can learn a new craft or explore an existing artistic itch. The teachers at the school are a group of talented, interesting and professional people with a passion for educating and stimulating the minds of their students. One such educator, Sid Delmar Leach, who teaches Beginning and Intermediate Drawing to adults, believes strongly that “talent really is just learning to do something well.” Because he also believes that you have to begin with drawing before you can paint, Delmar Leach teaches pencil drawing and includes perspective drawing in its simplest form. Drawing being the foundation to evolving artistic talent, Delmar Leach teaches his students to draw objects found within the classroom, using shading and shadowing. A graduate of both B.Y.U. and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fountainbleau, France, Delmar Leach has spent several years of his life traveling, painting and drawing while abroad. Now an “on and off” Delray Beach local, he’s taught at the School of Art and Photography for about 4 years. He lists among his professions, interior design, architectural design and handbag design and craftsmanship. His own artwork is extremely detailed and his subjects are often cottages and homes in France. He is a firm believer that people, all people, should draw and paint while they travel, an ideal that translates well when teaching in Delray Beach. “I think everybody should learn to do what I do. I didn’t learn until I learned,” he says. Beth Mears, a student at The School of Art and Photography, has been taking painting classes for three terms, and she’s already signed up for her fourth. A stay at home grandmother, Mears moved to Boynton Beach about a year and a half ago. As a way to meet people and become involved in a community, she began volunteering at Old School Square. Soon after she became a student of Carla Golembe, an
award winning acrylic painter and illustrator. Mears says of Golembe’s classes, “It’s a safe place to do your thing.” Mears began taking classes because she was a self-proclaimed “crafty person” interested in learning to paint. Once she got comfortable in Golembe’s class, she began to find her own style, which she calls, “swirl-y”. When Mears asked her husband if he minded her continuing to take classes, he was more than encouraging; he had noticed the positive effect it was having on her. “It’s very affirming. In life there are mistakes and it’s okay. Carla is very encouraging; there are no mistakes. It’s empowering and the fact is, we become like a little family,” she says. “My husband even lets me hang my paintings in the house.”
On the photography side of the school, Jack Wild is the premier professor and mentor. He teaches 7 or 8 classes a term during Season and 5 classes during the Spring and Summer. Wild taught at The Boca Museum School of Art for over 7 years and has been at Old School Square for over 3. While he is reluctant to discuss his commercial photography career that spanned over 40 years, he is enthusiastic to speak of his students. His pride is unmistakable as he shares stories of three female students who received full scholarships to various art schools for photography after taking lessons with him. Another major coup and testament to his gift as a teacher is the recent announcement of those selected to participate in the 61st Annual
All Florida Juried Competition and Exhibition at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. This highly competitive professional exhibition showcases the best and most prominent Florida artists as well as those formerly unknown and emerging talents. Of those chosen from Delray Beach and Fort Lauderdale, 100% are currently or have been Wild’s photography students. More than half chosen from Boca Raton and Boynton Beach are also his students. The competition includes all disciplines of art, so this is quite an achievement to say the least. Wild refers to photography as “The Art of Seeing,” and gives his students weekly assignments that will always be followed with a high level of classroom discussion. “What I really enjoy is when their work changes, their eye changes,” says Wild of his students. “I can motivate and guide someone, but they have to turn the light bulb on.” The other photography teachers at Old School Square are former students of Wild’s and have similar philosophies and methods; teaching through tremendous conversation and avoiding criticism, Wild says he teaches people to “use their camera as an artist uses their brush,” and to “develop their senses to become expressive and creative with what they see.” The School of Art and Photography at Old School Square is remarkable in that the teachers are truly passionate about teaching; it is a choice for each of them and one that they take seriously. Their goals sincerely seem to make artists out of everyone, with an emphasis on the importance of learning properly and being motivated through a safe, comfortable and guided environment. While not everyone may be inclined to become a serious exhibitor or take several classes, there is no question that taking a class at Old School Square is a worthwhile endeavor. If for no other reason than the opportunity to spend a few lovely days with interesting and artistic people, enjoying yet another facet of Delray Beach that makes it such a charming place to be. Class Schedules and Information are available at www.oldschool.org or by calling 561-243-7922, ext. 317.

SAVOR YOUR SUMMER SLIMDOWN S By Christalyn Warner
ummer’s here! That means bikini season and fun in the sun. This is the time of year we exercise more, eat healthier and maintain our Florida tans. Our beaches and the summer heat are great motivators and dictators of our food choices. Its rare that in 90 degree weather you will want hot soup and a lamb shank in a rich red wine reduction. The summer months lead to eating lighter fresh foods with bright flavors. Downtown dining during the summer makes one want to eat delicious vibrant food. Not to mention maintaining that beach body, which becomes a huge priority around June. Going out to eat can often create a problem when your goal is to look healthier and downtown has some decadent restaurants, which could wind up keeping you in the gym 30 minutes longer than usual the next day. Feeling guilty after a decadent meal isn’t really necessary because most restaurants have healthy options that make dining out a more pleasurable experience. Instead of ordering steamed vegetables and grilled chicken, you have many more options than you may think. Having found some great summertime light fare in downtown, you will be surprised that light, vibrant food can be so delicious. Let’s begin with Boheme Bistro, where you can start with a simple hummus appetizer $12.00, and a Fattoush Salad $13.00, consisting of romaine, cucumber, tomato, onion and parsley in a lemon sumac dressing. Follow up with Snapper $32.00, with spinach, garlic, tomatoes and jasmine rice. Or stop by Dada for their Kale Ceaser Appetizer Salad $8.00, and their Vegetable Quiche $15.00, entrée with a sweet ending of a Bowl Full of Berries. $6.00.
Brule is another great spot. Start with their Citrus Ceviche Martini $12.00, or the Arugula Salad $6/$10, with pecan, green apple and bleu cheese. Then onto an entrée of either Pan Seared Diver Scallops & Wild Ramps $27.00, or Grilled Spear Caught Swordfish $27.00. These are all great options to enjoy multicourse meals and feel good at the end of it. Max’s Harvest has a great Palm Beach Harvest Salad $13.00, with Swank Farms lettuces, baby heirloom tomatoes, avocado, apples, almonds, raisins, corn, goat cheese, and champagne chive vinaigrette. And for a hearty entrée, though still healthy, try the Brick Chicken served with warm farro salad, pearl onions, cauliflower, mustard greens, delicata squash and natural jus. Tryst has this delicious Jumbo Asparagus $12.00, with roasted garlic, olives and parmesan small plate. Pan Seared Local Snapper $27.00, and all natural Chicken Schnitzel $21.00, with swank farms lettuces, french feta and heirloom tomatoes are delicious healthy options as well. City Oyster’s Butter Lettuce Salad $7.50, with creamy herb vinagrette, fennel, apple, radish and pine nuts is a delicious light appetizer salad. Their Blackened Grouper $29.00, with mango pineapple salsa, and black beans and rice and Grilled Chicken Breast $21.00, with an herb garlic lemon marinade, served with a bermuda onion, tomato and cucumber salad will surprise your tastebuds. Caffe Luna Rosa has a Vegetable Plate that is out of this world ranging from $15$21 depending on your choices. The Seven Vegetable Burger $12.75, is another winner, wrapped in either a cucumber tortilla wrap or leaf lettuce wrap. The Salmon ai Ferri $25.00, is so delicious you’re going to want to have it at least once a week. Luna Rosa

CHOICEBREW Red & White is a big, Belgian-style witbier brewed with coriander and orange peel and fermented with pinot noir juice. After fermentation, a fraction of the batch is aged in 10,000-gallon oak tanks This incredible blend successfully marries the refreshing citrusy qualities of a Belgian-style white beer with the robust complexity of a bold red wine. It’s been one Dogfish Head’s most popular limited-edition beers; sophisticated and nuanced and damn good overall. Reach for Red & White when you’re grilling meat or nibbling on buttery cheese. Historic Marina District
Delray’s DU20 Holistic Oasis offers the first true sensory deprivation experience in South Florida
Built around the town’s City Marina, the Marina Historic District displays a variety of architectural styles ranging from Mediterranean and Mission Revival to Monterrey, Florida Cottages, and Art Moderne, all blending with the distinctive sub-tropical landscape. Constructed predominantly between 1922 and 1943, the area was home to many prominent seasonal residents who enjoyed its close proximity to the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. The buildings highlight the designs of prominent architects of the day including Gustav Maas, Sam Ogren, Sr., and John Volk. With its narrow and shaded streets, and the City Marina as a focal point, this is the town’s most pedestrian oriented neighborhood. The Marina District is bounded by East Atlantic Avenue to the north, SE 4th Street to the south, SE 7th Avenue to the west and the Intracoastal Waterway to the east. The Marina District was designated a historic district in the Local Register of Historic Places in 1988. The City’s Marina provides 24 rental slips for boats up to 55 feet in length in a nicely landscaped environment at the Intracoastal waterway. Electricity, water, telephone, and cable TV connections are provided at each slip. As you might imagine, there is a waiting list for use of this facility. However, there are often transient slips available on a temporary basis.
The athlete’s secret to elite performance, floatation, is now available in Delray Beach to promote a meditative state of relaxation and activate self-healing. A sensory deprivation tank also known, as a floatation tank, is a lightless, soundproof tank where clients float in salt water at 98 degrees. First developed by American physician, John C. Lily in 1954 to test the effects of sensory deprivation, these tanks are now also used for meditation and relaxation and in alternative medicine. Floatation improves circulation and reduces pain and stiffness in the muscles, joints, ligaments and bones. It enhances immunity and resets your internal thermostat by decreasing stress hormones such as cortisol, adrenaline and ACTH. Other benefits include; improved posture, ability to focus and increased consciousness. The floatation tank used by DU20 Holistic Oasis was created by Float Lab in Venice, CA, the top choice builder of tanks for celebrities and avid floaters such as Joe
Rogan and Robert Downey Jr. Says Joe Rogan, “As you get more comfortable with the floating you actually get better at letting go. You begin to feel more relaxed, more energized and lighter. It’s an amazing experience.” Floatation is not just for top-notch athletes or celebrities. Anyone can experience the benefits of floatation therapy. It is often sought after by business people looking to reduce stress and muscle tension that can be the result of a highenergy work environment. Yogi’s and healers also utilize floatation to improve focus, balance, and concentration. Back pain sufferers use it
to ease physical discomfort and restore balance. Floatation therapy can benefit anyone looking for a noninvasive way to heal or enjoy an ultra-deep state of relaxation. DU20 Holistic Oasis is located at 103 NE 2nd Avenue in Delray Beach. To schedule an appointment or for more information call (561) 455-2147 or go to their website, www.du20.com. Floatation costs are $65 for an hour, $90 for 90 minutes and $115 for a 2-hour session. For maximum benefits, a series of 3-floatation sessions is recommended. DU20 Holistic Oasis is offering a special on floatation services, “Like” them on Facebook and receive $20 off your service.

IT TAKES MORE THAN A HEALTHY DIET AND EXERCISE TO REACH YOUR HIGHEST POTENTIAL
B
y now, I am sure you are well aware of the endless benefits that exercise will bring to your mind and body. It’s no secret that a well-balanced diet consisting of a variety of healthy foods will impact your overall health in the most positive way. You have all heard over and over how trans-fat and sugar will negatively affect your energy and health. However, there is one huge factor that most people do not even consider. As a Personal Trainer and Wellness Coach, I will admit that I even miss the boat with this one when I am training my clients. (Drum roll please…) STRESS! How many of you take the time to de-stress your life on a regular basis? No, flipping through channels while lying horizontally on the coach or taking a minute from your hectic work schedule to check the news feed on Facebook, does not count. Before I dive into explaining the different methods and techniques that will help eliminate the negative and overwhelming stress in your life, allow me to bring to light how prolonged stress is detrimental to the psyche, mind, and body. Simply stated, the human body is not designed to endure prolonged stress. Since stress is something that we cannot physically measure (such as your weight), the symptoms may be affecting your health more than you realize it. You may think illness is to blame for that nagging headache, your frequent insomnia or lack of productivity at work, however, stress
may be the culprit. If you do not take control of your stress symptoms and begin practice the techniques I am about to share, your health problems could potentially worsen. If high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes are conditions that you would rather live without, then keep reading. Firstly, take the time to IDENTIFY the stressors in your life. This is the most important step of all, as identifying the things that stress you out in your life is the first step towards eliminating them. Take the time now to think about what really stresses you out. What people, activities, things cause stress in your life? For me personally, I become very stressed out when I am forced to rush to work or appointments. My heart starts to race and I panic, thinking how unprofessional I will look because I am late and rushing. Imagine, all those feelings and worries could be GONE, if I only gave myself more time to ensure I will not be tardy. Make a list of your top ten stressors and consider how you can eliminate them out of your life today. A simple exercise that will leave you feeling less stressed out right away. Obviously there are circumstances that create stress in your life that you cannot just simply eliminate or change. However we can control how we react to the situation. Try these techniques: 1.) Visualization – not only do the top athletes in the world use this to boost performance and super-charge their ability to succeed, but visualization allows you to approach difficult and stressful situations with confidence. Close your eyes and imagine exactly how you want a scenario in real life to unfold. Next time you face a challenge, why not visualize yourself handling it perfectly and see how powerful it is for yourself. 2.) Meditation – think of this technique as detoxifying the body and mind of unwanted stress. Meditation is one of the most highly effective and time-tested techniques for
lessening our stress levels. It also helps us begin to tap into our unconscious mind, clearing out old negative and unwanted thoughts and experiences that may be hindering our progress. Meditation provides a private, inner sanctuary where we can learn to go when the chaos of a rushed-lifestyle overwhelms us. Clearly, this technique takes time and practice, because most people try to sit still and meditate, only to find that they “just can’t keep their minds still.” However, it may be helpful to know that meditating is not really about turning off your mind, but observing our thinking mind without judgment. Go to your favorite place and give it a try! 3.) Take a deep breath – sounds too simple to be effective? Wrong! Taking the time to focus on taking a few slow and deep breathes will relieve you from any stress, anger and tension you may be experiencing. Next time you are feeling overwhelmed, take a minute to step back and BREATHE, you will change your state of mind immediate. 4.) Seek a Life Coach – Life coaches help people improve lives or personal performance. Focusing on the present and the future, they can help you gain selfknowledge, create more effective goals and help provide a plan and framework within which to go about accomplishing them. They can help you improve your attitude on life and set you on your way to a happier and more successful life. For those of us that are lucky enough to live in Delray Beach, The Quantum Empowerment Center is an excellent facility to help guide you to realize your full potential for happiness, well-being, health and peace utilizing the most effective, evidence-based therapeutic techniques. By participating in the many classes or events they have to offer, you will learn how to enhance your retention and selfmanagement skills to be able to make better
connecting choices at home, work and/or at school. Whether you are feeling completely overwhelmed with all the stressors in your life or looking too learn something new and gain a new perspective on life, The Quantum Empowerment Center can help you. They offer an array of class options ranging from Quantum Forgiveness, Unleash Your Feminine Power, Experience a Course in Miracles, Yoga, Stress Management, Meditation and so much more! I encourage you to stop in and meet Brian Sheen C.A.M., the founder of the center with more than 34 years of experience. It could be a life altering experience for yourself and your loved ones. Visit The Quantum Empowerment Center at www. spiritgrowth.com or call them at 561-272-3733 Hopefully now you will realize that focusing on your well-being through diet and exercise alone, may not be enough. Stress can be detrimental to your health and may be the culprit to so many of your problems. Take the time to practice the techniques I have shared, and make sure to visit the Quantum Empowerment Center in Delray Beach today. You’ve got nothing but stress to lose, now break through those selflimiting beliefs and self-inflicted stress and fears and achieve your greatest potential today!

Netball coming to Delray Beach
DELRAY BEACH, FL – Delray Beach continues to expand its sports marketing initiatives. On June 23rd and 24th Delray Beach locals will have a chance to witness the US Netball Association’s national championship tournament at Atlantic High School. Although invented in the United States in 1891, Netball is considered a “new” sport in its country of origin yet is a high profiled, prime-time TV sport in the United Kingdom, the Caribbean, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The sport, similar to basketball, continues its rapid growth in the United States, Africa and Europe. Players advance the ball by throwing it to their teammates rather than dribbling down the court. Making a basket also requires precision and accuracy as there is no backboard to bounce the ball off of. There is currently a strong lobby to include the sport in the Olympics in the near future. George Linley of the PBC Sports Commission elaborates about the tournament, “The Palm Beach County Sports Commission is extremely excited about the USNA Netball Championships. We have worked closely with USA Netball and the Florida Netball Association to make sure the event comes to Delray Beach. Netball has a strong presence internationally; in fact, it is one of the most popular sports for women in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the Caribbean. Working with the Sports Commission, Delray Beach Commissioner Angeleta Gray and the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC) hosted 40 Netball representatives from all over the world in December 2011. The attendees visited our local hotels, Atlantic High School and the Famous 100 Foot Christmas Tree. As a result of this visit, Delray Beach was chosen as the site for the US Netball Association’s national championships. This is just one of many initiatives to bring sports events to Delray Beach. The City is putting a bid package together to host a Davis Cup tennis tournament in Delray Beach if the tournament is held in the USA. The Extreme Volleyball Professionals (EVP) tour will hold its national championships in Delray Beach on September 22nd and 23rd. The EVP came to Delray Beach last summer and loved the town so much they decided to host the finals here this year. “Sports marketing is an excellent way to provide exposure of our city to new audiences from around the world. Not only do the players and fans discover our town and stay in the local hotels, TV replays are broadcast nationally and internationally”, said Sarah Martin, Executive Director of the DBMC. Preliminary netball matches take place on June 23rd with the finals on June 24th. Play starts at 8:30am. For more information go to www.usanetball.org

Sea Tank Pavilions Opening at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center BOCA RATON, FL – After twelve months of waiting, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center’s four new sea water tanks, including a variety of sealife, are open to the public. Initially, visitors may view the tanks during limited hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday – Saturday and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Within the next few months, they expect to have the tanks open during all operational hours.
Housed under beautiful pavilions constructed with wooden beams and green metal roofs, each of the four saltwater tanks represents a different South Florida marine habitat. The tanks feature both natural and manmade elements, and offer differing views from each side. The two shallow tanks represent the costal mangrove community and a nearshore reef, and contain permanent, custom designed and built habitats to represent the communities. The two deeper tanks, a tropical coral reef and an artificial reef/shipwreck, are currently outfitted with temporary habitats; the smaller deep tank with a temporary representation of a reef, and the larger deep tank will be exhibited with pelagic fish. Later this year, the deep tanks will be completed with permanent representation habitat. “We will continue to expand the animal populations in each tank over time. Sea turtles will be included at a later date, subsequent to receiving a permit from the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission,” says Manager Stefanie Ouellette. The new saltwater tanks and pavilions are the result of over six years of planning, and funded by the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District (GBRBPD). Friends of Gumbo Limbo then raised over $250,000 to create habitats within the tanks with their Fill The Tanks (FTT) Campaign. “We had fabulous infrastructure, but we needed to transform them into learning centers” observed FTT Campaign Chair Patrick Shea. The GBRBPD recently provided the additional $250,000 needed to complete the complementary interpretive and interactive components for the outside of the tanks. New curriculum will be developed for the public and the school programs which will take advantage of the educational value of having accurate, replicated habitats for close observation.

ARTS GARAGE IS SMOKIN’ THIS SUMMER
Blues, Jazz, Theatre, Hip Hop and more... PINEAPPLE GROVE – As the Arts Garage begins their second year, they’re rolling out the red carpet for some legendary performers. Two outstanding series will put the Arts Garage’s already stellar reputation into the stratosphere. The return of Jazz Project, and thanks to overwhelming audience requests the introduction of their Garage Blues series. “We are especially proud of to be hosting the caliber of musicians featured in our Garage Blues Series and Jazz Project Series,” said Alyona Ushe, Executive Director. “These legendary artists have had a lasting impact on American music and I am especially proud to be able to launch these programs during African-American Music Appreciation month in June.” Many of these performers have strong Florida ties, and all have influenced their contemporary artists, along with artists for generations to come. Their contributions to the creation of American music cannot be underestimated, and their stories need to be heard and shared. Also of historic interest is The Arts Garage’s celebration of Hip-Hop. This venue showcases diversity like no other, featuring excellence in every genre. With the Urban Underground’s Summer of ‘ 92, The Arts Garage takes a look back at the music of twenty-years ago, including RunDMC, Dr. Dre, the Beastie Boys and more. In addition, the Arts Garage welcomes back hometown favorite and rising star, Chloe Dolandis and showcases their own Matthew Farmer.

June 2, 2012 9pm Urban Underground: Summer of 92 20 Years of Hip-hop ($10-15) The best Florida MCs, break dancers, poets and live graffiti artists give you a look back at the music and art that defined the culture of the city! See rappers battle it out and poets express their rage at life in the ghettos while b-boys do their thing to many of rap’s greatest songs. Featuring music from the Beastie Boys, RunDMC, Dr. Dre and all new songs that define the current culture of Delray Beach. “The main motive behind the existence of Urban Underground is to cross classes, so to speak, and present a diverse audience with music that knows no cultural bounds,” explains Drew Tucker, Education & Outreach Coordinator at Arts Garage. “The City of Delray Beach has been trying to bring together the various backgrounds within Delray Beach for years and we finally have a means to do this, with music. Pairing hip hop with a seven-piece instrumental section, putting the performance on the stage of the multi-disciplinary venue of Arts Garage and promoting this event across schools, companies and other organizations from the east to west side of the city will result in the coming together of a people for a unified reason – to hear what Urban Underground has to say.” The Garage Blues Series: Tickets $20-$30 June 16, 2012: Blues, 8pm Little Jake Mitchell & The Soul Searchers A teen prodigy from Tampa, soul-singer Little Jake Mitchell toured with James Brown, Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke, won over audiences at the Apollo Theater, and cut his first record for the Chess label in 1957. In 1960, Little Jake and the Blenders were the first African-American band to play at the University of Florida’s Gator Growl, a highly segregated event at the time. Still singing powerfully, Mitchell led his band The Soul Searchers to the semi-finals of the 2012 International Blues Challenge. July 21: 2012: Blues, 9pm Matt “Guitar” Murphy & The Nouveaux Honkies While most people recognize Matt “Guitar” Murphy for his iconic role in the Blues Brothers movies, he had long before established himself as one of the baddest blues guitarists on the planet. While still in his teens, the Mississippi-born Murphy gained fame in Memphis and West Memphis, and he went on to perform and record with Howlin’ Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson and Memphis Slim. His jazzy, sophisticated licks influenced generations of Chicago guitarists, and this year earned him a spot in the Blues Music Hall of Fame. Murphy, 82, has resided in South Florida for more than a decade. For his Arts Garage performance, he’ll be joined by frequent collaborators The Nouveaux Honkies. August 18, 2012: Blues, 8pm Barrelhouse Chuck with Famous Frank & The Nucklebusters Blues Band Chicago is known for its rich legacy of blues pianists, and Barrelhouse Chuck Goering learned from some of the best. Relocating from Gainesville to Chicago in 1979, he befriended blues-piano great Sunnyland Slim, with whom he studied and traveled for 16 years. This also gained him entry to a fraternity of Chicago blues-piano heroes, including Blind John Davis, Big Moose Walker, Detroit Junior and Little Brother Montgomery. Chuck became a formidable player himself, and has performed and recorded with Jimmy Rogers, Hubert Sumlin, Buddy Guy and Kim Wilson, among others. You can also hear him on the soundtrack to the movie Cadillac Records. For his Arts Garage show, Barrelhouse Chuck will be joined by South Florida faves Famous Frank and the Nucklebusters.
The Jazz Project- Tickets $20-$30 June 9, 2012: Jazz, 8pm Doug Carn Quartet Raised in St. Augustine, where he still resides, Doug Carn had an enormous impact on the world of soul-jazz. The pianist, organist, composer and educator crafted classic albums such as Infant Eyes and Adam’s Apple, on which he also wrote distinctive arrangements of songs by Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane and Bobby Hutcherson. With his quartet of regular sidemen from NE Florida, Carn will be playing both standards and original material to lead off the summer series and African American Music Appreciation Month. June 23, 2012: Jazz, 8pm Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio With his long white beard and turban, Hammond B3 wizard, Dr. Lonnie Smith was a familiar fixture on the South Florida jazz scene of the ‘80s and ‘90s. A breakout star in the 1960s, Dr. Lonnie brought his distinctive, exciting organ sound to the records of George Benson and Lou Donaldson, and cut some classic sides of his own for the Blue Note label. Approaching his 70th birthday in July, Smith continues to prove among the most creative voices on his instrument. James Martin will be on drums and long-time collaborator of Smith’s, Randall Dollahan, will be on guitar. July 14, 2012: Jazz, 9pm Oriente The members of Miami’s Latin-roots-fusion band Oriente have performed with some of the greatest musicians, past and present, including Mongo Santamaria, Jaco Pastorius, Celia Cruz and Cachao. Under the leadership of guitarist, vocalist and composer Eddy Balzola, Oriente performs a sizzling mix of jazz, blues and soul driven by Afro-Cuban rhythms and a kicking brass section. They continue to perform all over South Florida, from the Keys to Palm Beach, adding avid fans with every performance.

Pianist Lynne Arriale is a dynamic and soulful performer. In recent years, Arriale, who teaches at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, has toured and recorded with brilliant musicians – including trumpeter Randy Brecker, saxophonist Bill McHenry and bassist George Mraz – as well as with her own trio. Longtime South Florida jazz fans certainly will be out in force to greet drummer Duffy Jackson, holding court behind his drum kit while swinging ferociously and cracking wise. Not only is Duffy among the swingingest drummers around, he’s also one of the funniest. Anyone who heard guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg – who grew up in Miami and attended the University of Miami – knew he was destined to make his mark in the jazz world. A superbly gifted player, Kreisberg toured with jazz greats such as Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker and Red Rodney, and also helmed his own progressive-rock band Third Wish.
July 28, 2012: Jazz, 9pm Lynne Arriale With her tangle of red curls and striking blue eyes, pianist Lynne Arriale is a dynamic and soulful performer. In recent years, Arriale, who teaches at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, has toured and recorded with brilliant musicians — including trumpeter Randy Brecker, saxophonist Bill McHenry and bassist George Mraz — as well as with her own trio. But the focus generally remains on Arriale’s bright playing and introspective compositions, even more so on her latest recording, which is aptly titled Solo. And that’s exactly how you’ll hear her when she performs at Arts Garage this summer. August 11, 2012: Jazz, 8pm Duffy Jackson Big Band Longtime South Florida jazz fans certainly will be out in force to greet drummer Duffy Jackson, holding court behind his drum kit while swinging ferociously and cracking wise. Not only is Duffy among the swingingest drummers around, he’s also one of the funniest. But he comes by his entertainment roots naturally: His dad was legendary jazz bassist Chubby Jackson. And certainly, Duffy has backed his share of legends, among them Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald and Benny Carter. Now living in Nashville, the drummer returns to South Florida for his Arts Garage gig, where he’ll provide the propulsive engine to a roaring 17-piece big band. The New York-based Kreisberg remains an extremely fresh voice on his instrument, whether he’s playing his own evocative compositions or finding fresh expression in standards. He will be presenting on this evening with his NY Quartet.
Little Jake and The Soul Searchers The success of the Jazz Project gave birth to Garage Blues. “We were overwhelmed with requests for blues and are thrilled with the caliber of talent with which we are debuting this signature series,” continued Ushe. “Our instant popularity speaks to the real hunger of audience to experience legendary musicians in an boutique metropolitan setting like ours. “
MusicJones . . .
Jones - noun (a jones). Describes a state in which one experiences strong desire or attraction.
It was there that I learned how important it is to give back”
MusicJones
This name, MusicJones, (MJ) says a lot about him, as a desire for music is what has driven Andrew Penn since childhood. Raised in the church, MJ began on the drums at the age of 8 and knew from then that he should be making music. Andrews great grandparents were among the first Delray settlers in the early 1900’s. He attended Banyan Creek, Carver Middle School, and Atlantic High School before finding himself immersed in the recording arts at Full Sail in Orlando. I met MJ to learn more about him over a Miami Heat basketball game at a local Delray Beach eatery and between plays we really went in depth on what it takes to be a recording artist these days. “You have to be able to do it all to stay competitive.” He continues, “Full Sail was a great experience. I wanted to be able to do everything with music without needing to hire anyone for the process. I wanted to be a complete artist and my education there helped me to do that.” What he means is that by learning not only how to ply his craft, but also to record, market, and promote it as well, he would be a one man label, capable of being in control of his own product.
After College, MJ went to work at the Boys and Girls Club while building his musical portfolio. “That was a really great experience for me, because it was there that I learned how important it is to give back. And even today it is a big part of what drives me.” His travels found him in Tallahassee, where he joined Lay-lo studios and worked as a production engineer for all of the big acts in the area for 5 years. After doing that for a while the “Jones” came back. “I realized that I had to be creating music, singing and writing.” After returning to Delray and collaborating with some of the best hip-hop and R&B acts in the business, MJ is back to creating. His latest creation “Believers”, is already garnishing quite a buzz and the video, directed by Ryan Snyder, will be ready for release later this month. Jones recently performed for a sold out crowd at Propaganda, and plans on releasing his first solo CD at the end of 2012. MJ currently spends his time producing and just signed a production agreement with Vanburen Court LLC. “I’ve learned that when you know what you are meant to do, you just do it, you can’t wait around for the perfect opportunity, you have to make it.” MJ is satisfying his Jones one project at a time, and helping others to do the same. The Search for The Perfect Night Out: PART VI
D
rew and The Woo is a regular Pineapple series that follows two young professionals as they look for the perfect night out in Delray Beach. They’ll need a happy hour, a sub-20-buck dinner, some live music and a late-night hot spot. Call it a scavenger hunt, bar crawl or even a mild bender. Either way - you’re going to want to follow in their footsteps. At the end of the year, Drew and The Woo will select their top choice for each category and invite the whole city to come out and join them for “The Best Night Out In Downtown Delray.” HAPPY HOUR PATIO DELRAY A new concept in a well-worn spot, Patio Delray is an eclectic, seasonally-inspired restaurant located close to the Intracoastal on George Bush Blvd. Their happy hour includes half off drinks and a special appetizer menu. Drew: I can honestly say, I didn’t know this place was here. Ryan: Me neither. But when one of our readers’ highly recommended it, I figured we had to check it out. Drew: Right off the bat, I like the artsy vibe of this place. Ryan: The layout is worth mentioning. A quiet dining area, a plethora of outdoor seating and a free-standing bar make Patio Delray a complete package.
Drew: Although the crowd was a little thin at first, the bar was the obvious spot to hang. The owner, Miss Lily, greeted us the second we walked in the door, such a nice touch.
Ryan: Great pizzas, salads and sandwiches and over 50 craft beers on tap, what more could you ask for? There’s really not a thing this place doesn’t have.
Ryan: I liked how she handles the bar while the staff cooks and serves the food. It’s nice to order a few half off drinks and apps while chatting with the owner.
Drew: They even have a full bar, if beer’s not your thing, and pick drinks daily to run as all day specials.
Drew: Honestly that’s my favorite part. Miss Lily tells it like it is. She’s a world traveler and although she doesn’t like to talk about herself too much, once in a while she shares an interesting tidbit. Ryan: Restaurants on The Ave. can continue to expand their happy hour menus’ and ironically fancy dishes (Gourmet Tater Tots) – but they can’t duplicate this experience. After running out of cold stock of our beer of choice - Miss Lily went to the back and put four beers in an ice bucket. By the time we were finished with our first round – they were perfectly chilled. Drew: But the best part was when Miss Lily took the time to tell each guest that happy hour was about to end. And if an order came in a little after 7pm, no one said “Oh, sorry happy hour is over. The computer won’t let me put it in.” (Like we’ve heard so many times on The Ave. at 7:01.) Ryan: There’s a lot to be said about the difference in experience between owner run dining gems like Patio Delray, and the large corporate owned restaurants. DINNER FOR UNDER $20 MELLOW MUSHROOM
Ryan: I love checking out their little chalkboard when I’m in the area; $3 Margaritas? Yes please! $2 Blue Moons? Sure, why not. Cold Mojitos on a hot Sunday afternoon? Duh! Drew: Absolutely! But let’s remember why we’re here. For under $20 per person, we’re chowing and guzzling. A couple of Cigar City Maduro Brown Ales, two salads, and a medium pineapple and bacon pizza (strongly suggested by our friendly server) all in our budget. Ryan: This isn’t some cheap pizza joint with greasy pie and a two slice special either. Drew: Not that we’re opposed to the two slice specials. Ryan: No, of course not, but Mellow Mushroom delivers a dining experience worthy of a Friday night out. Drew: Or a Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night out. Ryan: With their menu and prices, why not! LIVE MUSIC BACK ROOM BLUES BAR A throwback true blue Blues Bar located on the corner of Atlantic Ave and Congress. Expect regional blues heroes and a fun crowd. Ryan: This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Drew: I told you. All this time I’ve been telling you about the great spots outside the invisible walls of “downtown”.
A funky pizza palace with craft beers and out of the ordinary signature pies. Ryan: We all know it well: The Mellow Mushroom, an absolute no-brainer in this category. Drew: Which begs the question… what took us so long? Ryan: Well it’s probably the fact that we eat and drink here almost every week. Drew: Yeah – good point.
Ryan: Yeah well last time you took me to Shats in Boynton and I was strip searched before I got to go in. Drew: Haha, yeah but you had fun right? Ryan: No doubt. But now I’m at Back Room Blues Bar and LOVING IT! Where do I even begin to express my love of this joint? Drew: You don’t. I do. And I say we start with the music. Tonight’s band is called Bobby and The Renegades. They have the best blues guitarist I have ever heard outside of New
Orleans. P.S.- he’s only, like, 20 something. Ryan: He looks about 14 1/2 to me. Pretty sure I saw his mom drop him off before the show. They call him Steve “Baby Face” Laudicina. Drew: You just made that up, no one calls him that. His name is Steve Laudicina and chatting with him I learned, he’s a super laid back kid with a world of talent. He’s going to go a long way and right now you can see him right in Delray. Ryan: The nickname will catch on… give it time. I feel like there’s more to this place than just music. Can we just stay here the rest of the night? Our crew is having too much fun and I’m just getting to know the cool bartenders. Drew: These nights are called “Drew and The Woo,” we can do whatever we want. LATE NIGHT SPOT STILL BACK ROOM BLUES BAR Ryan: Let’s laydown the layout for our loyal readers’. They’ve got a big U-shaped bar, about two dozen tables facing the stage, a high top booth that overlooks the entire bar, a few lounge areas and a pool table. Drew: Don’t forget the animatronic kid’s ride usually found outside of K-Mart’s in the ‘80’s, a popcorn machine circa 1970, walls adorned with pinup girls from the ‘50’s and an overall décor reminiscent of the early ‘60’s. Ryan: “Throwback” and “Old School” are thrown around a lot, but the Back Room experience is more multigenerational. In fact, it’s worth mentioning that we have two of the Pineapple Newspaper owners partying with us here tonight, JD Diaz and Gene Fisher. Gene’s been in Delray Beach forever and has seen the Back Room Blues Bar in several locations. He said that it was actually once run out of the back of liquor store, hence the name. Since then it’s held residence at two locations in downtown Delray and one just across the border in Boca Raton. Drew: Well I for one am glad it’s back in Delray. Ryan: And from the look of it, it’s here to stay.

Get Ready, Set, Grow hosts art show Former Technology Executive Creates Some of Delray’s Most Stunning Art By Ellen Thistle The Pineapple Contributing Writer There is an underground web of men in Delray Beach who know the secret to keeping their wives happy. Most of them don’t even know one another. But they all have one thing in common: three times a year, they go see jewelry designer Stacey Wissow. “This whole thing started with a simple, threestrand, garnet necklace,” Stacey says. “I just wanted three strands of nice beads. And I couldn’t find what I was looking for. When I searched for it online, I just kept coming up with places that sold beads. “ So Stacey decided to make the necklace herself. “I wore the necklace to work one day, and a woman in my office flipped out. ‘Oh my god,’ she said, ‘where can I get one of those?’ I told her I made them. Pretty soon, all the women I worked with were ordering my jewelry.” That was ten years ago. Stacey was working as a technology executive in the finance industry and living in New York City. But in 2004, Stacey realized it was time to make a change. When charged with laying off three people in her department, Stacey nominated herself and two others. She retired and started making jewelry full time. For two years, Stacey supported herself through online jewelry sales and weekly “Tupperware” parties she hosted out of her home. But eventually, she came to the same conclusion many people who live here did: she was sick of the cold weather. She packed up and moved to South Florida. While the desire for a garnet necklace might have sparked what became a life change, the roots of Stacey’s inspiration go deeper. “I’ve always been an artist,” Stacey says, “I really was attracted to color and light. I love glass. I like the transparency, the way it changes based on light.” In fact, Stacey worked with stained glass for years before she started making jewelry. “That kind of led me to real gemstones,” she says, “I found it appealed to the same thing. “ When she says “real gemstones,” she means it. Once a year, Stacey travels to the gem district of New York City. She walks up to inconspicuouslooking locked doors. She rings a doorbell; they buzz her in. She walks upstairs, down dim, bare hallways, and into back rooms with case after case of precious gems stretching from wall to wall.
18-carat Blue Topaz faceted gemstone with blue topaz beads, peridot, and freshwater pearls.
In places like this, Stacey invests in exactly what make her pieces special. She buys tiny, faceted, droplet-shaped sapphire beads, topaz beads in three shades of blue, pendants of clear, caramel citrine and deep, royal amethyst. She examines each tiny gem bead up close. She holds it up to the light. She selects only the ones that are flawless. Stacey doesn’t work with clay or glass beads. “Gemstones have value,” she explains. “You can buy a bag of glass beads, and ten years from now it’s going to be worth exactly what you paid for it. I buy good-quality gemstones and use precious metals, so all of my pieces are investment pieces: they will only go up in value. “I spend thousands of dollars on beads when I go to New York,” she admits, “But I get the best there is.” And then, equipped with dozens of bags of vibrant, precious beads, Stacey sits down at her corner workbench, turns on the light, and gets to work. “I start with color,” she says matter-of-factly. “Usually, I’m inspired by the gems,” And sure enough, her workbench is a kaleidoscope. Upon closer inspection, one thing is immediately clear: this woman has an uncanny eye for color. In one corner, slate-gold pyrite is paired
with lucent, brick-red garnet in the beginnings of a bracelet. Steely hematite accents black, diamondlike spinel in a half-finished necklace. Trays with beads made from blood-red rubies, fiery carnelian, and sea-green turquoise are scattered around her workbench in artistic disarray. This isn’t the kind of beading your eccentric aunt does. Stacey pulls out one of her finished pieces: a necklace of small, tear-drop shaped beads, in an intoxicating color combination of greens, purples, reds, and yellows. “These are sapphires. They’re triple-A quality—that’s the highest rating a gemstone can get…. These stones are perfect.”
Natural Turquoise and sterling silver
Once Stacey has completed the beading for a piece of jewelry, she chooses from fasteners made of braided sterling silver and 14-karat gold⎯highquality clasps that are miniature works of art in their own right. “The way you finish a piece is as important as the whole piece.” She explains. “I use professional beading wire, wire guards, crimp beads (which I knot underneath), and I use expensive clasps. My pieces don’t break.” She brings out another finished work of art: an 18-carat pendant of watery blue topaz dangles on a string of small, lustrous freshwater pearls and glimmering, chartreuse peridot beads. It’s breathtaking. (PHOTO) After moving to South Florida to escape the cold weather, Stacey was on her way to the work life she had always dreamed about. There was only one problem: she missed working with people. Tired of the isolation required to be a full-time, athome artist, Stacey figured out a way that she could practice her art and stay connected with people. She opened up a store. For the past five years, Stacey has owned and operated Spotted on 2nd, a charming store in Pineapple Grove that has quickly developed into one of Delray’s favorite treasures. Stacey sells her jewelry along with the work of over fifty American artists. While handmade artisan jewelry (made by her and others) accounts for about 70% of her sales, her inventory is diverse, ranging from handmade mobiles to iron sculptures. It is an ideal place to shop for gifts, and it suits all price ranges. It’s Stacey’s loyal cult following that has kept her in business. “I have husbands who come in here three times a year,” she says, “their wife’s birthday, their anniversary, and Christmas. And they hit a home run every time.” Surrounded by Stacey’s masterpieces, it is hard to remember that only a few years ago, her professional life revolved around board meetings and quarterly reports. Now, she concerns herself with finding high-caliber jewelry clasps and filling her store with unique, quality, handmade art from all over the country. Stacey’s success story echoes that of so many others: it kind of just happened by chance. “One time, I was at the drug store picking up a prescription,” she says. “I was wearing one of my pieces around my neck. It had tourmaline, kind of like this,” she said, gesturing the shape of a long, rectangular pendant on her chest. “The pharmacist bought it from me on the spot, right off my neck. That’s when I knew that I was on to something.” “I kind of fell into it,” Stacey laughs, “And then I just perfected it.” You can find Stacey and her jewelry at Spotted on 2nd, located in the 200 block of NE 2nd Avenue. In Pineapple Grove. Or check out the store’s website at www.spottedon2nd.com.
Get Ready, Set, Grow Academy, an educational preschool located on Jog Road in Delray Beach, Florida, hosted their Fourth Annual Children’s Art Show in May. This event has become quite famous amongst the families of Get Ready, Set, Grow Academy. As part of the curriculum, the children attend art classes where they learn about the use of various types of art medium, color mixing and different artistic styles and techniques. Through the instruction of Get Ready, Set, Grow Academy’s art teacher, Miss Susie, the children studied the Neo-Impressionist styles of Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh. The children then incorporated this knowledge and reproduced magnificent works of art which were displayed in the hallways of the school for all to admire. Integrating the arts into the program is an essential part of a child’s growing process and at Get Ready, Set, Grow Academy, it is apparent that the children take pride in their accomplishments. They believe that through art, children are able to express themselves
creatively and become independent thinkers. If anyone is interesting in visiting Get Ready, Set, Grow Academy to learn more about their program, please call 561-865-2223.
Milagro Center’s Stephen Backhus wins Muse Award
CabaretVerboten
Arts agency tabs arts educator The Palm Beach County Cultural Council, the arts agency that serves non-profit cultural organizations and professional artists throughout the county, recognizes outstanding individuals for their contributions to arts and culture each year by honoring them with their highly coveted “MUSE” Awards.
Cabaret Verboten explores Germany’s Weimar era art-scene, a hotbed of music, theatre, and art designed to use satire and irony to expose corruption and social injustice in the face of the Nazi machine’s insidious advance. Bold, provocative and titillating, Cabaret Verboten features the biting music, songs and scenes of Kurt Weill, Hanns Eisler, Bertolt Brecht, Friedrich Hollaender, Mischa Spoliansky and Marcellus Schiffer. The cabaret of the day reflected society’s degeneration, dripping in decadence and menace, and dealt with social issues in stunning music and song that resonates as if written today. A perfect Arts Garage production, Cabaret Verboten embodies the raw and edgy sensibility of this Delray Beach venue, and the provocative intellectual sexiness of an art form best suited for highly entertaining social commentary.
Milagro Center’s Stephen Backhus“Mr. Steve” doing ARTreach at ARC of Palm Beach County
The Milagro Center’s Stephen Backhus (“Mr. Steve”) was awarded the 2012 Muse Award for Outstanding Arts Educator and was presented with the prestigious award at an entertainment-filled dinner and show at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. “The Muse Awards not only celebrate the many wonderful contributions the recipients are making to Palm Beach County residents, but they also spotlight the intrinsic ways that our cultural community continues to positively impact both the local economy and our overall quality of life,” said Rena Blades, CEO of the Palm Beach County Cultural Council. Mr. Steve teaches mixed-media art to Milagro Center STARS and, as the ARTreach Program Manager, also takes his unique and creative drawings, sculptures, and collages each week to the children served at such organizations as The Haven, The ARC, Quantum House, Kids in Distress, Under 21, The Literacy Coalition, and Head Start. Mr. Steve encourages children and youth to discover their individual creativity and reach their highest potential.

Downtown Development Authority gives away 200 Mother’s Day orchids to downtown customers DELRAY BEACH, FL – The Delray Beach DDA (Downtown Development Authority) produced another successful Mother’s Day Orchid Giveaway promotion! This year the DDA, in conjunction with the Downtown Delray Beach merchants, gave away 200 beautiful Phalaenopsis Orchid Plants to customers of the downtown retail shops, salons and galleries! “Mother’s Day is an important day to retailers and the DDA learned years ago that their role was to incentivize and promote to consumers that Downtown Delray Beach is truly a fantastic shopping destination!” says Marjorie Ferrer, Executive Director, DDA. The Orchid Promotion was kicked off April 28, 2012 with various advertisements promoting to the local and visiting community both through newspaper and television ads. The DDA also produced over 9,000 flyers that were delivered to all the businesses, hotels and local residences within the community. The goal was to motivate the customers to spend at least $200 between April 28 and May 12 and they would receive an Orchid Plant by showing their receipts. It worked! All the orchids were given away within the three days,
May 10-12 resulting in over $40,000 worth of sales in downtown. “The excitement that this program generated with the customers and the businesses made it a success”, expresses Laura Simon, Associate Director, DDA. “On the morning of Thursday, May 10, we were setting up the Orchid Giveaway Stations and a customer came up to us and said ‘is this where I come to pick up my orchid?’ and from that point on we saw many customers over the three days with receipts from many of the downtown shops, ranging from $200 to $2000!” The orchids were placed at three stations throughout downtown to make it easier for those that shopped to pick up the orchids. The stations were manned by 30 different volunteers who have been working with the DDA for the past 15 years. In addition to the Orchid Giveaway, the DDA created a Pamper Mom package to create excitement as well. The contest ran online and at the Orchid stations with no purchase necessary. The Package included items from Naked Hair Salon and More, The Sacred Treehouse, Sundy House, Roxy Lulu Boutique, Petite Connection and Caffe Luna Rosa.
West Atlantic developer commits to local hiring program
The Hollywood, Fla.-based developer responded to a request for proposals to develop several acres of CRA-owned property along the West Atlantic Avenue corridor, issued by the CRA in December 2010. The proposal includes the construction of a four-story hotel and a 135-space rear parking lot between SW 9th and 10th Avenues. The hotel, which would face West Atlantic Avenue, will be a moderately priced chain, such as a Fairfield Inn or Hampton Inn, with approximately 120 rooms, a limited service café, swimming pool and fitness center for guests, and meeting rooms. The CRA previously approved a $1.5 million construction loan and a long-term land lease for the project. The project has started to move through the city approval process, beginning with a request to rezone a small portion project site from RM (Medium Density Residential) to CBD (Central Business District) to accommodate additional parking. For more information, please call the CRA office at (561) 276-8640 or visit the CRA website at www.delraycra.org.
CRA approves development incentive for hotel DELRAY BEACH, FL. – The Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) approved an incentive for up to $332,348.60 under the Development Infrastructure Assistance Program for new hotel proposed for the 900-block of W. Atlantic Avenue, east of Interstate-95. Prime Investors & Developers will receive a partial reimbursement for certain infrastructure costs associated with the construction of the project, paid out over a five-year period. Specific to this incentive agreement is a local hiring program voluntarily proposed by the developer in response to public requests to define the project’s impact on local jobs. Prime has committed to make good faith efforts to procure at least 10 bids from local contractors during the construction phase of the project, and to hire at least 20% of the initial permanent hotel staff positions from within the local community.
The discovery Starhawk speaks of does not limit us to one cause, but one care... the community itself. Every person who has contributed to the progress of the community has a story to tell, and these stories are what will shape our current history. When we think of business leaders that have played an important role in the growth and success of Delray Beach in the past decade, Chuck Halberg is a name that sits at the top of the list.
Stuart & Shelby Development’s Chuck Halberg
In 2006, Chuck Halberg launched his company, Stuart & Shelby Development Inc. Like many new business owners, Chuck began to take an interest in local government and was soon introduced to then Mayor, Jeff Perlman. “His passion for Delray Beach was contagious and I knew I wanted Stuart & Shelby Development to have a positive impact on the town,” explains Chuck. Having named his company after his two children, Stuart and Shelby, it was no surprise when his first major project for the betterment of Delray Beach was a brand new charter school in need of classrooms. The Delray Beach Youth Vocational Charter School was a unique project spearheaded by members of the Delray Beach Police Department. “Being part of this project was incredibly rewarding. This was when I realized just how much a small business can make a difference in the success of their own community,” says Chuck. While the company’s financial contribution to the project was substantial, by offering his businesses services, Chuck
was able to have the maximum impact on the project. “As business people we all have a certain expertise. If we each were to offer that expertise to a cause in the community we could make amazing things happen,” states Chuck. The Achievement Centers of Delray Beach is another organization close to this Delray Beach businessman’s heart. For the past 40 years, the Achievement Centers have helped children and families in the low-income communities of Delray Beach. Having begun as a small day care program, the organization has grown into a social service agency supporting over 700 children and 150 adults. “The Achievement Centers are a living example of how buy-in from the community can make a huge difference,” says Stephanie Siebel, Executive Director of Achievement Centers. In 2008, Stuart & Shelby Development Inc. donated time and materials to convert a local house into offices for the growing organization. “I was first introduced to the Achievement Centers while sitting on the Planning and Zoning Board and I immediately knew I wanted to be a part of such an inspiring group,” explains Chuck. The development of the West Atlantic region of Delray Beach has emerged as a theme for Chuck and his company over the years. While he has mainly focused his charity in support of children and law enforcement, he admits the esthetic improvements of the community are just as important. In 2010, the Historical Trust was interested in restoring an original house in the West Settlers district. In order to assist in the project, Stuart & Shelby Development purchased the house, remodeled it and donated it back to the community. “Investment in the rich history of our town inspires pride for everyone who lives here,” says Chuck.

”
Chuck Halberg
Today Chuck is working with Atlantic High School on the first green home in the United States built by high school students. “The Eagle Nest House is a really exciting project. Not only will the house itself be a wonderful contribution to Delray Beach, but the students building it will have the skills they learn during the project forever,” raves Chuck. As a board member for Delray Citizens for Delray Police, Achievement Centers and the Creative City Collaborate, Chuck has no plans of slowing down any time soon. “As long as I live in Delray Beach, I want myself and my business to be a part of continual growth. I am in it for the long haul.”

GSKY PLANT SYSTEMS OPENS U.S. OFFICE IN DELRAY BEACH
GSky Plant Systems, Inc., the leading provider of Vertical Living Green Wall systems in North America, has opened a U.S. headquarters in Delray Beach. Located at 25 Seabreeze Avenue between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, the office will support all of GSky’s Vertical Living Green Wall systems. GSky will continue to operate its corporate headquarters out of its office in downtown Vancouver, B.C., Canada. “A U.S. office has been our goal for quite some time since a majority of our business in North America is in the U.S.,” said GSky Chief Executive Officer Hal Thorne. “The South Florida area is important because we have
designed and installed walls on Palm Beach Island and several in the Miami area, so we have a great affinity for this area. Delray Beach is a great city known for its arts community. It is a leader in the ‘green’ industry, and there are many tropical plant growers and nurseries nearby, so it’s a perfect fit for GSky. “With many of our new and upcoming projects on the East Coast, this office will give GSky the opportunity to better serve our clients and the market in the U.S. Our sales and technical support team will work out of this office.” In addition, Debbie Kotalic, GSky’s manager of design and plant procurement, will work out of the Delray Beach office.
The City of Delray Beach recently authorized the preliminary engineering for the NE 3rd Avenue Streetscape project that is expected to contribute to the area’s redevelopment efforts. The total cost for the design work, $55,594, will be
throughout the arts district by providing safe, well-lit walkable connections to two (2) nearby City/CRA owned parking lots, and to area businesses. The upcoming improvements, which will include the extension of sidewalks along as many of the corridors as possible, will include the following streets and alleyways: • NE 3rd Avenue from NE 3rd Street to NE 4th Street • The alley east of NE 3rd Avenue, from NE 3rd Street to NE 4th Street • NE 3rd Street from the north/south alley east of NE 2nd Ave to the railroad tracks The scope of the service authorization includes a corridor inventory and analysis, development of a project vision, conceptual plan, implementation plan, final master plan and an evaluation of the existing back-out parking on NE 3rd Avenue. For more information on the NE 3rd Avenue Streetscape Project, contact the City of Delray Beach’s Environmental Services at (561) 243-7322 or by email tack@ mydelraybeach.com.

Cellular Sales creates new sales jobs in Delray Beach Premium Verizon retailer opens new store, invests in the future of local economy
DELRAY BEACH, FL – Cellular Sales, the nation’s largest Verizon premium wireless retailer recently announced the grand opening of a new store at 1900 S. Federal Highway in Delray Beach. “Cellular Sales is thrilled to open our newest store in the Delray Beach community,” said John James, regional director of Cellular Sales. “Florida has been an exceptional market where we have been able to demonstrate how customer care should be.” Cellular Sales was founded in Knoxville, Tenn. 19 years ago and has, for the past four years, been named by Inc. Magazine one of the nation’s fastest growing privately-owned retailers with nearly 4,000 employees. The company currently operates 99 retail locations in Florida and nearly 500 stores in the U.S. The new store made possible the creation of six new sales professional positions, all of which will be filled by local job-seekers. According to James, the wireless retail store’s opening will provide a boost to the local economy not only by the creation of new sales positions but also because Cellular Sales’ employees nationwide average over $51,000 a year, a sum higher than the U.S. median household income. “Each new store is confirmation that customers desire hands-on help and support from wireless experts,” he said. “Our company’s future is brighter than we could have ever hoped.” About Cellular Sales Cellular Sales, based in Knoxville, Tenn., is the nation’s largest Verizon premium wireless retailer. For more information about the new Cellular Sales store located in Delray Beach, call John James at 786-417-4616. Job seekers may visit http://talent.joincellularsales.com/. CRA Increases Incentive for Downtown Retailers More help available for exterior improvements
DELRAY BEACH, Fla.—The Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency Board of Commissioners voted to increase incentives available to retail and office merchants in the downtown core under the Site Development Assistance Program. The program offers a 25% reimbursement, up to $25,000, for exterior improvement projects throughout most of the CRA District. A higher incentive rate, previously available only to businesses in the CRA’s three target areas, was extended to retail merchants and second-floor office space in the downtown core, along Atlantic Avenue, from Swinton Avenue to the Intracoastal Waterway. Those businesses may now receive a 40% reimbursement up to a maximum of $50,000. “A good mix of retail, restaurant and office is essential to the continued viability of our downtown,” said Delray Beach Economic
Development Director Vin Nolan. “The CRA is regularly reviewing its incentive programs to respond to market conditions. Right now, assisting our retailers is a high priority to help sustain our walkable downtown.” The Site Development Assistance Program helps cover the cost of a variety of exterior improvement projects, including façade upgrades, roof repair, door and window replacement, landscaping and irrigation, and even building expansion. The program is available to both commercial property owners and tenants. Other updates to the program included revised application requirements and funding disbursement schedules. Program guidelines and application forms are available at the CRA office, located at 20 N. Swinton Avenue, and online at www.delraycra.org. Applicants are required to attend a pre-application workshop before applying. Call the CRA office at (561) 276-8640 for more information.
Paint-Up and Signage Program
The Paint-Up & Signage Program was established by the CRA to encourage existing building owners or operators to improve the exterior of their buildings through a new coat of paint and signage. The program allows the building owner to share the cost of these minor improvements with the Delray Beach CRA. Interior paint projects are not eligible. • To qualify for the program the building must be located in the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Area. • The CRA will reimburse the business owner or property owner for up to for 50% of the cost of an approved exterior pressure cleaning, paint and signage project, up to a maximum of $5,000. Any improvements made before approval of
the grant application by the CRA Board are automatically ineligible for reimbursement. • Applicants must submit a completed Paint-Up & Signage Program application form, labeled samples of paint color choices, at least two estimates from licensed and insured painters, at least two estimates for signage, and proof of color approval from the City of Delray Beach. • After the application is approved by the CRA Board, the applicant must provide the agency with copies of final invoices for paint and signage expenses, along with acceptable proof of payment, in order to receive reimbursement. To request more information, email Marketing & Grants Manager Elizabeth Burrows, or call the CRA at 561.276.8640.

Wood Partners to commence construction on $27 million Midtown Delray community With Palm Beach County’s Rental Occupancy Rate at Over 95 Percent, the 116-Unit Project Is the Latest in a Market Where New Rental Units Are Scarce Multifamily developer Wood Partners announced that it has closed on a $26.9 million deal to build Midtown Delray, a neighborhood of 116 three-story rental townhomes near downtown Delray Beach. Construction on the new community, which will be spread across 17 buildings totaling nearly 192,000 square feet of living space, is scheduled to begin on July 1. The development is expected to generate more than $400,000 in annual property tax revenue for Delray Beach once construction is complete and leasing begins, which is anticipated by September 2013. In addition, the construction phase is projected to create approximately 140 full-time temporary jobs while pumping more than $10 million into the local economy, based on a formula developed by the National Association of Home Builders to estimate local impact of new rental units. “Delray Beach remains an exceptional area for development,” said David Thompson, Director for Wood Partners in Florida. “Like our under-construction Alta Congress community, Midtown Delray is ideally positioned to place its residents right in the hub of a broad spectrum of cultural, dining, employment and recreational opportunities.” Midtown Delray is located at 4200 Old Germantown Road, along the south side of Linton Boulevard and just east of Military Trail, in the midst of several high-end single-family neighborhoods, including Fox Chase to the east and Hammock Reserve to the west. The site is less than four miles east of the Ronald Reagan Turnpike and just two miles west of I-95 and the Delray Beach TriRail station that connects Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach with 18 stations along a 70-mile system. “The Palm Beach County apartment market has seen positive absorption in the wake of the housing bust, as the shift from homeownership to rental continues,” Thompson said. “While absorption will taper off from the strong bump
seen immediately following the recession, it should remain at a healthy pace for years to come. The decline in vacancies has already spurred growth in effective rents, which have been rising and should continue to do so as the market continues to tighten.” Midtown Delray homes will average just under 1,700 square feet and each residence will have an attached garage on the first floor, 82 of which will accommodate two-cars. The units will feature high-quality amenities including ceramic flooring in kitchens, entries and baths, ceramic tub surrounds, and 9-foot, 4-inch ceilings throughout. The community will also feature a clubhouse, swimming pool and tot lot. The 7.27-acre site is near major local and regional employment centers, including West Palm Beach and Boca Raton. Current Builders of Pompano Beach is the general contractor for the project; AW Architects of Boca Raton are the architects; Michael B. Schorah and Associates of West Palm Beach are civil engineers; and Urban Design Kilday Studios, also from West Palm Beach, will handle the landscape design.

COME HOME TO A LITTLE HISTORY
Do you like history? A strong sense of community? Then you should consider living in the West Settlers District. The area has come a long way since its early days dating back to as far as 1894 when it became one of the first African-American settlements in Delray Beach. Originally referred to as “The Sands” due to the sandy soil in the area, it has become a focal point of local history and culture. West Settlers is easily defined using current landmarks as it runs between the Tennis Center and the Fire Station and goes back to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. One of Delray’s robust historical communities, it was deemed a historic district in 1997 in the local register of historic places. This area of historical single family homes is fronted by Atlantic Grove, a community that was built with the help of the CRA (Community Redevelopment Agency) in the early 2000’s. Atlantic Grove consists of two parts, one being two three-story mixed use buildings directly on Atlantic Avenue and the other made up of 55 townhomes located directly behind these structures, all with views of the tennis center. The mixed use buildings are comprised of 46,000 sq. ft. of commercial condominiums in addition to twenty residential condos. The townhomes range from approximately 1,500 to 1,800 sq. ft. and include amenities such as a private pool and cabana along with a gated entry. As they are located close to Atlantic Avenue and built of newer construction these units rarely become available. At presstime of this article, there is only one condo available for sale in the mixed use building at an asking price of around $250,000 for the 1-bed, 2-bath unit. There is also one 2-bed, 2.5-bath townhouse listed at $275,000. The association dues for both units are advertised in the $350$370/month range. At this time there are no single family
homes in West Settlers listed on the multiple listing service. Past values vary quite substantially due to the size of the homes and proximity to Atlantic and Swinton Avenues. In recent years homes in need of updating have sold in the $40,000 to $60,000 range. A great building for first time buyers is West Settlers Condo’s. Currently there are three 2-bed, 1-bath condos available on NW 5th Avenue at an affordable price of $60,000, thanks to assistance from the CRA. These units have been completely remodeled and even include washer and dryer. The monthly association in these units is $149/month according to the MLS. A very affordable way for a first time buyer to live walking distance to Delray Beach’s downtown area. Since we were originally talking history at the beginning of this article, how could I overlook the fact that the Spady Cultural Museum is located in the neighborhood at 170 NW Fifth Avenue. This former home of the prominent community leader Solomon D. Spady is now a museum that opened in July of 2001. The museum is a great place to get caught up on local Delray Beach history and to find out more about the West Settlers District. For more information you can contact the Spady Museum at 561-279-8883 or attend their annual Juneteenth event on the 21st of June at Crane’s Beachhouse (another of Delray’s hidden gems worth checking out). Come eat or come play - you’ll want to stay in beautiful Downtown Delray.
